2 For the Healing of the Nations A Festival of Hymns and Scriptures for Peace Christ Presbyterian Church, Canton, Ohio Tuscarawas St. McKinley Ave. Sunday, 9 October, 5:00 pm Kindly silence all electronic devices and disconnect from media. We invite you, in heart and mind and body to remove yourself from the noise of this troubled world, and enter into a brief time of mindfulness and increased awareness of God s plan for a better world. Opening Greeting Hymn No. 448 Peace of God be with you. Peace of God be with you. Salaam, salaam. Peace of God be with you. Both being Semitic languages, Arabic and Hebrew have many similar words, as can be heard here in Salaam, which sounds much like Shalom. This is the Arabic form of the customary style of greeting in the ancient Near East. It can be found in Scripture as early as the greeting of Joseph s steward to his brothers (Genesis 43:23), and it is the greeting of the risen Christ to the disciples (John 20:19, 21, 26) At this moment, all are invited to exchange greetings of peace, such as: may the peace of the Lord be with you... and also with you... or: and with thy spirit, etc. I. Through individual and group study, prayer, and discussion, we evaluated over 60 hymns and 20 scriptural passages for possible inclusion in this presentation. We encourage all participants this evening to investigate further the vast wealth of hymns, prayers, and scriptures God gives us for our work in our world, our nation, our state, our community, and our personal lives. Rosie Anderson, Mario Buchanan, David J. Kienzle, Dottie McGrew, Laura Milligan, Tom Okonak, Karen Peterson, Kathy Schlabach, Michael Wallace p. 5
6 INSTRUMENTALISTS: Mario Buchanan, organ & piano Dianne Williams, flute Alexandra Piepenbrink, oboe & English horn Teresa Houston, clarinet Jon Mathewson, guitar Scott Johnston, trumpet Jack Brndiar, trumpet Margaret Tung, French horn James Albrecht, trombone J.c. Sherman, trombone Rich Moore, percussion All are invited to return to Christ Church for a Taste of Cuba: Misa Cubana by José Maria Vitier, for choir, soloists, orchestra on Sunday, 6 November, at 5:00 pm John Wesley s Directions for Singing was included as an appendage to Select Hymns: with Tunes Annext (1761): That this part of Divine Worship may be the more acceptable to God, as well as the more profitable to yourself and others, be careful to observe the following directions: I. Learn these Tunes before you learn any others; afterwards learn as many as you please. II. Sing them exactly as they are printed here, without altering or mending them at all; and if you have learned to sing them otherwise, unlearn it as soon as you can. III. Sing All. See that you join with the congregation as frequently as you can. Let not a slight degree of weakness or weariness hinder you. If it is a cross to you, take it up and you will find a blessing. IV. Sing lustily and with good courage. Beware of singing as if you were half dead, or half asleep; but lift up your voice with strength. Be no more afraid of your voice now, nor more ashamed of its being heard, than when you sung the songs of Satan. V. Sing modestly. Do not bawl, so as to be heard above or distinct from the rest of the congregation, that you may not destroy the harmony; but strive to unite your voices together, so as to make one clear melodious sound. VI. Sing in Time: whatever time is sung, be sure to keep with it. Do not run before nor stay behind it; but attend closely to the leading voices, and move therewith as exactly as you can. And take care you sing not too slow. This drawling way naturally steals on all who are lazy; and it is high time to drive it out from among us, and sing all our tunes just as quick as we did at first. VII. Above all sing spiritually. Have an eye to God in every word you sing. Aim at pleasing him more than yourself, or any other creature. In order to this attend strictly to the sense of what you sing, and see that your Heart is not carried away with the sound, but offered to God continually; so shall your singing be such as the Lord will approve of here, and reward when he cometh in the clouds of heaven. p. 6

8 Getting to Know Cuba: Its People, Faith, Music & Worship Friday, 4 6:00 Potluck Dinner and Presentation by The Rev. Dr. Homer and Becky Nye: The Presbyterian Church of Traverse City, MI., Retired and Member of The Presbyterian Cuba Connection Trips to Cuba and continuing interaction with Cuban churches and seminaries make Homer and Becky uniquely prepared to help us know the people, faith, music, and worship of Cuban Christians. Join us for dinner and conversation. Misa Cubana By José Maria Vitier Chancel Choir Concert with Orchestra Sunday, 6 November, 5:00pm Cuban composer and pianist, José Maria Vitier (b.1954) is known for music and movies and television, as well as compositions for piano, symphonic orchestra, chamber orchestra, among other formats. His style often combines the classical and Cuban folk music styles, as will be delightfully evident in Misa Cubana. Certainly there will be a strong presence of percussion instruments to spice up the flavors. We will perform the traditional mass movements such as Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei, along with other Latino/Hispanic songs in our Presbyterian hymnal, Glory to God.
