1 St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church 508 N. Chicago Road Thornton, IL Voice & Fax: (708) Rev. Harold Wahl, Pastor (708) DIVINE SERVICE Setting 1 Page 151 Lutheran Service Book The Divine Glory Is Manifested in the Signs of Christ When Jesus turned water into wine at the wedding in Cana, it was the first of His signs, by which He manifested His glory (John 2:11). It pointed to His coming hour, when He was lifted up on the Cross for the forgiveness of sins and the life of the world (John 2:4; 12:23 32). The glory of the cross is incomprehensible apart from the Word and Spirit of God, but disciples of Jesus recognize that glory in the signs of His Gospel, and so they believe in Him. Jesus does not wait for His disciples to discover Him on their own, but He seeks out the forsaken and the desolate and unites them to Himself. He adorns them with His own beautiful righteousness and delights in them as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride (Is. 62:4 5). Purified by the washing of water with His Word in Holy Baptism, His disciples confess that Jesus is Lord, and they return thanks to Him in the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 12:3), as they drink the good wine that He pours out for them, which is the new testament in His blood. Pre-Service Music Ringing of the Bells Welcome Hymn of Invocation Breathed My Name (sung to the familiar tune of Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee ) God the Father, You have known me from creation of the earth, Searched me, Lord, completely knowing of the moment of my birth, Fashion d me within my mother, with Your hands You knitted me, Breathed into my life Your breath a living soul I came to be.

Dearest Jesus, You have known me on the cross of Calvary, Searched my soul completely saving, breath d your last in place of me, Through the water and the Spirit washed away my life of sin, Crucified together with You, Lord in me You breathe again. 2 Holy Spirit, You have known me all my days before they came, Nowhere can I flee Your presence in the womb You knew my name, By your power, through Your working, You have breathed my name again That through faith it shall be written in the book of life, in heav n. Invocation The sign of the cross T may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism. P In the name of the Father and T of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. Confession and Absolution P And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh, on your sons and your daughters, your young men and old, even on My male servants and My female servants. And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. C Merciful Father and Maker of all, we confess that from youth until our last breath every intention of our hearts is evil. In sinfulness we were conceived, and apart from You we can do no good thing. We have turned aside from Your Word and Your grace to worship our own desires instead. We have not respected life as Your gift or treated our neighbors as treasures. We deserve the death we have brought upon ourselves. In Your steadfast compassion, forgive our iniquity. Remember us as those for whom Your dear Son Jesus atoned. Bring forth in us repentance and trust that Your humble creatures may be saved, according to the favor of Your name. Amen. P I the Lord do not change, says our God. Therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed. He has given Himself in His Son Jesus, Who became incarnate and was crucified, that in His resurrection all humankind would be redeemed. In the stead and by the command

of our Lord Jesus Christ, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. Service of the Word 3 The Introit Psalm 90:1-4, P Lord, you have been our dwelling place C in all generations. P Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, C from everlasting to everlasting you are God. P You return man to dust C and say, Return, O children of man! P For a thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday when it is past, C or as a watch in the night. P So teach us to number our days C that we may get a heart of wisdom. P Return, O Lord! How long? C Have pity on your servants! P Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, C that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. P Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, C and for as many years as we have seen evil. P Let your work be shown to your servants, C and your glorious power to their children. P Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us; C yes, establish the work of our hands. C Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now, and will be forever. Amen. Kyrie P In peace let us pray to the Lord.

P For the peace from above and for our salvation let us pray to the Lord. 4 P For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all let us pray to the Lord. P For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise let us pray to the Lord P Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord. Hymn of Praise The Lord, My God, Be Praised (sung to the familiar tune of Now Thank We All Our God ) The Lord, my God, be praised, My light, my life from heaven; My maker, who to me Has soul and body given; My Father, who will shield And keep me day by day And make each moment yield New blessings on my way. The Lord, my God, be praised. My trust, my life from heaven, The Father s own dear Son, Whose life for me was given, Who for my sin atoned With His most precious blood And gives to me by faith The highest heav n-ly good. The Lord, my God, be praised, My hope, my life from heaven, The Spirit, whom the Son In love to me has given. His grace revives my heart And gives my spirit pow r. Help, comfort, and support In sorrow s gloomy hour.

Salutation and Collect of the Day P The Lord be with you. 5 P Let us pray. P Gracious God, our Heavenly Father, Your mercy attends us all our days. Be our strength and support amid the wearisome changes of this world, and at life s end grant us Your promised rest and the full joys of Your salvation, through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Old Testament Reading: Isaiah 46:3-4, 8-10 (ESV) A The Old Testament Reading for The Sanctity of Human Life Sunday is from the 46 th chapter of the Prophecy of Isaiah. Listen to me, O house of Jacob, all the remnant of the house of Israel, who have been borne by me from before your birth, carried from the womb; even to your old age I am he, and to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear; I will carry and will save. Remember this and stand firm, recall it to mind, you transgressors, remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose.. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Epistle Reading: James 1:17-27 (ESV) A The Reading is from the 1 st chapter of the General Epistle of James. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.

6 Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing. If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person s religion is worthless. Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Alleluia Verse The Holy Gospel: John 1:1-5, 9-14 (ESV) P The Holy Gospel according to St. John the 1 st chapter. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the

7 world did not know him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. P This is the Gospel of the Lord. Hymn of the Day LSB 733, O God, Our Help in Ages Past Sermon Text: Isaiah 46:3-4, 8-10 (ESV) Sermon Theme: From Age to Age, the Same The Nicene Creed C I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day he rose again according to the scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And he will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. 10 8 Offertory LSB 523, O Word of God Incarnate Prayer of the Church P Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. P For all the children of God, born into His own household by baptismal grace to share in His Son s inheritance, that we may rejoice to speak His truth and delight to show His love, until every human being has life and has it to the full, let us pray to the Lord: C Lord, have mercy. P For women with child and the little ones they carry, for newborns and infants, that our Maker and Father lends us His courage, to protect them from every danger, and His compassion, to provide for all their needs, while gathering them into His family, let us pray to the Lord: C Lord, have mercy. P For those who grieve pregnancy loss or struggle under infertility, that our Savior comforts them with the peace of His forgiving care and the promise of resurrection and reward, and that the body of Christ shares their sorrows and their joys, let us pray to the Lord: C Lord, have mercy. P For children awaiting adoption, and for little ones held in laboratories or scheduled for abortion, that Almighty God spares their lives, and that the Holy Spirit moves us to open our ears and our mouths, our hearts and hands and homes, to embrace them, let us pray to the Lord: C Lord, have mercy. P For parents and other authorities, that in our homes and communities they gently and relentlessly safeguard the sacredness with which our Creator has invested every human life, and that they uphold especially the least of these even as He enfolds each of us in His grace, let us pray to the Lord: C Lord, have mercy. P For the aged and the infirm, for the abandoned and the bereaved, and for those beset with the guilt of taking part in ending life, that our Lord delivers them out of their sufferings and heals them with

9 forgiveness for their sins and everlasting restoration for their bodies, let us pray to the Lord: C Lord, have mercy. P For celebrating the blessings of abundant life, we give thanks and praise to God Who has affirmed how precious they are by granting length of days and rich mercies, and that together we commit ourselves evermore into His goodness, let us pray to the Lord: C Lord, have mercy. Special Intercessory Prayers - from orange colored insert... P Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. P Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend ourselves and all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy, through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. C Amen. Service of the Sacrament Preface P The Lord be with you. P Lift up your hearts. P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; for what had been hidden from before the foundation of the world You have made known to the nations in Your Son. In Him, being found in the substance of our

10 mortal nature, You have manifested the fullness of Your glory. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: Sanctus Prayer of Thanksgiving P: Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross. Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen.

11 The Words of Our Lord P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me. P In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. Proclamation of Christ P As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord s death until He comes. C Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. P O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the omb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray: The Lord s Prayer C Our father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen Pax Domini P The peace of the Lord be with you always. Agnus Dei
