1 THE REPORTER Mark your calendars Kick Off Sunday is September 9! On September 9, we will return to our normal Sunday schedule, worship will be at 8:15 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. with Sunday school starting at 9:20 a.m. This year s Sunday school theme is Camping Out In God s Word. To help us do this we are using a new curriculum called Whirl Lectionary where every lesson will coincide with the scripture readings in worship. Our Sunday school children will hear the same message in church, through the Children s Message and Sermon, and together in class. T-shirts with the theme will be given to students and teachers on September 9, the first day of Sunday school. Students and teachers will begin every Sunday morning at 9:20 in the sanctuary with large group time. Each week we will open Sunday school with fun music, a video, and an introduction to the day s lesson. We are also adding a few new things this year including children s bulletins, and G.I.F.T. Sundays. Growing In Faith Together Sundays will happen about once a month for EVERYONE of ALL ages to participate from 9:20-10:20 am. There will be NO Sunday school classes on GIFT Sundays. Instead students, parents, and all ages are invited to learn more about that day s scripture lessons and Grow In Faith Together. Our first G.I.F.T. Sunday will be October 14th. This school year, confirmation will look a little different from how it was last year. We will be going to back to a large and small group format. We will all meet together for a meal around 5:40 p.m. then gather together in the Family Life Center for large group time (both 7th & 8th grade students) at 6:00 p.m. then break out into small group time lead by adult leaders. This format will help cultivate relationships between students and adults as well as give us more time together for both fun and learning! We will also be adding in some fun fellowship and retreat options on selected weekends. Continued on next page

2 Continued from front ifaith, a high energy ministry for 4-6th grade students, will be happening more often this year! It will generally meet the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month starting September 19th from 4:00-5:00 p.m. in the Family Life Center at West Nidaros. Baltic and Tri Valley buses can drop students off at church! We ll have fun games, yummy snacks, and a short bible lesson! As of mid-august, each Sunday school class has two teachers for grades preschool through 6th grade! Even though we have all of our lead teachers, we would like to invite YOU to be part of our Sunday school. You wouldn t have to prepare anything, teach anything, or know all the right answers just come and be part of one of the classes. Sit in on your child s, grandchild s, or neighbor s class and see what it s about or help out in other ways. Please talk to Jessi about how you can be involved and get to know our amazing students! It s going to be a faith-filled school year at West Nidaros! 150th Nidaros Worship Worship in the Park w/benton Lutheran North Wall Work Grace and peace to you from God the Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. This summer has been a busy one that I will not soon forget. I cannot thank enough the people who were involved in and helped put together the 150th Nidaros Worship service and all that went along with it. What a great way to celebrate our history, by coming together as a Nidaros community to hear God s promise anew. To follow up the 150th anniversary service with a joint worship service in the park with Benton Lutheran was awesome. In addition, this summer we introduced a new liturgy into worship with Now the Feast, after hearing the positive feedback we are planning to have it be a part of our worship rotation throughout the year. To top it all off, the capital projects are now underway, the north basement wall has been dug and sealed. We have a new system to move the water away from the building, and the siding and shingles are being replaced. It has been a productive summer at West Nidaros, one that we can put in the history books as we begin a new programming year. Blessings to you all. In Christ, Pr. Jared Rakness

4 Generosity & Missions Operation Christmas Child lvin Chicas was among more than 100 children who prayed to receive Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior during an Operation Christmas Child shoebox distribution event in Honduras. Melvin and the other children then participated in The Greatest Journey, when they learned more about God and the Bible during the 12-lesson discipleship program. All the children were excited to receive their certificate and a New Testament during the Greatest Journey graduation ceremony, said Andy Castillo, a missionary in Honduras whose church handed out the shoeboxes. For many of them, this is the first Bible they have owned. Melvin, 13, read through the entire New Testament in the months that followed his graduation from The Greatest Journey. He began telling his friends and family about Jesus, and a number of his relatives have also prayed to receive Jesus as their Savior. Melvin, along with his mother and grandmother and other family members, now attend Andy s church on Sunday mornings. Melvin also attends Awana meetings and serves with the church s children s ministry. Melvin is now involved with the church s educational program and is a studious participant. The program provides education at a low cost for students in grades 7 and up who would otherwise likely not continue in school due to financial strains. I have been impressed to see Melvin s passion for serving Christ he was completely transformed by the power of the Gospel, Andy said. We praise God for what He continues to do in Melvin s life. He is continually proclaiming the Gospel to everyone he meets. You have an opportunity to Share Christ s Love With All this fall by helping to fill 10 shoeboxes with items to bless children in need. Reaching children who rarely receive gifts and do not know the gift of salvation & the love of Jesus is something we can do in our congregation. With a grant from our Endowment Committee to cover the expense of shipping we are asking for you to fill the boxes with hygeine items, school necessities and fun toys and games. A list of acceptable items will be available. Reaching our children in todays world with the love of Christ is one of the best ways to bring peace, tolerance and love into the world of tomorrow and eternity with God. The collection week is in November so we will have our boxes available to fill in October. Lists of acceptable items will be available. If you have any questions please call Cindy Johnson or any member of the Evangelism & Missions KMA. Thank you St. Dysmas Visit The Evangelism and Missions Committee invites our members to worship at St. Dysmas, our congregation in the SD Penitentiary, on Thursday, September 27, 2018, at 6 p.m. You remember our visit from Rev. Wayne Gallipo speaking about the gift of our fellowship. You will need to complete a short security clearance form by September 9 if you plan to attend. Forms are available on the church website or in the church office. "I was in prison and you came to me." Matthew 25:36
