3 2016 CERTIFICATE OF PROGRESS COURSE DESCRIPTIONS PHASE I 1004 Effective Bible Reading: This course identifies methods and approaches to Bible study that can lead to spiritual growth and Christian maturity. Areas that will be covered include the structure of the Bible, resources for personal study, and other subjects that will add meaning to the reading of the Bible Survey of the Old Testament: This course will survey the Old Testament. Included in this survey will be a general overview of the divisions, time periods, places, events, people, and archaeology of the Old Testament Survey of the New Testament: This course will survey the New Testament. Included in this survey will be a general overview of the divisions, time periods, places, events, people, and archaeology of the New Testament sections of the Bible Christian Stewardship: This course will cover the basic tenets of Christian stewardship time, talent, and tithe. Students will learn how to effectively manage their resources through a better understanding of the spiritual principles, practices, and contributions of Christian stewardship Theology and History of Christianity: This course will outline the development of the Christian movement from the beginning of Jesus ministry on earth to present times. Students will focus on the history, theology, culture, and times that enable Christianity to develop and grow. Prominent persons who impacted the Christian movement will be identified Spiritual Formation: This course is designed to enable people to mature in their Christian walks. It will focus on a creative and dynamic approach to nurturing people from children to mature adults to become better disciples of Jesus Christ. Students will discuss what it means to be Christians. PHASE II 1075 The Synoptic Gospels: This course will focus on the Synoptic Gospels---Matthew, Mark, and Luke. Students will study the life and ministry of Jesus Christ as portrayed by these three writers. Through this comparative study, students will gain a more comprehensive understanding of Jesus ministry Baptist Doctrine: This course examines, with simplicity and clarity, the basic teachings of the Baptist faith. Students will explore each doctrinal position and the biblical basis for each doctrinal position taught in the Bible. PHASE III 1079 Survey of John: This course will focus on the fourth gospel and its uniqueness. Students will identify the specific features that characterize John s gospel and distinguish it from the Synoptic Gospels, with emphasis on John s writings and the ministry of Jesus Christ Survey of Romans: This course will focus on the thematic overview of major issues presented in Paul s doctrinal letter to the Roman Christians. Students will come to recognize each doctrinal truth presented in the book History of Baptists: This course will examine the roots of the Baptist faith. Students will study the historical development of the Baptist denomination.
4 9005 Writing Techniques II: This course will focus on the Certificate of Progress Program writing requirements for Phase 3. Emphasis will be placed on the writing of documented research and the development of other skills necessary to complete the writing assignments in this phase. Students will be introduced to the library and use of reference materials. PHASE IV 1112 Survey of Revelation: This course will focus on the book of Revelation with emphases on authorship, date, theme, and recipients. The prophetic themes, symbols, and interpretations of various revelations will be discussed Christianity and Contemporary Issues: This course challenges the students to identify and confront contemporary issues. The students will look at issues that affect the church, home, and community. They will be encouraged to think through practical solutions and approaches to immediate and emerging social and ecclesiological concerns The Computer in the Life of the Church: This course is designed to aid those responsible for Christian education in the development of a comprehensive funding plan for the church s Christian education program. Students will be instructed in methods of determining the expense of an aggressive Christian education ministry, as well as the means of providing support for this ministry. ELECTIVES (CERTIFIED COURSES) 1006 How to Accurately Interpret the Bible: This course is designed to lead the students to employ the resources and tools of hermeneutics. With these tools, students will engage in biblical analysis during the class period Paul s Prison Letters: This course will focus on Paul s prison letters (the book of Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon). Students will investigate the mind of the man while incarcerated as he addressed the early churches Introduction to Eschatology: This course will focus on the doctrine of last things. It will focus on beliefs concerning death, the end of the world, and the ultimate destiny of humankind. It focuses on many of the various Christian doctrines concerning the Second Coming, the resurrection of the dead, and the Last Judgment Foundation of Christian Ethics: This course is designed for understanding the philosophical and Christological approaches to Christian ethics. Students will engage in biblical principles for decision making and conduct for living Creative Ways of Teaching: This course is designed to instruct in the methods of teaching in the local church setting. It is designed to assist teachers in discovering new ways of teaching, such as learning behaviors, and strategies of student learning and behavior Basic Christian Beliefs: This course will focus on questions regarding historical and contemporary Christian faith. Students will explore the beliefs and interpretations of the faith and will be guided to develop a satisfying personal Christian belief system and life-purpose statement Doctrine of Salvation - Grace: This course examines salvation from the view of grace and regeneration. Grace looks at God s unmerited favor toward man, while regeneration looks at the process by which God transmits Himself into the soul of man and makes him new.
5 5012 Becoming an Effective Deacon: This course is designed to assist the deacon in becoming aware of his biblical base. The students will be presented with ideas that will enable them to more effectively perform their duties and work harmoniously with the pastor and other church leaders Introduction to Discipleship: This course is designed to introduce the believer to the biblical principles of discipleship. This course will examine discipleship methods of Jesus, and the difference between discipleship and membership The Ministry of Ushering: This course is designed to teach the ministry of ushering in the church. Students will also learn the basic signs, positions, and post locations commonly used in ushering within the church Maintaining a Good Marriage and a Strong Family: This course recognizes the differences in marriage partnerships. Recognizing that all marriages are unique, the course will look at biblical, psychological, and sociological concepts that will help a family to grow and remain strong. SEMINARS The Work of the Deaconess: This course is designed to focus on Deaconess in becoming aware of how she can effectively contribute to the work of the deacon. Students taking this course will be learning Biblebased ideas that will enable them to be more proficient in their work Organization and Administration of Church Music Ministries: This course will provide the local church leadership with the foundational and organizational structure for meaningful church music programs. The course will provide students with musical recourses that are appropriate and meaningful to the congregation. How to Become a Strong Christian Black Woman: This course is designed to assist the black Christian woman by exploring the lives of extraordinary biblical and contemporary women. The course will focus on the traits of spirituality, motherhood, servant-hood, and self-worth, with the aim of demonstrating the value of women based on a thorough examination of Proverbs 31. Pastor-Deacon Relationship: A healthy relationship between pastor and deacons contributes to a vital, healthy church body. This seminar offers insights and practical suggestions on the proper relationship for every pastor and deacon who longs to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ 8002 The Prayer Seminar: This seminar is designed to study the biblical basis for prayer, and the importance of prayer in the lives of Christians. Emphasis will be given to ways of organizing the local church prayer meeting ministry for effectiveness and growth Administering & Growing the Sunday School: This course will focus on the various administrative skills needed to direct the church school. Administrative functions that will be covered include planning, programming, curriculum, budgeting, recruitment, supervision, delegation, and evaluation Continuing Role of African-American Church in America: This course will examine the uniqueness of the black church in America. It will review the major social and spiritual landmarks that make up the identity and ministry of the traditional African-American church How to Develop a Giving Church: Instruction on systematic biblical approach to involve the congregants into developing a love and a genuine concern for supporting the work of the ministry of their local churches through giving.
6 9903 Ministerial Ethics and Etiquette: This ethics and etiquette of the ministers are important. This seminar will explore some of the temptations, pitfalls, and problems that could ensnare the minister, and how to handle them. It will look at the preacher s appearance and his conduct in the pulpit, his relationship to members, and his professional behavior in all settings Seminar for Young Pastors and Ministers: Young ministers will study such practical matters as church administration, staff relationships, community leadership, ministerial ethics, work with congregational management, and other professional issues not normally handled in a classroom setting. The students will review denominational structure and associational ministry. This seminar is designed to build confidence and skills that lead to more effective ministry.
