As an Extra Ordinary Eucharistic Minister there are times when I am distributing the Holy Eucharist that I feel so close to the person who is receiving it, that my eyes fill with tears. I had once attended a retreat where the priest once told us to look into the eyes of the person we are giving Holy Eucharist to and see Christ. Well, I love it when I get to distribute the Holy Eucharist, because I do see Christ in my brother or sister with whom I am sharing Him with. I look and feel so close to them, if only for a brief moment, but I know we are sharing something special together that only we, as Catholics, can share, the true Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. What a Blessing! Taking the Eucharist to the Home Bound and visiting with them is also a blessing because I get to sit and talk with them and read the word of God with them, even if they don t remember who I am. I might be the only visitor they see all day, besides their nurses or caregivers. But the hugs, the talks, and the sharing of Christ with these friends of our community are things I will always treasure. These moments of sharing have not been a part of my life for long, it s only been since I have joined this wonderful parish we call Holy Family. From the moment my wife Susie and I walked through the doors of Holy Family we were greeted with smiles and given a big hug from Father Cusack, the priest at that time. This parish has taught me more about my religion and faith than any other church I have been associated with. But l learned I had to reciprocate, I too had to be loving, caring, welcoming and giving of myself. It took some prodding from a priest and the fine folks of Holy Family, but my wife and I soon blossomed and stepped out of our comfort zone and got involved. In the years that we have been at Holy Family we have grown to love this parish, grown in our faith and spirituality, and our love of Christ and others, simply because we began to use our talents and time. Being a part of the Combined Pastoral and Stewardship Council I would like to invite you to get out of your comfort zone. We have been talking about our efforts to enhance our spirit of Welcoming in recent months. Ask God to show you your talent and ask Him where you should be spending your time. Where can you best use your friendly, welcoming and comforting nature or your loving and caring spirit? God wants you to come to Him and ask Him. He loves it when we come to Him in prayer, especially when you are asking Him what His will is for you today. Blessings! Pete Murray, member of the Combined Pastoral and Stewardship Councils 2

4 Garden of Forgiveness, Job s Tears Three events this past Lent and Easter season inspired Van Bensett to dream of doing something beautiful for Jesus and Mother Teresa. You may recall that Van was one of the Lay Missionaries of Charity who brought the Blessed Mother Teresa exhibit to us this past winter. First, on March 4 th, four Missionaries of Charity Sisters Anselm, Marguerite, Judith and Reginette were martyred by ISIS in Yemen. Second, on March 15 th, Pope Francis announced the canonization of Mother Teresa on September 4 th. Third, on Divine Mercy Sunday, Pope Francis called for dioceses around the world to establish monuments of mercy to commemorate the Year of Mercy. Fr. Sabastian, a Missionary of Charity Contemplative, in a recent letter called our four new martyrs - Martyrs of Charity. They have inspired Van to dream about how we can make their witness known locally. Van s idea is to build a "Martyrs of Charity Garden of Forgiveness". It would be the first place dedicated to them in the United States. As you may know, Mother Teresa's favorite Rosary, and the rosaries used by the sisters are made from "Job's Tears". Tear shaped and grey, the seeds of this ornamental grass are said to represent the tears shed by Job who endured suffering but never lost his faith. Small and pea-like, Job s tears grow with a natural hole through its center to make perfect prayer beads. Originating in India, these prayer beads have been used for millennia by Hindus, Buddhist, Muslims and Christians. Rosaries made of Job's tears are often known as "Mother Teresa's Beads," since Mother Teresa herself used a rosary made with Job s tears. "Job's Tears" would be grown in the "Garden of Forgiveness" (by the front entrance of the school on the grounds of the Convent in Chicago) and to harvest the seeds. The seeds would be used to make prayer "decades." The "decades" radiate prayer and witness of the martyrs back into the community and family life. The witness of the sisters becomes our seeds of hope! Van is hoping to dedicate the Garden as part of Blessed Teresa s canonization celebrations in Chicago. Because the Missionaries of Charity could not accept any type of donation for the incredible blessing of the exhibit that they brought to us, due to the cause for sainthood, Holy Family has made a donation toward this garden in Chicago. If you are interested in helping with the garden, making Job s Tears rosaries with them, visiting the Garden of Forgiveness, or volunteering with the Sisters of Charity soup kitchen or other works of mercy, please contact the parish office and we can connect you with Van Bensett, LMC or the convent for the Missionaries of Charity. Church Etiquette In the Presence of the Blessed Sacrament The Blessed Sacrament is now present in the tabernacle in our sanctuary! How does this affect our church demeanor and etiquette? * Genuflection and Bowing Genuflection, bending down to touch our knee to the floor, is a sign of reverence. Should conditions make it physically difficult to genuflect, a profound bow of the head and shoulders conveys the same reverence. When do we genuflect to Christ in the tabernacle? When we enter the pew as we come into church, and when we exit the pew as we leave the church. (It is not necessary to genuflect during the Communion procession.) Outside Mass, we also genuflect when entering the sanctuary, or when crossing in front of the tabernacle as we move from one side of the church to the other. * Talking and Socializing In Church: Both during and outside Mass, we maintain the Sacred Silence of the church in reverence for Christ, as well as in respect for the holy space and those in prayer. If conversation is necessary, please keep it to a whisper. Visiting with each other before and after Mass is a good thing! Just remember it is okay to remind each other to move into the narthex or hallway. * Appropriate Dress: Modest and appropriate dress reflects respect for Christ in the Blessed Sacrament, and for ourselves as well! True! God would be just as happy to see us no matter what we are wearing, but the Mass, our highest act of worship, is an extra- ordinary event! God invites us to Divine Communion with Him, offering His Perfect Self to us in the Eucharist, and inviting us to offer the best of ourselves to Him. Appropriate dress does not need to be fancy. It is being mindful that our outward appearance can affect inward attitude, sense of awe, appreciation, gratitude, humility and reverence for the King Who calls us. Each Mass is an invitation to the most sacred banquet! As we dress to attend, consider: Am I offering the best of myself to God today? Am I showing respect for myself and for He who summons me? 4
5 Kind Like Katie Memorial Blood Drive (1 st Annual) Results The results of the July 12 blood drive is a testimonial to the kindness Katie Fairchild shared in relationships with community, family and friends. DIOCESE OF GRAND RAPIDS OFFICE FOR WORSHIP NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF PASTORAL MUSICIANS GRAND RAPIDS CHAPTER Celebra ng the Jubilee Year of Mercy in a Fes val of Congrega onal Song Pope Francis has called upon everyone in the Church to take an active part in this Jubilee Year of Mercy, by celebrating and embracing the Father s mercy for us, and by being agents of that mercy to others. One way to take an active part is to join with your brother and sister Christians in a festival of hymns and songs centered on this theme, interspersed with brief readings from the words of Pope Francis on the many facets of God s mercy.. A combination of classic organ led hymns and contemporary ensemble led songs will petition for God s mercy, charge us to be ministers of the corporal works of mercy, lead us to address reconciliation between peoples and nations, to give personal witness, and to sing songs of praise for this gracious gift. This for everyone who has ever sung a hymn or song in church. Check the schedule for the dates and places nearest you. All events begin at 7pm. Three dates and locations remain 9/16 Cathedral of Saint Andrew 9/23 Holy Family, Caledonia 9/30 Saint Francis de Sales, Muskegon St. Anne's Mom's Group Attention, Holy Family moms! Please join us on Tuesday August 9 at 7pm for a backyard bonfire! Come hang out, relax, and socialize with other moms. Please bring a chair, a snack to share (optional), and a beverage. This event will be held at the house of one of our mom's group members. For address information, please contact Allison at or AllyLeigh16@yahoo.com Are You or Do You Know Someone Thinking about Becoming Catholic? When I finally realized that God had been knocking and asking to come in for a long time, I entered the RCIA process with a desire to let Him in. I had many questions and the team always made me feel very comfortable. I found the time to be so nurturing that I joined the team and have been happily helping others answer their questions ever since." --Jennifer Take a closer look during the upcoming season of Inquiry sessions, where people gather for questions and answers about the Catholic Church, to consider and discern full membership in the Catholic Church. Learn more about the Catholic Church and your own faith at the same time. It is a casual, non-threatening, conversational environment led by gracious and helpful parishioners. Inquiry sessions begin Tuesday, September 13 at 7pm. Please let us know if you are thinking of coming by contacting Christine Shafer ( x224), or if you d just like to know more. 5
6 Summer me Faith Happenings with Holy Family Youth Ministry A group of Holy Family high schoolers attended the Steubenville Youth Conference in Steubenville, Ohio at the end of June. We had an incredibly beautiful time learning about our faith while praising and worshipping God. Speakers from all over the world came to share their stories and to help us deepen our personal relationships with God. We also had a lot of fun with the massive amount of cicadas that where infiltrating the Franciscan University campus during the three days we were there. ;) It was a great weekend that flew by but changed us each profoundly. We praise God for the gift of that conference and for our safe travels. The Charity Mission Trip to Chicago was a beautiful c h a l l e n g e. T h e h ig h schoolers, their chaperones, and I stayed with the Missionaries of Charity and served with them for a week. We started each day with Mass, breakfast, and morning prayer. Then we made our way to the soup kitchen that the Missionaries of Charity run. We spent an hour or so preparing a meal for people who are hungry and homeless. Then we would serve the food, spend time with the guests at the kitchen, and cleanup/do dishes. It was extremely rewarding to serve food to the wonderful people that we met. We then would head back to the convent to have lunch and to pray with the sisters again. The afternoons were filled with exploring Chicago, building community amongst our group, and doing work around the house at the convent. Overall the trip was a prayerful learning experience that helped us all to rely on God more and be more compassionate to the poor. Whitney Pastrano, Coordinator of Middle & High School Youth Ministry A special thank you to our generous parish for the prayers and financial support of both of these trips! 6
