3 From the Desk of Fr. Francis Greetings of Christ s Peace and Joy! Hope you all had a blessed week. Thanks Thanks to Lucy Wong for donating two beautiful orchids for our Church altar. Thanks to members of our Prayer Garden Club for cleaning and preparing our Garden for Winter. Thanks to our School Choir for singing at Vicariate III Welcome Mass for Bishop Robert Casey on Friday, Nov. 9 th at St. Mary of the Angels Parish, and to all adults who accompanied them. Thanks to our Religious Education Program students for leading us in songs and readings and other liturgical services last Sunday. They did a great job with the song- Make Me a Channel of Your Peace. Thanksgiving John Milton, a famous 17 th England poet, wrote, Gratitude bestows reverence, allowing us to encounter everyday epiphanies, those transcendent moments of awe that change forever how we experience life and the world. As we quickly approach Thanksgiving, all of us are invited to take some time to reflect on the question of gratitude: to whom are we grateful and for what are we grateful? Gratitude helps us to appreciate everything we have in life. Without the attitude of gratitude, people can be selfcentered and can live lives that are taken things for granted. Our gratitude to God and others urges us to accept our daily crosses and to share and to give. Mother Teresa says beautifully, The best way to show your gratitude to God and people is to accept everything with joy...we may not be able to give much but we can always give the joy that springs from a heart that is in love with God. All over the world people are hungry and thirsty for God's love. We meet that hunger by spreading joy. Joy is one of the best safeguards against temptation. Speaking of Thanksgiving, I want to thank all of you for your faith, your love for our God and our Church, and your support of my ministry and of my life. With gratitude, let s joyfully accept and share the life that God has blessed us with. Peace ~ Fr. Francis

4 Renew My Church Announcement Meeting for Parishioners and School Families Thank you for your participation as we have been discerning the best church, parish and school structures to revitalize the greater ministerial vitality of our Catholic communities. Over the past several months, the Grouping Feedback and Discernment Team, which includes representatives from all of the parishes in our grouping, met to review and discern the future structure for our area. Based on their meetings and discussions, the group submitted a report to an Archdiocesan Commission, which includes representatives from across the Archdiocese. Based on the Grouping Team s feedback report, as well as other considerations, the Commission will present a recommendation to Cardinal Cupich and the Archdiocese s Presbyteral Council. A final decision from Cardinal Cupich and the Archdiocese s Presbyteral Council is expected at the end of the month. As such, we want to invite you to join us for a community meeting where all parishioners and school families from across our grouping will gather together to learn of the decision and discuss next steps for our area. Meeting Details: Wednesday, November 28, 2018, 7 p.m. St. Barbara Church, 2859 S. 7 RESPECT LIFE CORNER Create in Me a Clean Heart: A Pastoral Response to Pornography (Part 2) Users and Effects: A Closer Look Sadly, first exposure to pornography often occurs at young ages. Children may find images and videos by accident online. Many young people also produce their own pornography in the form of sexual photographs and videos shared with peers. Being exposed to pornography can be traumatic for children and youth. It gives them a distorted image of sexuality, persons, and relationships, which can then affect their behavior. Tragically, some children are forced to participate in child pornography, a crime. Parents today face increasing challenges in protecting their children's innocence and many feel ill-equipped to monitor their children's devices. Pornography use within the home has negative effects on a family's life. Mercy and Healing in Christ and Through the Church The Church is called to be a "field hospital" for the wounded of the world. No wound is out of the reach of Christ's redeeming grace. Christ is our hope! The Church proclaims the truth about love, sexuality, and the dignity of each person, and she seeks to provide the Lord's mercy and healing for those harmed by pornography. To those exploited by the pornography industry, you are beloved and cherished by God! The way you have been treated is deplorable, and we will work for justice for all enslaved men, women, and children. Come to the Lord and allow him to heal you. To those guilty of exploiting others through the production of pornography, the Lord in his justice and mercy is calling you to repentance. No sin is too great to forgive, but we exhort you to repent, make amends for the damage you have caused, and turn yourself over to civil authorities if you have been involved in criminal exploitation. To men and women who use pornography, be not afraid to approach the altar of mercy and ask for forgiveness. God is waiting to meet with joy those who repent. Counseling, spiritual direction, and accountability groups can all help you to reach freedom. Cultivating chastity takes work and is a daily choice. If you fall, seek the Lord's forgiveness in the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation. To all parents, you are the guardians of your children and should be their models for chaste love. It is your responsibility to teach your children the true meaning of sexuality and to protect them from pornography. To young people, Christ calls you to be strong, courageous witnesses of chastity and hope. Be an example for your friends of the freedom and joy that come from living a chaste life. Reject the pressure to treat sex as recreational or to objectify your body or someone else's. To pastors and other clergy, we are witnesses of the joy and freedom of chastity. Let us call the faithful to the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation and make sure it is available. We too must approach the fount of mercy if we sin in this area. Let us preach on chastity and protect children from pornography. To all people of good will, the Church is grateful to all who are working to acknowledge the harmful nature of pornography and build a culture where chastity and authentic love are esteemed and supported. 8 Parish Ministry Series - MEET OUR YOUNG ADULT LEADERSHIP TEAM 4 There are times when the Holy Spirit does really exciting things in my life and it makes me say, "Wow! Look at what the Holy Spirit is doing!" These are times when I want some friends around my age with whom I can share my excitement and comfortably talk about God and the movements happening in my spiritual life without any awkwardness or hesitation. People who can relate. I have found that I have been able to talk to friends around my age about God, but so many of them couldn't relate to me or I couldn't relate to their "I don't pray, but I can send you positive vibes" perspectives. So I end up sharing my spiritual life with anyone who shared the same Catholic faith. With the new developments in YAM, I have found the friends I have been looking for. We share the same faith, same age group, same communication styles (texting, ing, praying), same love for God and for our parish, same desire to serve and worship God, same desire to grow and be holy children of God, same care and concern for each other, and so much more. Their idea of fun and their sense of humor is closer to mine than that of my secular friends. I feel comfortable playing board games and singing karaoke with YAM on a Saturday night, yet also attend a retreat with them, share in the sacraments, and talk about God all day. St. Therese Church is my home and everyone here is my family, and I think of the YAM group like they are my brothers and sisters; growing up together in Christ. I am blessed to be a part of YAM's core group and we will be blessed if you decide to join YAM. We want our group to grow bigger, because as it is written in Luke 14:23, "Make people come in that my home may be filled." Let's fill up Jesus' house with people of every age! We have monthly events and activities that are focused on either our spiritual life, social life, or service. I'm Roberta and I have been a parishioner here for 33 years. I am always looking to meeting new people! Come talk to me anytime! My favorite beverage is Schweppes cream soda and favorite food is lasagna. I love reading the bible, praying, singing, cooking (especially for other people), and watching mukbangs and cooking shows. Also, check us out on the "YAM- St. Therese Chinese Catholic Church" Facebook Group!

Nardi Victor Roa Frank Karagianes Carole Louie Schum Felina Li GOD S Gifts to Us by Sister Caritas We come to the end of the Church year, and we look back through the year, through our lives. Here at St. Therese we had some very special things happen. We had a number of adults Baptized at Easter. Father Christian s Mother was among those baptized. Deacon Christian became Father Christian in May and we had a wonderful reception and celebration for him. We had many wonderful celebrations. We had wonderful members who participated in Renew My Church. Soon we will find out the Cardinal s decision. Recently we again celebrated that our School was chosen as Blue Ribbon School and recognized nationally. What wonderful things happened to you during this past liturgical year? We have been blest with seeing and hearing. We are able to experience the beauty of creation, the sun, moon and stars. We can see the beauty of those we love and the perfection of a new born infant. We have a home to live in and friends and family. We have a place to freely worship God and a country of great resources and freedom. All these things make us among the most blest people living on the face of the earth. Most of all at this time of year, we reflect on the many graces God has bestowed upon us. The gift of faith and baptism allows us to be Children of God with a right to the Kingdom of God. We have the gift of having God as our Father. We are all one family and members of the Church. God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit come to live in us. Jesus has given up His life and rose again so we can have the life of God in us. Our lives are filled with the graces which enable us to be like Jesus and true children of God. We are able to overcome our many faults and have our sins forgiven. We are fed with the Holy Eucharist and strength by the grace of God. Every worthwhile gift, every genuine benefit comes from above, descending from the Father of the heavenly luminaries, who cannot change and who is never shadowed over. (St. James) We have everything to be thankful for in our lives.
