1 St. Luke s Episcopal Church The Northern Light The Episcopal Diocese of Fond du Lac: Being Communi es of God s Mercy and Delight October 2018 From Mother Barb Many thanks to Mike and Marcia Eischen for leading the Eclipsing Empire series over the summer. It was informa ve and inspira onal and well a ended. All in all, a great success! End of Life Planning As to further offerings, Deacon Joy, John Hauser and I are pu$ng together a program around end of life planning. I an cipate that it will cover wills and trusts, planned giving, hospice and other care, and funeral planning. Plans right now are for three a'ernoons in October, with two speakers each a'ernoon. More details to come watch your E-News. Exploring Our Faith: Disciple Bible Study When I first arrived at St. Luke's, we did a Bible study called Disciple. At that me, it was a 36 (maybe only 33) week series, but a number of people a ended and hung in there un l the end. I said then and will say again, that it's the best Bible study I've run across, combining expert lectures, background reading in the theological and historical context of the subject of the week, daily reading and reflec on and discussion. This is a revised curriculum and is 24 weeks long; during that me however, we at least touch on about 80% of the Bible. It will start in November, mee ng Thursday mornings from between 2.5 and 3 hours. I( )*+, +,,-. I am hopeful that there are some folks who haven't taken the earlier course (or would like a refresher) who would be interested in doing this. We would start in November. I'll be pu$ng up a sign-up sheet in clipboard alley. If you want further informa on, please let me know. St. Luke s Blessing of the Pets Sunday, Oct. 7, 1p Note time was wrong in the last issue. Zimbabwe and Wisconsin Zimbabwe, (zihm BAH bway), formerly called Rhodesia, officially the Republic of Zimbabwe, is a landlocked country in Southern Africa between the Zambezi and Limpopo Rivers. Most of the country is high plateau. Mt. Nyangani is Zimbabwe s highest point at 8,514 feet. The extreme eastern part is mountainous and is known as the Eastern Highlands. This area supports tropical evergreens and hardwood forest. Zimbabwe lies in the tropics but has a pleasant climate because of the high altude. Zimbabwe s summer lasts from October to April. Summers are hot and wet, winters are cool and dry. Zimbabwe has a centralized government divided into eight provinces with 16 official languages. English, Shona, and Ndebele are the most common. Some 85% of Zimbabweans are Chrisan. The largest Chrisan churches are Anglican, Roman Catholic, Seventh-Day Advensts and Methodist. The Diocese of Masvingo has the The Arthur Shearly Cripps Shrine in Maronda Mashanu. Cripps was known as the St Francis of Assisi of the African countryside. 3 The Northern Light Page 3 Our Companion Diocese, the Diocese of Masvingo The purpose of the Companion Diocese Commiee is to discern, promote and nurture a diocesan relaonship with another diocese within the Anglican Communion. In addion, the Commiee will assist churches and members of both dioceses expand their understanding of one another and nurture long-lasng friendships at all levels of the Church. We desire to encourage each other to live our Anglican identy in proclaiming the Good News of the Gospel in our local communies and within our cultural contexts. As members of the worldwide Anglican Communion, the Diocese recognizes our interdependence by developing relaonships across provincial boundaries. These relaonships exist to strengthen one another for the mutual mission and ministry of the Church to which we are called by Christ. In 2016, the Dioceses of Fond du Lac and Masvingo envisioned a companion rela- onship connecng Episcopalians/ Anglicans, across cultural and geographic boundaries, on a common pilgrimage of faith, hope, and love. There are similaries between the Dioceses of Masvingo and Fond du Lac, including seeking to be true to our Anglican understanding of the Chrisan faith, our common heritage, number of churches, and parishioners. The companion diocesan relaonship, whereby churches and members expand their understanding of one another and nurture long-lasng friendships at all levels of the Church, commits to: to assist each other to live our Anglican identy in proclaiming the Good News of the Gospel in our local communi- es and within our cultural contexts to pray regularly for the welfare of one another and to bear the burdens of one another as we are able with God s help. A Prayer for the Companion Dioceses of Masvingo, in Zimbabwe and of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, USA. O God, who created all peoples in your image, we thank you for the wonderful diversity of races and cultures in this world. Enrich our lives by the ever-widening circles of fellowship, thru our companion relaonship with the Diocese of Masvingo in Zimbabwe and the Diocese of Fond du Lac in Wisconsin, USA. And show us your presence in those who differ most from us, and allow us to learn from each other with open hearts and minds; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Adapted from The Prayer of Thanksgiving #7 For the Diversity of Cultures and Races, BCP page 840. About the Diocese of Masvingo The Diocese of Masvingo is the fi'h and newest Anglican Diocese in Zimbabwe, established in It is part of the Anglican Province of the Church of Central Africa and a member of the worldwide Anglican Communion. It is about 8,500 miles from the Diocese of Fond du Lac. The Right Reverend Godfrey Tawonezvi is the first Anglican Bishop of Masvingo. Starng from almost nothing the Diocese has developed during its short life and, despite many challenges, financial, geographical and polical, is now in good heart. New churches are being built, congregaons are growing, able young clergy are being ordained and the Diocese is also serving the people of Zimbabwe through its educaon and development work. The Diocese of Masvingo covers the central south poron of Zimbabwe, Fond du Lac the northeast third of Wisconsin. Masvingo has 22 churches, addional mission staons and 15 Diocesan schools, hospitals and clinics, Fond du Lac 37 worshipping locaons. Masvingo covers about 40,000 square miles, Fond du Lac 18,000 square miles. The total popula- on in Masvingo is about 2.2 million, Fond du Lac 1.5 million. Two issues face the diocese. Food insecurity comes from drought and errac rainfall paerns, a ruined infrastructure and an economy in collapse. HIV prevalence of 13.7% of the populaon is a key barrier to development. 70% of the populaon rely on farming for their livelihoods, but HIVrelated illnesses prevent them from growing the harvest they need. Zimbabwe has the highest rate of HIV orphans in the world, with one in four children having lost one of both parents to AIDS.

It may also provide direcon to those serving on commiees and commissions, as well as the diocese and its congregaons. This can be accomplished by adopng a resoluon that includes a call to ac- on or by changing the Diocesan Constuon or Canons. In addion to our acve and rered Episcopal clergy who have seat, voice and vote, our delegates are Ray and Carol Ann Osinski, and David Skidmore who is on St. Luke s vestry and the Diocese of Fond du Lac s Execuve Council. ATTENDING CONVENTION Anyone a6ending convenon (delegates and visitors ) must register. A $95 fee covers meals for the 2 days, hospitality (special guests, tellers, and seminarians), facili- es, supplies and postage. Pay online or by check BEFORE convenon. DELEGATES Lay delegates are elected as congregaonal representa- ves. Clergy delegates are Canonically Resident (meaning ordained and under the authority of the Bishop) and includes priests, deacons, bishops in acve ministry as well as those who are rered. Following the convenon, these guests will be travelling around the diocese and vising people in congregaons. See separate ar2- cles on pages 2 and 3. Prayers for the Time Before and During Convention For the Diocese O God, by your grace you have called us in this Diocese of Fond du Lac to a goodly fellowship of faith. Bless our Bishop, our clergy, and all our people. Grant that your Word may be truly preached and truly heard, your Sacraments faithfully administered and faithfully received. By your Spirit, fashion our lives according to the example of your Son, and grant that we may show the power of your love to all among whom we live; through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN For a Church Convenon Almighty and ever living God, Source of all wisdom and understanding, be present with those who take counsel at the 142nd Convenon of the Diocese of Fond du Lac for the renewal and mission of your church in this place. Teach us in all things to seek first your honor and glory. Guide us to perceive what is right, and grant us both the courage to pursue it and the grace to accomplish it; through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN

5 The Northern Light Page 5 Canterbury Cinema & Potluck Wednesday October 10 5:00 p.m. POTLUCK, please sign up in Clipboard Alley for specific menu sugges2ons and feel free to invite a friend or neighbor. Won t You Be My Neighbor (2018), Documentary Charmingly so'-spoken and yet powerfully incisive expressing his profound ideals, Fred Rogers was a unique presence on television for generaons. Through interviews of his family and colleagues, his life is explored as a man who found an important calling to provide an oasis for children in a video sea of violent bombardment. That proved to be his landmark series, Mister Rogers Neighborhood (1968), a show that could gently delve into important subjects no other children's show would have dared for that me. In doing so, Rogers experienced a career where his sweet-tempered idealism charmed and influenced the world whether it be scores of children on TV or recalcitrant authories in government. However, that beloved personality also hid Rogers' deep self-doubts about himself and occasional misjudgments even as he proved a rock of understanding in mes of tragedy for a world that did not always comprehend a man of such noble character. (See Kenneth Chisholm (kchishol@rogers.com)). Lectionary Conversation Wednesdays, 1:30p The leconary group takes an in-depth look at the upcoming Sunday scriptures, including looking at the history and theology of a given passage. Needless to say, that makes listening to the sermon on Sunday a much more rewarding experience. This class isn t sequenal, so feel free to drop in on any Wednesday. Book Club Our next read is Eleanor Oliphant Is completely fine by Gail Honeyman. We will meet in the Canterbury Room on Tuesday, October 2, at noon. Bring a lunch and bring a friend! #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER A Reese Witherspoon Book Club Pick "Beaufully wrien and incredibly funny, Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine is about the importance of friendship and human connecon. I fell in love with Eleanor, an eccentric and regimented loner whose life beaufully unfolds a'er a chance encounter with a stranger; I think you will fall in love, too " --Reese Witherspoon. No one's ever told Eleanor that life should be beer than fine. Meet Eleanor Oliphant: She struggles with appropriate social skills and tends to say exactly what she's thinking. Nothing is missing in her carefully metabled life of avoiding social interacons, where weekends are punctuated by frozen pizza, vodka, and phone chats with Mummy. But everything changes when Eleanor meets Raymond, the bumbling and deeply unhygienic IT guy from her office. When she and Raymond together save Sammy, an elderly gentleman who has fallen on the sidewalk, the three become the kinds of friends who rescue one another from the lives of isolaon they have each been living. And it is Raymond's big heart that will ulmately help Eleanor find the way to repair her own profoundly damaged one. Soon to be a major moon picture produced by Reese Witherspoon, Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine is the smart, warm, and upli'ing story of an out-of-the-ordinary heroine whose deadpan weirdness and unconscious wit make for an irresisble journey R.H.HE.1+(I T*0,. W*0 H?3. D+.@ Jean Swanson, Mother of Jude Teicher, a St. Luke s member We thank you God for giving Jean to us, her family and friends, to know and to love as a companion on our earthly pilgrimage. In your boundless compassion console us who mourn. Give us faith to see in death the gate of eternal life, so that in quiet confidence we may continue our course on earth, until, by your call, we are reunited with those who have gone before. Give rest, O Christ, to your servants with your saints, where sorrow and pain are no more, neither sighing, but life everlasting. The Book of Common Prayer

6 The Northern Light Page 6 More from Mother Barb Focus on Fairness: Continuing the Conversation on Income Inequality Last year, St. Luke's was a sponsor, along with Shepherd of the Bay, Ephraim Moravian and Unitarian Fellowship, of a program on Income Inequality. This year we'll be offering a connuaon of that program with St. Luke s as a sponsor. On October 16th there will be an economist from Lawrence University speaking on the topic. On October 24, will be a naonally known speaker, Chuck Collins. On October 27, will be a forum for polical candidates to air their views on the topic. The series is called Focus on Fairness and promises to be enlightening and inspiring. Issues around income inequality and the lack of equal opportunity are becoming more and more pressing and, while they are polical because they require policy decisions, they are, first and foremost, Biblical issues. Please watch for more informaon in E-News, and plan to a6end. COMMUNITY HEALTH INFORMATION PROGRAMS WHAT IS A COMMUNITY HEALTH INFORMATION PROGRAM? 7 The Northern Light Page 7 August Vestry Notes Beginning in September, Vestry will begin with a scripture reading. Vestry retreat went well and will help us prepare for the Bishop s visit. The Bishop has given Mother Barb permission to stay on as Rector. The Senior Warden has been authorized to write a leer extending Mother Barb s ministry as Rector for St. Luke s. Carol Ann and Ray Osinski, and David Skidmore will be St Luke s representaves at Convenon. One of the values that came out of the retreat was To Be of Service. Discussion took place about the possibility of St. Luke s providing a community Thanksgiving dinner. The Cornerstone in Baileys Harbor did not offer the dinner this last year due to lack of volunteers to serve, etc. Could we fill that role for the Cornerstone? Diana will ask the owner if they would be willing to resume this meal if we could support them. Several ideas from retreat have been implemented. A tree dedicated to Sarah Wright, Marjorie Binder and BIbbs McGaigan will be dedicated on August 13. Mother Barb has been asked to provide comments and meditaon. Peninsula Music Fesval, purchased the tree. The small shed to the west of St Luke s needs to be demolished. The cost is approximately $5K and will be paid from the Legacy Fund. Carol Ann and George reviewed the most recent informaon on the Canterbury Room sound abatement. Carol Ann also did some addional online research and found a study on sound reducon in mul-use venues. Overall, the study suggested that the most cost effecve and closest to the room occupants is carpet. Bids have been received for the same carpet. Vestry agreed to move forward with carpet les. George and Carol Ann will check to be sure there is overage in the order so we have replacement les from the same dye lot or should the carpet paern be disconnued. Doug has suggested that once we receive addional direcon on invesng, from the Diocese, St. Luke s procure professional management of St. Luke s investments. Vestry needs to consider what our policy on investments should be. RECTOR: The Rev. Barbara Sajna, 2100 Ridges Road Baileys Harbor, WI Home: Cell: Church Phone: (920) Deacon: The Rev.
