The day was once honored by its own parades with Old Glory, but this has since become overshadowed by Memorial Day. Nonetheless, it is an especially appropriate day to fly the flag and thank God for the gift of our country, still striving to proclaim liberty and justice for all. Used and worn out flags should never be simply discarded in the trash, but should be properly burned in a prescribed ceremony. Our Boy Scout Troop 139 regularly performs this ritual. Please leave your used or worn out flags in the receptacle in the front entrance vestibule of the Rectory. 3 Page 3 The Most Holy Body & Blood of Christ June 18, 2017 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Pastor s Desk As noted on page 2, this Wednesday marks the 35th Anniversary of our parish s Novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Countless favors have been granted and souls deepened in their love of God and the Blessed Mother through this devotion. Arnhols, Pastor Reflection on Today s Readings As Jesus taught the people about the bread of life, He told them that He Himself was the life-giving bread sent from the Father. In this final portion of His teaching, He challenged those who came to Him: the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is My flesh. In response to the Jews disputes over these words, Jesus simply repeated: Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink His blood, you have no life in you; he who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life. To John s original readers, the constant litany - eat, drink, flesh, blood - would have resonated with the same sacramental overtones that they hold for us, turning their thoughts toward the Eucharist. In the sacrament of the Eucharist, we are connected with the one atoning sacrifice by which Jesus offered Himself for the life of the world. Every time we celebrate this mystery, that same sacrifice is somehow made present to us. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the Eucharist is a memorial in the biblical sense of the word: not merely the recollection of past events but the proclamation of the mighty works wrought by God for men. In the liturgical celebration of these events, they become in a certain way present and real. The Eucharist is not just a reminder; It is a real sacrifice and a real gift. In the Eucharist, Christ gives us the very body which He gave up for us on the cross. Whenever we celebrate the Mass, we participate in a representation of Jesus death and resurrection. When we receive Jesus with a disposition of faith and love, we enter into those actual events of His life-giving sacrifice. We not only receive bread and wine or flesh and blood, for that matter. We receive salvation. Let us rejoice that Jesus has given this gift to all generations until He returns in glory. Lord Jesus, thank you for Your sacrifice on the cross and Your resurrection to new life. Thank You for making that redemption present whenever we celebrate the Eucharist. We humbly accept Your presence among us, and we trust in Your great promise that whoever eats Your body and drinks Your blood abides in You. Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure! Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread. I Cor. 10: 17 As disciples of Jesus, we are called to lead holy lives and invite others to join us. Living a stewardship lifestyle, being grateful and generous with our gifts, serves a twofold purpose. One, it helps build God s kingdom here on earth. Two, it is a road map to Heaven. Sign up sheet is available at the front entrance of the main church. Please Note: Eucharistic Adoration ~ Every Thursday Will take place in the Adoration Room located on the ramp side entrance of the main church, from 7:30am to 6:45pm. Sacraments Penance - Monday-Friday: 7:00pm-7:20pm. Saturday: 1:00pm -2:00pm and immediately following the 5:30pm Mass or by appointment with a priest at any time. Baptisms are normally held the 2nd and 3rd Sunday of each month at 1:30pm.* Instructions for parents are normally held the 1st Sunday of each month at 1:30pm in the basement of the Parish Life Center. These instructions are required of parents having their first child Baptized. All parents must be registered parishioners and present child s birth certificate at the time of arranging for the baptism. Godparents must be practicing Catholics, at least sixteen years of age, who have received the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist, and, if married, the Sacrament of Matrimony. Sponsor certificate must be presented at least one week before Baptism. PLEASE NOTE! We are accepting registrations for Baptisms for July and beyond. Please call the Rectory at for information. Matrimony - Arrangements for a wedding should be made at least one year in advance. Couples are required to attend Pre- Cana and God s Plan.
