A lot of people are in despair; and even in a broken condition the power of God s grace can see one through even the darkest despair. That same power extends to those of us entrusted to be a light for Him in this dark world. Some days, life feels perfect, Other days it just ain t workin. The good, the bad, the right, the wrong, And everything in between. Though it s crazy amazing, We can turn a heart with the words we say. Mountains crumble with every syllable. Hope can live or die. Last week I was helping a fourth grader with a fractions worksheet fractions. (This is also a testimony of God s sense of humor; math was a tremendous struggle for me at her age.) I could tell that she was losing patience with the work and with me. I told her to breathe and I showed her how to do it in through your nose and out your mouth. She didn t get it. I repeated the instruction. She gave me her annoyed look. I didn t give up. She finally did it and after she breathed out a laugh followed. Speak life, speak life. Look into the eyes of the brokenhearted; Watch them come alive as soon as you speak hope, You speak love, you speak Some days we may be helping a child with classwork. On another day we may have to endure a friend s or coworker s endless whining about some (yet, another) life crisis. While sitting in traffic our head may turn to a person on the street or in a car and smile. At some retail store before beginning our checkout transaction we smile and ask the cashier how is their day. Maybe we have to have a difficult conversation with a loved one with the hope of breaking generational curses that appear to be perpetuating. Well, it s crazy to imagine, Words from our lips as the arms of compassion, Mountains crumble with every syllable. Hope can live or die. The lyrics to TobyMac s Speak Life seek to inspire us when we allow ourselves to spread the love like fire. Yes, even someone like me whose pragmatic nature has to be squelched, so in someone else s life Hope will fall like rain...i Speak life! V o l u m e 1 6, I s s u e 3 M a r c h T he plans of the heart belong to man, But the answer of the tongue is from the Lord. All the ways of a man are clean in his own sight, But the Lord weighs the motives. Commit your works to the Lord And your plans will be established. The Lord has made everything for its own purpose, Even the wicked for the day of evil. Everyone who is proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord; Assuredly, he will not be unpunished. By lovingkindness and truth iniquity is atoned for, And by the fear of the Lord one keeps away from evil. When a man s ways are pleasing to the Lord, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him. Better is a little with righteousness Than great income with injustice. 4 On Saturday, February 22 nd, Galilee s Tribe of Elijah hosted Lasting Love Marriage Retreat The Scripture focus for the evening was I Corinthians 13:8a. Revs. Clarence and Mary Eldridge (Baptist Union Baptist, Dillwyn) were the first presenters speaking on What s Love Got to Do with It? Everything! Next to present were Galilee s own, Pastor Ruben Lewis and his lovely wife, Susan. Their given task was to speak on Fighting Familiarity. After the first two presentations, the guests were treated to a wonderful dinner meal provided by Mrs. Emma Martin and her catering team. At this point, the Galilean must acknowledge Pastor Lloyd Martin (Mt. Carmel Baptist, Brown s Cove) who so graciously supports his wife while she feeds the multitude and pushes her weary body instead of sitting next to him during this celebration of marriage. While dining, everyone in attendance was treated to songs by local Gospel group, Joyful Unity. The final marriage team was Pastor James and Evangelist Sarah Copeland (Union Baptist, Gordonsville) who preached on Lasting Love. They began their session by serenading each other...too cute! All three couples were honest and open about their lives together. The obstacles they had to endure before the Lord brought them together (in marriage), the influences (or lack thereof) of family and friends, personal pride, and prejudice were all shared with the audience. Needless to say, it was, is and shall continue to be the Lord in the midst of their unions that keep them joined in HOLY matrimony! This year, Galilee was joined by couples from more churches than came to last year s retreat. Perhaps the word will spread even more for 2015 s retreat. Although the event was targeted for married individuals/couples as a single person in attendance, I must say that this type of event would greatly benefit other single saints. We need to hear the struggles of married saints and how they overcame them during courtship and after marriage. 6 Days of Prayer Surely, we are called to pray without ceasing, but what a wonderful gift to our Lord when His people set aside days devoted specifically for prayer. People from numerous nations and denominations will overload the heavens petitioning on behalf of His church. Below are but a few of the efforts on behalf of prayer: The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people of all faiths to pray for the nation. It exists to communicate with every individual the need for personal repentance and prayer, to create appropriate materials, and to mobilize the Christian community to intercede for America s leaders and its families. The Task Force represents a Judeo Christian expression of the national observance, based on our understanding that this country was birthed in prayer and in reverence for the God of the Bible. World Day of Prayer is a global, ecumenical movement of Christian women joined together to observe a common day of prayer each year on the first Friday of March. Our motto of " Informed Prayer & Prayerful Action " signifies that prayer and action are inseparable. Sunday, June 8 th Global Day of Prayer. Some meetings will be small. Others will be large, but each one will be praying with the same vision of repentance and hope. As at the first Pentecost, we ll worship God openly in Christ s name and pray for the healing and blessing of the nations. As much as possible, we are seeking to 6 The Galilean
