1 ST PAUL S POST St Paul s Province Weekly Newsletter: September 2018 Our birthday girls this week are: Maire Murphy Moya O Cleary 23 September 23 September For God to be truth, God had to be one; for God to be love, God had to be two; and for God to be joy, God had to be three! Richard of St Victor ( ) Nature Reflects God's Goodness (1) God brought things into being in order that God s goodness might be communicated to creatures, and be represented by them; and because God s goodness could not be adequately represented by one creature alone, God produced many and diverse creatures that what was wanting to one in the representation of the divine goodness might be supplied by another. For goodness, which in God is simple and uniform, in creatures is manifold and divided. [Summa Theologica, I, 47, 1.] Sent from Pat Carney

3 Why did St Paul of the Cross pray for England? Watch this space! PART I: THE PRIEST S HOLE IN RIPLEY CASTLE, YORKSHIRE During a few days holiday in Elmleigh, Ilkley in August I visited Ripley Castle, the home of the Ingilby family, to see a Priest s Hole. I found it high up in the tower. It was hidden, of course, behind wooden panelling and discovered only in Beside it there is a stone spiral staircase that was possibly also hidden for centuries. I was amazed at how small the Hole was for a man to hide in, seated on a four-inch shelf, for hours, possibly even for days and also without food, drink, light and possibly even much air. The Priest s Hole The stone staircase Obviously the family were Catholic recusants in the penal times, refusing to abandon their Faith at the whim of the tyrant King Henry VIII or his daughter, Elizabeth I. On the walls of the room there are two interesting portraits, one of a Catholic priest, Father Francis Ingelby (as the name was spelt at that time) and the other of a Benedictine nun. Francis was born in 1550, the son of Sir William Ingleby and his wife, Ann Mallory, a very staunch Catholic. About 1565 Francis was studying at Brasenose College, Oxford. In 1576 he was studying Law at the Inner Temple, London. While he was there he may have met one of the seminary priests, English Catholic young men who had gone to study for the priesthood on the continent, in order to return to keep the Catholic Faith alive in England. It is also said that, back at Ripley Castle, he had a mystical experience which led him to go to the English College in Rheims, arriving there on 18 August He was ordained as a priest at Laon on 24 December 1583 and on 5 April 1584 he set out to return to England. The Priest s Hole at Ripley Castle may have been made for him. Father Francis Ingleby spent most of his time near York, however, and was one of the priests sheltered by St Margaret Clitherow, but he was captured in the spring of 1586 and imprisoned in York Castle. When he was condemned to death for being a priest, he replied (in Latin), I believe I shall see the good things of the Lord in the land of the living. On 3 June 1586 he was taken to the Knavesmire in York and hanged, possibly taken down before he was dead, cut open and disembowelled. Then his heart was cut out and finally he was beheaded and his limbs cut off. St Pope John Paul II beatified him on 22 November The Beatification The Benedictine nun whose portrait hangs on the wall in the same room was his niece, Anne Ingleby, daughter of his brother, David, who guided seminary priests around the north of England and had to flee to the Continent. Her mother was Anne Neville, daughter of the 6th Earl of Westmorland of Raby Castle, Durham. Born in 1593, Anne Ingleby received the Benedictine religious habit as a choir nun in Brussels on 22 July 1611 and professed her religious vows there on 22 July She died, also on 22 July, in 1626 in Brussels.
4 Ripley s village church was built in the fifteenth century. Considering that Oliver Cromwell was in that area during the Civil War in the seventeenth century, it is amazingly unscathed!
