2 Niftynotes news & information from the Diocese Compiled by Nicola Mellors APRIL Bishop Paul s Easter message Following Billy Graham s death in February the most viral quotation from the late preacher at one point shared every 15 seconds on Twitter addresses Graham s own view of his death. He once said, Someday you will read or hear that Billy Graham is dead. Don t you believe a word of it. I shall be more alive than I have ever been. I will just have changed my address. I will have gone into the presence of God. These words express an entirely confident and hopeful view of life beyond death. This level of confidence does not belong only to high-profile evangelists, it can be the sure and certain hope of all who put their faith in the risen Christ, whatever fears they are facing. Our 21st century preoccupation with fulfilling all my desires today means that we prefer to avoid the subject of death; it has become the forbidden topic to raise in polite company. The author John Ortberg points out that our modern world generally deals with the cruel reality of death in three basic ways. First of all there are those who try to dilute the poisonous nature of this subject with humour. If you can laugh about death then maybe it will not seem so terribly final. Like Woody Allen, who famously said, I m not afraid of death, I just don t want to be there when it happens. Then there s another way people cope with death which is what one might call careless indifference. Like the kind of person who says, I can t do anything to prevent it happening, so there s really no point in thinking about it. This approach to death is a fairly modern feature of our western culture. You only have to go back one or two generations and many Christian parents would have tucked their children into bed at night with a prayer that began, Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take. 3 2 April 18 Growing Disciples... Growing Disciples... Growing Disciples... Wider Younger Deeper Exploring the secrets of happiness Woodborough Hall provided the wonderful setting for a group of 31 people who began the journey of the Happiness Lab Course on Monday 5th February. The Revd Anthony Giles - who is Vicar of St Swithun s in Woodborough, and Area Dean of Gedling Deanery - explains: We hoped to encourage ten to twelve people to come along, but through personal invitation and word of mouth we have been astonished to have 31 people sign up. In the past Woodborough Hall has been the setting for Alpha Courses that the church has run, and Bishop Tony also launched their Seed Scattering weekend at the historic Hall. Anthony continues: The Happiness Lab is a course over six weeks that explores the whole area of well-being, happiness and contentedness. Happiness is the Holy Grail of contemporary culture, and certainly any quick search on Google gives you over 340 million hits for happiness, and over 200 million for wellbeing. There are over 56,000 books titles in print exploring these themes. The Hall is a neutral venue with superb facilities and the manager, Tim, is very generous towards the church, allowing us to use their space. Photo: The delegates on the stairs at Woodborough Hall The Ugly Duckling Company, who produce the Course describe The Happiness Lab as a six week experiment that enables delegates to explore what psychologists, doctors and faith leaders say will make people happier. The themes of each week are: week 1: Focusing on gratitude and savouring week 2: Practising acts of kindness week 3: Learning to forgive week 4: Investing in friends and family week 5: Looking after your body and soul week 6: Developing coping strategies The hope is that after the course the group will want to take their thoughts and new friendships further by joining a Pilgrim Course that will follow on. Anthony and the team hope that longer term, the Happiness Lab will be a significant step towards encountering God and growing deeper in discipleship.

4 Niftynotes 3 News in brief... News in brief... News in brief... News in brief... Continued from page 1 That is not a particularly cheery way to send a child off to sleep! Yet people used to teach this to their children because they wanted them to know that death is real but it s not the end. And that leads us to the third way some people deal with the prospect of death with bleak resignation: I don t know if you recognise the name Mel Blanc? He was the voice behind all of the cartoon characters in Loony Tunes. At the end of every movie, Porky Pig would come on the screen, and would always say the same thing: That s all folks! Mel Blanc died in Can you guess what his family put on his tombstone? That s all folks! This really is the most important human question that can ever be asked Which is true: Jesus Christ is risen from the dead or That s all folks!? In Luke 24 the angels declare He is not here; he has risen! The sin of the world has been paid for in full, death has been defeated. And so from this point on, for the Christian, death is just a change of address. One day we will experience a new kind of life that is more wonderful than we could imagine. The apostle Paul writes, No eye has seen, no ear has heard, nor the human heart conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him. (1 Corinthians 2 v9). Jesus is still asking people today, Will you trust me? You don t need to hide behind the humour, or force yourself to be carelessly indifferent, you don t need to shudder at the finality of That s all folks! Jesus says, simply trust me. In a world filled with increasing uncertainty and fear we get to announce a message of abundant life that is offered freely to everyone: the deep love of the cross and the bright hope of Easter morning. Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia! Bishop Paul Nottinghamshire Historic Churches Trust Ride+Stride 2018 The Nottinghamshire Historic Churches Trust makes grants for the repair and maintenance of churches in the county that are over 30 years old. Over the lifetime of the Trust it has awarded over 1 million and in this year alone grants totalling 37,900 have been made. One of the ways in which it raise money is through the Ride+Stride event which is held on the second Saturday in September. Cyclists and walkers are sponsored to visit as many churches as they can and half of the amount raised is refunded to the sponsored person s own church. Last year it raised nearly 16,000. The format is very flexible and churches and participants are free to decide themselves how they organise the day. Some cyclists pride themselves on visiting as many churches as they can, while other churches treat it as an annual outing with a large group of people walking or cycling. Even those who sit in the church and provide that all important welcome can be sponsored. However, it is not always possible for a church to open its door. But they can still take part by pinning a Signing In form on the church door for cyclists and walkers to register their visit. Many churches open their doors and provide welcome refreshments for the participants. Ride+Stride event shares the same weekend with the Heritage Open Days and this is an excellent opportunity to take advantage of the publicity and open your church to show your neighbours and visitors something of your life and achievements. The Trust particularly hopes that churches which have been in receipt of grants from the Trust will show their appreciation by taking part this year. Please see the website uk for further details or contact the Ride+Stride Administrator Margaret.lowe@nottshistoricchur chtrust.com

5 4 April 18 Events & information... Events & information... Events & informatio Main event of the year At last month s national gathering in Nottingham, the partnership between Citizens UK and which explored how the Church is contributing to the Church s own five year goals, Bishop Paul remarked how community organising is helping churches in the Diocese to find their voice. Whether you are brand new to organising, or well entrenched in its principles and practices, this sentiment is at the heart of why Nottingham and Maun Valley Citizens exist to give people a voice, but then crucially to go a step further, equipping communities with the tools needed to get the change they need for the families and neighbourhoods they care about. Organising encourages thinking about two worlds the world as it is and the world as it should be training passionate and driven people to drag as many things as possible from the latter into the former. Chapel of Saint Mary the Virgin Comprising of over 50 member organisations, Nottingham and Maun Valley Citizens are organising across the Diocese for the common good, tackling the issues that matter to their constituent members hate crime; homelessness; trafficking and modern day slavery; loneliness and welcome; clean air; good wages and employment practices, to name just a few. In Nottingham, next month brings 2018 s largest and most significant political gathering of the year, as member institutions congregate with the city s decision makers seeking justice on some of the areas mentioned above, as well as celebrating the impact of commitments made over the past few years on areas such as low wages, social care, mental health and diversity. Admission to the May 10th event, at the Albert Hall, is by ticket only, with priority given to members institutions. If your church or school is not engaged with organising in the Diocese, Nottingham Citizens would love to welcome you there as a VIP. 9 8 April 18 World links news - Burundi Rosemary Cottingham, writes: While visiting St Mark s Church, Woodthorpe the Rt Revd Pontien Ribakare, the new Bishop of the new Diocese of Rutana in SE Burundi had an opportunity to share some of the challenges and opportunities he faces. Compiled for Nifty Notes Think big, plan big, start small To establish a new diocese in a very poor, predominantly rural area with very few resources, no partnerships, and no external funding might seem an extremely daunting task. However, Bishop Pontien is a man of prayer, vision and determination. His motto is: Think big, plan big, start small. He says, There are many challenges I have to face however we have to start with what we have, believing that as time goes on we will meet the needs we find. We start small. We prioritise. An inspirational start has been made as Church members sacrificially give small amounts of money to help establish the diocese - making and buying bricks and purchasing iron sheets and cement to finish the Cathedral Church and other parish churches under construction; contributing to the rent on a house that is used as the diocesan offices and providing Bishop Pontien and his wife Eulalie the salaries for the Bishop and a diocesan secretary. Diocesan staff working in development, Mothers Union, evangelism, finance, and communication are providing their services in the short-term as volunteers after doing their day jobs. Already a Bible School housed in a parish church built in the 1950s is providing training for twentyfive students six of who will be ordained deacon on August 26th. The Bishop, Diocesan Secretary and the three Archdeacons are teaching in the school and local Christians are growing and contributing food and paying two cooks. Three students from the diocese are at Bujumbura Christian University getting theological education to degree level. They received scholarships so the Diocese provides pocket money Confirmation of 336 people to cover expenses like accommodation. The diocese is beginning to think big and to plan strategically for the next 5 years. For example, to improve the quality of education and build the capacity of teachers; to improve adult literacy; to provide Christian students in schools with Bibles and other Christian books; to challenge gender based violence; and to construct a multi-purpose room for Church and community use. While partners along with income generating projects are needed so that the Diocese can sustain its mission and ministry, by starting small and working together the Kingdom of God is being extended.
