Dioceses across the country, and especially the Archdiocese of Newark, have instituted compassionate outreach to victims and support services, training and background checks for staff and volunteers, training for children and youth, codes of conduct, reporting requirements to civil authorities, independent Review Boards to investigate allegations and recommend actions under Canon law for offenders, as well as other initiatives. To date, the Catholic Church is the only youth-serving organization in the country private or public -- to undertake such a comprehensive program to create and promulgate safe environments for children and young people. Independent auditors from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops have found the Archdiocese of Newark to be fully compliant with the requirements of the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People in every year since audits began in For a listing of the current sessions of Protecting God's Children, or to learn more about the Archdiocese's safe environment policies and procedures, visit the Archdiocese of Newark website at Sunday Collection The following is the breakdown and total for Sunday, December 27/28, 2014 and for Sunday, January 3/4, 2015: Dec 27 5:30 PM $1,166 7 PM $225 Dec 28 8 AM $ AM $ PM $ 1,198 Total Giving $3,948 Jan 3 5:30 PM $693 7 PM $182 Jan 4 8 AM $ AM $ PM $ 863 Total Giving $3,009 Contribute to The Bulletin Send your photos of St Anne's Ministry and parish events to parishoffice@stannesjc.org. 5 POVERTY AWARENESS MONTH The Most Vulnerable Among us By Nick Leeper Social Justice Intern Many people assume that poverty is a self-inflicted status. Some think that laziness and selfishness on behalf of the afflicted are at the core of poverty's perpetuation. They believe that, despite exterior efforts to help alleviate poverty, the main cause takes root in human weakness, specifically the poor's own human weakness not their own. In fact, poverty primarily afflicts those of us who are the most vulnerable and cannot make these choices to be lazy or selfish. Poverty severely impacts the children and the elderly, both who are our most vulnerable members of society. Poverty typically occurs, not out of laziness, but because of vulnerability and inaccessibility. Many children live in poverty today in the United States. In 2012, 22% of all children lived in poverty in the nation. Look around at all the children that go to Mass here. Now imagine that 1 in every 5 of those kids lived in poverty. That's the image that defines the state of our nation's children. Some may blame the parents for being lazy and allowing their kids to suffer in poverty, but the fact is that there are more children in poverty today than there are families in poverty. 12% of families in the United States live in poverty but 22% of children live in poverty. The rate of child poverty is almost double that of family, or adult, poverty. This fact highlights that vulnerability, when they are orphaned, uncared for, uneducated, not nurtured or homeless, is the primary cause of child poverty. The rate of child homelessness, a sign of their vulnerability, is currently increasing signalling that our children's security is continually being threatened. In 2012, the National Center on Family Homelessness found that 1.6m children experience homelessness in a year. But in 2014, the same group discovered that 2.5m children go without a home annually. The number increased by one million in the past two years. The increasing rate of homeless children propels the cycle of poverty among the least vulnerable in our society. There is a sizable population of seniors who currently live in poverty today in the country. According to the Supplemental Poverty Measure, which accounts for expenses such as the rising costs of health care, places the senior poverty rate at an astounding 14.8%. The elderly are also vulnerable members of our society who cannot be blamed for being lazy. In fact, if some government programs did not exist the poverty rate for seniors would be outrageous. Without Social Security 55% of senior citizens would be in poverty. Imagine your grandma and grandpa, one would be provided for and the other would have to choose between eating and paying for their medical bills. Poverty afflicts the most vulnerable in our society the most. We as Catholics are called to work for and love our children and our elders. Going Further Sign up for alerts from Poverty USA today and learn how to take action to protect the vulnerable: tiny.cc/povertyusa The Gift of a Mass Adapted from North County Catholic On occasion, someone will arrive at the rectory and ask, How much does it cost to buy a Mass?" Particularly at the time a loved one dies, individuals will approach the Church to have a Mass said for the deceased. Sometimes at Mass, the priest will announce who the Mass is for. Historically, the Mass offering or Mass stipend, had its origin within the offertory of the Mass, during which the faithful offered primarily the bread and wine for the sacrifice, as well as other natural gifts, for the needs of the poor and for the sustenance of the Church's ministers. In this way, the offering was uniquely united with the Eucharistic celebration itself. From the Middle Ages through the present day, the Mass offering has become almost exclusively monetary. By their nature, Mass offerings bind the faithful more closely to the sacrifice of Christ, to the work of the Church's minister in carrying out the corporal and spiritual works of mercy, in solidarity with one's brothers and sisters in the family of all. So that this kind of awareness may always be preserved, canonical norms have been established through the centuries. Any priest, in accordance with the approved custom of the Church, may accept an offering to apply a certain Mass for a specific intention. The priest is not to accept more intentions than what can be satisfied in one year. The offering for a Mass intention is normally $10. Separate Masses must be applied for the intention for each of which an offering and has been made and accepted. However, by way of exception, a priest may celebrate several intentions at one time. READING SUGGESTION OUR CHURCH Chalice and Paten are prepared on the credence table before Mass begins. Rather than using the term stipend, one should keep in mind that he/she is making a free will offering to the priest for a special intention, not purchasing a Mass. It should also be remembered that when a priest celebrates the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass the spiritual benefits are extended to the whole community and not merely to the donor. Thus, a more appropriate phraseology in the general intercessions is, "for he/she who is being remembered in a special way at this Mass". However, the mentioning of the intention as an intercession is not necessary in order for the intention to be considered satisfied. Keeping in mind one is not purchasing a Mass, the term to be used to denote a stipend is Mass offering. There is no greater gift than to offer the Mass for a departed loved one, for someone's particular need, or for a special intention. Going Further To offer the gift of a Mass, please contact your parish office. The Challenge of Choosing Jesus Misfit, By Chris Durso Zondervan, April 2011 In Misfit: Dealing with Our God- Given Discomfort, Chris Durso talks about the challenges that come with choosing Jesus. Christianity isn't always an easy path, and we have to do more than just choose Jesus, we have to live our Christianity out. Choosing Christianity might not always be popular and it may not be easy, but it's worth fighting for and it's worth believing. When you push through doubt, fear, and obstacles to let God use you as his vessel, it often means being a misfit like Jesus was. Durso explains what it is like to be a misfit, a world changer, and a believer that's going against the secular grain. Dare to break the mold. Be a misfit like Jesus was and you can change the world around you. Durso offers tools to push forward, asks the reader riveting questions at the end of each chapter, and explains what can happen if we cast aside our fears and get out of our own way to unleash our true potential in Christ. Misfit: Dealing with Our God-Given discomfort is available on paperback or Kindle starting at $5.50 at amzn.com/
