- 2 - Psalm 91 Qui habitat Gerald Knight He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High, abides under the shadow of the Almighty. He shall say to the Lord, You are my refuge and my stronghold, my God in whom I put my trust. He shall deliver you from the snare of the hunter and from the deadly pestilence. He shall cover you with his pinions, and you shall find refuge under his wings; his faithfulness shall be a shield and buckler. You shall not be afraid of any terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day; Of the plague that stalks in the darkness, nor of the sickness that lays waste at mid-day. A thousand shall fall at your side and ten thousand at your right hand, but it shall not come near you. Your eyes have only to behold to see the reward of the wicked. Because you have made the Lord your refuge, and the Most High your habitation, There shall no evil happen to you, neither shall any plague come near your dwelling. For he shall give his angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways. They shall bear you in their hands, lest you dash your foot against the stone. You shall tread upon the lion and adder; you shall trample the young lion and the serpent under your feet. Because he is bound to me in love, therefore will I deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my Name. He shall call upon me, and I will answer him; I am with him in trouble; I will rescue him and bring him to honor. With long life will I satisfy him, and show him my salvation. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. THE LESSONS Exodus 20:1-17 The Ten Commandments (Pew Bible, page 58) Lector: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. (silence) Magnificat Herbert Murrill My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. -- The Song of Mary; Luke 1:46-55
- 3 - I Corinthians 1:18-25 Christ the Power and Wisdom of God (Pew Bible, page 926) Lector: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. (silence) Nunc dimittis Murrill Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people, To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. -- The Song of Simeon; Luke 2:29-32 (standing) *Hymn No. 209 My Song Is Love Unknown LOVE UNKNOWN Remaining standing to recite: *The Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. (seated) THE PRAYERS Cantor: Choir: Cantor: Choir: The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Let us pray. Lord have mercy upon us. Christ have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. Neary
All may sing: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and glory are yours now and forever. AMEN. Cantor: O Lord, show thy mercy upon us; Choir : And grant us thy salvation. O Lord, save the state. And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee. Endue thy ministers with righteousness; And make thy chosen people joyful. O Lord, save thy people. And bless thine inheritance. Give peace in our time, O Lord. Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God. O God, make clean our hearts within us. And take not thy Holy Spirit from us. A Collect for the Third Sunday of Lent: Eternal God, your kingdom has broken into our troubled world through the life, death, and resurrection of your Son. Help us to hear your Word and obey it, that we may become instruments of your saving love; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. AMEN. A Collect for Sundays Lord God, whose Son our Savior Jesus Christ triumphed over the powers of death and prepared for us our place in the new Jerusalem: Grant that we, who have this day given thanks for his resurrection, may praise you in that City of which he is the light; and where he lives and reigns for ever and ever. AMEN. A Prayer for Mission Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, Lord, Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for your love s sake. AMEN.
MOTETS Christopher Tye O come, ye servants of the Lord, and praise his holy name. From early morn to setting sun, His might on earth proclaim. His laws are just, and glad the heart; He makes his mercies known; Ye princes come, ye people too, And bow before his throne. O Holy Spirit, Lord of grace, Eternal source of love, Inflame, we pray, our inmost hearts with fire from heaven above. As thou didst join with holiest bonds The Father and the Son, So fill us all with mutual love and knit our hearts in one. All who are able, please stand and pray: *The General Thanksgiving (in unison) Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ, for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen. Officiant: People: Let us bless the Lord. Thanks be to God All are invited to stand and sing: *HYMN No. 677 The Day Thou Gavest, Lord, Is Ended ST. CLEMENT *BENEDICTION *PROCESSION and ORGAN VOLUNTARY Levi Matheri Muriuki, guest organist Prelude and Fugue in B Major Op. 7, No. 1 Marcel Dupré Following this service a free-will offering is received by ushers at the exits; the public is invited to enjoy refreshments and conversation in the back section of the sanctuary.
Service Participants Chancel Choir of Christ Church David J. Kienzle, Director of Music Mario Buchanan, Organist Rev. Benjamin George, Officiant & Cantor Kevin Kutz, Lector Rev. Wendy L. Gray, Lector Katie Norton, Crucifer & Acolyte Levi Matheri Muriuki, Malone University Student Evensong is a standard liturgy of Evening Prayers set to music. In monastic traditions since the early middle ages, there were as many as nine prayer services for the daily devotions of the community. Those canonical hours, as they were called, could be visited by the general public for their own worship and spiritual enrichment. The standard order of scripture and prayers for evensong became established in British cathedrals, chapels, and collegiate churches as a combination of the liturgies from vespers (sung late in the afternoon) and compline (sung just before bedtime). The entire Psalter is sung on a carefully planned rotational basis throughout the week or the month, depending on the practices of each religious community. The Psalter was the hymnbook of the Temple at Jerusalem, used by our Lord Jesus Christ and all practicing Jews. The congregation at Evensong is invited to worship with heart and mind, by giving assent to the prayers with the expressions of AMEN: yes, Lord, that is MY prayer, too. Other opportunities for vocal participation include hymns from Glory to God book, led by the choir and organ. All are invited to sing on a monotone the Apostles Creed: the expression of our faith and of those who, generation by generation in the Christian Church, respond to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, crucified and alive. The first reading is a lesson from the Hebrew scriptures and is followed by the Magnificat, the Song of the Virgin Mary, when the promises of the Old Testament came true (Luke 1). The reading from the New Testament (Epistles or Gospels) proclaims the Good News of Jesus Christ, and is followed by the Nunc dimittis, the Song of Simeon when he had finally seen our Lord in the Temple at Jerusalem (Luke 2). There are several hundred marvelous musical settings of these two recurring canticles: from several centuries of great sacred repertoire, and from divinely inspired composers throughout the world. 8 WALKING THE LABYRINTH Sundays, Feb. 18 thru March 18 from 4:30 pm to 8:00 pm Holy Week: March 26, 27, 28 from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm Christ Church encourages the public to take advantage of our labyrinth for walking prayer and meditation; this can be especially enriching as a Lenten discipline. Labyrinths have appeared in many cultures since ancient times and in Christian spirituality since the fourth century. This divine imprint is found now in most religious traditions in various forms around the world. We welcome you to our labyrinth here in Westminster Hall as a walking meditation, a spiritual practice, or simply an opportunity to calm the mind and enjoy peace, quiet, and reflection. The design chosen for use here at Christ Church is patterned after the famous circular journey found in the floor of Chartres Cathedral in France around Westminster Hall is open for this opportunity on the six Sundays of Lent 4:30--8:00 pm. Our Holy Week schedule will include Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, from 8 am to 8 pm. Often, there are candles and music creating a worshipful atmosphere. Reading and drawing materials, and guided reflections provide additional spiritual aids. How to Walk the Labyrinth from Grace Cathedral in San Francisco Unlike a maze, a labyrinth has just one path, so there are no tricks to it and no dead ends. It is a two-way path, so you may meet others coming or going on the path. Three stages of the walk: Releasing A releasing, a letting go of the details of your life. This is the act of shedding thoughts and distractions. A time to open the heart and quiet the mind. Receiving When you reach the center, stay there as long as you like. It is a place of meditation and prayer. Receive what is there for you to receive. Returning As you leave, following the same path out of the center as you came in, you enter the third stage, which is joining God, your Higher Power, or the healing forces at work in the world. Each time you walk the labyrinth you become more empowered to find and do the work for which you feel your soul is reaching. Guidelines for the walk: Quiet your mind and become aware of your breath. Allow yourself to find the pace your body wants to go. Since the path is two-way, those going in will meet those coming out. You may pass people or let others step around you. Do what feels natural. Walk the labyrinth with an open mind and an open heart.
