SHEHERD OF THE DESERT EVANGEIA UTHERAN HURH The Feast of the Baptism of Our ord January 10, 11, 2015 A Holy ommunion elebration with Focus on Native American oncerns "reated, Redeemed and alled by God, we reach out to all, by sharing our gifts and the unconditional love of Jesus."
Welcome to Worship at Shepherd of the Desert lease stand as you are able when noted. reludes "I Was There to Hear Your Borning ry" "To the Jordan s Flowing Waters" "Spirit Song" Words of Welcome and Ministry Moments Hymn "All reatures of Our God and King" 2 Kathy Tofanelli, Organist John Ylvisaker Kathy Donlan Tunseth John Wimber astor Daniel Defassio
Greeting The rich presence of God, the beginning and end of all that is good, be with you now and always. And also with you. rayer of the Day Holy God, creator of light and giver of goodness, your voice moves over the waters. Immerse us in your grace, and transform us by your Spirit, that we may follow after your Son, Jesus hrist, our Savior and ord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. 3
We bow our knees to the reator from whom every family in heaven and earth is named. We give thanks for the Nations of the Native American who roamed this country, long before our society, cared for the land and found generous gifts of the earth which they shared with those who then overpowered them. Where there once was war and bloodshed, let there be healing; where there was bitterness, let there be new dignity. We pray in the name of Jesus the iberator and Reconciler. Amen. The ry of asualty For broken treaties and promises to Native Americans by our society, God, Have Mercy. For the skeptism people have had about Native Americans that have made many reservations into starving ghettos, God, Have Mercy. For the fact that, because of neglect, Native American infant mortality after the first month of life is three times the national average, God, Have Mercy. For the fact that Native Americans live on an average to the age of 68 while the rest of the population lives on an average to the age of 79, God, Have Mercy. For the fact that Native American yearly average income is half the national poverty level, God, Have Mercy. The evidence of our broken humanity and bondage to sin is seen in these ways and many others. Our hope is in the mercy of God who forgives, renews, and leads, that we may again walk in God s ways. Amen. 4
Hymn of raise "This is My Father s World" 1st Reading Genesis 1:1-5 2 In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. 3Then God said, "et there be light"; and there was light. 4And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. 5God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day. The Word of the ord. Thanks be to God. 5
The salms Speak What is life? It is the flash of a firefly in the night. It is the breath of a buffalo in the winter time. It is the little shadow which runs across the grass and loses itself in the sunset. Thou dost sweep humans away: They are like a dream, like grass which is renewed in the morning. In the morning it flourishes and is renewed. In the evening it fades and withers. salm 90: 5-6 Do not misunderstand me but understand me fully with reference to my affection for the land. I never said the land was mine to do with it as I chose. The one who has the right to dispose of it is the one who created it. I claim a right to live on my land and accord you the privilege to live on yours. The earth is the creator s and the fullness thereof, the world and they that dwell therein. For the creator has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the floods. s. 24:1-2 The government sent to us those who think themselves human. They are not human. They have no honesty. They are an unsightly beast. Their faces are twisted from the appearance of honest people. There is no truth in their mouth: their heart is destruction. Their throat is an open sepulcher. They flatter with their tongue. salm 5:9 For those who have put us in these square boxes. Our power is gone and we are dying, for the power is not in us any more but there is another world. My God, My God, why have you forsaken me for God has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted, neither has God hid, but when the afflicted cried unto God, God hears. salm 22 2nd Reading (1st time will be read in English, 2nd time will be read in Navajo) Acts 19:1-7 While Apollos was in orinth, aul passed through the interior regions and came to Ephesus, where he found some disciples. 2He said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?" They replied, "No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit." 3Then he said, "Into what then were you baptized?" They answered, "Into John's baptism." 4aul said, "John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus." 5On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the ord Jesus. 6When aul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied - 7altogether there were about twelve of them. The Word of the ord. Thanks be to God. 6
Gospel Verse "Alleluia" The Holy Gospel according to Mark, the 1st hapter. Holy Gospel Mark 1:4-11 4John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. 6Now John was clothed with camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7He proclaimed, "The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. 8I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." 9In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. 11And a voice came from heaven, "You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased." 9 A reedal witness: are of the Earth Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. The earth is a gift to us from the hand of God. Do you believe in Jesus hrist, son of God? I believe in Jesus hrist, God s only son, our ord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under ontius ilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God. He will come again to judge the living and dead. The earth became God s home. God became a human remembering all creatures as he was conceived and born of Mary. He felt the fury of death, the final mark of our humanness. He entered the gentile earth, a resting place from the savage hand of human beings. On the third day he rose from the grave, full-bodied and strong, bringing life not only for all people, but renewal for the whole earth. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic hurch, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. As persons are renewed, the earth is refreshed. As we recover communion, the mystery of earth returns to enrich us. As we forgive and are forgiven, the lesser creatures reveal their wonder. As resurrection comes to us and new respect for the body, the earth regains its integrity. The care of God for us opens us to care for the earth. A A rayers of the Gathered ommunity Our reator, Giver of all good things, You have provided great riches on earth for all. Open our eyes now to see Your providing care. As we look at simple seeds, at cattle on a thousand hills, at forests and rocks, water and fish, at great barns and tall buildings, and homes that shelter us from storm and cold; As we look and feel and taste Your gifts help us to take them for granted-by YOU - but not for us alone, O God; hildren, men & women - all people - all depend upon your gifts to survive and prosper. The eyes of all wait on you, O God, and you deal out your gifts to all, according to the season. You open your hand and there is enough to satisfy the needs of all. 9
A A Our reator, Giver of all good things, we give thanks for our large share of Your openhanded gifts. Open our ears now to the cry of those who cannot say this prayer of thanks, those who have been pushed aside and forgotten; In this rich land, certain ancestors took the richest part - the most fertile acres, the fields closest to water - uprooting the first families on that land, marching them off to distant and confining reservations. To pursue our happiness we have continued to snatch your gifts, and have often forgotton you, the giver. Forgive us, God. Open our hearts now to the ross of hrist. You will not turn away from us when we repent. Forgive us, God. Open our eyes, our ears, and minds to learn from our brothers and sisters who are Native Americans: Their reverence for the gifts of nature - their patience with us - their capacity to endure - their indignation of injustice - their concern for each other. Open our hearts now to accept these gifts from them. To share with them the bounty of Your earth, and the richness of your love, through Jesus hrist our ord. Here other intercessions may be offered. (An intercession will also be offered in Navajo.) Trusting your love and healing, O God, we commend to you all for whom we pray, knowing you will hear and answer, through hrist our ord. Amen. Sharing of the eace The peace of the ord be with you always And also with you. Offertory - You may share your offerings as you come forward for Holy ommunion. The Hunger Jar is also available. Sat. -Shepherd Singers "Who Is He?" Sun.-hancel hoir "ome, My ight, My ife" B. Hanby Eugene Butler Offertory rayer A Merciful God, as grains of wheat scattered upon the hills were gathered together to become one bread, so let your church be gathered together from the ends of the earth into your kingdom, for yours is the glory through Jesus hrist, now and forever. Amen. 10
Great Thanksgiving 11
reface 12
Sanctus Eucharistic rayer You are indeed holy, almighty and merciful God; You are most holy, and great is the majesty of your glory. You so loved the world that you gave your only Son, that whoever believes in Him may not perish but have eternal life. Having come into the world, He fulfilled for us your holy will and accomplished our salvation. In the night in which he was betrayed, Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, He took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people Do this for the remembrance of me. Remembering, therefore, his salutary command, his life-giving assion and death, his glorious resurrection and ascension, and his promise to come again, we give thanks to you, God Almighty, not as we ought, 13
but as we are able; and we implore you mercifully to accept our praise and thanksgiving, and, with your Word and Holy Spirit, to bless us, your servants, and these your own gifts of bread and wine; that we and all who share in the body and blood of your Son may be filled with heavenly peace and joy, and, receiving the forgiveness of sin, may be sanctified in soul and body, and have our portion with all your saints. Amen. ome ord Jesus. All honor and glory are yours, O God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, in your holy hurch, now and forever. Amen. ord s rayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. Agnus Dei The ommunion Distribution - by continuous tables. All baptized hristians who believe hrist is truly present in the bread and wine of the Sacrament of Holy ommunion are welcome at hrist s table at Shepherd of the Desert. lease follow the directions of the ushers as you come forward to the altar rail by the center aisle. 14
You may kneel if you are able. Grape juice may be substituted for wine if you let your server know by raising your index finger as you are served. Once you have been served, you then may return to your seat by the side aisles. You may also share your offerings as you come forward for Holy ommunion. The Hunger Jar is also available. ost ommunion Hymn "Son of God, Eternal Savior" ost ommunion rayer A O God, as a mother comforts her child, so you comfort your people, carrying us in your arms and satisfying us with this food and drink, the body and blood of hrist. Send us now as your disciples, Amen 15 EW 655
