LOST PROPERTY There seems to be an incredible amount of plates and kitchen items that don t belong to the church. Can you please check on the lost property table if anything belongs to you. Any unclaimed items will be donated to the White Elephant Stall at the May Fete. We need donations for Mother's Day hampers: chocolates, gourmet items, champagne, gift cards, luxury bath products etc. Baskets will be welcome too.

3 May fair 6 May The fete committee has requested the following items: We need clean glass jars, please. Labels removed, for the jams and pickles ladies (no bigger than 375ml) Could members please make plant cuttings for the plant stall. We need donations for Mother's Day hampers: chocolates, gourmet items, champagne, gift cards, luxury bath products etc. Baskets will be welcome too. Donations for the White Elephant stall- to be delivered to church no earlier than Thursday 4 May. The back hall is rented out on a permanent basis and we have no storage space available. No clothes, mattresses, electrical goods or entertainment units. All items must be saleable, and in good condition. This includes pre-loved books. Thanks in advance. 8 FINDING LAZARUS In our Bible readings at the moment we are moving through Luke s gospel, following Jesus as he heads towards Jerusalem and all that he anticipates there. Along the way he does lots of teaching, using memorable and powerful short stories (parables). This week we have the story of a rich man, and a man who lay at his gate who, unusually in Jesus parables, is given a name: Lazarus. This is a powerful story, in which the fortunes of the rich man and the one who the rich man ignored are reversed after their deaths. In a world where a great chasm exists between the rich and the poor, this is a story well designed to shake our complacency, and reinforce that God has a particular place and concern for those who are now poor we might recall that Luke s version of the beatitudes includes Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. Luke 6: Jesus is makes a strong case that many who are currently poor and outcast have a place in the kingdom of God, and we need to ensure that all are welcome. Last week we heard Jesus defend his reputation of eating with outcasts and sinners by telling the stories of the lost sheep, the lost coin, and most powerfully of all, the prodigal son who is welcomed back by his father with loving, open arms. Similar themes are found in this week s story: Lazarus may have been lost and ignored by the rich man and so many others, but God will find him - he will be welcomed in Abraham s open arms, and treated as one of Abraham s true family.
