2 207 Message 208 The Holy Father's Prayer Intention for Mission: Evangelization: Priests and their Pastoral Ministry: That priests, who experience fatigue and loneliness in their pastoral work, may find help and comfort in their intimacy with the Lord and in their friendship with their brother priests. ARCHBISHOP'S MESSAGE My Lord My God 1. St. Thomas: Apostle of Faith These are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God and that believing you may have life in his name (Jn. 20:31), Jesus came into the world so that we many have life, life in abundance (cf. Jn. 10:10). During the earthly life of Jesus, many proclaimed faith in Jesus. In the name of the Apostles, St. Peter proclaimed faith in Jesus: You are the Christ, the Son of the living God (Mt. 16:16). Immediately after the death of Jesus on the cross; the centurion proclaimed faith in Jesus: Truly this man was the Son of God (Mk. 15:39). The so-called doubting St. Thomas is the First of the Apostles to proclaim the Easter Faith of the church. When the risen Lord appeared to the Apostles, St. Thomas was absent. When he heard the appearance of the risen Lord, he doubted. He wanted verifications. The risen Lord appeared to St. Thomas, Message offered his side to be touched, showed his hands and the scars of his wounds and healed the wounds of Thomas unbelieving (St. Gregory the great). Thomas immediately said: My Lord and My God (Jn. 20:28). Thomas saw and he believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe (Jn. 20:29), said our Lord to Thomas. Our country India is privileged and blessed to have been evangelized by St. Thomas, one of the twelve Apostles. We the Indian Christians, are blessed because we believe in Jesus Christ without seeing him. Every year on July 3 rd we celebrate the feast of St. Thomas. The celebration of the feast of St. Thomas is, indeed, celebration of our faith. We are justified not by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ (cf. Gal. 2:16). If you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved (Rom. 10:9). Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Son of God, conquers the world (1 Jn. 5:5). The celebration of the feast of St. Thomas should help us to grow in our faith, live our faith and share our faith with others. We have received much, namely, our faith; we should learn to give much, that is, generously and courageously share our faith with others. The Apostles proclaimed the gospel by the word of mouth. What they proclaimed by the word of mouth, they confirmed by the mode of their holy and exemplary life and they perfected it by their mode of death, namely by their martyrdom. Following the example of the Apostles, let us proclaim the gospel by word and deed, by our exemplary and holy life. Lord, increase our faith (Lk. 17:5) Mary, queen of the Apostles, pray for us.

God wants us to be healthy and happy in the body and beyond the body. How many of the people of God and all the more so the clergy and the religious lead themselves towards a healthy and happy life is a serious question for a prayerful discernment and decision, way of life and balanced diet. Today many of the children of God and youngsters pass away due to various reasons and we are neither prepared to learn the lessons nor able to share with others is a sad and bad situation we encounter now and then among ourselves and others. Let us tune ourselves to the plan of God daily and live a meaningful purposeful and fruitful life for ourselves and help others also especially the poor during this modern period of consumerism, materialism and hedonism. To further the awakening about the Synod there are few articles written in Sarva Viabi for the public so that all are prepared for a meaningful renewal of faith and service especially the clergy and the religious, the guides of the people of God. It is a golden opportunity to promote Sarva Viabi by inviting people to subscribe to our weekly news review. 6 215 Tribunal 216 Tribunal VOICE FROM METROPOLITAN MATRIMONIAL TRIBUNAL - 93 Triple Functions of Religion should strengthen the Family & Society today Can religion divide people? If you go to the etymology of religion it is just the opposite. Religion comes from the root word in Latin religare which originally means binding. It purports that religion by its nature is an instrument that unites people creating cohesiveness among them. The questions such as Is religion good or bad? Has it become superfluous? are bound to come. Answers to these questions depend on the way we understand the functions of religion and promote it. In a society a religion can function in three ways, namely, a. Habitual, b. Magical and c. Prophetic. Analysing these three functions of religion can throw better light on the complexities of the problems we face today, at least from a sociological perspective. Habitual Religion: Religion can become part of the habit of a person and people may practice religion for cultural and social needs without getting into the content of it. We see that in societies that are secular in which people come to Church or other worshipping places either as a habitual practice formed from childhood or to become part of a community that practices a particular religion. I had a surprise last week with a parent whose child is going to be baptized next week. I am in a parish now for a couple of months replacing the parish priest who is ill. In this parish the custom demands that any parents whose child is to be baptized must meet the parish priest who explains to them about the significance of the baptism and its rites. As I was fulfilling this duty, I was surprised to note that the parent, although educated, did not even know the word original sin which is supposed of one core teachings of the Catholic Church. This is a typical example of the one who practices religion but without minding its content. Some people go to the church because they are used to. For such people religion matters inasmuch as it is a social institution which binds them in a community. They come to the Church for sociological or psychological needs and they do not permit religion to exert an influence over their life and morals. Religion is compartmentalized and cut off from their personal realm of life and their value system. Magical Religion: Some people understand religion in a magical sense. Sidelining the interventions of God in ordinary life through various natural and human agencies, they look for the extraordinary intervention of God in life. Many of the corporate gurus and modern preachers promote this kind of religion. Recently a video is on the rounds in the social media in which the preacher indulges in an unconventional way of praying over a barren lady. In the same way, I noticed an advertisement for a Lenten retreat which invited all those who are economically burdened to participate so that all their financial problems may be solved. Like this you may also come across numerous happenings. This kind of religion is attractive to the people but can wean them off their responsibilities for themselves, society and others. The faith in this kind of religion is built upon rigid rules, conventions, ideologies and practices which exclude the other. Fundamentalism has its roots in this kind of religion which makes people closed, exclusive, fanatic and fundamentalist because it is blindfolded and does not give importance to reason. None of its content is put under the scrutiny of reason but has recourse only to emotions and sentiments. Most of the fundamentalist groups in the world propagate this kind of magical religion. However, ironically if we delve into the origins of all religions, they all speak of the values of inclusivism, love and compassion but unfortunately their structures have made them exclusive and violent. When such religion is headed by the people with vested interest of power they turn such religion to their gain. That is what is taking place in India today through Hindutva politics. Prophetic Religion: There is a third kind of religion which is prophetic. Such religion wants its people to assume responsibility for the world and the other. All the religions at their inception have been a protest

7 217 Tribunal 218 Tribunal to the existing injustices and rigid forms conventions and religious practices that are inhuman. A prophetic religion wants to keep up this spirit and works for universal brotherhood. It seeks to see the other as the presence of God and wills to promote the other as a result of the demand of the content of its faith. As far as Christianity is concerned it should work for such universality of brotherhood in view of the reign of God which is its ideal. It demands the Christians not to confine ourselves with ghetto mentality or ideology but join hands with all those who work for common good. Such religion is inclusive by nature. The challenge for all those who are involved in religion is to make it more and more prophetic and appealing. It is a challenge. The first category is left to the choice of the individual. However, it can be made more appealing and challenging them. To be a promoter of magical religion is easier which easily brings name, fame and other comforts while the third one is more demanding and challenging which demands self-emptying and sacrifice. Jesus was against the first two forms of religion. That he was against the first form of religion is evident from his condemnations against the Pharisees, his statements on law, the violations of ablution rituals and the way he dined with the people. He was not for magical religion which is evident from his refusal to work miracles for the sake of popularity (Mt.12:38) and eluding from the crowds after the multiplication to avoid personal glorification and power (Jn. 6:15). Jesus mission was prophetic preaching the unconditional love of God which united all people as brothers and sisters in Spirit crossing the boundaries of blood, race and the binaries of purity and impurity and clean and unclean. Today in the context of the ascending fundamentalism, promoting such religion is the need of the day. It is possible only when the people of good will in each religion join together to work for unity. Fundamentalism cannot be countered by another religion which is exclusive by nature but by joining the secular and religious forces that work for brotherhood and peace. While we extend hands with minority religions and sects to express our solidarity when their rights are tampered, it is also our duty to condemn the exclusive tendencies wherever found no matter whether it is within or outside. Families are to be given utmost care in this given situation to bring up our children. We need look into everyone to practice faith, call to holiness and to have a sacramental life for a peaceful living. Points to Ponder The last age is courage; the last mile is smile; the last stand is understand and the last end is friend. Today a reader Tomorrow a leader - Margaret Bullar. Not all readers are leaders but all leaders are readers - Herry S. Trumany Three pillars for consecrated life are prayer, poverty and patience that are permanent in consecrated life. Prayer is a return to the first call ; poverty is the mother ; and patience is the capacity to suffer, which sustains consecrated life. - Pope Francis. In consecrated life, prayer is the air that allows that call to breathe in us; it renews that call. Without this air we cannot be good consecrated men and women. - Pope Francis. One never knows the ways through which fruitfulness passes, but if you pray, if you are poor, if you are patient, you are sure to be fruitful. - Pope Francis. For your kind information: I will be away from the tribunal office from July to September 2018 to update and have an experience of other tribunals. The office is closed. Please do not send anybody to the tribunal office till I am back to assume the office in October Thanking you. Rev.Fr. S. Pascal Raj Judicial Vicar

K.A.Jesu Nazarene] Secretary, Charismatic Renewal Director, St. Avila Theresa Spiritual Centre Mobile Number: St. Xavier s Pastoral Centre. 02. Commission for Evangelization On 17 th June we had the one-day Monthly Prayer Meeting conducted by Rev. Fr. Jacob, Parish Priest, Sogandi of Chinglepet Diocese. This month we will have this meeting on 21st of July and Rev. Fr. I. John Kennedy, Parish Priest, Palayam, Kumbakonam Diocese will conduct the meeting. We have been successfully conducting this programme for the past two years. Hundreds of our Catholics feel that it is very useful. So kindly inform our people so that many more may come and participate and profit spiritually. 02. Commission for Communication and Social Media We had the Secretaries meeting at Santhome Communication Centre, Chennai on 21 st of June. We had extensively discussed about the participation of our people in the production of the programmes for Madha T.V. In Myak; mwpnthk; programme, our churches can come forward to invite our Madha T.V. shooting team and they will come and shoot the programme for which you have to pay but for telecasting, it is free of cost. So also,y;ye;njhuk;,iwahl;rp programme is also done like this. Kindly come forward and contact me. Let our churches and good catholic families be known to the society by our Madha T.V. 03. World Communication Day Dear Fathers, Today s world is contaminated by lies through the social media. Media is manipulated by corporate companies, the rich and the political forces. So people are kept in dark from the truth and are given false news. So people are made to consider the

13 229 Commissions 230 Commissions bad people as good, thus the evil ones come to power by these false media. So our Pope has come out with a strong proposal to fight against the evil social media. So I request you to go through my circular and make use of the materials that I have sent to you by post and make awareness to the people how to evaluate news papers, television programmes and social media like Internet, Whatsapp, Twitter, Facebook, linked in etc. The message of the Pope is given below. Kindly read. md;ghh;e;j rnfhju rnfhjhpfns! njhlh;g (communication)vd;gj,iwtd; ekf;f tfj;jspj;j jpl;lj;jpd; xu gfjpak;> Njhoikia mdgtpf;f kpftk;,d;wpaikahj topak; MFk;. gilj;jthpd; rhayhftk; ghtidahftk; gilf;fg;gl;l ek;khy;>,it midj;jk; cz;ikahdj> ed;ikahdj> mofhdj vd;w ntspg;glj;jtk; gfputk; KbTk;. ehk; ekj nrhe;j mdgtq;fisak; ek;ikr; Rw;wpAs;s,e;j cyifak; tpthpf;f KbAk;:,jd; %yk; tuyhw;w epiditak;> epfo;tfisg; gw;wpa xu GhpjiyAk; ehk; Vw;gLj;JfpNwhk;.,jw;F khwhf> ehk;ekj Mztj;jpw;Fk; Raeyj;jpw;Fk; ek;ikna ifaspj;jtpl;lhy;> njhlh;gnfhs;sk; ekj jpwd;kpf;f topkiwia ehk; rpijf;fpnwhk;.,jid ehk; njhlf;ff; fhyj;jpy;> tptpypa fijfshd fhapd; MNgy;> ghngy; NfhGuk; Mfpatw;wpy; fhz KbfpwJ (fhz;f. njh.e}.4:4-16> 11:1-9). cz;ikiaj; jphpf;fk; jpwdhdj xt;nthu jdpkdpjhpd;> r%fq;fspd; epiyia vlj;jr;nrhy;yk; Neha;f;fhd mwpfwpahfk;.,d;ndhu tifapy;> ehk;,iwtdpd; jpl;lj;jpw;f ek;gpf;iff;fhpath;fshf,uf;fk;nghj> cz;ikf;fhd nghwg;gzh;tkpf;f NjlypYk; ed;ikf;fhd ehl;lj;jpyk; gad;kpf;f caph;g;gz;ghf,e;jj; njhlh;g khwfpwj. kpf tpiuthf khwptuk; cyfr; r%fj; njhlh;gpyk; b[pl;ly; mikg;g KiwapYk;> Nghypr; nra;jpfs; vd;w mwpag;glfpw xd;w> gutp tutjw;f ehnk rhd;wiuf;fpnwhk;.,j Fwpj;J rpe;jpf;f miof;fg;glfpnwhk;: vdntjhd;>,e;j cyf r%fj; njhlh;g jpdr; nra;jpia> vdf;f Kd;G jpuj;je;ijahf,ue;j jpuj;je;ijah;fs;> jpuk;g jpuk;g typawj;jpa cz;ik Fwpj;j nra;jpia ikag;glj;jpl tpiofpnwd;: jpuj;je;ij Mwhy; gty;> cz;ikf;fr; Nrit nra;ak; r%fj;njhlh;gfs; vd;w ikaf;fuj;jpd; mbg;gilapy; 1972 Mk; Mz;L toq;fpdhh;. mq;qznk> ehdk; Nghypr; nra;jpfs; guthky; jlg;gjw;fhd ekj r%ff; flikf;f typiknrh;f;ftk;>,jopaypd; khz;igak; cz;ikia mwptpg;gjw;fhd gj;jphpifahsh;fspd; jdpg;gl;l nghwg;gzh;itak; kpz;lk; fz;lzutk; tpiofpnwd;. 1.Nghypr;nra;jpfspy; cs;s Nghypj;jd;ik ahj?
