Before you leave please sign our Guest Book as it is our permanent record and reminder of our guests. Our Order of Worship is shown on the monitors on either side of the chancel and follows a traditional pattern of Christian Worship. It is printed out in this bulletin with large print bulletins available upon request. The service is also found, along with the chant melodies, in the front of the hymnal, with pages of hymns in the back. We celebrate Holy Communion on every Sunday and on most liturgical festival days. All communicant members of our sister congregations are invited to attend the Sacrament with us. Please fill out a registration card and hand it to the Usher. All others are urged to speak to Pastor before communing. **Important Message** For those whose medical conditions limit the consumption of alcohol, we are offering cups of non-alcoholic wine. These cups are located in the center of the individual communion cup trays. A cry room is available for parents with young Children. Harold Wahl, Pastor (708) DIVINE SERVICE Setting 1 Page 151 Lutheran Service Book Christians Live by Faith in Christ and Rejoice in the Promise of His Resurrection Cursed is the man who trusts in man, for all the strength of his flesh is like the grass that fades away (Jer. 17:5). The one who turns away from the Lord may have food and money and laugh for now, but he shall mourn and weep in the judgment (Luke 6:24 25). But the man who trusts in the LORD is blessed with all that he needs, like a tree planted by water. When heat comes, he survives (Jer. 17:7 8). For the Lord has come in the flesh to heal the people of all their diseases, to cleanse their spirits with forgiveness, and to preach the Gospel of the kingdom of God to the poor (Luke 6:18 20). As all of this is by way of His cross, it is solely by faith in the promise of His resurrection that Christians rejoice and leap for joy (Luke 6:21 23). If Christ has not been raised, our faith is in vain and we are most to be pitied (1 Cor. 15:14 19). C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. Old Testament Reading: Jeremiah 17:5 8 (ESV) A The Old Testament Reading for The Sixth Sunday after the Epiphany of Our Lord is from the 17 th chapter of The Prophecy of Jeremiah. 5 Thus says the LORD: Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart turns away from the LORD. 6 He is like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see any good come. He shall dwell in the parched places of the wilderness, in an uninhabited salt land. 7 Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose trust is the LORD. 8 He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit. Epistle Reading: 1 Corinthians 15:12 20 (ESV) A The Epistle Reading is from the 15 th chapter of St. Paul s First epistle to the Corinthians. 12 Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. 14 And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. 15 We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is

8 6 true that the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. 18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19 If in this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied. 20 But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence he will come to judge the living and the dead. 10 8 Prayer of the Church P As the prophet reminds us, blessed are those who trust in the Lord. So do we come this day with the concerns of our hearts and our prayers on behalf of all as they have need. P Blessed Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, You have delivered Your people through the blood of Your Son and have given us the new birth into a hope and life death cannot overcome. Grant to Your Church honesty in our preaching and love in our service to those who have not yet heard the Gospel. Lord, in Your mercy, C hear our prayer. P Blessed Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, You have given us Your pledge and promise that we shall not be alone. Guard Your people against the threats of the enemy and the persecution of a world still against You. Deliver all pastors, teachers, missionaries, deaconesses and other church workers from all that would hinder their service to us on Your behalf, and bestow upon them Your Spirit and His gifts for their faithful work. Lord, in Your mercy, C hear our prayer. P Blessed Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, You hold in Your hand all the might of man and though we struggle against the enemies of Your will, You have promised to make all things work together for Your

Bless our nation and those who lead us our president, Congress, judges and magistrates and enlighten them with Your Word, so that they would work in accordance with Your will and for the common good. Lord, in Your mercy, C hear our prayer. 9 P Blessed Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, You sent Your Son that we might have healing through His wounds. Be with the sick, the hospitalized, the aged, the infirm, the dying and the troubled in mind or heart Help them to know Your presence and Your peace in their afflictions, and grant them healing and relief as You will. Teach them contentment of heart, and keep them in faith to the day of Christ s coming. Lord, in Your mercy, C hear our prayer. P Blessed Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we are the blessed and chosen people of Your grace and favor. You have called us by Your Word and gathered us by Your Spirit before this altar. Grant to us repentance and faith, that we may receive this Sacrament for our benefit and so be transformed by this blessed communion and be made more Christ-like in faith and service. Lord, in Your mercy, C hear our prayer. P Blessed Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, though now we weep in the face of death, we rejoice to know the power of Christ and His resurrection. In this hope, we commend to You all the faithful who have died in Your faith and fear. Bring us with those who have fallen asleep in Christ to that blessed day when the dead shall be raised, when sin shall no more accuse, when death shall no more grieve and when we will live in Your presence forevermore. P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; for what had been hidden from before the foundation of the world You have made known to the nations in Your Son. In Him, being found in the substance of our mortal nature, You have manifested the fullness of Your glory. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: Sanctus

13 11 Prayer of Thanksgiving P Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross. Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen. The Words of Our Lord P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me. P In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. Proclamation of Christ P As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord s death until He comes. C Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. P O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess

14 12 Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray: The Lord s Prayer C Our father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Agnus Dei Distribution of Christ s Body and Blood In the Sacrament of the Altar, we receive the real, genuine body and blood of Jesus Christ, which hung on the cross and flowed from his veins. Participation in The Sacrament is limited to those who are active members in good standing in a congregation of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod or who have spoken personally to the pastor.

15 13 Members of other Christian denominations who are present may come forward to receive a blessing from the Pastor during the distribution. It is requested that you cross your arms over your chest to indicate that you desire this blessing. Scripture teaches that those who receive the blood to their harm. If you are not fully repentant, we ask that you refrain from receiving the Sacrament and speak with the Pastor. 18 NEWS UPDATE Turkey Soup after churh next Sunday on the 24 th Bring a desert to share. Beginning March 6 th there will be a discussion group on Facebook about LHM s People of the Passion Lenten Devotions. Each day s devotion will be posted to the group. You can make a comment or a thought for discussion on one of the posts. To search on Facebook the group is called Let s Discuss the Devotions. The address is Take a card and bring the item next Sunday to help restock the food pantry. Cards are located on the pantry door in the southwest corner of the parish hall. Food baskets are always getting delivered so please keep taking the cards. A meal only lasts for a few hours then you are hungry again. That is why the pantry is always running low. Gift cards and cash donations are welcome and are used to purchase perishable items, i.e. a $15 gift card from Aldi s can buy milk, eggs, bread and ground beef. Those who are in need are always very grateful. This is done on your behalf and in the name of our dear Lord, Jesus Christ! To help with distribution we could use grocery sized paper bags. The Kapelle from Concordia University Chicago will present their sacred choral program, Songs and Praises, at St. Paul s Lutheran Church & School, 8601 Harrison Ave. in Munster on Saturday, March 16 at 5:30 pm. Free admission. Folksongs and spirituals will be featured as well as Benedictus sit Deus by Mozart, Alles nur nach Gottes Willen by J.S. Bach, I Will Sing to the Lord by Carl Schalk, and Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me by Jonathan Kohrs. Conducted by Dr. Charles P.
