The Order for the Worship of God The Lord s Day November 4, :15 a.m. Welcome to St. Petersburg Presbyterian Church If you are with us for the first time, we are glad you are here! Please complete the guest card found in the pew rack, and place it in the offering basket at the conclusion of the service. Join us for refreshments and conversation afterwards in the fellowship hall. If you have questions about Christianity or the ministries of this church, please speak with one of our members or the pastor after the service. It would be a privilege to talk with you. Reflection The cross is laid on every Christian. The first Christ-suffering which every man must experience is the call to abandon the attachments of this world. It is that dying of the old man which is the result of his encounter with Christ. As we embark upon discipleship we surrender ourselves to Christ in union with his death we give over our lives to death. Thus it begins; the cross is not the terrible end to an otherwise god-fearing and happy life, but it meets us at the beginning of our communion with Christ. When Christ calls a man, he bids him come and die. It is the same death every time death in Jesus Christ, the death of the old man at his call. Jesus summons to the rich young man was calling him to die, because only the man who is dead to his own will can follow Christ. In fact, every command of Jesus is a call to die, with all our affections and lusts. But we do not want to die, and therefore Jesus Christ and his call are necessarily our death as well as our life. Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Cost of Discipleship WE ENTER GOD S PRESENCE WITH THANKSGIVING AND PRAISE The Welcome and Announcements Pastor David Harding The Peace (Greeting one another with the peace of Jesus Christ) The Call to Worship God from Psalm 89 and 1 Samuel 2 Steve Curtiss, ruling elder Leader: I will sing of the Lord s great love forever; with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known through all generations. All: I will declare that your love stands firm forever, that you have established your faithfulness in heaven itself. Leader: The heavens are yours, and yours also the earth; you founded the world and all that is in it. Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; love and faithfulness go before you. All: There is no one holy like the Lord; there is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God. 1
Ten Thousand Reasons Music by Matt Redman and Jonas Myrin Bless the Lord, O my soul, O my soul Worship His holy name. Sing like never before, O my soul I'll worship Your holy name. The sun comes up, it s a new day dawning It s time to sing Your song again. Whatever may pass, and whatever lies before me Let me be singing when the evening comes. Chorus You re rich in love, and You re slow to anger. Your name is great and Your heart is kind. For all Your goodness, I will keep on singing Ten thousand reasons for my heart to find. Chorus And on that day when my strength is failing The end draws near, and my time has come Still, my soul will sing Your praise unending Ten thousand years, and then forevermore! Chorus I ll worship Your holy name Lord, I ll worship Your holy name Sing like never before, O my soul I ll worship Your holy name. The Prayer of Adoration and Invocation 2
WE CONFESS TOGETHER WHAT WE BELIEVE The Heidelberg Catechism Question 1 Leader: Christian, what is your only comfort in life and in death? All: That I am not my own, but belong body and soul, in life and in death to my faithful Savior Jesus Christ. He has fully paid for all my sins with his precious blood, and has set me free from the tyranny of the devil. He also watches over me in such a way that not a hair can fall from my head without the will of my Father in heaven: in fact, all things must work together for my salvation. Because I belong to him, Christ, by his Holy Spirit, assures me of eternal life and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for him. Wonderful, Merciful Savior Dawn Rodgers and Eric Wyse, 1989 Wonderful, Merciful Savior, precious Redeemer and Friend; Who would have thought that a Lamb could rescue the souls of men? Oh, you rescue the souls of men. Chorus You are the One that we praise, you are the One we adore. You are the healing and grace our hearts always hunger for, Oh, our hearts always hunger for. Counselor, Comforter, Keeper, Spirit we long to embrace; You offer hope when our hearts have hopelessly lost the way, Oh, we hopelessly lost the way. Chorus Almighty, infinite Father, faithfully loving your own; Here in our weakness you find us falling before your throne, Oh, we re falling before your throne. Chorus 3
WE REPENT OF OUR SINS AND RECEIVE GOD S MERCY The Call to Confession Matthew 5: 17, 20 Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. The Public Confession of Sin Most holy and merciful Father, we confess to you and to one another, that we have sinned by our own fault in thought, word, and deed; by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We confess to you, Lord, all our past unfaithfulness, pride, hypocrisy and impatience. We confess our intemperate love of worldly goods and comforts, our dishonesty in daily life and work, our negligence in prayer and worship, and our failure to commend the gospel to others. Forgive us, Father, for the sake of your Son, Jesus. Accomplish in us the work of your salvation, that we may show forth your glory in the world. Amen. Silent Prayers of Confession The Hope and Encouragement of the Gospel from Colossians 1:13-14 God has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Leader: May the peace and joy of God s forgiveness in Jesus Christ be with you all. All: And also with you 4
I Will Glory in My Redeemer Steve and Vikki Cook, 2001 I will glory in my Redeemer whose priceless blood has ransomed me. Mine was the sin that drove the bitter nails and hung Him on that judgment tree. I will glory in my Redeemer who crushed the power of sin and death. My only Savior before the Holy Judge. The Lamb Who is my righteousness, The Lamb Who is my righteousness. I will glory in my Redeemer my life He bought, my love He owns. I have no longings for another, I m satisfied in Him alone. I will glory in my Redeemer, His faithfulness my standing place. Though foes are mighty and rush upon me. My feet are firm, held by His grace, My feet are firm, held by His grace I will glory in my Redeemer, who carries me on eagles wings. He crowns my life with lovingkindness, His triumph song I'll ever sing. I will glory in my Redeemer, who waits for me at gates of gold. And when He calls me, it will be paradise. His face forever to behold, His face forever to behold. Parents are welcome to take their children, infants up to age 4, to the nursery for the remainder of the service. 5
WE HEAR GOD SPEAK IN HIS WORD The Sermon The Identity of Jesus and the Call of His Cross Mark 8:27-38 (pg. 844 in the pew Bible) Dr. David Harding 27And Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the way he asked his disciples, Who do people say that I am? 28 And they told him, John the Baptist; and others say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets. 29 And he asked them, But who do you say that I am? Peter answered him, You are the Christ. 30 And he strictly charged them to tell no one about him. 31And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32 And he said this plainly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33 But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, Get behind me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man. 34And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 35 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. 36 For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? 37 For what can a man give in return for his soul? 38 For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. The Big Idea: This passage is the hinge on which Mark s Gospel turns. It is the place where Jesus makes his identity and mission unmistakably clear. He is the long-awaited Messiah who has come to establish his kingdom. But, his kingdom doesn t come by taking his seat on a political or military throne. He brings his kingdom by being nailed to an execution rack the cross and then rising from the dead. Those who acknowledge him and trust him as their King must die to themselves, bear their own crosses and follow him gladly in a life of obedient faith. The Identity of Jesus (27-30) Sermon Notes 6
The Mission of Jesus (v31-33) What It Means to Follow Jesus (34-38) Questions for personal reflection and family/community Group discussion: 1. How did God speak to you and minister to you through the various elements of the worship service, i.e. the songs, prayers, sermon, Lord s Supper? 2. Peter gave a radically different answer to Jesus question about his identity than what the crowds were saying. What was Peter saying he believed when he declared Jesus was the Christ? 3. Jesus accepted Peter s identification of him as the Messiah. Why is it inadequate to consider Jesus only as a great moral teacher or merely an example to follow? 4. What kind of king did the Jews of Jesus day expect the Messiah would be? How do we sometimes expect Jesus to do the same for us? 5. How would you answer a child who asked, Why does Jesus say he must suffer, die, and rise again? How would you explain that to a Muslim? 6. What do you suppose Peter was thinking when he rebuked Jesus in v32? What are the things of man? 7. What does it mean to deny yourself? If time, read 1 Corinthians 9:19-27 and discuss the idea of giving up what we consider to be our rights. What should we be willing to sacrifice for Jesus and his gospel? What does it mean to take up your cross daily? Do we choose a cross to take up, or are we given a cross(es) to bear? 8. How would you argue that the death of the missionary Jim Elliot was not a great tragedy? What makes any deprivation, any humiliation, or any trial for the sake of Christ worthwhile? (vv ) See also Phil. 3:8. 9. Reflect on Dietrich Bonhoeffer s quote: Every command of Jesus a call to die. What strikes you about this? Does it sound odd? Why or why not? How do we faithfully live out Christ s call to discipleship? 7
WE FEAST ON JESUS CHRIST BY FAITH IN THE LORD S SUPPER The elders of St. Petersburg Presbyterian Church welcome to the Lord s Table all those who are believers in Christ, and are baptized members in good standing of a Christian church where the gospel is loved and proclaimed. We come to the Lord s Table as those who humbly and thankfully recognize that our standing before the Father is completely dependent upon the righteousness of Jesus Christ, the Reality behind this meal, and not our own merits. The Words of Institution The Giving and Receiving of the Bread and the Cup Please wait until all have been served, so we may eat and drink together. The cup trays contain wine on the inner rings and grape juice on the outer ring. Silent Prayers for Communing with Jesus Christ Prayer of Thanks. Heavenly Father, thank you for all that you are, and all that you have done for me, and all you promise to do and be for me in Jesus. Thank you for giving me such a great salvation in him. Thank you for forgiving all my sins, crediting me with his righteousness, and adopting me as your dearly loved child. May I never lose sight of the grace you have so freely given me, and may every area of my life reflect that grace to others. In Jesus powerful name, Amen. Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus Christ, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever dared admit, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt on the cross, taking the judgment I deserved in order to offer me complete forgiveness. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as my Savior and Lord. Amen. Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need, and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the True and Living Bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the pioneer and finisher of my faith. Amen. Prayer of Commitment to God s People Lord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in baptism and in a life of committed discipleship in your church. Grant that I may take the steps necessary to be one with your people and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen. Prayer for Covenant Children (Not yet received into communing membership) Lord Jesus, thank you for placing me inside your covenant family, the Church. Help me more and more to know you, to love you, and to follow you as your faithful disciple. Amen. 8
WE RESPOND TO THE GOSPEL WITH SACRIFICIAL GENEROSITY Worshiping God through Our Financial Giving Because God has lavished us with the riches of his grace in Jesus, we give our money joyfully and sacrificially for the spread of the gospel in our city and around the world. Jesus, I My Cross Have Taken Words by Henry Lyte, Music by Bill Moore Jesus, I my cross have taken, all to leave and follow Thee; Destitute, despised, forsaken, Thou from hence my all shalt be. Perish every fond ambition, all I ve sought or hoped or known; Yet how rich is my condition, God and heav n are still my own. Let the world despise and leave me, they have left my Savior, too. Human hearts and looks deceive me; Thou art not, like them, untrue. O while Thou dost smile upon me, God of wisdom, love and might, Foes may hate and friends disown me, show Thy face and all is bright. Soul then know thy full salvation, rise o er sin and fear and care; Joy to find in every station, something still to do or bear. Think what Spirit dwells within thee, think what Father s smiles are thine! Think that Jesus died to win thee, child of heav n, canst thou repine? Hasten on from grace to glory, armed by faith and winged by prayer; Heav n s eternal days before me, God s own hand shall guide me there. Soon shall close my earthly mission, swift shall pass my pilgrim days, Hope shall change to glad fruition, faith to sight, and prayer to praise. WE ARE SENT INTO THE WORLD TO MAKE DISCIPLES The Benediction Romans 15:13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. The Dismissal Let us go from here, in the eternal security of our crucified, risen King, Jesus Christ, to live as his joyful, obedient followers. All: Thanks be to God! Please remain for refreshments and conversation in the fellowship hall. 9
