The Order for the Worship of God The Lord s Day March 10, :15 a.m. Welcome to St. Petersburg Presbyterian Church If you are with us for the first time, we are glad you are here! Please complete the guest card found in one of the chair pockets, and place it in the offering basket at the conclusion of the service. More information about our church can be found on our website at Reflection What makes the gospel such great news is God, who brings me to Himself and then gives Himself so freely to me through Jesus Christ. Everything that God gives me in the gospel forgiveness of sins, justification, adoption, fellowship with other believers, heaven serves merely to bring me to Himself so that I might know Him and Jesus Christ, whom He has sent. It is in Him, not His gifts, that my soul finds its truest joy and rest. Milton Vincent, A Gospel Primer for Christians WE ENTER GOD S PRESENCE WITH THANKSGIVING AND PRAISE The Welcome and Announcements Pastor David Harding The Passing of the Peace We welcome one another with the blessing of Christ s peace. The Call to Worship God from Psalm 145 Steve Curtiss Leader: We will exalt our God the King; we will praise his name for ever and ever. All: The Lord is gracious and compassionate; slow to anger and rich in love. The Lord is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made. Leader: His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and his dominion endures through all generations. The Lord upholds all those who fall and lifts up all who are bowed down. All: Our mouths will speak in praise of the Lord. Let every creature praise his holy name for ever and ever. 1

O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing Words: Charles Wesley, 1739 O for a thousand tongues to sing My great Redeemer s praise, The glories of my God and King, The triumphs of His grace! My gracious Master and my God, Assist me to proclaim, To spread through all the earth abroad The honors of Thy name. He breaks the power of cancelled sin, He sets the prisoner free; His blood can make the foulest clean, His blood availed for me. He speaks, and, listening to His voice, New life the dead receive, The mournful, broken hearts rejoice, The humble poor believe. Hear Him, ye deaf; His praise, ye dumb, Your loosened tongues employ; Ye blind, behold your Savior come, And leap, ye lame, for joy. The Prayer of Adoration and Invocation 2

WE CONFESS TOGETHER WHAT WE BELIEVE The Apostles Creed Leader: Christians, what do you believe about God? We believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. We believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; He descended into hell.* The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there He will come to judge the living and the dead. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic** church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. * he descended into hell refers to the righteous wrath of God which Jesus endured in our place when he suffered and died on the cross. ** catholic refers to the world-wide Church of Jesus Christ. The Gospel Doxology Words/Music by Zac Hicks & Julie Anne Vargas Your perfect Law exposes me I feel my sin and desperate need My best good works are powerless To satisfy Your righteousness But there is One who lived for me His life, my only victory His death forever sealed in time That I am His and He is mine Praise God from Whom all blessings flow Praise Him, all creatures here below Praise Him above, ye heavenly hosts Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. 3

WE REPENT OF OUR SINS AND RECEIVE GOD S MERCY The Call to Confession from Proverbs 28 and Acts 3 He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy. Therefore, repent, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord. The Prayer of Confession based on Psalm 51 Leader: Have mercy on us, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out our transgressions; wash away all our iniquities and cleanse us from our sins. All: For we know our transgressions, and our sin is always before us. Against you, you only, have we sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge. Leader: Surely you desire truth in the inner parts; you teach us wisdom in the inmost place. Create in us a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within us. All: Do not cast us from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from us. Restore to us the joy of your salvation and grant us a willing spirit, to sustain us. You do not delight in sacrifice, or we would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. Rather, the sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. Silent Prayers of Confession Words of Assurance and Hope in the Gospel from Micah 7 and 1 John 4 Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy. You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 4

O Great God Words and Music by Bob Kauflin O great God of highest heav n, occupy my lowly heart. Own it all and reign supreme, conquer every rebel pow r. Let no vice or sin remain that resists Your holy war. You have loved and purchased me, make me Yours forevermore. I was blinded by my sin, had no ears to hear Your voice, Did not know Your love within, had no taste for heaven s joys. Then Your Spirit gave me life, opened up Your Word to me Through the gospel of Your Son, gave me endless hope and peace Help me now to live a life that s dependent on Your grace. Keep my heart and guard my soul from the evils that I face. You are worthy to be praised with my every thought and deed. O great God of highest heav n glorify Your Name through me. You are worthy to be praised with my every thought and deed. O great God of highest heav n glorify Your Name through me. Parents with children up to age 4 are welcome to take them to the nursery for the remainder of the service. 5

WE HEAR GOD SPEAK IN HIS WORD The Sermon The Mercy of Seeing Mark 10:46-52 (pg. 847 in the pew Bible) Dr. David Harding 46And they came to Jericho. And as he was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a great crowd, Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the roadside. 47 And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me! 48 And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he cried out all the more, Son of David, have mercy on me! 49 And Jesus stopped and said, Call him. And they called the blind man, saying to him, Take heart. Get up; he is calling you. 50 And throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. 51 And Jesus said to him, What do you want me to do for you? And the blind man said to him, Rabbi, let me recover my sight. 52 And Jesus said to him, Go your way; your faith has made you well. And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him on the way. The Big Idea: In this passage about blind Bartimaeus, Mark wants us to see with eyes of faith who Jesus is that he is the promised Messiah who has come to open the eyes of the blind and set the captives free. This is what happened to Bartimaeus. He is an example of what Christian discipleship is. He sees his own condition rightly (as totally dependent and in need of help); he sees Jesus rightly (as the Son of David who can and will help); he responds to Jesus rightly (leaving all that he has and joyfully following Jesus on the road to the cross). Sermon Notes I. Bartimaeus Recognition (46-48) A. his true condition B. who Jesus is 6

II. Jesus responds in mercy (49-52) A. he stops (49) B. he calls (49) C. he questions (51) D. he heals (52) III. Bartimaeus response (50-52) IV. Our response Questions for personal/family reflection and Community Group discussion: 1. What things from Sunday s sermon stood out to you that you can share with an unbelieving friend? What things would you share with a believing friend? 2. What did Bartimaeus believe about Jesus? What did the crowd think of Bartimaeus? When have you had a moment like the crowd when you looked upon someone without compassion as if they did not merit attention? 3. In verse 49, what does Jesus do that is so significant? Share examples of times when you cried out for mercy and Jesus stopped and showed up in mercy. 4. What mercy do you need in your life right now? What is keeping you from crying out? 5. Why does Jesus ask the blind man what he could do for him? Wasn t it already obvious since the man was blind, or is there more going on there than is obvious at first glance? 6. What does Bartimaeus do after his eyes are opened? Why is his response significant in Mark s overall message? 7. How does this story show that Jesus is the promised Messiah? (see 2 Samuel 7; Isaiah 35; 42) Ask God to give you the faith to see Jesus Christ as an overflowing fountain of mercy and to cry out to him! 7

The Prayers of God s People WE FEAST ON JESUS CHRIST BY FAITH IN THE LORD S SUPPER The elders of St. Petersburg Presbyterian Church welcome to the Lord s Table all those who are believers in Jesus Christ, and are baptized members in good standing of a Christian church where the gospel is loved and proclaimed. We come to the Lord s Table as those who humbly and thankfully recognize that our standing before the Father is completely dependent upon the righteousness of Jesus Christ, the Reality behind this meal, and not our own merits. The Words of Institution The Giving and Receiving of the Bread and the Cup Please wait until all have been served, so we may eat and drink together. The cup trays contain wine on the inner rings and grape juice on the outer ring. Silent Prayers for Communing with Jesus Christ Prayer of Thanks Heavenly Father, thank you for all that you are, and all that you have done for me, and all you promise to do and be for me in Jesus. Thank you for giving me such a great salvation in him; for the forgiveness of my sins, for crediting me with his righteousness, for adopting me as your dearly loved child. May I never lose sight of the grace you have so freely given me, and may every area of my life reflect that grace to others. In Jesus name, Amen. Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need and turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the True and Living Bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the pioneer and finisher of my faith. Amen. Prayer of Commitment to God s People Lord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in baptism and in a life of committed discipleship in the local church. Grant that I may take the steps necessary to be one with your people and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen. Prayer for Covenant Children (Not yet received into communing membership) Lord Jesus, thank you for placing me inside your covenant family, the church. Help me more and more to know you, to love you, and to follow you as your faithful disciple. Amen. 8

WE RESPOND TO GOD S GRACE WITH SACRIFICIAL GENEROSITY Worshiping God through Our Financial Giving Because God has lavished us with the riches of his grace in Jesus, we give our money joyfully, generously, and sacrificially for the spread of the gospel in our city and around the world. Come Ye Sinners Words: Joseph Hart; Music: Matthew Smith Come, ye sinners, poor and wretched, weak and wounded, sick and sore; Jesus, ready, stands to save you, full of pity, joined with power. He is able, He is able; He is willing; doubt no more. Come, ye weary, heavy laden, bruised and broken by the fall; If you tarry 'til you're better, you will never come at all. Not the righteous, not the righteous; sinners Jesus came to call. Let not conscience make you linger, nor of fitness fondly dream; All the fitness He requireth is to feel your need of Him. This He gives you, this He gives you, 'tis the Spirit's rising beam. Lo! The Incarnate God, ascended; pleads the merit of His blood. Venture on Him; venture wholly, let no other trust intrude. None but Jesus, none but Jesus can do helpless sinners good. WE ARE SENT INTO THE WORLD TO MAKE DISCIPLES The Benediction Numbers 6:24-26 The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace. The Dismissal Having seen and savored the mercy of God in Jesus Christ, let us go from here to love and serve others in the power of that mercy. All: Thanks be to God! Please remain for the missions luncheon in the fellowship hall. All music used by permission through Christian Copyright Licensing International, #
