1 echips Electronic Newsletter for and from the Wheaton Franciscans June-July 2012 Volume 4, Issue 6 Celebrating Commitment CM Jeanne Connolly I admit I get emotional at anniversary celebrations or when I read about people who have dedicated a significant period of their life in service to more than themselves. Think of the couple who has been married for 40, 50, or more years and still enjoy sharing life together. Think about the employee who for 10, 20, or more years has faithfully and gladly carried out the tasks at hand from the most mundane to the most visionary in order to serve the common good. Think of the Sister, Brother, or Priest who for 25, 40, 50, 60, or more years has served God by serving others as a teacher, nurse, administrator, spiritual guide, activist, home keeper, and/or leader. Their lives are inspiring because we know it hasn t been easy we know that relationships take work, along with a desire to love through the difficult times and celebrate the good times. We know that the workaday world is filled with stress and the pressure to produce. We know that our culture places an emphasis on scarcity, negativity, and duality. In May and July, we had the opportunity to celebrate the jubilee of 8 Wheaton Franciscan Sisters and 1 Wheaton Franciscan Covenant Member cumulative years of service to God and all of God s creation. In fact, they continue to serve through active volunteering and/or through the vital gift of prayer and presence. In July, we also recognized the dedicated years of service of the associates (employees) who support the Province and Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare in Illinois. Author and retreat leader Jan Phillips writes, what is it that gives our life meaning? It s connection, community, a sense that the part we play matters to the whole. This is so beautifully lived out in the meaningful lives of our Jubilarians. Jan goes on to write, Our neighborhoods, our cities, our churches, our workplaces look like they look because we co-create them. They are made of our energy, our ideas and creations. They are what they are because of what we have done or failed to do. I know that our church, our workplace, and our world is a better place because of the creativity, love, commitment, and energy of these dedicated individuals who chose to serve God by serving more than themselves. Congratulations to all of our Jubilarians. Thank you for all of the ways that you love and serve. May God continue to bless you and bring you peace and joy!

2 Covenant Membership News CM Jeanne Connolly On June 1-3, the North American Conference of Associates and Religious (NACAR) held its biannual conference, A Journey of Blessings, in Deerfield, IL. More than 250 Associate and Sisters from dozens of congregations across North America came together to receive inspiration from keynote speaker. Joyce Rupp, and to share stories, ideas, and hope for the associate relationship with religious congregations.. Joyce described the Church as being on the threshold and in the land of don t know. Like the caterpillar chrysalis, we are in a mushy time. Painfully disoriented, we need to trust that the Holy One will lead us out of this mushy land of don t know into the graceful beauty of what is to come. I had the privilege of attending this conference, as well as the honor of presenting one of two pre-conference sessions. I also hosted a Tau Center booth providing as much Wheaton Franciscan coverage as possible. NACAR is exploring different ways of being in service to Associates and Religious congregations during these uncertain times. I encourage Covenant Members and Sisters to go to their website and to join as an individual member. The Associate movement is alive and well. It is very exciting to be a part of this growing phenomenon in our church today. Upcoming Covenant Events: On Wednesday, September 26, at 7 p.m., I will be facilitating Who are the Wheaton Franciscans. If you know anyone who is curious about the Wheaton Franciscan community or someone seeking companions on the spiritual journey, invite them to attend this information program offered through Tau Center. There is no charge, but registration is required. Rachael s Educational Fund. Virginia Ruth Pendleton Rachael Wanjiku is an orphan and lives with her older brother in Naivasha, Kenya. 3 Tau Center 2012 CM Karen Tornberg. Ramona Miller shares her reflections on the Life of St. Clare of Assisi.. Mary Ellen McAleese A friend of mine who works in Campus Ministry participated in the NUNs on the bus when it was in the Chicago area. I asked her to write a little about why she attended. (see below) I attended because I wanted to be in solidarity with women religious and the Leadership Conference of Women Religious. I think the Nuns on the bus tour, spearheaded by members of Network, is a brilliant and positive way to highlight the extraordinary work of Women Religious who serve poor and marginalized people, who are often forgotten by society and lawmakers in policy decisions. There were more than 100 people in attendance at the Friendraising event held on June 19th. We listened to stories of several religious Sisters who have been riding on the bus. The Executive Director of NETWORK, a National Catholic Social Justice lobby, was inspirational and witty in sharing how the bus tour evolved, certain that it was a Spirit-led opportunity to highlight how Religioius communities of women are serving the poor in various capacities, and the detrimental effects the recently passed Ryan budget will have on the poor.. Goretti McGlone Celebrates Name Day. Julie Walsh On July 15, 2012,. Goretti McGlone celebrated her name day on the Feast of Saint Goretti. A lovely red rose, brought to her by. Rosalie Klein, was placed on the altar at Holy Communion. When. Goretti was prayed for, she smiled and apparently was aware of the occasion. We sang to her at lunch and. Jane Petzel brought her a container of delicious chocolate chip cookies, which we all relished. As the day went on, everyone, including the personnel, was wishing. Goretti A Happy Feast Day. I think she enjoyed the day. Tau Center hosted 55 guests on Saturday, June 2, for a day with. Ramona Miller. It was a day full of learning, sharing, and personal reflection on the life of St. Clare. One attendee s comment sums up the day: I particularly enjoyed the interaction among Franciscans from other congregations. It truly was like a family reunion. Ramona was good about encouraging us to share with one another. She is an excellent presenter. 3 From left:. Glenna Czachor,. Melanie Paradis, &. Romona Miller Transforming Spiritual Wisdom: Two Days with Jan Phillips Evolutionary artist, author, workshop director and social activist Jan Phillips will be presenting two full-day programs in September. Friday, September 14, will be Visionary Leadership focusing on transforming our lives, our communities, and our world. Saturday, September 15, is Being Mystics and Prophets experience and reclaim how the Divine dwells within us and all creation. And Friday evening Jan is offering a free-will multimedia concert and presentation called Being the Light. Jan is the author of several books, including No Ordinary Time, The Art of Original Thinking, and Marry Your Muse. Plan to join us for both days and the concert if you can! Registration forms are available on the Tau Center website and on display in the Motherhouse. From. Mary Ellen McAleese I d like to extend a personal invitation to all of you reading this to consider and plan your calendar in advance for Jan Phillips, September Diane Przyborowski and I participated in a 5-day retreat by Jan at the end of August 2011 and, speaking for myself, my life will never be the same. Sharing from her own lived transformation and her relationship with her Beloved, she gently challenges one to consider the reality of being a co-creator, a prophet, an evolutionary leader, and a mystic. Hope you and others you live with or minister with come experience her for yourself. Time to Tangle! CM Veronica Ward really knows how to Tangle Zentangle, that is! While she was recently in town, Veronica offered an introductory Zentangle class through Tau Center. Twenty participants gathered in the Little Portion to learn this creative art form from Veronica, a Certified Zentangle Teacher. At its core, Zentangle is a way of creating beautiful images from repetitive patterns. We all found it fun and relaxing and several are saying they are now addicted to it! Veronica is coming back in the fall to teach another beginner s class as well as one for advanced Zentanglers so watch Tau Center announcements for the details.
