5 Page 5 Treasury Notes Greetings ladies! I hope everyone is having a wonderful summer; hopefully you get a chance to relax, recharge and take in some sunshine. It s hard to believe we re over half way through Time flies when you re having fun! As the year marches on I was hoping we d be closer to completing our pledge. As of June 30 we are still $45, 000 away from meeting our pledge so keep your remittances coming. Remember, money remitted is money in mission. We are looking forward to seeing many of you at our fall district meeting in Tuscola on September 20th. At that meeting we will be selling tickets to the Conference Annual Meeting ($15/ticket) that will be held on Saturday, October 18 at Savoy UMC. We ll also have a great selection of Gift in Mission cards alongside our usual Program Resource spread, so bring your checkbooks! NOTE TO TREASURERS: We will have a short pledge service at the fall meeting. Please bring a slip of paper listing your pledge for 2015 or if you cannot attend send with someone from your unit. These will be collected during the pledge service. It will be a great time to celebrate all the wonderful work you treasurers do! MaryBess Gordon 300 S. Jacobsen Drive Thomasboro, IL marybessgordon@gmail.com This summer is not over by a long shot. There are plenty of long days ahead to kick back and indulge in another book or two. Choosing a bonus book to read, will chalk up two for the reading of one. Keep reading and recording so that you will be on that coveted list of UMW Reading Program participants for 2014 at our fall meeting in Tuscola. Remember that this year we are receiving credit for books from But more than that, read to satisfy you on subjects of fracking, human trafficking, and recycling. We can look forward to studies in Climate Justice at Mission u in the near future. better perspective. This picture is a sign at the beginning of the chow line in the cafeteria at Henderson Settlement. Surely we all remember what our mothers told us about only putting on your plate what you will eat? If you are still hungry when you finish that, you can have more. It s that more that catches most of us. I belong to the clean plate club. I have never met a calorie that I didn t like. Now if I can replace my eating habits with reading ones on how to put food on other plates that would really be a catch! Program Resources Some of you know that my relax time is generally when I am sleeping. Hearing others talk about relaxing with a good book just makes me jealous since I fall asleep if I try to read to relax. Reading is still pretty much a chore unless the subject is animals, or our mother earth. Find a subject that keeps you awake and learn about it so you can share your insight with the rest of us. Barb Rascher rascher@illinois.edu 802 E. Larmon St. Tolono, IL (home) Reading is not just about books, magazines, and newspapers. Reading is something we do every day. And when we actually absorb what we read, it helps us navigate through life with a

6 Page 6 Spiritual Growth Yikes!! I am the spiritual growth coordinator for my unit for next year. What am I supposed to do!?! First of all RE- LAX, take a deep breath, and give a prayer of thanks for this opportunity to serve your unit in this way. Each local UMW has different expectations for various jobs and this may be the first place to ask. Another source is the UMW Handbook for which can be downloaded for free from the National UMW website. On page 44 here are some bullet points with my own additional suggestions in brackets: -Use the meditations and other resources on (also search meditation books like Upper Room, in Learn section of Response magazine for Bible Study, start a folder of brief articles that can be a starting point for a devotion) -Pray using the Prayer Calendar (use this at your executive board meetings, every circle gathering, have your members commit to communicating with one or more of the missionaries/deacons by sending birthday cards) -Plan programs that encourage spiritual growth among the group (plan a mini retreat to learn various ways to meditate and read the Bible, start a Bible study on a particular book or themes such as the parables or women of the Bible) -Have your prayers and study groups connect with issues to be addressed like immigration, needs of children, or ecology) -Create prayer partners both within your group and with other groups in your church. Be creative and think outside of the box. Try new things. Don t always do what has been done, but make this job suit your personality, interests and talents. Be willing to grow personally as you serve God and your local UMW in this special service opportunity. Pat Davis Spiritual Growth Coordinator 3204 Ridge Park Rd. Urbana, IL pat@bnpdavis.com Lessie Bates Davis Neighborhood House Dear Sisters in Christ, As you plan to attend our District Fall Meeting in Tuscola, please bring the following items for Lessie Bates Davis Neighborhood House: adult diapers (men and women), lotion (hand or body), combs and brushes. As always, LBDNH appreciates all that you do for the children and families they serve. LBDNH was funded for a Summer Community Youth Employment Program and are currently assisting over 130 youth between the ages of 16 and 24 in finding jobs in the surrounding communities. The Back to School Giveaway this year is on August 9th. November 8th is their 105th Annual Celebration which will be a luncheon this year at the Gateway Convention Center. Tickets are $45. We hope many of you will come out for this event. This is when we have the basket auction. Celebration theme is 105: Mission Alive! If you are donating a basket for the auction we have a few guidelines. 1 Choose a theme 2 All basket items need to be nonperishable and check use by dates 3 Wrap basket in clear cellophane or put it in clear cellophane bag 4 Attach a list of items and approximate value firmly to outside of basket LBDNH is asking for only 5 baskets from each district to be auctioned off at their celebration. Therefore, we were thinking that each unit that wants to participate in helping fund LBDNH with a basket could make up a themed basket and bring them to the Fall Meeting where we will have a silent auction. We will then give the money raised to LBDNH. Donations in lieu of baskets can be sent directly to Lisa Graves at 1200 North 13th St., E. St. Louis or brought to meeting. Please mark donation check accordingly. Linda Grose 1189 Country Club Road Sullivan, IL mikelindagrose@gmail.com Susan Connor 1431 CR 800N Sullivan, IL radtech @yahoo.com

7 Page 7 Social Action Bunny Wolfe, Illinois Great Rivers Conference Coordinator of Missions and Outreach, is passionate about mission work in the eighth year of our Liberia Partnership. She has made 20 mission trips and arranges many for our conference. In her April 2013 visit she helped identify 10 sites around Monrovia in need of wells and learned of 150 requests through Liberia. Liberia Well Project is an Advance Special. In April 2014 Bunny closely monitored the Ebola outbreak in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia. She contacted UMCOR and Priscilla Jaia, missionary and Director of Ganta Mission Station. Even though we have helped build or renovate many schools, churches, wells and parsonages and continue to provide student scholarships and pastor s salary support, Bunny Wolfe stated recently, Our partnership is not about buildings and projects. The projects and God s call get us there. The real story is about changed lives...both in Liberia and in our own conference. We have an opportunity to change lives with our seed collection for Liberia which Bunny will take on her visit in January unless the quantity of seeds received is large enough to be shipped in a barrel from the Midwest Mission Distribution Center. An alternative to purchasing seeds is to make a monetary donation so that seeds can be purchased in the capitol city of Monrovia. Bunny asks that the seeds have a date of 2014 on the package and in some cases you may have to ask a clerk for help as some seeds have already been taken off the shelves. Bring the seeds to the fall district meeting in Tuscola. Let s make it happen as we put faith, hope and love into action! If your unit begins with A L please bring these seeds: okra collards cabbage tomato eggplant onion If your unit begins with M Z please bring these seeds: sweet corn green pepper cucumber pumpkin round seedless watermelon peanuts No squash or bean seeds and no flower seeds please. Patty Russell Social Action Coordinator 215 Forest Glen Tuscola, IL prussell61953@yahoo.com Membership, Nurture & Outreach Happy summer to you all! I hope it isn t too hot and not too wet and just right to get in the mood to go to mission u. Now for the best news to all members of the UMW. Look in your president s packet at the district meeting for the new membership forms for you to fill out and send back to me by December 31st so I can send my report to Caroline. It is a new form so please call or write to me to get help. It is simple now. I hope to see everyone at the fall meeting in Tuscola. Stay cool and remember to meet and greet new friends, inviting them to join your unit. The children and youth at Cunningham Children s Home are having chances to enjoy the summer with boating, camping, swimming, movies and fishing. One of the counselors talked about seeing the face of a young man named Doug catching his first fish at Crystal Lake Park. She said the fish was not very big but the smile on Doug s face was. Scott came to Cunningham as a youth who had trouble controlling his emotions and always became involved in negative relationships. But with the help of staff, Chaplain Gay and Chaplain Melvin, Scott has grown in faith and emotional stability. Scott is now living in the Boys Group Home where he has more independence and his spiritual journey has been amazing. Scott is currently serving as leader at Chapel services. Doug and Scott are just two of the many stories that speak to building one another up and the Power of Hope. And Cunningham is about Hope. Greetings United Methodist Women!
