3 Page 3 Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 22, 2017 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Pastor s Desk As part of our parish s Respect Life activities, we are hosting a very timely presentation today, Sunday, October 22nd, at 2pm in the Parish Life Center basement, about the current situation in New Jersey concerning Assisted Suicide. This is becoming an even more challenging issue as insurance carriers are trying to convince people that a cheaper solution to health care is more important than the life and well-being of a terminally ill or elderly person. This is information that everyone should want to know. I thank our Parish Respect Life Committee and the Respect Life Director of the Diocese of Metuchen who have put together this informative presentation. +++ Perhaps you ve noticed the word Welcome on the cover of the last few bulletins. This is the result of one suggestion from our Be My Witnesses Implementation Team, as a message for new or returning parishioners. Even better is to have parishioners extend a greeting to new families when they see them. This can be done as people enter or leave the church, either informally or as a member of a Greeting ministry we would like to revitalize. If you think you would like to join this ministry and be stationed at one of our church doors before the Mass you usually attend, please contact Joe McHale at Reflection on Today s Readings Rev. Msgr. Richard J. Arnhols, Pastor The motivation of the Pharisees and the Herodians in questioning Jesus about the legality of paying taxes to Caesar was quickly exposed by Jesus response: Render therefore to Caesar the things that are the Caesar s, and to God the things that are God s. As citizens of the empire, they owed the emperor allegiance but, first and foremost, they owed God allegiance, for there is no authority except from God. As adopted children of our heavenly Father, we are citizens of a heavenly kingdom. We are called and chosen to be a holy people, set apart for God s praise and glory. The Father wants us to share His divine life now as well as in eternity, to develop an intimacy of relationship with Him, speaking with Him in prayer and hearing from Him through His Word. We are gifted with the high dignity of being made in God s image and likeness. We have received a privileged citizenship and, with it, a call to extend God s kingdom on earth. This is why, even as a people set apart, we need to see the importance of public affairs. The Fathers of the Second Vatican Council taught: The Church regards as worthy of praise and consideration the work of those who, as a service to others, dedicate themselves to the welfare of the state and undertake the burdens of this task (On the Church in the Modern World, 75). Followers of Christ are called to bring an authentic Christian voice to governmental and political affairs. The Christian life is not set in opposition to civil life. As a result of our first parents decision to usurp God s authority, obedience to authority, whatever its nature, goes against our desire for independence. Even so, Jesus died that all people might acknowledge God s authority in their lives. By appropriating His power and that of His Cross, the desires of our fallen nature can be overcome; by our witness of obedience, God s kingdom can come and reign among us. God s plan for our lives far exceeds our imaginings. His plan includes obedience to the laws of governing authorities and God s plan will not be thwarted. The prophet Isaiah recognized Cyrus of Persia as God s instrument for fulfilling His plan for the Jews to be returned from exile in Babylon to restore Jerusalem and its temple. Let us pray that our minds be penetrated by the light of the Holy Spirit so that we may recognize and respond to God s plan for us. Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure! Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar s and to God the things that are God s. - Matthew Everything we are and everything we have belongs to God. We aren t owners of anything, we are merely stewards of the gifts God has given each of us. All God is asking is that we give back a portion of what He gave us. This is the essence of Stewardship. God should be our first priority in everything. All else comes second. Sign up sheet is available at the church main entrance. Weekly Adoration, Thursdays, 7:30am to 6:30pm, in the Reservation Chapel room behind the tabernacle. Enter from ramp entrance. Sacraments Penance - Monday-Friday: 7:00pm-7:20pm. Saturday: 1:00pm-2:00pm and immediately following the 5:30pm Mass or by appointment with a priest at any time. Baptisms are normally held the 2nd and 3rd Sunday of each month at 1:30pm.* Instructions for parents are normally held the 1st Sunday of each month at 1:30pm in the basement of the Parish Life Center. These instructions are required of parents having their first child Baptized. All parents must be registered parishioners and present child s birth certificate at the time of arranging for the baptism. Godparents must be practicing Catholics, at least sixteen years of age, who have received the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist, and, if married, the Sacrament of Matrimony. Sponsor certificate must be presented at least one week before Baptism. PLEASE NOTE! We are accepting registrations for Baptisms for November and beyond. Please call the Rectory at for information. 6 Page 6 Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 22, 2017 Fire Safety Assembly This year, over 50 students in grades K-5 entered the Bergenfield Fire Department s Fire Safety Poster Contest. On Thursday, October 12, Bergenfield Fireman and Transfiguration Academy parent Kevin Cook led an assembly to review fire safety tips and presented awards to the winners of the contest. In addition to all of the Transfiguration Academy winners, a second grader Fiona Castaneda was a town-wide winner. Fiona will receive a ride to school on the fire truck and be honored at an upcoming Bergenfield Council meeting.
