Students will investigate the methods and procedures used to produce the many translations and versions Effective Bible Reading Min. Marsha Newhouse This course identifies methods and approaches to Bible study that can lead to spiritual growth and Christian maturity. Areas that will be covered include the structure of the Bible, resources for personal study, and other subjects that will add meaning to the reading of the Bible Introduction to the Old Testament Rev. Henry Reddix This course will survey the Old Testament. Included in this survey will be a general overview of the divisions, time periods, places, events, people, and archaeology of the Old Testament Introduction to the New Testament Dr. Henry L. Goines This course will survey the New Testament. Included in this survey will be a general overview of the divisions, time periods, places, events, people, and archeology of the New Testament sections of the Bible The Synoptic Gospels Rev. Mary W. Moss This course will focus on the Synoptic Gospels Matthew, Mark, and Luke. Students will study the life and ministry of Jesus Christ as portrayed by these three writers. Through this comparative study, students will gain a more comprehensive understanding of Jesus ministry Survey of John Dr. Irma C. Miller This course will focus on the fourth gospel and its uniqueness. Students will identify the specific features that characterize John s gospel and distinguish it from the Synoptic Gospels, with emphasis on John s writings and the ministry of Jesus Christ. 1
2 1081 The Teachings of Jesus Ms. Linda Coleman This course will focus on the instructional ministry of Jesus as described in all four Gospels Survey of Romans Rev. Samuel Gibbs This course will focus on a thematic overview of major issues presented in Paul s doctrinal letter to the Roman Christians. Students will come to recognize each doctrinal truth presented in the book Survey of Revelation Rev. Kenneth E. Thompson This course will focus on the book of Revelation with emphases on authorship, date, theme, and recipients. The prophetic themes, symbols, and interpretations of various revelations will be discussed Christian Stewardship Rev. Melvin Rushing This course will cover the basic tenets of Christian stewardship time, talent, and tithe. Students will learn how to effectively manage their resources through a better understanding of the spiritual principles, practices, and contributions of Christian stewardship Debt Free Living How to Manage Money Through the Word Mrs. Shirley Clark This course will emphasize money management through the study of the Bible. Students will discover God s design for money and how it may best glorify Him as they manage it Baptist Doctrine Rev. David Thomas Jr. This course examines with simplicity and clarity the basic teachings of the Baptist faith. Students will explore each doctrinal position and the basis for each doctrinal position taught in the class Foundation of Christian Ethics Rev. Michael T. Sherman This course is designed for understanding the philosophical and Christological approaches to Christian ethics. Students will engage in biblical principles for decision making and conduct for living Creative Ways of Teaching Dr. Calvin W. Woods This course is designed to instruct in the methods of teaching in the local church setting. It is designed to assist teachers in discovering new ways of teaching, such as learning behaviors, and strategies of student learning and behavior Teaching Nursery Children Mrs. Gloria T. Williams This course will focus on the various teaching methods for the preschool learner. Students will explore the varying development levels of children, to include socialization, spiritual development, and physical and mental competencies The Use of the Bible with Children Mrs. Anna Horne This course will give practical study guidelines in using the Bible with children. Teachers will demonstrate learning strategies, such as storytelling, role-playing, and general Bible reading Helping Young People Develop Christian Beliefs Mrs. Doris D. Roberts This course will assist in developing methods for teaching young people basic Christian beliefs. Students will be taught to engage their young people in the practices of principles of Christianity Christian View Toward Sexual Responses Rev. George Cauthen This course will provide vital information on the importance, challenges, and responsibilities necessary to maintain a Christian perspective on the worldly view of sexual relationships inside and outside of marriage. 2
3 3007 History of Baptists Mrs. Georgia W. Hulbert This course will examine the roots of the Baptist faith. Students will study the historical development of the Baptist denomination Theology and History of Christianity Rev. Orin D. Grant Sr. This course will outline the development of the Christian movement from the beginning of Jesus ministry on earth to present times. Students will focus on the history, theology, culture, and times that enable Christianity to develop and grow. Prominent persons who impacted the Christian movement will be identified The Doctrine of God Mrs. Phyllis Wilson This study of God allows students to look at God, the First Person of the Trinity, as God the Creator and Father of mankind. It allows a further look at the Creator God who sustains us through His omniscience and omnipresence. It further allows students to look at God as the Incarnate Word and Redeemer of mankind through Jesus Christ. As the result of the study, the students should become more deeply rooted in the true and living God The Doctrine of Salvation Mr. Kenneth Chandler This course examines salvation from the view of grace and regeneration. Grace looks at God s unmerited favor toward man, while regeneration looks at the process by which God transmits Himself into the soul of man and make him new The Doctrine of the Holy Spirit Mrs. Nora Callaway Students will study the person and work of the Holy Spirit. This study will include a thorough look at the corresponding doctrines that impact our understanding of the work of the Holy Spirit. The students will be able to clearly identify this doctrine of the church with a holistic understanding of salvation, with special emphases on justification, redemption, and sanctification The Doctrine of Prayer Ms. Sonya L. Elmore This course is designed to teach the fundamental purposes, principles, and power of prayer. It looks into prayer as the channel of communication of the believer to the Father Work of the Church Secretary/Clerk Mrs. Gloria Chapman This course will serve as a general overview of the work of the church secretary/clerk. Basic functions of the secretary will be covered to familiarize the participants with the importance of this position as it relates to the interaction generated between the members and official church staff Organizing the Church for Christian Ed. Mrs. Cloteal Carradine-Miller This course will focus on the various administrative and organizational skills needed to organize the Christian education department. Students will focus on structure, leadership, and staffing needs for Christian education Spiritual Formation Rev. Ronald Perkins This course is designed to enable people to mature in their Christian walks. It will focus on a creative and dynamic approach to nurturing people from children to mature adults to become better disciples of Jesus Christ. Students will discuss what it means to be Christians. 3
4 6022 Teaching Strategies for Spiritual Formation of Children and Youth Dr. Gwendolyn White This course is designed to provide interactive teaching strategies and techniques for the spiritual formation of children and youth. It will focus on age-appropriate learning activities and hands-on experiences for exploring what is means to be Christian Developing Christian Black Men to Be Role Models Rev. Shawn Taylor This course is designed to teach biblical methods and models that will strengthen the black male. Some of the biblical models used will be Joseph, Nehemiah, Barnabas, and Paul Discovering Your Spiritual Gifts Rev. Alejandro Smith This course is designed to help the students understand who God has uniquely made them to be. In addition, in this course, students will work through a spiritual gift assessment that will help them to discover their spiritual gift(s). Discovering their spiritual gift(s) will prepare them to move into a meaningful area of service where they best fit into the body of Christ The Work of the Youth Director Mrs. Naomi R. Green This course is designed to acquaint the youth director with the work of the Youth Department of the National Baptist Convention. The organizational structure, goals, and objectives of youth work will be the focus of the course. Students will be introduced to resources that are appropriate and available for Youth Ministry leadership The Ministry of Church Ushering Ms. Hazel West This course is designed to teach the ministry of ushering in the church. Students will also learn the basic signs, positions, and post locations commonly used in ushering within the church The African American Church and Social Justice Rev. Theron Jackson This course investigates the lives, theology, and methods of the great servants of God who dedicated their lives in the struggle for liberation of people. The history of the United States cannot be accurately written without including the role of the African-American church in the struggle for the liberation of people. Not enough is known about the lives of men and women who risked their lives for this cause Ministering to the Families of the Deceased Rev. Clarence Bryant This course is designed to assist persons involved in grief-counseling ministries. Students will be involved in practical exercises designed to strengthen grief-counseling skills. The course will cover crisisministry techniques to meet needs that become apparent both before and after the death event Christianity and Contemporary Issues Rev. Lovely Callaway This course challenges the students to identify and confront contemporary issues. The students will look at issues that affect the church, home, and community. They will be encouraged to think through practical solutions and approaches to immediate and emerging social and ecclesiological concern Writing Techniques I Mrs. Gwendolyn Ray Smith This course will focus on the Certificate of Progress Program writing requirements for Phase 2. Emphasis in this phase will be placed on the development of the skills necessary to complete the writing assignments. Skills that will be mastered range from the development of paragraphs/topic sentences to thesis-driven essays Public Speaking Ms. Patricia Whitehurst This course will identify the process and principles for writing speeches and delivering them in public. In addition to writing and speaking skills, the students will learn basic verbal and nonverbal communications skills that will enable them to effectively communicate with audiences of all sizes. 4
5 9020 Dynamics of Gospel Music Mr. Daryl Gates This course will strive to familiarize the students with the historical meaning of the words contained in the Negro gospel music, the influence of its heritage, the importance of its history and its social and spiritual impact for the present, and its importance for the future Computer in the Life of the Church Rev. William Smith This course is designed for pastors, office workers, Christian educators, and others who want to utilize computer technology in the church. Issues in administration, setting up computer labs, tutorials on Bible study, as well as membership record keeping and nurture will be covered in this course Church and Clergy Conflict Mrs. Sandra Burrell-Crump This course is designed to identify and study church and clergy conflicts. Using the unique examples of conflict in their own ministry, the students will discuss conflict-managements skills and ways to bring harmony in troubled situations SP0030 Christian Worship Ms. Valerie Banks This course teaches what God desires as true worship from His children. The following topics will be explored: What is worship?, The Object of Worship, Expressions of Our Worship, Worship as a Lifestyle, and Developing Christian Worship. Seminar By-Laws vs. The Bible Rev. (Dr.) Melvin Zeno This seminar includes a comprehensive discussion of church charters and By-laws as they relate to the Holy Scriptures. Actual examination of charters, bylaws, state and federal laws with explanations of what certain provisions mean will take place. It will include a discussion of what should be included and should not be included in church Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws. The course will provide a critical review and analysis of the benefits and burdens of man s rules which attempt to govern God s church. The seminar seeks to help Pastors, Deacons, Trustees, and lay persons avoid church splits and breakdowns by creating an understanding of how man s rules and the Holy Scriptures must interact in the governance of God s church, church polity and why the Bible must always prevail. Seminar Grant-Writing Rev. Mary S. Bashay Students will become familiar with the purpose and the process of securing grants for ministry programs and faith-based initiatives. They will work individually and cooperatively to share opportunities that currently exist in the church where grant funding could be used. Finally, they will examine resources designed to educate and empower their congregation to pursue grant opportunities. 5
