Thursday, June 14, 2018 American Flag Day Commemorates the adoption of the the flag of the United States, which happened on that day in 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. The day was once honored by its own parades with Old Glory, but this has since become overshadowed by Memorial Day. Nonetheless, it is an appropriate day to fly the flag and give thanks to God for the gift of our country, still striving to proclaim liberty and justice for all. The flag. which we honor and under which we serve, is the emblem of our unity, our power, our thought and purpose as a nation. It has no other character than that which we give it from generation to generation ~ Woodrow Wilson. Used and worn out flags should never be simply discarded in the trash, but should be properly retired, burned in a prescribed ceremony. St. John s Boy Scout Troop 139 regularly performs this ritual. 3 Page 3 Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 10, 2018 Pastor s Desk Dear Parishioners, Today, the Corona Self-Help Group is making its annual visit to our parish, to request your support of their detox programs and to answer any questions you may have about how to assist people who are addicted to drugs or alcohol. Our Women s Cornerstone retreat weekend is next Friday night and Saturday. There is still some room if you would like to register today or tomorrow. Forms are available at the exits of the church. This is a truly spiritually rewarding experience! This past Friday and Saturday were the feasts of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. A parish family is donating this pair of statues to be added to our Marian Grotto, to join the statues of St. Francis of Assisi and St. Padre Pio that are already there, along with the original Marian statue from the days of St. John s Convent. I am pleased to see that the grotto is being used for a variety of group and private prayer experiences. A new memorial brick order will soon be placed. Forms are available in the rectory if you would like to reserve a brick in the grotto. I am happy to tell you that Cardinal Tobin has granted my request to be relieved of my chancery position as Vicar for Pastoral Life, effective June 30th. After more than 15 years, I believed it was time to pass the torch to my associate, Fr. John Gordon. This should give me more time to be attentive to the needs of our parish, which I intend to continue serving for the next five years! Rev. Msgr. Richard J. Arnhols, Pastor Reflection on Today s Scripture Readings Each of us yearns for the healing touch of God. The long-ago moment when our first parents disobeyed God and lost His grace is somehow incorporated into the memory of each passing generation. Thus, we all cry out: Who will save us? The people of Jesus time demonstrated this yearning as crowds from Galilee...from Judea and Jerusalem and Idumea and from beyond the Jordan, and from about Tyre and Sidon all followed Jesus. As the scribes and Pharisees watched Jesus heal and deliver the multitudes, they became angry. Perhaps they felt that their positions of respect and honor were threatened by this miracle worker. Acting out of jealousy, they tried to discredit Jesus, claiming that it was by Satan s power that He cast out demons. Jesus responded with a parable: How can Satan cast out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. He was not in league with Satan. Quite the contrary Jesus was demonstrating His power over the evil one. Genesis depicts God promising that the serpent would be defeated by the woman s offspring. This first announcement of the gospel promised that though the struggle between good and evil would be great, Satan, the evil one, would ultimately be defeated by one like us. Jesus Christ, fully God and fully man, is the fulfillment of this promise. By His cross, He has taken away the devil s legal right to harass us and rob us of our dignity as children of God. How can we experience the fruits of this victory? Through faith. In moments of temptation and doubt, we can pray with the psalmist, I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in His word I hope. We can humbly confess our weakness and ask the Spirit of God to fill us with His strength. As we learn to wait for the Lord, we too will know healing and freedom. Lord Jesus, by Your cross, You opened the way for us to know freedom. Teach us to trust in Your victory over the devil. Empower us to live by faith in You, waiting for the victory You have promised. Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure! And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. - Mark 3: 25 Do our parish ministries complement each other or do they compete against each other? Is our parish one Body of Christ or a bunch of little, separate ministries controlled by human ego? The goal of all parish ministries is to bring people to Christ. All of our parish work should be for the glory of God s name, not our own name. Saturday: 1:00pm -2:00pm and immediately following the 5:30pm Mass upon request, or by appointment with a priest at any time. Baptisms are normally held the 2nd and 3rd Sunday of each month at 1:30pm.* Instructions for parents are normally held the 1st Sunday of each month at 1:30pm in the basement of the Parish Life Center. These instructions are required of parents having their first child Baptized. All parents must be registered parishioners and present child s birth certificate at the time of arranging for the baptism. Godparents must be practicing Catholics, at least sixteen years of age, who have received the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist, and, if married, the Sacrament of Matrimony. Help For New Moms Birthright of Bergen County, a crisis pregnancy center dedicated to encouraging and helping women choose life for their babies, is in need of volunteers to share their time and love for God s miracle of life. 6 Page 6 Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 10, 2018 Transfiguration Academy was unity without uniformity and diversity without division. For the next few weeks, we are going to share some of the comments submitted by the Middle States Accreditation Team which visited our academy earlier this academic year. We were also impressed with the unity of the school in the midst of a very diverse population. I mentioned to several groups that what I felt at Transfiguration Academy was unity without uniformity and diversity without division. The school lives God s dream of unity while recognizing the rich diverse cultures and traditions around us. One parent described the International Night as a 600 member family gathering and the best POT- luck going!
