Niftynotes news & information from the Diocese Compiled by Nicola Mellors JANUARY OneLIFE start praying The new year dawns with the excitement of the Archbishop of York's "One LIFE" mission to the diocese from September 12th - 15th, accompanied by the northern bishops and their teams, seeking to fulfil the Great Commission of the Risen Christ "Go and make disciples". It has been a privilege to take teams from the diocese on all the missions, to Sheffield, Durham, Blackburn, Carlisle and Newcastle. I've seen the impact and the potential - now it's our turn! The first response is prayer. "Devote yourselves to prayer". (Colossians 4:2) Let's make prayer for "One LIFE" a regular part of Sunday intercessions, a regular time of prayer at PCC, Deanery meetings, personal quiet time, perhaps creating prayer triplets. Archbishop Sentamu emphasised the centrality of prayer as we approached the CrossRoads mission to Blackburn in I have prayed daily for the CrossRoads mission that we encourage all to come to encounter Jesus Christ, that we will be filled and renewed by the power of the Holy Spirit and that we go out to share the Good News of Jesus Christ and God's love with everyone..from Blackpool to Burnley..may everyone know that Jesus rocks! As we make prayer for "One LIFE" part of the rhythm of parish and deanery, so we need to be committed to a culture of invitation. Lucille and I have led 39 "Seed Scattering" weekends across the diocese, and have witnessed fantastic imagination and energy from parishes organising events, always with simple Gospel testimony which are appropriate for the parish. We've enjoyed "open mic nights", pub quizzes, photographic exhibitions, bingo and buns, paws for thought, Scalextric evenings, beetle drives... all the events have been well organised, enjoyable, and always with the opportunity for Lucille or myself to share the love of Jesus and to invite everyone to a Guest Service in church on the Sunday. So prayer, culture of invitation and an expectation that the Continued on page 9 In this month s issue: 2 Growing Disciples 4 News in brief 5 Prayer diary ` 9 Events & information 11 Lay conference report 12 Comings

2 January 19 Growing Disciples... Growing Disciples... Growing Disciples... Wider Younger Deeper Last year, Events Adviser Paul Howard took the display trailer to some of the biggest community gatherings in Notts. It was used as a base for Messy Church, for prayer, for conversation even a baby changing unit. During his travels, Paul spoke to hundreds of people about faith and prayed with many of them. Taking the church out on the road 7TH APRIL: BRAMCOTE HILLS PARK, NOTTINGHAM I set up the trailer in a park in Bramcote on a very damp morning to act as a stage for Robert Cleave s departure on his round-the-world bike ride. The Park was alive with young and old people joining Robert on a lap of the park before he set off on his journey. The local church thought the trailer a great success and reminded me about their booking for their next event at the Hemlock Happening. 4TH, 5TH, 6TH, MAY: MEGGAR MOUT AT WALESBY SCOUT CAMP We were invited for the first time to set up Messy church for 6,000 Cubs, Scouts, Brownies, Beavers and Rainbows. I was inundated with over 800 children. The prayer tree was full and more than 200 badges were produced. Steve Cumberland and his scout troop fed and watered me every day. 11TH, 12TH, 13TH MAY NEWARK SHOW I took a fantastic team to help at Newark Show: Nick and Val West, and my wife Jill. We set up for Messy Church, a formula that works well - the kids play and we get to talk to mums, dads and grandparents. We had many discussions about faith, God and Brexit. We also took the Diocesan badge making machine which proved very popular with the children. We had over 400 visitors. 20TH MAY CALVERTON GET TOGETHER We used the trailer as a stage for an outdoor service attended by 70 people. I had also set up the marquee in the Scout field where we held a version of Messy church. The tent was full all afternoon with young and old doing craft work. 7TH 8TH 9TH 10TH AND 11TH JUNE SOUTHWELL FOLK Festival We had an invite to attend this year after being absent from the show for two years. God is good The festival is over four days and the whole town gets involved. We ran a Messy Church. 9TH JUNE HEMLOCK HAPPENING St Michael and All Angels Church volunteers set up a cafe and ran children s games. They took balloons by the dozen and filled the trailer with pictures of their church and its work. The weather was fine and dry and the

It makes for a busy day for me as we carry on running Messy Church at Southwell at the same time. 7TH JULY CHURCH OPEN WEEKEND This year we supported Rainworth Church with their open day and garden party. 2ND 3RD 4TH AUGUST RIVERSIDE FESTIVAL WEEKEND IN NOTTINGHAM The Riverside Festival is Nottingham s biggest free festival weekend, embracing the city s communities in three days of colourful family entertainment. It offered us the opportunity to work with lots of children and their families with Messy Church. We entertained hundreds of 29TH SEPTEMBER SOUTHWELL PLOUGH MATCH SATURDAY We took the trailer to Southwell Ploughing match for the eighth year running. The Mother s Union came along to help staff it. The volunteers knew lots of people because many were from local churches. The baby changing service we offered went down really well. 3RD TO 7TH OCTOBER GOOSE FAIR The council allowed the trailer on for nothing and saved us the same space by the coffee shop. The trailer was visited by hundreds of people and seen by many more. The question on everyone s lips was, what were we doing there? It was great to speak to the Show people who for generations had worked on Goose Fair and explained their faith and problems with being constantly on the road and not belonging to a single Parish; they had a real interest in what we were doing and let us share their lives for a brief time.

4 January 19 News in brief... News in brief... News in brief... News in brief... Housing and Homelessness More people are rough sleeping than at any time for 20 years. On a typical night in Nottingham city centre more than 43 people are living this way in doorways, tents and alleyways; even in skips and abandoned public toilets. Churches and Christian-run projects are increasingly key players in responding to people impacted by the rise in homelessness in the city and the county. This winter, projects like night shelters are on the frontline helping to tackle the damaging effects of rough sleeping: offering a lifeline to countless vulnerable people. These shelters are run by both paid staff and hundreds of amazing volunteers who live out their discipleship by being alongside some of the most marginalized people you could ever meet. These projects and volunteers love and serve others in the way of Jesus; regardless of where people have come from. The Shelters provide a safe, welcoming place to stay, offering a warm snack/meal, warm drink, a bed for the night and breakfast in the morning and offer help with a range of other support needs. 9 8 January 19 World links news - Burundi Rosemary Cottingham of St Mark s, Woodthorpe writes: Compiled for Nifty Notes Let the children come to me To see a choir of more than 50 children singing their hearts out during a morning service in a parish church is a common sight across the dioceses of the Anglican Church of Burundi. It is through the choirs that children, youth, university students, as well as adults grow in faith through prayer, fellowship and Bible study. Huge numbers are involved in the life of the Church from a very young age in this way. Today s children and youth in Burundi are growing up in relative, though fragile, peace in a country that has seen more than enough of violence and civil war. However, many children remain vulnerable to exploitation and neglect, especially orphans and those with disabilities. Ensuring that children receive Christian education is a major concern of the Church since many children only access primary education and some are kept at home to work the land, care for the animals and generally support the family. Every year hundreds of children attend confirmation classes, learning by rote with use of a chalk board at the back of their parish church. Activities in school holidays that may include anything from making bricks to planting trees to sport to dramatizing Bible stories help to engage youth in both the Church and the community. Provision of clubs and Bible groups in schools enable students to discuss their faith and to engage with a range of topics such as hygiene, nutrition, peace and reconciliation, and the care of the environment. Skills based training is provided by Mothers Union for girls who have been unable to finish school. In one parish youth are being equipped with IT skills so that they are prepared for the time when they will apply for jobs. Children with disabilities are being encouraged to understand that they have a right to education and can lead useful and fulfilling lives. Through its integrated health programmes the Church is also seeking to assist children and youth in the areas of malaria and HIV/AIDS prevention. Provision of sex education is encouraging responsible behaviour and providing safe forums for questions to be asked and issues to be discussed. The care and nurture of children and youth is an essential area of the mission and ministry of the Church. As the African proverb says, It takes a village to raise a child. In the spring of 2019 there will be training evenings for running an enquirers' course. It would be great if every PCC could nominate two people from each church to attend so that we are ready to help people on their spiritual journey. God bless. Bishop Tony The 2019 programme of Quiet Days at Sacrista Prebend, Southwell, is now published and can be picked up from Sacrista Prebend, Southwell Minster or on line (sacristaprebend.wordpress.com) All are welcome but please note that some are booking up quickly now. The first two are... 9th February The Revd Canon Valerie Rampton Loving God has four elements: Rest, Reverence, Obedience, Delight The quotation comes from John Owen, a 17th Century Puritan. I m sure we ll have heard plenty about obedience, and perhaps a bit about reverence, but probably very little about rest and delight. In this day we ll learn a bit about John Owen, explore rest, reverence and delight as ways of loving God, and have a nod at obedience. Tues 12th March Canon Angela Ashwin Roots and Fruits: Trust, Vulnerability and Gift in the Christian Life Jesus often uses the imagery of plants, seeds and fruitfulness when speaking about discipleship. On this Quiet Day we will explore what it means to be rooted and grounded in love (Ephesians 3), abiding in Jesus and being pruned in order to bear his fruit (John 15) Please contact the warden: The Revd Canon Tony Evans for more details or help in planning your own day or evening at Sacrista Prebend. Alpha for Seniors If you would like to explore running an alpha course or other nurture courses such as START aimed at older people please contact Paul Howard. Over the past few months Paul has led or assisted courses in several parishes and is now booking time in For more information please contact: Paul.howard@southwell. anglican.org

Niftynotes 11 Lay conference report... Lay conference report... Lay conference rep Setting God s People Free a conference for the laity The Archbishops Reform and Renewal programme for the church has produced a report about the importance of the Laity in supporting the ordained members as well as being missional in daily lives, especially Monday to Saturday. Michael Wilson, the Diocesan Lay Chair, had the idea of organising a day s conference on the report just for the laity in an attempt to encourage congregations and individuals to start to consider how we as a Diocese will respond. Michael said: I recognised that this was a bit of a risk as I had not heard of such a specific conference being organised for all the laity no matter what their role was in the church. When I discussed the possibility as an early idea with lay chairs from other dioceses they had not heard or even thought of such an event. It was a challenge but I was sure that if thought about carefully it was the way forward. I was really excited to get on with it once permission from Bishop Paul had been given. With the blessing of Bishop Paul, support from Jubilee House staff and a few planning meetings, with a lot of prayer, the conference was organised for Saturday November 17th at the Minster School. After a short act of worship, including two invitational hymns for lay involvement in the ministry of the church, a key note address was given by Alison Coulter, who is the Diocesan Lay Chair of the Winchester Diocese and a member of General Synod, but probably more importantly for the conference, one of the authors of the report Setting God s People Free. This was a good opening session with a number of questions being asked, helping to develop the understanding of the report s intentions. The conference was then addressed by Beth Yearsly from the Young Leadership College, a Diocesan project which is unique in the Church of England. This was the first time that some of those present had heard anything about the college and its work. The college is one of the initiatives supporting the vision of Growing Disciples Wider Younger and Deeper. The reaction to Beth s enthusiastic presentation was an epiphany for many in the room, with the new knowledge of so many young Christians being involved in the project at schools and workplaces, alongside the interns who work at the college for a year, being a great encouragement for the future. After lunch there was a series of workshops for people to attend. Michael continued:, The afternoon arrangements were the biggest challenge because this was the unknown. We originally planned for nine workshops of about 45 minutes to be run twice each. Once we knew definite numbers it was decided to have eight workshops each running once and this worked. The workshops included opportunities to learn about developments within the diocese (The School of Discipleship and The Potting Shed Church), challenges which need more discussion in parishes (Opening Minds and mental health issues, vacancies and Valuing All God s Children, with safeguarding and inclusion at its heart) and what can we do next (improving communications and support). Michael concluded: I am very pleased with the way everything went and how colleagues helped make the day run smoothly. The immediate feedback from those attending was enthusiastic for more with thanks for this opportunity. My thanks go to all those who led workshops, the main speakers and Bishop Paul for agreeing to the day happening. My only slight note of disappointment was that more people did not attend. However, I believe the day was a success, the main aim of the day was achieved with the added bonus of so much networking among those attending from across the diocese. Please note the deadline for the FEBRUARY 2019 issue of Nifty Notes is: 12TH JANUARY 2019

Education Department opening the doors of faith to generations PCC Secretary Dear Sir/Madam 18 th December 2018 Re: Time Travelling in Southwell & Nottingham Diocese You may already know, (and I hope you do!) that twice yearly, we run a week-long schools pilgrimage event at the Minster, and many Parishes over the years run or have run their own similar, smaller scale event, supported by the Education team at the Minster. The purpose of this letter is both to ensure that Parishes continue to be aware of the work we do, and also to highlight some ways you can support us and be involved. Time Travelling is a well-established part of the mission and outreach of the Cathedral, and has been providing high quality learning in RE for thousands of primary age children every year for well over 20 years. We are supported by volunteers from across the diocese (and beyond!). We begin our day together with an act of worship before children are taken on a journey around the building where they engage in up to 6 workshops, all designed to help teachers deliver the RE Syllabus, and to help children understand more about the building, faith and what it means to be a Christian Financial support: While each child who attends pays a small amount, we keep this to a minimum as schools budgets are squeezed ever tighter, and subsidise all places. Time Travelling has a restricted fund with no other source of income, except kind donations from local churches, charities, individuals and businesses. Each year we have to find an additional 4000 of funding to ensure the programme continues. This isn t a huge sum, by some standards, but feels like a mountain to climb each year! Donations are gratefully received, and every penny goes straight to Time Travelling. It may be that you feel able to support us in this way through your giving. If so, a cheque can be made payable to Southwell Cathedral Chapter and sent to us at the address below. Diana Ives: Cathedral Education Officer / Matt Hustwayte: Administrator Jubilee House, Westgate, Southwell, Nottinghamshire, NG25 0JH education@southwellminster.org.uk Prayer support: Prayer support means a huge amount to us, and if you can include us in your prayers we would be so grateful. General items for prayer would be for the volunteers and leadership team, for new volunteers to come forward and offer their time. Also, that all 1500 spaces would be filled with Key Stage 2 pupils in March and Key Stage 1 pupils in June. We can provide you with specific items to pray for, if you contact us and would be very happy to come along to one of your services or group meetings to tell your members more about Time Travelling, so that you can focus prayers more easily.

Education Department opening the doors of faith to generations Contact with local schools: Please encourage your local school to come to Time Travelling, both church and community schools are welcome. A coach costs about 250, which can make a visit impossible for some schools. If you are able to offer a coach subsidy to your local school, this might persuade them, and may be a good way of making contact with them. You could also offer to come as an additional helper. While all schools receive information about Time Travelling in the post each year, it would be great if you could put the enclosed flyer into the hands of a teacher, head teacher or school governor and encourage them to attend. Volunteering: If there is someone in your church who would be interested in attending Time Travelling as a volunteer, (there are various roles), do invite them to get in touch with us, we always enjoy welcoming new members of the team (on the right you will see Dean Nicola Sullivan guiding). No prior experience is necessary, and a day at Time Travelling brings together people from across the Diocese with a heart for working with children, including members of Diocesan staff. And finally how can we help you?: If you would like help engaging with your local school by running an event in church, we can offer support, advice, ideas and loan of resources, lesson plans and many years experience of working with local schools, so please get in touch if this would be useful to you. Diana (Education Officer) is happy to come and speak to your church or groups about Time Travelling, and if you would be interested to come along on one of the days just to see what it s all about, then you would be very welcome. Thank you for taking time to read this, and we hope that you feel able, as a Parish, support us in some way even just by keeping us in your prayers. With very best wishes Diana Ives (Education Officer) Matt Hustwayte (Education Administrator) Diana Ives: Cathedral Education Officer / Matt Hustwayte: Administrator Jubilee House, Westgate, Southwell, Nottinghamshire, NG25 0JH education@southwellminster.org.uk
