1 B E R I T A T A C OCTOBER e - bulletin 2 TAMIL ANNUAL CONFERENCE METHODIST CHURCH IN MALAYSIA Seek God s Glory E-Bulletin Volume Two By Board on Publication Inside This Issue Volume Two Pg. No. Welcome to the second electronic bulletin of the Berita TAC. We hope you enjoyed the first edition. Some of you sent us your feedback which we appreciate very much. Dear Readers, As I look back on the past 9 months that have gone by this year, I have much to thank the Lord for. We can express our gratitude to God by giving thanks to Him. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, Be joyful always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God s will for you in Christ Jesus. NIV In his commentary on the above verses, John Wesley writes, Thanksgiving is inseparable from true prayer; it is almost essentially connected with it. Giving thanks is as essential to our spiritual growth as prayer, which we are called to do continually. Friends, to put it in a nutshell we can show our thanks or gratitude only by GIVING. That s why we call it THANKS-GIVING. Following are some suggestions which you can practice during this month (Thanksgiving Sunday falls on 14 th October in our TAC Calendar); 1. Give a BIG THANKS-GIVING offering to God for all his blessings. 2. Treat your parents to a sumptuous THANKS- GIVING dinner or a THANKS-GIVING treat-box (filled with memories, mementos that remind them of all the wonderful times together). Editor s corner: Thanksgiving Message 1 President s message 3 Get to know the BOP Chairman Part 2 4 The departure and return of the glory of God in 6 Ezekiel s Vision: Implications on TAC s vision to seek God s glory Part 2 TMC Seremban Mission cum Medical Camp Trip 10 Mission Trip to Sepulut - Sabah 12 TAC Laity Convention 13 Talk on Gospel and Pluralism 18 Book Review / Laity Sunday 20 I have one chorus (sing in a Western fast beat, snapping your fingers together, if you know how): We wanna thank You (2x), We wanna thank You for the good good food (2x), We wanna thank You. 4. Give a THANKS-GIVING love letter or card to your life partner. 5. Finally, don t forget to get together as a family to say a special THANKS-GIVING prayer. Friends, always maintain an ATTITUDE of GRATITUDE. Till we meet again somewhere, someplace. With a heart of gratitude & THANKSGIVING, Jacob Korinthiar 3. Request your children to come up with sing-a-long THANKS-GIVING choruses or THANKS-GIVING poems which you can read before family prayer time or dinner time.

Dear Friends, It is indeed good to reach you through this thanksgiving e-bulletin issue. God desires that we develop ourselves to become thankful in all circumstances: (Philippians 4:6) Very often we are only thankful when things work-out the way we want and instead of thanking God at all times; we sulk and gripe when things don't happen our way. This is actually a sign of immaturity. When we behave like children by throwing tantrums and react in a selfish way, it only shows that we are unable to submit to the bigger picture that God has for us. Whatever you may be going through now, humble yourself and ask God to give you the needed patience. Only then we will be able to develop spiritual maturity in our lives. It is only thanksgiving during adversity that will enable us to remove bitterness and any hidden anger towards God for not giving what we want, when we want it. May God continue to teach us and bless us with an attitude of continual thanksgiving. In His Grace, Rev. 4 Page 4 Getting to Know the BOP Chairman, Bro. PP. Abraham Part 2 Q: What is your top priority these days? My top priority these days is to glorify our Lord Jesus in all that I do. This is my desire for the remaining part of my life. I want to do His will and please Him in all that He entrusts to me. Q: How do you think our lay people or the congregation at large can be more effective for the Lord? Be sure to guard and maintain the personal commitment made unto the Lord. Move on according to the Word of God rather than listening to the opinion or experiences of people. Get the counsel of God fearing servants of God. Q: What is your role as the BOP Chairman? My role as the BOP Chairman is to coordinate the publishing of Berita TAC-three issues a year. Frankly speaking, I am not well versed in the area of publication. However, I asked our Lord to grant me a working team to fulfil the tasks entrusted. By God s grace, thus far, I delegate and empower all those who come voluntarily to serve under the Board on Publication. I am also planning to groom and disciple more young people to take up and contribute creatively towards our publication so that our congregations would benefit from it. Q: What is your expectation from our readers? Our readers should get hold of a copy of every issue released and read it. They should also give feedback and share with those who have not got a chance to read Berita TAC. Besides that, they should also come forward to contribute articles deemed beneficial to our Conference as a whole. Q: We heard you will be retiring at the end of this year from your current job at ILSAS, Uniten. How are you preparing for it? Can you share with us your future plans? Well, after serving the LLN / TNB for 41 years, I am retiring at the end of November I am very satisfied with my long service in the organization where God had placed me. As the days of retirement draw near, I am taking time to reflect, evaluate and seek God s direction in my life. For 2018, I am just praying and seeking God s will and direction and meditating on God s Word. I am also getting counsel from some senior Pastors. Besides that, due to some of my certification at work place, they (the organization) have requested me to be their SME (Subject Matter Expert) to conduct courses whenever required. So I am surveying options as well as getting myself equipped with the necessary qualification and endorsed certification. As my heart s desire is to serve our Living Lord Jesus, I am also open to serving TAC in any capacity that is made available to me. Thus far, the strong feeling in my heart is to serve as a Pastor while working (meaning on a part time basis).nevertheless, I am open to whatever assignment our TAC President has in mind for me. Let God s Will be done in and through my life. All Praise and Glory be to our Lord Jesus Christ alone. Dear Bro. PP Abraham, Wishing you all the best in your future undertakings and thanks a bundle for your frank and straightforward answers. My heart s desire is to serve our Living Lord Jesus, to serve as a Pastor.

6 fpilf; Page 6 THE DEPARTURE AND RETURN OF THE GLORY OF GOD IN EZEKIEL S VISION: IMPLICATIONS ON TAC S VISION TO SEEK GOD S GLORY Ezekiel 9:3-11; 10:18-19; 11:22-23; 43:1-5 PART 2 - THE IMPLICATIONS: I. HUMBLE BEGINNINGS: It was in the late sixties when a few saints knelt and prayed on the sea shore of the Methodist Centre in Port Dickson, seeking for direction, consolidation, organization and future of the Tamil work in the Methodist Church in Malaysia. God s favour rested upon them and also on like-minded leaders, leading to the birth of the Tamil Provisional Annual Conference (TPAC) in 1968 and the formation of the Tamil Annual Conference (TAC) in It had been the dream and aspiration of burdened and committed leaders. With limited personnel and resources, it was an indication of God s presence and guidance in systematic governance and ministry extensions amongst the Tamils in the country. Outreach ministries were vehement and bold both the few clergy and laity were focused on reaching out. Evangelistic and Social mandate worked hand in hand. It was also a period especially in the seventies where young people responded to full time ministry and were sent to India and trained rigorously. They became prominent leaders of the Conference, displaying quality leadership character and wisdom. There was constant growth. Salaries for pastors were low but the challenge and vision to establish God s kingdom in the lives of people was an exhilarating challenge for both the clergy and laity. II. ROLE OF PRESIDENTS: Different Presidents, in their tenure of office, had different emphasis in their leadership, ranging from reaching out, effective administration, prayer camps, pastoral, fund raising, recruitment for ministry, worship, visitation, counselling and mentoring. Conference Sessions in the earlier days, were often hot and fiery. Delegates either needed satisfactory clarifications or championing the cause of Conference management, or if I may say, displaying their eloquence. Then there was this argument, why English when we are a Tamil Conference? Uneasiness caused by this ruckus had often created doubts whether God s presence was with us, though hours of prayer had been put through. Agreed that Conference Sessions were basically business in nature there seemed to be a lack of applying spiritual principles in the endeavour. Was God s presence there during decision-making processes or conducting elections when campaigning for favourite candidates was a hidden yet open norm? Even in the election of Presidents, where seems to be God s presence when the process was long-winded, especially between two incumbent candidates? Was the head of the Conference elected through Discipline procedures or the unseen hand of God in the process? Did God s glory leave the Conference at moments like these? Incidentally, it is crucial to gauge God s presence in all election processes across the board. Subsequently, our Conference has matured. Sessions are more peaceful and diplomatic, and indication of God s overruling presence. III. PLANS, GOALS AND VISION: Over the years there have been many projects and visions (doubling the membership of the Conference, liberal use of Indian preachers, Nehemiah Project etc.). Some of them did not achieve the desired results. Why were the goals not met? Was the will of God sought consciously and clearly? What post mortems were done? What lessons learnt? In Acts 2, The early church waited upon God for direction and purpose. Did we wait enough before the Lord? This is not to criticise or ridicule, for, as a Conference member, I stand equally before the charge. It is pertinent for our Conference to have visions and goals, trickling down to the grassroots. So to say, a Conference without a vision is paralysed. Apart from prayer, strategy, resource etc. how do we invoke the presence of God in our plans and vision to materialize? Employing prayer emphasis, committed involvement and move as the Spirit of God leads, are good strategies of our Conference to visualize and materialize goals and visions.

7 Page 7 IV. PASTORS APPOINTMENTS: It has always been a struggle and wrestling with God in the appointment of pastors to churches. Ordination is a clear call to pastoral ministry (perhaps debatable to some). An ordained minister is subject to the itinerant ministry. We have had cases of pastors leaving the Conference because of the refusal to take appointments in other churches, with their own valid reasons: difficulty in getting transfers for working wives, other forms of ministry, resignation due to misconduct to name a few. (Notably some who left are doing well, while others are reaping the cost). To acknowledge God s presence during the ordination and taking the vows to serve is one thing but how do we explain God s provision for them to leave the Godordained establishment? Again, it is debatable. There is a current shortage of pastors to cover the 54 churches in our Conference. It is our prayer that young people with a genuine call of God will respond, as categorically, pastors are getting retired. There needs to be a recurrence of the move of the Spirit of God as in the seventies! To that effect, meticulous and prayerful recruitment of young candidates for the ministry should be the responsibility of all members. V. PASTORAL ROLE FOR LAITY (THE CLERGY-LAITY SYNDROME. ) There was a period when critical discussions arose on the role of clergy and laity in the local church. Scope of work for pastors seemed to be compartmentalized e.g. they should be concerned only on the spiritual concerns of the church and lay people govern the administration. Pastors should not be LCEC Chairmen, whether they direct the LCEC or not (Discipline provision). What are the parameters? Both clergy and laity have distinct roles in wholistic church growth. God is well pleased with a wellgrounded team ministry by both! VI. VYING FOR THE RETURN OF THE GLORY OF GOD: There is no doubt that despite our fallacies, God, who is no respector of persons is still working His will and purpose in and through His church, and in particular, our Conference. His sustaining hands is evident in our growth and development over the years. Our Conference needs to continue to grow numerically (quantity), qualitatively (spiritual growth and discipleship) and organically (ministries, leadership, governance, giving and involvement). In so doing, God should take His rightful place. We need to enthrone Him in our endeavours. Our part at all levels should be faithfulness to Him for he is already faithful (I Thessalonians 5:24). I stand to be corrected in my observations. The current emphasis on prayer is praiseworthy and there must be total involvement by the total Conference. If God can transform our nation overnight through the prayers of his saints what more, His glorious presence can lift us to greater heights. To Him and him alone be all glory forever! Rev. Dr. A.E. Joseph If God can transform our nation what more, His glorious presence can lift us to greater heights. Though the priesthood of all believers is ideal, the fact remains that the pastor is put in charge of a church he works with a team of lay people. Sometimes pastors were frowned if they were not as competent as the laity. This comparison spread to the capability from pastor to pastor. Is God pleased with such an attitude? Pastors have a functional difference with laity. The laity needs to complement with a pastoral heart, true disciples in discipling people. Do I notice the lack of reverence?

12 Page 12 Missions Trip Report to Sepulut, Sabah (18 th 22 nd August 2018) Greetings in The Name of Our Savior Jesus Christ, It was indeed a great blessing for us to be able to join the Sabah Missions Trip 2.0 held from 18 th to 22 nd August 2018 organized by Malaysian Missionary Movement (MMM) TAC. There were about 8 of us in this trip; Tryphena, Roselin, Marsha from the TMC Tamil Settlement and Rev.& Mrs.Jeremiah Thomas, Ashok, Mrs.Jesintha, Darren from TMC Penang. We were guided by Rev. David Thanivel throughout the trip. Area of focus of our mission trip was in Sapulut, Sabah among the Muruts. Our ministry focus was to strengthen the faith and discipleship of the Muruts since 85% of them are Christians. Sadly, only a few of them are attending churches. We conducted activities and sharing among them and we as a team were given the opportunity to strengthen their faith in Christ through prayer and worship. Not forgetting, we were also greatly blessed by their hospitality towards us, especially their heart to serve the guests. We had the chance to share our culture together and bless each other in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Overall, a lot of memories were made throughout this trip and we will continue to pray for Sabah especially for the Muruts. We would also like to thank Rev David Thanivel, MMM and our Lord Jesus Christ for giving us the opportunity to do His ministry in Sabah. May God Bless Sabah. Throughout these 5-day mission trip, we conducted ministries among the children, youths and elderly people in many different churches in BCCM Sapulut, BCCM Balaron, BCCM Sinsingon, BCCM Simatuoh, BCCM Tataluan, PP Tibow, PP Mawantul and PP Liningkar. To GOD be all GLORY Blessings, Ms. Tryphena David TMC Tamil Settlement

13 Page 13 TAC Laity Convention 2018 at APC KL Date: 7 th to 9 th September Introduction: Total attendance were 132 (2 guests, 2 Pastors, 8 MYAF and MSF reps, 120 participants, targeted 180). Churches participated; Perak 5/11 [13 participants], Southern 5/10 [10 participants], Eastern 5/6 [15 participants], Northern 3/6 [18 participants], Central 6/9 [32 participants], Selangor 11/12 [32 participants] (Total 35 out of 54 churches were represented). 2. The keynote address was given by TAC President, Rev. Dennis Raj who shared from the parable of the Good Samaritan. The Good Samaritan; a. He took pity, b. He was willing to be interrupted, c. He was willing to give his time. He concluded by reminding us of the new commandment Jesus gave to love one another (John 13:34-35). 3. There were 3 inspirational sessions shared by the guest speaker Rev. ARGST Barnabas from Church of South India. At the first session he shared that we are called into priestly, kingly and prophetic role. He clearly explained that all came from laos meaning God s chosen people and not laikos (not found in the NT) meaning laity or common/uneducated. A pastor is a class leader, co-workers. Our job is not to criticize but to participate following the example of Jesus (Phil. 2:5-6). At the second session he shared how a lay person sees a pastor; Luke writing about Barnabas who had a pastoral heart. There can be pastors without pastoral heart. If you want to have pastoral heart you need to be filled with the Holy Spirit; A. Strengthened in our innermost man, B. Empowered, C. Enhance our character. Barnabas was ready to give up his leadership, helpful, giving importance to individual and practical. We too must be sacrificial and willing to give up everything for Christ s sake. At the concluding session, he shared about Nehemiah, how a typical lay man gave an account of himself. God chose the people of Israel as His own, yet they kept on disobeying. God is concerned about the holiness of His temple/body (2 Chronicles 36:14-16). Nehemiah was a. A man of compassion (Neh. 1:4) and visionary for the nation, b. A man of prayer, c. A man of planning, d. A man who organizes, e. A problem solving man, f. A man of courage. He concluded with what Bishop Polycarp said, We are fighting for a great COST and a great GOD. 4. At the plenary session one, Laity with Pastoral Heart 2 speakers spoke; i. The conference Lay Leader, Mr. S.Selvaraj shared the problem with our churches based on 1 Thessalonians 1:3 that we remain as believers and do not mature to become disciples. ii. Dr. Thaveethu Moses, an orthopaedic surgeon by profession, shared from a practical point that you don t have to search for ministry. He used the Good Samaritan parable to highlight that the Samaritan was on the way to work when he met the need of an individual, therefore, being neighborly is doing the right thing wherever you are. In conclusion, we should not dichotomize our life between spiritual and physical. We cannot be Sunday Christians, rather, we must be the same whether we are in the church or outside. 5. This was followed with a Concurrent Session on Leadership with Pastoral Heart divided into 3 topics; a. Session 1: Churchianity vs. Christianity. There were 3 speakers; Rev. Doraiseelan John (We should give importance to the lost in church. God is not pleased when we go against the man of God), Mrs. Kany Jayapal (We need to determine the parameters for the Christianity and Churchianity. Churchianity refers to excessive attachment to forms of practices of church or when Christ is removed and replaced by the Church) and Mr. S.Selvaraj (gave a comparison between a church as a club being our practice as Churchianity and Christianity). b. Session 2: Church Growth: What is it? Whose responsibility? The 3 speakers were Mr. Jayapal Joseph, Datuk Windsor Paul and Mr. Victor Rajamoney. Church growth refers to both physical and spiritual. Every individual has be responsible. Social media and living a nominal Christian life are the greatest hindrances. c. Session 3: Effective Lay Leadership What is it? Why it is important? The 3 speakers were Rev Justin Clarence, Mrs.Vijayatara Jayaraj and Mr Clarence James. Rev Justin gave the definition of effective lay leadership. Mrs.Vijaya shared on 3essential qualities of a leader that would make him/her more effective.it was based on Micah 6: 8- Act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with God. Mr.Clarence mentioned some more ways; don t be a yes-man, work with your Pastor and have a good working relationship with the members. To develop on-going training and character assessment. We must serve not expecting anything but because of the love of God and that Christ died for us. 6. On the second day, at the plenary session two, Lay Perspective of TAC: Revisit to Reformulate the following 4 speakers shared; i. Mr. Dennis D. talked about the ministry of MMM. He said we have a new opportunity of doing Reverse Mission among the more than 6 million foreigners in Malaysia. ii. Mr. Steven Sekhar revisited or walked through with us regarding the work of the Young Adults. He gave some statistics; chapters and membership since 1995 and compared also with the other agencies. Apart from tapping the resources and networking via the family camp and quiz, we must think of new models to keep MYAF alive and relevant.

14 Page 14 iii. Mrs. Mary Devadason spoke about the MW. They have a long history, a very balanced program and connected internationally via World Federation of Methodist & Uniting Church Women (WFMUCM). They are planning to alternate MW Conference with Spiritual Camp, to have Biennial Conference on Mission and Evangelism and challenge new and young women into leadership. iv. The fourth speaker was Mr. Joel Nickesh who shared about MYF. He shared his concerns about the youths and how we should view them, to identify their talents individually and spend time with them acknowledging their gifting. Dr. Anthony Row pointed out that all the speakers have shared what happened in the past or happening now in the present and nothing much was said regarding solutions or how we should formulate to move on ahead in the future. 7. The second Concurrent Session on Lay Leadership and Ministerial Foresight was also divided into 3 topics; a. Session 1: Breaking the Structure. Following were the 3 speakers; Rev. Joseph Yesupatham, Dr. Anthony Row and Mrs. Shobana Rannet Prabakaran. There must be a balance between spiritual and social; wholistic development. Structure is good if it allows growth, maturity and innovative ideas. b. Session 2: Marketplace Discipleship. The 3 speakers were Ps. PP. Abraham, Mr. Dass Supperamaniam and Mr. Aaron Raj. Discipleship is creating a Christ-like mindset in others (internal change). Marketplace discipleship is a ministry. Be exemplary. It is Jesus who brings the change in someone. Our lifestyle is important. c. Session 3: Servanthood Leadership. There were 3 speakers; Mr. Samuel Peter Seeni (Mark 10: As leaders, we make decisions, lead, influence, guide and persuade. Jesus is our role model), Mr. Achu Naidu (A servant leader sacrificially seeks the highest joy of those he serves. 1 Tim. 3:1-13. He shared the marks and characteristics of a servant leader.) and Mrs. Flora Justin Clarance (Matthew 20: When you realize you are nobody, God becomes supreme. We are servants of the Most High God. A servant leader should have listening, communicating and decision making skill and empathy). 8. The first paper presentation on Church and Modern Day Mission: Restrategizing for God s Kingdom was by Prof. Datuk Dr. Denison Jayasooria. He went on to explain how mission is defined and whether we narrowly define it; only spiritual (evangelism and church planting) or only social, economic and political. It generally refers to God s covenant with humanity. Then we have the new covenant and Jesus. Hebrews 8:6-13. He concluded by sharing opportunities for mission today; our role in sharing the good news (Rom. 10:15, John 3:16) and our role in compassion and justice (Prov. 31:8-9, Micah 6:8, Eph. 5:15-16). Practically; 1. Our calling in the workplace as the mission field, 2. Being a witness every day, 3. Exporting strategic positions in government, private sector and CSO-NGO, 4. Starting new organizations to mobilize citizens action in society. 9. Just before we concluded the second day, at an evening with the lay leaders, Harmonizing the Clergy Laity Relationships, all the district lay leaders, associate and conference lay leaders shared the situation of the lay people as how they see it. 10. On the final day, we participated in the Sunday Worship service. After that, there was an informal session where all the participants divided in 6 groups according to their districts shared whatever complaints or concerns that they had. In conclusion, it was suggested that the Board of Laity meets more frequently and also activate the District Laity Commission and the Lay Committee at the local church level. Group photograph was taken before the concluding session. 11. The final session was on TAC: The Way Forward Embracing Differences: Managing Dynamics a. Conference Lay Leader, Mr. S.Selvaraj Luke 14:25-35, In 3 verses, 26, 27, 33 Jesus kept saying you cannot be my disciple unless you forsake everything else; all people, self and materials. He went on to describe a disciple as a follower, a learner and a person who is sent out. Mark 10:35-45 Servant leadership must be practiced in the local church. b. President, Rev. Dennis Raj Isaiah 64:4 The way forward is the way upward. Satan has deceived many of us by keeping our focus on humans. Only God can build. Therefore, you must believe and pray. Isaiah 64:7 No one calls on your name or strives to lay hold of you; for you have hidden your face from us and have given us over to our sins. He reiterated that we should never become like this! Always remember and say, Lord, this is your church. Amen. Compiled by Jacob Korinthiar from TMC Sg. Petani
