1 THE SERVICE OF WORSHIP FOR THE SEVENTH SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY February 24, :30 a.m. * All who are able may stand Congregation reads aloud the bold print THE TIME OF CENTERING "I think, therefore I am? Nonsense! I love, therefore I am." ~ William Sloane Coffin, 20 th century THE COMMUNITY OF FAITH GATHERS PRELUDE Moments musicaux (Op. 94, No. 1) Franz Schubert Jeffrey DeVault, organ OPENING SCRIPTURE WELCOME THE LIGHT OF CHRIST ENTERS Open to Me the Gates of Righteousness Chancel Choir Rev. Elizabeth Lyman J. N. Beck *CALL TO WORSHIP O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt God s name together. From the rising of the sun to its setting, the name of the Lord be praised! Nations shall come to the light, and leaders to the brightness of God s dawn. They shall bring gifts and proclaim the praise of the Lord. Arise, shine; for our light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon us! Come, let us worship God! *HYMN NO. 269 Lead On, O King Eternal! PRAYER OF CONFESSION AND RECONCILIATION God our Source and Christ our foundation, we confess to you that we have often been careless in our construction of community. Even in the church, we do not live as if we are the temple of your Spirit, much less conform our individual lives to the wisdom of the cross. (cont d)
2 Yet you are still faithful in your love for us, calling us to be more than we are because of Christ, and filling us with the grace of your Spirit so that we may yet embody your holiness and peace. Bless us, we pray, with the gift of love, that we may see you at all times, in all people. Amen (Please take this time in silence to offer your own prayers of confession confessing your need for God and naming those barriers that keep you from knowing life as God s beloved child.) ASSURANCE OF PARDON God offers to each one of us the gift of wisdom and the power of grace. This is not of our own doing but comes from the very center of God s being. As we receive such gifts, we are shaped into the image of God, forgiven and whole. Thanks be to God! *RESPONSE (all sing, 2X) Halle, Halle, Hallelujah NO. 591 Halle, Halle, Halle-lu-jah, Halle, Halle, Halle-lu-jah, Halle, Halle, Halle-lu-jah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah! *GREETING OF PEACE Since God has made peace with us, let us make peace with each other. The peace of Christ be with you all. And also with you. (We greet each other: The peace of Christ be with you. Please feel free to just place your hand over your heart during the passing of the peace. We want you to stay healthy as well as peaceful.) CHILDREN S SERMON Christina Pressley PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION SCRIPTURE LESSONS Psalm 37:1-11, (The Message) p. 443 The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Amen *PRAYER OF DEDICATION Generous God, in grace you freely give, and in love you joyfully command us to imitate you. Let these gifts bear witness to the justice for which you long and offer a faithful response to the loving care that you have first given us in your law, your prophets, and your Son. 5 Gospel Sunday March 3 10:30am worship On this special Sunday, we continue to honor and explore the rich heritage of authentic gospel music, specifically African-American gospel music. As its name ( gospel means good news ) implies, these songs traditionally emphasize messages of hope amid struggle: that no matter the trial, sooner or later the grace and justice of God will be delivered. We'll include standard settings, as well as new arrangements including Hold On, I Love the Lord Who Heard My Cry, I Choose Praise, This Little Light of Mine, We Shall Overcome, and more. Featuring the Chancel Choir, Sunday School singers, soloist Maria Hess, and contemporary ensemble. Soup/Chili Cook-Off & Chocolate Challenge Sunday, March 3 following Gospel Sunday worship Enjoy a delicious hot lunch and decadent desserts all while supporting the youth attending Massanetta Springs Middle School Youth Conference! Want to just dine? Simply show up! $1/taste Ready to compete for the coveted crown? Fill out an entry form for either the Cook-Off or Challenge and return it to Christina Pressley (along with your $5.00 entry fee) by Wed., Feb. 27. Forms available in the back of the Sanctuary. Questions? Contact Christina (christina.pressley@concordpc.org, 302/ , opt. 2).

Would you please: Send your photo (head & shoulders shot for an individual or similar close-up for a couple/family) to Nancy Tucker (ntucker@pma.com) See one of our volunteers after the church service during the month of March to have your picture taken, including at the Chili Cookoff/ Chocolate Challenge on March 3. Double-check to make sure the information in the church directory is correct. (A copy will be available or view online at We will also be working to get the photos of shut-ins. Thanks for your assistance!
