TO OUR GUESTS AND VISITORS Welcome!! We are glad to have you with us to worship the Triune God. May you be blessed by hearing God s Word today! Thank you for joining us for worship! Please come back soon! Ushers are here to assist you. If you need help or have a question, please ask them. Before you leave please sign our Guest Book as it is our permanent record and reminder of our guests. Our Order of Worship is shown on the monitors on either side of the chancel and follows a traditional pattern of Christian Worship. It is printed out in this bulletin with large print bulletins available upon request. The service is also found, along with the chant melodies, in the front of the hymnal, with pages of hymns in the back. We celebrate Holy Communion every Sunday and on most festival days of the liturgical calendar. All communicant members of our sister congregations are invited to attend the Sacrament with us. Please fill out a registration card and hand it to the Usher. All others are urged to speak to Pastor before communing. **Important Message** For those whose medical conditions limit the consumption of alcohol, we are offering cups of non-alcoholic wine. These cups are located in the center of the individual communion cup trays. A cry room is available for parents with young children. There are speakers and a window so you can continue to see and hear the worship service. The cry room is located behind the sanctuary on the left side.

1 St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church 508 N. Chicago Road Thornton, IL Voice & Fax: (708) Rev. Harold Wahl, Pastor (708) splcms.org DIVINE SERVICE Setting 1 Page 151 Lutheran Service Book The Triune God Opens Heaven to You in Holy Baptism The Baptism of our Lord is an Epiphany of the one true God in the flesh and blood of Jesus Christ. In divine mercy, He takes His place with sinners and takes their sin upon Himself. When all the people were baptized, Jesus submitted Himself to a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins (Luke 3:21). He had no sins of His own, but He took the sins of the world upon Himself and so was baptized into His own death. Therefore, when you pass through the waters, He is with you (Is. 43:2). He created you for His glory, and He has redeemed you with His blood, that you may be His own and live with Him in His Kingdom (Is. 43:1, 7). As you are baptized with a baptism like His, so also are you united with Him in His death and resurrection that you might walk in newness of life (Rom. 6:4). For all who are baptized into Christ Jesus receive His anointing of the Holy Spirit and are named by His Father as beloved and well-pleasing sons and daughters. 4 LSB page 268, Holy Baptism 2 The Sacrament of Holy Baptism for Coral Renee Middleton Born: October 17, 2018 Infant daughter of William Middleton and Lydia Marimar Garcia Sponsors: Travis Thomas Middleton, Luz Milagros Sanfeliz and Jeraldine Elliott Invocation The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism. P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. Baptismal Address P Dearly beloved, Christ our Lord says in the last chapter of Matthew, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." In the last chapter of Mark our Lord promises, "Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved." And the apostle Peter has written, "Baptism now saves you." The Word of God also teaches that we are all conceived and born sinful and are under the power of the devil until Christ claims us as His own. We would be lost forever unless delivered from sin, death, and everlasting condemnation. But the Father of all mercy and grace has sent His Son Jesus Christ, who atoned for the sin of the whole world, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. Giving of the Name P How is this child to be named?

R Coral Renee Middleton Sign of the Cross 3 The pastor makes the sign of the holy cross upon the forehead and heart of each candidate while saying: P Coral Renee Middleton, receive the sign of the holy cross both upon your T forehead and upon your T heart to mark you as one redeemed by Jesus Christ the crucified. Baptismal Prayer P Let us pray. P Almighty and eternal God, according to Your strict judgment You condemned the unbelieving world through the flood, yet according to Your great mercy You preserved believing Noah and his family, eight souls in all. You drowned hard-hearted Pharaoh and all his host in the Red Sea, yet led Your people Israel through the water on dry ground, foreshadowing this washing of Your Holy Baptism. Through the Baptism in the Jordan of Your beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, You sanctified and instituted all waters to be a blessed flood and a lavish washing away of sin. We pray that You would behold Coral Renee Middleton to Your boundless mercy and bless her with true faith by the Holy Spirit, that through this saving flood all sin in her which has been inherited from Adam and which she herself has committed since, would be drowned and die. Grant that she be kept safe and secure in the holy ark of the Christian Church, being separated from the multitude of unbelievers and serving Your name at all times with a fervent spirit and a joyful hope, so that, with all believers in Your promise, she would be declared worthy of eternal life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Address to Sponsors P From ancient times the Church has observed the custom of appointing sponsors for baptismal candidates and catechumens. In the Evangelical Lutheran Church sponsors are to confess the faith expressed in the Apostles' Creed and taught in the Small Catechism. They are, whenever possible, to witness the Baptism of those they sponsor. They are to pray for them, support them in their ongoing instruction and nurture in the Christian faith, and encourage them

4 toward the faithful reception of the Lord's Supper. They are at all times to be examples to them of the holy life of faith in Christ and love for the neighbor. P Is it your intention to serve Coral Renee Middleton as sponsors in the Christian faith? R Yes, with the help of God. P God enable you both to will and to do this faithful and loving work and with His grace fulfill what we are unable to do. Baptismal Gospel Mark 10:13-16 (NKJV) P Hear the Holy Gospel according to St. Mark. They brought young children to [Jesus] that He might touch them; but the disciples rebuked those who brought them. But when Jesus saw it, He was greatly displeased and said to them, "Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of God. Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it." And He took them up in His arms, put His hands on them, and blessed them. P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. The Lord s Prayer The pastor places his hands on the head(s) of the candidate(s), and the congregation joins in praying: C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Blessing P The Lord preserve your coming in and your going out from this time forth and even T forevermore.

Renouncement of the Devil P Coral Renee Middleton, do you renounce the devil? C Yes, I renounce him. P Do you renounce all his works? C Yes, I renounce them. P Do you renounce all his ways? C Yes, I renounce them. 5 Confession of Faith The Apostles Creed P Do you believe in God, the Father Almighty? C Yes, I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. P Do you believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son? C Yes, I believe Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence he will come to judge the living and the dead. P Do you believe in the Holy Spirit? C Yes, I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. The Baptism P Do you desire to have Coral Renee Middleton baptized? R Yes, we do. The pastor pours water three times on the head of the candidate while saying: P Coral Renee Middleton, I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

6 Blessing of the Newly Baptized P The almighty God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given you the new birth of water and of the Spirit and has forgiven you all your sins, strengthen you with His grace to life T everlasting. Presentation of the White Garment The pastor may place a while garment on the newly baptized while saying: P Receive this white garment to show that you have been clothed with the robe of Christ's righteousness that covers all your sin. So shall you stand without fear before the judgment seat of Christ to receive the inheritance prepared for you before the foundation of the world. Presentation of the Baptismal Candle The pastor may light a baptismal candle from the paschal candle and give it to the newly baptized while saying: P Receive this burning light to show that you have received Christ who is the Light of the world. Live always in the light of Christ, and be ever watchful for His coming, that you may meet Him with joy and enter with him into the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which shall have no end. The Welcome A In Holy Baptism God the Father has made you a member of His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, and an heir with us of all the treasures of heaven in the one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We receive you in Jesus' name as our sister in Christ, that together we might hear His Word, receive His gifts, and proclaim the praises of Him who called us out of darkness into His marvelous light. We welcome you in the name of the Lord. Post-Baptismal Prayer P Let us pray. P Almighty and most merciful God and Father, we thank and praise You that You graciously preserve and enlarge Your family and have granted Coral Renee Middleton the new birth in Holy Baptism and made her a member of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, and an heir of Your heavenly kingdom. We humbly implore You that, as she has now become Your child, You would keep her in his baptismal grace,

7 that according to Your good pleasure she may faithfully grow to lead a godly life to the praise and honor of Your holy name and finally, with all Your saints, obtain the promised inheritance in heaven; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. The Peace P Peace T be with you. Baptismal Hymn LSB 593, "See This Wonder in the Making Confession and Absolution P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. Service of the Word

8 The Introit Psalm 2:7-11; 12c; antiphon Isaiah 42:1a P Behold my servant, whom I uphold, C my chosen, in whom my soul delights. P I will tell of the decree: C The LORD said to me, "You are my Son; today I have begotten you. P Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, C and the ends of the earth your possession. P You shall break them with a rod of iron C and dash them in pieces like a potter s vessel." P Now therefore, O kings, be wise; C be warned, O rulers of the earth. P Serve the LORD with fear, C and rejoice with trembling, P for his wrath is quickly kindled. C Blessèd are all who take refuge in him. C Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now, and will be forever. Amen. P Behold my servant, whom I uphold, C my chosen, in whom my soul delights. Kyrie P In peace let us pray to the Lord. P For the peace from above and for our salvation let us pray to the Lord. P For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all let us pray to the Lord.

P For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise let us pray to the Lord 9 P Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord. Salutation and Collect of the Day P The Lord be with you. P Let us pray. P Father in heaven, at the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River You proclaimed Him Your beloved Son and anointed Him with the Holy Spirit. Make all who are baptized in His name faithful in their calling as Your children and inheritors with Him of everlasting life; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Old Testament Reading: Isaiah 43:1 7 (ESV) A The Old Testament Reading for The Baptism of our Lord is from the 43 rd chapter of the Prophecy of Isaiah. 1 But now thus says the LORD, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. 2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned,

10 and the flame shall not consume you. 3 For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. I give Egypt as your ransom, Cush and Seba in exchange for you. 4 Because you are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you, I give men in return for you, peoples in exchange for your life. 5 Fear not, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and from the west I will gather you. 6 I will say to the north, Give up, and to the south, Do not withhold; bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the end of the earth, 7 everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God Epistle Reading: Romans 6:1 11 (ESV) A The Epistle Reading is from the 6th chapter of the St. Paul s epistle to the Romans. 1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. 7 For one who has died has been set free from sin. 8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 We know that Christ

11 being raised from the dead will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10 For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. 11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Alleluia The Holy Gospel: Matthew 3:13 17 (ESV) P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew the 3 rd chapter. 13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. 14 John would have prevented him, saying, I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me? 15 But Jesus answered him, Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he consented. 16 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; 17 and behold, a voice from heaven said, This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased. P This is the Gospel of the Lord. Hymn of the Day LSB 405, To Jordan s River Came Our Lord

12 Sermon Text: Matthew 3:13 17 (ESV) Sermon: Refreshed Treasure Your Baptism Sung Response (sung to the melody of I Know that My Redeemer Lives ) I am baptized-a blessed day On which my sins were washed away, When heaven's grace upon me smiled And I became God's holy child. 15 13 Prayer of the Church P Created in Your image, formed for Your glory, called by Your name and washed clean in Baptism, we come this day as the people of Your promise with the intercessions and prayers for all people as they have need. P Blessed Lord, You wonderfully foreshadowed the promise of Baptism in the rescue of Noah from the flood, in the passing of Your people through the Red Sea, and in the ceremonial washings of Your law. In Christ and by His Baptism, You have kept Your Word and made Baptism to be the water of new life. Give us Your Holy Spirit, that we may become the new and holy people You have declared us to be. Lord, in Your mercy, C hear our prayer. P Holy God, the nations still live in darkness and in the despair of death. Raise up prophets who will address them with Your Word and truth, and accompany this preaching with Your Holy Spirit so that those who hear may believe. Bring to a good end all the mission work, through our own congregation here, in our district and in every place where our Synod is at work to share the Gospel. Lord, in Your mercy, C hear our prayer. P Lord of all power, all the might of man is nothing before You. We pray You to place Your blessing on all those who serve Your people in government, the police, firefighters, emergency medical personnel, disaster relief and the armed forces. Give them good and honest hearts for their service, and lead them by Your Word to know and do what is good and right for all people and in accordance with Your will. Lord, in Your mercy, C hear our prayer. P Lord of compassion and mercy, no suffering passes before You unnoticed. Give to the sick, those hospitalized, those recuperating from illness, those in treatment and those troubled in mind and heart both Your healing presence and Your healing peace. Be their companion in solitude, their healing in affliction, their deliverer from trouble and their life in death. Lord, in Your mercy, C hear our prayer.

14 P Loving Father, we come, as Your Son has bidden us, to receive at this altar His gift of His flesh for the life of the world and His blood as the cup of our salvation. Help us to commune this day in good conscience, discerning Christ s body in this Eucharist and repenting of our sins, that we may keep in faithful hearts and with holy lives what we receive upon our lips this day. Lord, in Your mercy, C hear our prayer. Special Intercessory Prayers - from orange colored insert... P Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. P Into Your hands, O almighty and everlasting God, do we commend all for whom we pray this day, trusting in Your mercy, through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, to whom be glory now and forever. Service of the Sacrament Preface P The Lord be with you. P Lift up your hearts. P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; for what had been hidden from before the foundation of the world You have made known to the nations in Your Son. In Him, being found in the substance of our mortal nature, You have manifested the fullness of Your glory.

15 Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: Sanctus Prayer of Thanksgiving P Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross. Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. The Words of Our Lord P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the

16 disciples and said: Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me. P In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. Proclamation of Christ P As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord s death until He comes. Come, Lord Jesus. P O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. Pax Domini P The peace of the Lord be with you always. Agnus Dei

We do love others because He first loved us (1 John 4:19). We speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves (Proverbs 31:8) because when we had no voice, no standing, no defense, Jesus stepped in on our behalf. There is no way we can be less loving. Christian Life Resources A Life Quote from Lutherans For Life When I feel that I have become cool and joyless in prayer because of other tasks or thoughts (for the flesh and the devil always impede and obstruct prayer), I take my little psalter, hurry to my room, or, if it be the day and hour for it, to the church where a congregation is assembled and, as time permits, I say quietly to myself and word-for-word the Ten Commandments, the Creed, and, if I have time, some words of Christ or of Paul, or some psalms, just as a child might do.
