2 MOUNT JEZREEL BAPTIST CHURCH KOINONIA BIBLE INSTITUTE Winter/Spring 2014 (February 25 May 17, 2014) PURPOSE: The purpose of the Koinonia Bible Institute is to glorify God through developing, coordinating, and implementing a structured Bible-centered curriculum where each student will concentrate on specific subjects for a period of 12 weeks (2 Tim. 2:15, 2 Peter 3:18, Ephes. 4:11, 12). OBJECTIVES: Classes will assist students in: The Place to Go For Those Who Want To Know and Grow Developing competency and knowledge of the doctrines of the Bible; Developing a mature relationship with God through prayer, study of scriptures and meditation; Developing spiritual enthusiasm and zeal for communicating the Word of God to others; and Developing a sense of purpose and to set out to put God s Word in action by helping one or more of the following: the poor, broken hearted, blind, bruised, and/or the captives. REGISTRATION AND COST INFORMATION: Registration will begin on Saturday, February 15, 2014 via the Internet. Paper packets will also be available on Saturday, February 15, 2014 in the Administrative Office for those who do not have Internet access. Completed registration forms can be transmitted at any time (up to midnight on Sunday, February 23, 2014) via the Internet or downloaded and given to Sister Carolyn Alston or on any given Sunday after 8:00 am or 11:00 am services in the Administrative Office. Forms may also be ed to Sister Carolyn Alston at calston@mtjezreel.com. You may also fax your registration during the week to Sis. Carolyn Alston or Sister Renee Wells at Early registration will ensure availability of your desired class. Classes with less than 5 students are subject to cancellation. Please select up to three classes (1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd choice) in case the first choice is unavailable. Registration for non-mjbc members is $25. The cost of books for a class is the student s responsibility. Students 17 years of age and younger must be registered by their parent(s) prior to attending class. Students cannot be registered without the last four digits of their social security number. All students, including children, are asked to come to class with their Bibles, pen/pencil, paper, and a willingness to learn. Classes are filled on a first-come-first-served basis. All classes provided through Mount Jezreel s Koinonia Bible Institute will be based on Christian principles and the Baptist doctrine. Students may therefore be required to join in prayer, remember and recite scriptures, and/or perform other assignments related to Christian Biblical Teachings. -2-

3 CLASS SCHEDULES AND OFFERINGS: Classes for this session will be held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. On Tuesday there will be a general prayer and praise service in the Sanctuary between 6:45 pm and 7:15 pm. Immediately after, students will report to their respective classes for the remainder of the evening session. A light dinner will be served, free of charge, from 6:00 pm - 6:40 pm for those attending Tuesday night classes. The Wednesday class will be taught from 12:00 noon 1:00 pm. Saturday classes will be taught from 9:00am to 10:30am. All classes will begin and end promptly. For parents that have children in Tuesday classes, please leave your classes promptly at 9:00 pm to pick up your children. Classes offered this session, with instructors, are as follows: Tuesday Classes February 25 th May 13 th, 2014 dfree: Introduction to the Basic Aspects of Managing Life & Handling Money (ST 925): Course Description: dfree is a strategy for people to learn how to manage their lives by managing their finances. dfree is not just another literacy program. This movement is based on a belief that living in debt is an emotional, psychological, and spiritual problem as much as it is an educational and informational one. dfree addresses the behavioral and attitudinal keys to debt-free living. The course will allow for one to gain a clear understanding of his or her current financial status and work towards achieving the basic aspects of managing life and handling money according to biblical principles. Soaries, Jr. Instructors: Brother Michael and Sister Barbara Glasby Doctrine of Salvation (FS 101): Course Description: What does it mean to be saved? How do I know I am saved? What am I saved from? Have you ever asked yourself these questions? If yes, then this course is for you. This is a basic course to help new members understand their role as an active disciple in the Body of Christ and also for more seasoned Christians who desire a refresher course in the foundation of Christianity. 4 Experiencing God through Prayer (FS 211): Course Description: Would you like to strengthen your personal prayer time with God? You can have an exciting relationship with God. One of intimate communion with Jesus Christ! Students will learn biblical guidelines for effective, vital communication with God. Discover some of the essential keys to developing a vibrant prayer life. Textbook: The Power of a Praying Church by Stormie Omartian Instructors: Rev. Pertina Scott Introduction to the Old Testament-Part 2 (BE 210): Course Description: Introduction to the Old Testament is an overview of the Old Testament. Textbook: The Holy Bible. (Study Materials will be available for purchase in class.) Instructors: Rev. Sherry Robinson and Rev. Fred Baylor Introduction to the New Testament, Part 2 (BE 102): Course Description: Through this survey course, participants will build a framework for understanding and interpreting the New Testament, gain an understanding of the biblical background needed for a lifetime of meaningful Bible study; and respond to God as He speaks to you through His Word. This course will cover Galatians Revelation. Textbook: The Holy Bible and Journey of a Lifetime by Tommy Higle Instructor: Rev. LaWanda Kamalidiin God s Vision or Television Course Description: This 12 week course will challenge you to analyze how much time you spend watching TV and how it influences what you believe. Today, television is viewed as a harmless source of entertainment and information. It has influenced our religious beliefs and shaped the way we live our lives. This class will take an in-depth look at life, the media's influence on it and encourages us to reshape our lives to reflect God's way of living. 5 Music Fundamentals and Theory 101 Combined Courses This course is designed to provide an introduction to music and theory. For those of you who have an interest in music, a desire to deepen your understanding of concepts, terminology, African American perspective and its relationship to the Christian Church and worship experience then this is the class for you. Music Fundamentals and Theory 101 is intended to provide the foundation for music study in a fun and interactive way. All participants will enjoy learning new techniques for learning musical notation through hands-on experience with use of computers and piano keyboards, an important component of learning the rudiments of music making and notation. Students will even be given the chance to apply what is learned while composing their own melodies and rhythms. All levels are welcomed. Textbook: Recommended but not required. Schmeling, Paul. The class is MANDATORY for all couples planning to be married at Mt. Jezreel Baptist Church. The fee for the class is $50 for members and $100 for non-members, which covers all course materials and assessment tools. 6 How to Study Your Bible: For Kids - Youth- Ages 6-10 Course Description: This course will help kids find out what the Bible is all about. This course will provide the students with basic skills for Bible study. Textbooks: Holy Bible and How to Study the Bible for Kids by Kaye Arthur and Janna Arndt Instructors: Sister Kim Matthews and Sister Teresa King Hit Your STRIDE (Spiritual Gifts, Talents, Resources, Individuality, Dreams, Experiences) Youth- Ages (TN 128) Course description: You may be wondering "Why am I here? Where is this going to lead?" The fact that you've made it to this point is evidence that the Holy Spirit is already at work in your life. In this course, you will discover certain truths: You are uniquely created by God. God has given you significant gifts. God has a plan and purpose for your life. As a Christian you are called to serve. Text: Serving from the Heart for Youth: Finding Your Gifts and Talents for Service. Instructor: Min. Charles McDuffie The Avengers: Spiritual Warfare/Fighting the Good FightAges (TN 227): In 1 Timothy 6:12, the Bible talks about fighting the good fight of faith, and in 1 John 3:8, we are told that one of the reasons for the Son of God appearing was to destroy the devil's work. These images of conflict are given to us for a good reason: to encourage us to continue to fight the daily Spiritual war that rages in us, our world and others. Instructors: Min. Khalida Burton Wednesdays, February 26, May 14, 2014 Introduction to the Bible/The Power of God s Name Course Description: This class will explore where the Bible comes from, who wrote the Bible, and how do we interpret the Bible. We will examine the different translations and their impact on our understanding of God's purposes for our lives. In addition we will study the names of God and "learn to trust the Lord's goodness, rely on His promises, and live in His abundance." 7 Introduction to the New Testament Saturdays, March 1, 2014-May 17, 2014 Course Description: Through this survey course, participants will build a framework for understanding and interpreting the New Testament, gain an understanding of the biblical background needed for a lifetime of meaningful Bible study; and respond to God as He speaks to you through His Word. This course will cover Galatians Revelation. Textbook: The Holy Bible and Journey of a Lifetime by Tommy Higle Instructor: Deacon Alfreda White Biblical Interpretation Course Description: The way a thing is put together indicates the way it can be taken apart - the way the Bible was written indicates the way it should be interpreted. This course introduces hermeneutical principles by which the Bible was written and equips the Christian workman to rightly divide and interpret the Word of truth. Pre-requisites for this course. Students who enroll in this course are required to have taken the following courses (through the Koinonia Bible Institute, seminary, divinity school, etc.): New Testament and Old Testament. This course is for seasoned Bible students, not for persons new to the study of the Bible. Perspective students must participate in regular, ongoing Bible study outside of study in which they participate as a course requirement. 8 CREDIT/AUDIT POLICY: Classes taught at the Bible Institute can be taken for credit (to be used toward graduation) or audit (not for credit or graduation). Students shall attend 80% of all classes to receive credit for the course taken. Special approval may be provided to miss more classes by the instructor(s) prior to absences. If not approved in advance, students who miss more classes will not receive credit. These students may switch from taking the class for credit to audit. Courses audited can be repeated to obtain credit. Students who do not wish to take classes for credit, may audit them by checking the box marked Audit. If this box is not checked, it will be assumed that the student is taking the class for credit. These students auditing classes are, however, still required to complete a registration form and pay the registration fee(s). Please Note: Students arriving to class late by 15 minutes or more are considered absent. COURSE NUMBERING SYSTEM/CREDIT DESIGNATION The Institute uses a two-letter prefix to identify the subject area and the three-digit number to identify courses according to the following system: BE Biblical Exposition HI History PE Physical Education BM Business Management MA Math ST Special Topics CH Children (6-10) MI Missions TH Theology CS Corel Application (Computer) MP Marriage Preparation TN Teen Classes EC Early Childhood (3-5) MS Microsoft UR Urban Ministries EM Educational Ministry MU Music FS Foundational Studies OR Orientation 100 Basic Classes 1 Credit 200 Intermediate Classes 2 Credits 300 Advanced Classes 3 Credits 900 Special Topics/Electives 1-2 Credits GRADUATION/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To be eligible for graduation from the Koinonia Bible Institute one must meet the following requirements: 3 basic courses (100 level courses) which are 1 credit each 2 intermediate courses (200 level courses) which are 2 credits each 1 advanced topic credit (300 level course) 3 credits each 2 special topic credits (100 level courses or special topic classes, i.e., orientation) Basic Credits 3 classes x 1 credit = 3 credits Intermediate Credits 2 classes x 2 credits = 4 credits Advanced Credits 1 class x 3 credits = 3 credits *Special Topics 2 classes x 1 credit = 2 credits Total 12 credits Special topic classes are those classes taught over the summer and/or holidays. Most of these classes are less than 12 weeks. The orientation class is a special topic class that is equivalent to one credit. Students may also take a two-credit class to fulfill their special topics credits. Please note: Discipleship, Survey of the Old Testament, and Survey of the New Testament are mandatory classes for graduation. -8-
