1 June 2011Vol. XXI, No. 6 A community of Spirit. A fellowship of Joy! 325 SW 6th Avenue, Milton-Freewater, OR th Anniversary The 50th Anniversary Committee has been meeting the past months and plans are well on the way for this event. You should be receiving the official invitation and week-end schedule of events, along with the reservation form in the first week of June. There have been several fund raisers planned to help with the cost of this event, mostly in place of coffee hour after worship. May 22nd there was a potato bar which brought in $260. The next event is planned on June 26th in place of coffee hour. We will have a BBQ Hamburgers in the parking lot of the church. Until we see the response of the first two events, July has not been planned. In August during Muddy Frogwater Tina Kain will head up a bingo station for our final fund raiser. This is an exciting time in the life of the church. Come and join in the celebration!
2 Pastor s Pitch June 2011 Vol. XXI, No. 6 Page 2 Over the past few years, we have been steadily gaining in our appreciation of the element of joy in worship, and especially in the Lord s Supper. The appropriate mood for a meal is, of course, joy and gladness and gratitude. A family whose relationships with each other are open and honest look forward to gathering together for the family meal. Then, it is always good to be together again as a family at the beginning and end of the day. So it is with the Lord s Supper. What a magnificent and precious and holy and lovely meal it is. Gordon Huesby January 9, 1972 The above was taken from the History of the Congregation that was collected for the Twentieth Anniversary, I suppose that is was taken from the Pastors report of the Annual meeting that was held that year, and I thought that maybe if we take a look at who we were we can also see where we are going. It is no surprise to me that Joy and worship have been a long standing tradition in this congregation. You can also see that Holy Communion or The Lord s Supper have also played an important part in worship. No doubt you have noticed that over the years the Lord s Supper being celebrated in worship has increased to almost every worship service and on a weekly basis. There have been changes in thought when it comes to the Lord s Supper, now we see children coming to commune, when at one time only those who were confirmed were invited. Once, the Lord s Supper was only celebrated on a quarterly basis or maybe once or twice a month. Once we always went to the rail and now we only come to the end of the aisle. Why all the changes? Well, first of all, there is not a strict blueprint for celebrating the Lord s Supper, only the admonition that we should do this in remembrance of me, said Jesus. The Early Church celebrated a whole meal together, and it was right in the middle of the worship gathering. Everyone was welcome, all who believed in Jesus as the Christ and who is our messiah who died for our sins, there was no distinction between the ages, or gender, or leader or follower, there was only together for the meal. Because of Jesus telling us to continue to do this in his name, and because of the physical elements of food and drink, the universal church adopted this meal as a sacrament of the church. Nowadays we gather together and invite all who believe in Jesus to come forward and share this meal together as well. Like I stated earlier, there are no rules set in stone, only understandings that form a wide range of thinking about the Supper. Because of this wide range within the ELCA it comes down to each congregation and pastor to decide the particulars of celebrating the Supper. So we have changes over the years, intinction is used to move the service along in a timely manor, we celebrate each week so that those who are not here do not feel excluded from the community, and we invite children who have received instruction to come forward and take their rightful place along side the rest of us believers. We make changes, but we always do so in remembrance of Him who died for us, who offers his blood and body for us, who invites us to be with him in this magnificent, and precious and holy and lovely meal. Pastor JJ

Thanks to Art & Jennifer Pease, Leslie Pease and Mike Miller who completed the nearly 5 mile course to raise money and awareness to fight local and global hunger! We should have a final tally on what was raised by the end of June. Thanks also to Michelle Miller, Deb Browns and John Batalis for helping with registration and logistics for this event! Every year the Crop Walk receives support from community businesses that make this effort possible. Please take the time to thank the following businesses for their support; Brown & Sons, Doug's Septic Service, Safeway, Helpful Hands 4-H Club and the City of Milton-Freewater. Sunday School has drawn to an end this year, and I would like to thank the Team that made each week so much fun. In our elementary class Theresa Krumbah, Karen Shelton, Kelly Neil, and Sarah Ensunsa dedicated many hours of preparation and time into each lesson. These teachers helped to incorporate a new curriculum that reached the kids through games, crafts, videos, and even cooking in the kitchen. Thank you very much for your time and service. We also had a change in the older kids as they had their very own class and curriculum. Gina Miller and Jon Alexander helped to guide those between 5 th grade to 12 th grade through basic teachings of the church and helped to show the kids what a life of faith is like. Hopefully you know the impact that you have had on our youth!
