THE FIFTH SUNDAY IN LENT April 7, A. D. 2019

TO OUR GUESTS AND VISITORS Welcome!! We are glad to have you with us to worship the Triune God. May you be blessed by hearing God s Word today! Thank you for joining us for worship! Please come back soon! Ushers are here to assist you. If you need help or have a question, please ask them. Before you leave please sign our Guest Book as it is our permanent record and reminder of our guests. Our Order of Worship is shown on the monitors on either side of the chancel and follows a traditional pattern of Christian Worship. It is printed out in this bulletin with large print bulletins available upon request. The service is also found, along with the chant melodies, in the front of the hymnal, with pages of hymns in the back. We celebrate Holy Communion every Sunday and on most festival days of the liturgical calendar. All communicant members of our sister congregations are invited to attend the Sacrament with us. Please fill out a registration card and hand it to the Usher. All others are urged to speak to Pastor before communing. **Important Message** For those whose medical conditions limit the consumption of alcohol, we are offering cups of non-alcoholic wine. These cups are located in the center of the individual communion cup trays. A cry room is available for parents with young children. There are speakers and a window so you can continue to see and hear the worship service. The cry room is located behind the sanctuary on the left side.

1 St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church 508 N. Chicago Road Thornton, IL Voice & Fax: (708) Rev. Harold Wahl, Pastor (708) splcms.org DIVINE SERVICE Setting 1 Page 151 Lutheran Service Book God s Beloved Son Has Redeemed Us Our life and works apart from Christ, no matter how they may glitter to the eyes of the world, are ultimately rubbish and have no righteousness. Rather, in the scandalous cross of Jesus we find our righteousness alone through faith in Christ (Phil. 3:9). By such faith, we know him and the power of his resurrection (Phil. 3:10). For the same God who brought Israel out of Egypt, has done a new thing for us in Christ Jesus. He has sent his beloved Son into his vineyard to be killed by sinful men and to become the stone the builders rejected. Yet, the One rejected by men has become the cornerstone of His Church (Luke 20:17). Through the waters of Holy Baptism, he provides us daily refreshment in our earthly pilgrimage, a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert (Is. 43:19). Pre-Service Music: Ringing of the Bells Welcome Hymn of Invocation LSB 912, Christ Is Our Cornerstone Confession and Absolution Invocation The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism.

P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. 2 P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. Service of the Word The Introit Ps. 3:3 6; antiphon: Ps. 3:8 (ESV) P Salvation belongs to the LORD; C your blessing be on your people! P But you, O LORD, are a shield about me, C my glory, and the lifter of my head. P I cried aloud to the LORD, C and he answered me from his holy hill. P I lay down and slept; C I woke again, for the LORD sustained me. P I will not be afraid of many thousands of people C who have set themselves against me all around. C Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now, and will be forever. Amen.

3 P Salvation belongs to the LORD; C your blessing be on your people! Kyrie P In peace let us pray to the Lord. P For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all let us pray to the Lord. P For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise let us pray to the Lord P Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord. Hymn of Praise LSB 425, When I Survey the Wondrous Cross Salutation and Collect of the Day P The Lord be with you. P Let us pray. P Almighty God, by Your great goodness mercifully look upon Your people that we may be governed and preserved evermore in body and soul; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

4 Old Testament Reading: Isaiah 43:16 21 (ESV) A The Old Testament Reading for The Fifth Sunday in Lent is from the 43 rd chapter of the Prophecy of Isaiah. 16 Thus says the LORD, who makes a way in the sea, a path in the mighty waters, 17 who brings forth chariot and horse, army and warrior; they lie down, they cannot rise, they are extinguished, quenched like a wick: 18 Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. 19 Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. 20 The wild beasts will honor me, the jackals and the ostriches, for I give water in the wilderness, rivers in the desert, to give drink to my chosen people, 21 the people whom I formed for myself that they might declare my praise. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Epistle Reading: Philippians 3:8 14 (ESV) A The Epistle Reading is from the 3 rd chapter of St. Paul s epistle to the Philippians. 8 Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from

5 the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith 10 that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead. 12 Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. 13 Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Lenten Prayer Verse LSB 422, On My Heart Imprint Your Image The Holy Gospel: Luke 20:9 20 (ESV) P The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke the 20 th chapter. 9 And he began to tell the people this parable: A man planted a vineyard and let it out to tenants and went into another country for a long while. 10 When the time came, he sent a servant to the tenants, so that they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the

6 tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 11 And he sent another servant. But they also beat and treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed. 12 And he sent yet a third. This one also they wounded and cast out. 13 Then the owner of the vineyard said, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps they will respect him. 14 But when the tenants saw him, they said to themselves, This is the heir. Let us kill him, so that the inheritance may be ours. 15 And they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16 He will come and destroy those tenants and give the vineyard to others. When they heard this, they said, Surely not! 17 But he looked directly at them and said, What then is this that is written: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone? 18 Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, and when it falls on anyone, it will crush him. 19 The scribes and the chief priests sought to lay hands on him at that very hour, for they perceived that he had told this parable against them, but they feared the people. 20 So they watched him and sent spies, who pretended to be sincere, that they might catch him in something he said, so as to deliver him up to the authority and jurisdiction of the governor. P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ. Hymn of the Day LSB 427, In the cross of Christ I Glory Sermon Text: Luke 20:9 20 Sermon Theme: Surely Not! The Apostles Creed C I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian

7 Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Gathering of Tithes & Offerings and Record of Fellowship Musical Offering: Beneath the Cross of Jesus--Hobby Offertory Prayer of the Church P Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. P Christ is our cornerstone, O Lord, and the rock upon which all our hopes rest. Bring to completion all that You have begun in us, and grant to us all things needful and profitable for our salvation, that we might be the people in whom You delight and through whom You show forth Your mercy. Lord, in Your mercy, C hear our prayer. P Help us to press on, O Lord, against all enemies and strive for the goal, the upward call in Christ, our Savior. We rejoice that we are not alone but surrounded by a great host of saints and fellow citizens of

8 heaven, here and throughout the world. Bless our unity in doctrine and faith, and help us work as partners in Christ for the advancement of His kingdom. Lord, in Your mercy, C hear our prayer. P Guard us, O Lord, against all those who cause strife, whose acts of violence and terror threaten people everywhere, and who seek to destroy order and peace. Bless the service men and women who defend us at home and abroad and all police, firefighters and emergency personnel who work on our behalf. Lord, in Your mercy, C hear our prayer. P Make our homes places of blessing and love, O Lord, that husbands and wives may honor the promises of their marriage and faithfully care for the children You have given them. Help us to honor Your gift of life from its natural beginning to its natural end. Lord, in Your mercy, C hear our prayer. P Teach us to love You above all things, O Lord, lest we gain possessions and lose our salvation. Lead us to use wisely and for Your will and purpose all the things of this life, and accept with our gratitude the tithes and offerings we bring, tokens of our faith and symbols of our trust in You to give us all that we need. Lord, in Your mercy, C hear our prayer. P Prepare our hearts, O Lord, to receive for our benefit the blessed food of Christ s body and blood in this Holy Sacrament. Unite us in faith, that this Holy Communion may show forth our common faith and equip us to live together in love as You have loved us and forgiven all our sins. Lord, in Your mercy, C hear our prayer. Special Intercessory Prayers - from the pink colored insert... P Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. P All these things we pray, O Lord, in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord, with whom You reign, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, one God, now and forevermore C Amen.

9 Service of the Sacrament Preface P The Lord be with you. P Lift up your hearts. P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who overcame the assaults of the devil and gave His life as a ransom for many that with cleansed hearts we might be prepared joyfully to celebrate the paschal feast in sincerity and truth. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: Sanctus

10 Prayer of Thanksgiving P Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross. Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen. The Words of Our Lord P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me. P In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. Proclamation of Christ P As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord s death until He comes. C Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. P O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess

11 Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray: The Lord s Prayer C Our father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Pax Domini P The peace of the Lord be with you always. Agnus Dei Distribution of Christ s Body and Blood In the Sacrament of the Altar, we receive the real, genuine body and blood of Jesus Christ, which hung on the cross and flowed from his veins. Participation in The Sacrament limited to those who are active members in good standing in a congregation of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod or who have spoken personally to the pastor.

12 Members of other Christian denominations who are present may come forward to receive a blessing from the Pastor during the distribution. It is requested that you cross your arms over your chest to indicate that you desire this blessing. Music During Distribution LSB 437, Alas! And Did My Savior Bleed LSB 629, What Is This Bread? Depart T in peace. C Amen. Post-Communion Canticle Nunc Dimittis Post-Communion Collect P Let us pray.

13 P Gracious God, our heavenly Father, You have given us a foretaste of the feast to come in the Holy Supper of Your Son s body and blood. Keep us firm in the true faith throughout our days of pilgrimage that, on the day of His coming, we may, together with all Your saints, celebrate the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom which has no end; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Benediction P The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and T give you peace.
