OCTOBER 2015, ISSUE 10 OCTOBER 2015 ISSUE 10 crown Church picnic and Brooksie Way C rown members did a fantastic job handing out water to thousands of thirsty Brooksie Way marathon runners on Sunday, September 27. This is a huge community event and it was great to have Crown of Life Church participate. The weather was perfect and we all had fun. There was a potluck picnic on the church lawn following the race and an outdoor worship service with singing and live guitar music by Pastor Fischer, a children s message by our prechool teacher, Mary Tessmer and a praise service led by Jim Leinhos. The Lord Gives shepherds for his sheep G od wants us to believe His wonderful Gospel. The devil doesn t. The unbelieving people of the world want us to join them in their skepticism and apathy. Admittedly, our own sinful nature struggles against faith and all the ways of God. Therefore, our good Lord gives aid and support to our weak faith. One of the several ways in which God helps our weak faith is by raising up and sending out pastors able to teach us His Word. As shepherds lead their sheep to feed in green pasture, so our pastors lead us, God s sheep, to feed our faith in the Word of God. The Lord requires pastors be able to teach. From our pastors teaching, we learn the whole counsel of God: His instruction for our life, His guidance for our families, and His insight for our worldview. But God s greatest concern is that we believe. So His greatest desire is that we hear the wonderful gospel from our pastor, the called and ordained servant of Christ. God increases our faith as we hear our pastor, in the stead of Christ, tell us I forgive you all your sins. Reproduced from Portals of Prayer 2015
WHO S WHO AT CROWN Pastor Fischer on left Pastor, Choir Director, and musician P astor Thomas Fischer is a man we rarely see at Crown of Life but he is responsible for the beautiful music we hear at our church. Not many of us at Crown have had the opportunity to meet him but did you know is an accomplished composer, pianist, organist, guitarist, and vocalist. In addition to helping us here at Crown, he is also Senior Pastor at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Rochester Hills and founder of Goodlife Community Partnership in Rochester as well. The purpose of Goodlife is to make life better for the greater Rochester area and surrounding communities. Pastor Fischer began his pastoral career in 1983 at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis and received his Master of Science in Evangelism, church growth, and youth ministries at Central Michigan University in Throughout his career he has served as Pastor and Associate Pastor at several churches in Michigan and Nebraska. Meet Larry Bellore M y name is Larry Bellore and I'm 69 years old. Most of you will recognize me as one of the Ushers. I have been a member of Crown for over 25 years. During that time I served on many committees but always enjoyed being an Usher. I have been married 44 years to my lovely wife, Liz. We have a wonderful son named Aaron. Liz and I are proud grandparents of his two boys, Donovan and Mason. Over the last few years we have cared for the boys a few days a week at their home. In 1965, I was drafted and served for 2 years in the Army. I have an associates degree in marketing and retired from Comerica Bank 8 years ago with 44 years of service. I enjoy bowling, golfing and putting together jig saw puzzles. Each one is thousand pieces or more!
CROWN JEWELS WOMEN S MINISTRY Crown Jewels Report T he Crown Jewels started their August event at the Golden Eagle Bar and Grill, which was followed by a perfect night for a concert at Bear Creek Nature Park, featuring The Dave Bennett Quartet. The ladies were entertained with a performance ranging from Benny Goodman to Roy Orbison. Dave is a local phenomenon who grew up in Waterford and certainly showed off his talent taking turns playing the clarinet, electric guitar, piano, and drums while providing vocals. If you missed Dave this time around, you can always check out his website, for a full schedule displaying listings into Crown Jewels is open to everyone and you are always welcome to join in. Melissa Rochford Homonyms, Church Humor T he church was short of money, so at Sunday s service, the Pastor made this announcement: If anyone will give one hundred dollars, they may pick three hymns. Miss Jones, in the back pew, jumped up and said Pastor, I can give one hundred dollars. The pastor replied Thank you Miss Jones, now you may pick three hymns. Miss Jones pointed and called out I pick him, and him, and him. Billie Roffe Christmas Set-Up Continues for GFAGC W e are continuing to work this month in getting all of the clothing and toys into their proper places ready for the shoppers in December. Our two dates to work are: Wednesday, October 14 th and Wednesday, October 28 th. We will work from 9-1 p.m. each of the days. Hopefully, by November we will have made a BIG dent in this project! 4 CHURCH & COMMUNITY Got a problem? We ll fix it May I help you? Folks sure are busy around here. This is little Josh, Jim and Linda Leinhos grandson. Jim hired Josh as back up at the IT helpdesk. He is still in training but is definitely getting the hang of it. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. Romans 12:13 You are built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the cornerstone. Ephesians 2: OUR VISITORS Good-bye friends L isa Friedrich and Robert Webber have visited Crown a few times. Please be sure to say hello to our guests and make them feel welcome. M ark and Elain Burns recently said good bye to our congregation. They were with us one year while Mark worked in an IT position for one of the Big 3 in Michigan. Elaine is a retired pharmacist. Mark served as an Usher while attending Crown. They moved back to Chattanooga, TN in September and are now preparing for their next adventure. Daily Prayer Christ, greater than hatred, teach us tolerance when we encounter hatred. Christ, greater than death, help us appreciate life when we encounter death. Christ, greater than night, help us realize sunset when we encounter discouragement. Christ, greater than sin, teach us penance when we encounter our faults. Amen Tom Schleder
PRESCHOOL Announcing! Crown of Life Preschool IS NOW OPEN TO STUDENTS! and...away we go Thoughts from director, Mary Tessmer... A fter 7 months of planning, re-planning, construction, plumbing, moving cleaning, shopping, assembling, inspections, challenges we never saw coming, mountains of paperwork, and lots of blood, sweat and sometimes even tears, I finally got to see children in the classroom space today. I held it together long enough to talk with the parents, but when I saw the children on the playground, I couldn t hold the tears back any longer. I am so richly blessed to have this opportunity. It s going to be a wonderful, wonderful year. Facebook Post 9/9/15 T he classroom space and the playground have come together beautifully! Crown of Life Preschool will be a warm, cheerful place for the children to learn and play. It would not have happened without the hard work of many volunteers. Pastor Lemley, Fred, Joyce, Mary and her children, Mel, Gil, and many others have given of their time, talents and treasures, and I am extremely grateful.. If I failed to mention your name, please forgive my oversight. My heart is full, and I can t wait to share our preschool with the children God has entrusted to our care and instruction. We passed our final inspections and are ready for an exciting year. Facebook Post 9/3/15 FYI...You can download registration packets from the Crown of Life Lutheran Church Website: crownoflifechurch.org Or visit for preschool updates LIKE and SHARE Crown Preschool
EDUCATION MINISTRY Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord. Psalm 127:3 Prayer for Sunday school students D ear heavenly Father, hear my prayer on behalf of those students beginning a new year of school. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Psalm 111:10). So grant them, first of all, a reverent respect of Your will and Your ways. Through their lessons guide them to a proper understanding of their vocation so that they may grow to serve You by serving their neighbors. In Jesus name I pray. Amen. Practice these things, immerse yourself in them, so that all may see your progress. 1 Timothy 4:15 Christian Education Teachers Installed P astor Lemley called Sunday school teachers to the altar and asked for God s blessing and guidance as they teach the foundations of the Christian faith to our young people. The class calendar has been prepared and there are 34 lessons in total for the year. You will see a new group of acolytes this month. They are our Confirmands being taught by Jim Leinhos. A man named Martin - Part 1 M ark Gugel will teach the Adult Bible class study this fall on Sunday mornings at 11am. The name of the class is A Man Named Martin - Part 1. Viewers of this video series encounter a 15th-century religious reformer from Germany who broke ranks with the Catholic Church. This Bible study is the first of a three-part series devoted to Martin Luther -- a monk whose Spirit-inspired grasp of God's justification of sinners through faith in the Savior was the cornerstone of the Protestant Reformation. This five-session Bible study will run through October. Luther's life and times are examined through the lens of history, religion and theology. Expanding on commentary from Rev. Gregory Seltz, Speaker for The Lutheran Hour. Numerous scholars add their expertise and perspective to render an illuminating portrait of the life of this extraordinary human being. Mark welcomes you to be a part of this exciting topic.
CHURCH & COMMUNITY Wellness Speaker at Bible Study T he Tuesday morning Bible study group was treated to lunch and a discussion of health and well being by Rochester Hills Chiropractors, Dr. Jeff Buller, D.C. and his son Dr. Jeffrey E. Buller, DACS. Their message is that Gods wants you to be healthy and their goal is to inspire members of the community to live healthier, smarter, stress free lives. They have a series of topics that cover Women s Health, Stress Less, and Healthy Living. Tuesday Morning Bible Study T he 2015/16 Bible study started last month. They meet every Tuesday morning at 9 am. Everybody welcome! Don t worry about missing anything. Join in at any time. The topic this year will the book of Romans. This is a very casual group that always has coffee and snacks. Top 5 reasons to be in Bible study 1. You need the truth. 2. Your faith will grow stronger. 3. Know what you believe and why. 4.
