3 From the Desk of Fr. Francis Greetings of Christ s Peace and Joy! Hope you all had a blessed week. Thanks Thanks to all who participated in the Youth Gathering on Feb. 3rd, and to Ellen and Nick Andriacchi and all adults for leading and accompanying them. Thanks to George Lee for taking the lead on the annual Super Duper Bowl Party, to all who bought squares and to all who helped with the party, especially Pat Culen, Nick and Ellen Andriacchi, Florence Yu, Gemma Wong, Teresa Moy Wendy Sin, Jade Yee, Renee Fong, and Nicole Lee for preparing the food and Joe Delfin for the audio and visual setup. Congratulations to all winners! We will have a report in next weekend s bulletin. Return Wholeheartedly to the Lord In his Lenten message, Pope Francis calls all to return to the Lord in every aspect of our daily life. He reminds us the dangers of false prophets and of allowing our hearts becoming cold. In order to confound our heart, the Holy Father reminds us that the Church proposes a soothing remedy, namely of prayer, almsgiving and fasting. Prayer allows us to eradicate secret lies and self-deception, and we find the consolation God offers, he says. Almsgiving frees us from greed; it helps us regard others as brothers and sisters. How I would like almsgiving to become a genuine style of life for each of us! he says. Fasting weakens our tendency to violence reviving our desire to obey God, who alone can satisfy our hunger. Pope Francis concludes his message by inviting to center our lives on the Eucharist and make our hearts more ardent in faith, hope and love. 5 2017 Tax Letter for Church Donations If you would like to have a 2017 donation letter for tax purposes, please contact the parish office. Lenten Regulations Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. The special Paschal fast, as well as abstinence, are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday. Ash Wednesday announcement from Archdiocese This year, the largely secular celebration of Valentine's Day (Feb. 14th) coincides with Ash Wednesday and some have inquired if a dispensation from the obligations to fast and abstain from meat will be given. Catholics throughout the world recognize Ash Wednesday as the solemn beginning of a period of prayerful reflection and penance, as is evident by the large number of churchgoers on this day. In view of the significance of Ash Wednesday, the obligation of fast and abstinence must naturally be the priority in the Catholic community. Valentine's Day can appropriately be celebrated the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, which also happens to be Mardi Gras, a traditionally festive time before beginning our Lenten observance. Youth Ministry Update Due to CNY there will be NO YOUTH Ministry meeting on Saturday, March 3rd. Instead, youth are encouraged to help out with Church cleanings on Feb. 17 from 9:30 to 11:30 and Feb. 24 from 10:30 to 12 p.m. The next youth ministry gathering at CHURCH will be on Saturday, April 7th for a PRAISE AND WORSHIP concert with Fr. News and Events Volunteers are needed to help in decorating the church after the 10:30am mass and next Saturday, February 24th at 9:30am. A light breakfast will be served. The ACA theme, Come, Follow Me was selected to remind us to continue to answer Jesus call to follow Him in thought, word and deed by providing the necessary contribution to fund ministries and services to share God s love with many others in our Parish and our Archdiocese. Each pledge makes a difference because all Parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services. The goal for our parish is $9, % of the additional funds received will be returned to us for use in our Parish. Our rebate fund will help us to continue to maintain and beautify our Church. Nardi Victor Roa Frank Karagianes Kim D Amico Gyna Gazzi ASH WEDNESDAY LOVE S RESPONSE ~Sister Caritas Wednesday of this week is Ash Wednesday, the start of the holy season of Lent. Lent is the established period of forty six days before Easter. This season dates back to the early Church. Why do we use Ashes, (burnt palms) to signify the start of the season? If you look in the Old Testament several stories speak of people sprinkling themselves with ashes as a sign of willingness to change. The king and people of Nineveh changed their lives and actions and sat in ashes as a sign of their willingness to change their lives and hearts at the preaching of Jonah. We are being asked to accept the ashes in the form of the sign of the cross, reminding us that we will die and need to change our lives now since we do not know when our lives will end. We want to be open, holy and united to God at our death. As Catholics we are called to fast and abstain during Lent. We are asked to fast on Ash Wednesday (which this year is Valentine s Day) days during Lent and on Good Friday. We are called to not eat meat on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays in Lent. These actions are ways to strengthen our control of ourselves, to do a little something physical and to unite ourselves to Jesus and His sufferings. Check the bulletin and parish website for more details. The call of Lent is to give to God those things which are keeping us away from Him. We are called to change those actions, thoughts or ways of being in our everyday lives, at work, at home or in our interior selves which make us less like Jesus, make us less of a holy person or hurt our personal relationship. Another way is to look at what else we can do to act more like Jesus. We can reach out to others. We can be more kind, more evangelizing. We can take more time to volunteer or help others. We can be more patient with others especially in our family. These next few days reflect on your life and see what it is that you can do to become a person closer to God, more like Jesus, more open to God s grace and actions in your life. Pray more. Come to daily Mass. Come to the Stations of the Cross on Fridays. Participate in parish life and especially parish meetings. Invite others in our Chinatown community to come and be part of some of the activities and events here at St. Therese. Invite people to our celebration of Chinese New Year, retreats or spiritual events. All are welcome. No one is excluded. Be the bridge for someone decides to become Catholic. Many people are seeking a welcoming place, a welcoming face, a welcoming place to feel at home. Do all these things for love. Act out of Love of God and loves of others. What are you going to do for Lent?
