The Order for the Worship of God The Lord s Day January 20, :15 a.m. Sanctity of Human Life Sunday January 22 marks the 46th anniversary of the United States Supreme Court decision in the case of Roe vs. Wade, which gave legal protection in all 50 states to the willful taking of innocent human life in the womb of a mother. Since 1973, more than 60 million children have been aborted in the United States. Established in 1984 by Presidential Proclamation, Sanctity of Human Life Sunday is an opportunity to renew and proclaim our commitment to the preciousness of all human life, and is a much-needed reminder to pray and work for the end of abortion in our country and around the world. Reflection You formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there were none of them. Psalm 139:13-16 WE ENTER GOD S PRESENCE WITH THANKSGIVING AND PRAISE The Welcome and Announcements Pastor David Harding The Passing of the Peace Since God has made peace with us through the finished work of his Son, Jesus Christ, we welcome one another with his peace. The Call to Worship God from Revelation 5 and 7 Steve Curtiss, elder Leader: After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb! All: Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing! To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever! 1

Crown Him with Many Crowns Matthew Bridges, 1852 Crown Him with many crowns, the Lamb upon His throne; Hark! How the heavenly anthem drowns all music but its own. Awake, my soul, and sing of Him who died for thee, And hail Him as thy matchless King through all eternity. Crown Him the Lord of love, behold His hands and side, Rich wounds, yet visible above, in beauty glorified. No angel in the sky can fully bear that sight, But downward bends his burning eye at mysteries so bright. Crown Him the Lord of peace, whose power a scepter sways From pole to pole, that wars may cease, absorbed in prayer and praise. His reign shall know no end, and round His piercèd feet Fair flowers of paradise extend their fragrance ever sweet. Crown Him the Lord of years, the Potentate of time, Creator of the rolling spheres, ineffably sublime. All hail, Redeemer, hail! For Thou has died for me; Thy praise and glory shall not fail throughout eternity. The Prayer of Adoration and the Lord s Prayer Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil; For yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. 2

Ministry Testimony Mr. Scott Mahurin, Florida Preborn Rescue WE REPENT OF OUR SINS AND RECEIVE GOD S MERCY The Call to Confession Romans 3:20 For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin. The Public Confession of Sin Great and merciful Father, we are your children by your amazing grace in Jesus Christ. Yet, we are also sinners in continual need of your forgiveness. We come to you in humble repentance, believing your great and precious promise to be merciful to those who take refuge in the cross of Jesus. We confess our national and personal sins: We have worshiped your creation rather than the Creator. We have treasured your gifts and trashed the Giver. We have despised your holy Word and made ourselves the standard of truth. We have failed to speak and act justly on behalf of the most defenseless among us. We have failed to humble ourselves before you and believe your promises in the gospel. Your mercy in Jesus Christ is our only hope. Cleanse our filth with his precious blood. Clothe our nakedness with His spotless righteousness. Renew our hearts by the power of your Holy Spirit, so that we may live in faithful, joyful obedience to you. We offer our prayer in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen. Silent Prayers of Confession The Hope and Encouragement of the Gospel Titus 3:3-7 For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another. But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. 3

Lamb of God Twila Paris Your only Son, no sin to hide, but You have sent Him from Your side To walk upon this guilty sod, and to become the Lamb of God. Your gift of love they crucified, they laughed and scorned Him as He died; The humble King they named a fraud, and sacrificed the Lamb of God. (Chorus) O Lamb of God, sweet Lamb of God; I love the holy Lamb of God. O wash me in His precious blood. My Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God. I was so lost I should have died, but You have brought me to Your side To be led by Your staff and rod, and to be called a lamb of God. (Chorus) Parents with children up to age 4 are welcome to take them to the nursery for the remainder of the service. 4

WE HEAR GOD SPEAK IN HIS WORD The Sermon The Root and Remedy of Sin Genesis 3:1-21 (pg. 2-3 in the pew Bible) Dr. David Harding Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, Did God actually say, You shall not eat of any tree in the garden? 2 And the woman said to the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3 but God said, You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die. 4 But the serpent said to the woman, You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil. 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths. 8And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool [ of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the LORD God called to the man and said to him, Where are you? 10 And he said, I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself. 11 He said, Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat? 12 The man said, The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate. 13 Then the LORD God said to the woman, What is this that you have done? The woman said, The serpent deceived me, and I ate. 14The LORD God said to the serpent, Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. 15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel. 16 To the woman he said, I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you. 17 And to Adam he said, Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, You shall not eat of it, cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; 18 thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. 19 By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return. 20The man called his wife's name Eve, because she was the mother of all living. 21 And the LORD God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them. 5

Sermon Notes The Big Idea: God created us to find everything we need and desire in a relationship of dependence upon Him. In the Garden of Eden, when Adam and Eve rebelled against God, they cut that cord of dependence on Him as the ultimate source of life and standard of truth. In doing so, they enthroned their own desires and will as the ultimate determining factors for what is true and false, good and evil. This self-enthronement is the root of all sin and evil in the world and our lives. But the story doesn t end there. The good news of the Christian gospel is that God intervened into our rebellion with both judgment and mercy, promising forgiveness as well as the final defeat of sin and evil through the work of a Redeemer, the Seed of the woman, Jesus Christ. He alone is the Great Remedy for the root and fruits of all sin for all who will repent and trust in Him. 1. The root of all sin and evil in this world and our lives, including abortion 2. The remedy for all sin and evil in this world and our lives, including abortion 6

Questions for personal reflection and family/community group discussion: 1. What was at least one way God ministered to you in the worship service? Can you share a point from the sermon you are seeking to apply to your life this week? 2. According to Genesis 1:27; 9:6, Exodus 20:13 and Psalm 139:13-16, why is the unlawful taking of innocent human life such a great evil? 3. How does the truth of human value and dignity impact your thinking about abortion, and about how you treat all persons? 4. According to Genesis 3, what is the root of all sin and evil in this world, and our lives personally? How does Genesis 3 relate to the issue of abortion? 5. How is the gospel the good news of God s redeeming grace in Jesus Christ revealed in Genesis 3:15? How is this the remedy for abortion and all sin and evil in this world, and in our lives? 6. What can we do to promote a culture of life in our church and community? Pray for each other, that God would give us obedient faith in response to His Word. 8 The Prayers of God s People WE COMMUNE WITH JESUS CHRIST AT HIS TABLE The Lord s Supper is the family meal of Christians. Therefore, all are invited to partake of this meal who are repenting of their sins and trusting in Jesus alone for salvation, and are baptized members in good standing of a congregation that proclaims the gospel. You are encouraged to make use of the printed prayers below as guides to help you express the desires of your heart to God. If you have questions about your participation in the Lord s Supper, please speak with the pastor after the worship service. The Words of Institution The Giving and Receiving of the Bread and Cup Please wait until all have been served, so we may eat and drink together The outer ring of the cup tray contains grape juice and the inner rings contain wine. Prayer of Thanks Heavenly Father, thank you for all that you are, and all that you have done for me, and all you promise to do and be for me in Jesus. Thank you for giving me such a great salvation in him. Thank you for forgiving all my sins, crediting me with his righteousness, and adopting me as your dearly loved child. May I never lose sight of the grace you have so freely given me, and may every area of my life reflect that grace to others. In Jesus powerful name, Amen. Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus Christ, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever dared admit, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt on the cross, taking what I deserved in order to offer me complete forgiveness. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as my Savior and Lord. Amen. Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need, and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the pioneer and perfecter of my faith. Amen. 8

WE RESPOND TO GOD S GRACE WITH SACRIFICIAL GENEROSITY Worshiping God through Our Financial Giving Because God has lavished us with the riches of his grace in Jesus, we give our money joyfully and sacrificially for the spread of the gospel in our city and around the world. A Mighty Fortress Is Our God Martin Luther, 1529 A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing; Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing: For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe; His craft and power are great, and, armed with cruel hate, On earth is not his equal. Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing; Were not the right Man on our side, the Man of God s own choosing: Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He; Lord Sabaoth, His Name, from age to age the same, And He must win the battle. And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us: The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him; His rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure, One little word shall fell him. That word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them, abideth; The Spirit and the gifts are ours through Him Who with us sideth: Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also; The body they may kill: God s truth abideth still, His kingdom is forever. WE ARE SENT INTO THE WORLD TO MAKE DISCIPLES The Benediction Ephesians 3:20-21 Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen. The Dismissal Let us go from here to love and serve others in the power of the gospel of Jesus Christ. All: Thanks be to God! Please remain for refreshments and conversation in the fellowship hall. All music used by permission through Christian Copyright Licensing International, #
