4 WE WORSHIP THE LORD BY HEARING HIS WORD FIRST READING: Isaiah 43:1-7 Near the end of Israel s exile in Babylon, God promises to bring them home. They need no longer be afraid, because the one who formed, created, and called them by name now redeems them from all their enemies. God declares them precious and honored, and God loves them. 1 But now thus says the LORD, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. 2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. 3 For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. I give Egypt as your ransom, Ethiopia and Seba in exchange for you. 4 Because you are precious in my sight, and honored, and I love you, I give people in return for you, nations in exchange for your life. 5 Do not fear, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and from the west I will gather you; 6 I will say to the north, Give them up, and to the south, Do not withhold; bring my sons from far away and my daughters from the end of the earth 7 everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made. 4

SECOND READING: Galatians 5:16-26 This passage from Galatians speaks of the traits that the Spirit gives to us so that we can show how Christ affects our lives. 16 Live by the Spirit, I say, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For what the flesh desires is opposed to the Spirit, and what the Spirit desires is opposed to the flesh; for these are opposed to each other, to prevent you from doing what you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not subject to the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are obvious: fornication, impurity, licentiousness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, anger, quarrels, dissensions, factions, 21 envy, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these. I am warning you, as I warned you before: those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, competing against one another, envying one another. 6 GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Lord, Let My Heart Be Good Soil GOSPEL: Luke 3:15-17, P: The Holy Gospel according to LUKE, the 3RD chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord. The reading opens with questions about the identity of the Messiah. John the Baptist insists that he is not the Messiah; instead he points ahead to one who is coming. And whether the voice of God was heard by all or only by Jesus, God settles the matter: Jesus is God s beloved Son. 15 As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, 16 John answered all of them by saying, I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of 6

7 his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire. 21 Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased. P: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. CHILDREN'S MESSAGE SERMON PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Brief time for Joys and Concerns to be shared. We pray especially for Joe Kendall, Anna Marie Meyer, Kathy Goss, Linda Dudine, Pastor Roberta Meyer, Evan White, River Harbin, Darlene Dicus, Pat Waninger, and Linda Trill and government workers affect by the Government shutdown. A: United as one body in Christ, let us pray for the church, the world, and all those in need. Brief Silence A: We pray for the church. Pour out your Spirit upon us and enliven us for mission. Draw us together in love that we may be one. Lead us in the way of your beloved Son. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. 7

8 A: For the earth. Sustain oceans and seas, rivers and lakes, marshes and wetlands. Watch over dormant plants and hibernating animals as they rest in your care. Renew your creation and protect all creatures from harm. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. A: For the nations. Inspire leaders to work for the common good. Grant courage to those who put themselves at risk to protect others. Turn us away from violence and teach us to live in peace. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. A: For those in need. Protect children and vulnerable adults who depend on others to provide for their daily care. Uphold those who struggle with depression. Console the grieving and heal the sick. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. A: For this assembly. Bless the newly baptized. Renew your children in the covenant of baptism. Empower us by your loving Spirit to serve our neighbors. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. A: With thanksgiving, we remember those who have died. Hold us safe in your arms of mercy and bring us with them into your promise of life eternal. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. Other intercessions may be added. P: Receive our prayers and fill us with the radiance of your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. C: Amen. 9 WE WORSHIP THE LORD BY GIVING OFFERING OFFERTORY As the Grains of Wheat OFFERTORY PRAYER P: God of all creation, all you have made is good, and your love endures forever. You bring forth bread from the earth and fruit from the vine. Nourish us with these gifts, that we might be for the world signs of your gracious presence in Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. 10 WE WORSHIP THE LORD BY RECEIVING THE LORD'S SUPPER BRIEF ORDER FOR CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS P: Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, who creates us and forms us, who redeems us and calls us, who unites us and sends us. C: Amen. P: Gathered in God s presence, let us confess our sin. Brief Silence Mighty and loving God, C: we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We seek our own way. We divide the body of Christ. In your mercy, cleanse us and heal us. Let the words of our mouths, the thoughts of our hearts, and everything that we do be filled with faith, hope, and love. Amen. P: Hear the voice of Jesus: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me to proclaim release to the captives. In the name of Jesus Christ, I proclaim to you that your sins are forgiven and you are released. The joy of the Lord is your strength, and the gifts of the Holy Spirit are yours forever. C: Amen. 10

11 FAITH STATEMENT We believe in God above us, maker and sustainer of all life, of sun and moon, of water and earth, of male and female. We believe in God beside us, Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh, born of a woman s womb, servant of the poor. He was tortured and nailed to a tree. A man of sorrows, he died forsaken. He descended into the earth to the place of death. On the third day he rose from the tomb. He ascended into heaven to be everywhere present, and his kingdom will come on earth. We believe in God within us, the Holy Spirit of Pentecostal fire, life-giving breath of the Church, spirit of healing and forgiveness, source of resurrection and of life everlasting. Amen. WORDS OF INSTITUTION In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. 11

12 LORD S PRAYER P: Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us to pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. WE RECEIVE HOLY COMMUNION COMMUNION EXPLANATION We welcome all baptized believers to take part in Holy Communion. To receive communion please come down the center aisle in two continuous lines. You will first receive a wafer (gluten free wafers are available upon request) and then receive a cup containing either red wine or white grape juice (which is located in the center of the tray.) Once you have communed you may return to your seats by the side aisles. If you do not commune you are welcomed to come forward for a blessing. If you are unable to come forward and would like to receive communion please indicate so after everyone else has communed by raising your hand. WE PRAYERFULLY LISTEN TO MUSIC DURING DISTRIBUTION POST-COMMUNION BLESSING P: May the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen you and keep you in his grace. C: Amen. 12

13 POST-COMMUNION PRAYER P: We thank you, O God, that you have fed us at your banqueting table with bread and wine beyond compare, the very life of Christ for us. Send your Spirit with us now, that we may set the captive free, use your gifts to build one another up, and in everything reflect your glory revealed in Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. C: Amen. NURSERY: St. John's loves having children in church, but we want parents to know that we do have an unmanned nursery available downstairs in our Education Wing if needed. The nursery is wired for sound so you can still participate in the service. Take the ramp downstairs which is located next to the upstairs restroom. The nursery is located on the left-hand side of the long hallway four doors down. 14

15 HANDICAP SEATING: We ask that you please remember to reserve the shortened seating in the middle of the sanctuary for those who need them. Thank you. HEARING DEVICES: St. John's offers "Hearing Devices" to individuals who need them. They are located in a basket in the Narthex. They have been updated and are ready to be used. The batteries are not in the device but are in the basket and need to be installed to use. If you wear a hearing aid you will need to remove it and put the ear bud directly into your ear. You are welcomed to bring your own ear buds. If you have any questions or need any help contact Linus Mann at Our Pastor uses a microphone but sometimes extra help is needed to help enhance your worship experience. I d love to know what your word is. It is a great way to work on your relationship with God and yourself during this year. Pastor Catherine. 18 WOMEN S BIBLE STUDY: The Women of the ELCA will be meeting on Thursday, January 17 th at 1 p.m. They will be studying the January Gather Magazine. Everyone is invited to attend. PERSONAL CARE KITS: St. John s Women are collecting items to make Personal Care Kits for Lutheran World Relief. Each kit contains the following items: one light-weight bath size towel (20 X40 to 52 X27 ) dark color recommended, two or three bath-size bars of soap equaling 8 to 9 oz. any brand, in original wrapping (no mini or hotel size), one adult size toothbrush in its original packaging (toothbrush multi-packs may be used by sealing an individual toothbrush in a business size envelope, no plastic bags or wrap), one sturdy comb (no picks or fine toothed combs), one metal nail clippers. Items will be collected thru March Thank you. SUNDAY SCHOOL OUTREACH PROJECT: This year the Sunday School is supporting the Dubois County Department of Child Services. They are collecting new clothes with the tags still on them and money to buy new clothes for children that are in the Foster Care System. They will be handing over the second batch of items in May. Everyone is invited to take part. YOUTH MOVIE NIGHT: St. Paul s Lutheran Church is hosting Movie Night at 6:00 p.m. on January 13 th. This is open to 6 th thru 12 th graders. This is a Lutheran Cooperative Ministry Event. The movie will be Leap of Faith. GAME NIGHT AT CHRIST LUTHERAN: Mark your calendars now. Christ Lutheran is hosting a game night on Friday, February 8 th at 6:00 p.m. Don t forget to bring a game to play and some food to eat. 18

19 THE IRELAND HISTORICAL SOCIETY will present its first program of 2019 on Sunday, Jan. 20, at 1:30 pm in the Society Bldg. The military veterans of the Ireland High School Class of 1967 will provide an educational view of their experiences while they were in the service of our country. Thirteen men of the class, comprising over 65% of the males of the class, served in the military in the Army, Navy or Marines. Eleven of the men are still living. We hope to have a good showing of this group. All military verterans, past and present, are especially invited to attend. As always the public is invited to attend. Refreshments will be available after the program. EPIPHANY SERMON SERIES: During the Epiphany Season I will be focusing on the Fruits of the Spirit. We will look at the questions of: How can I be recognized as a Christian by the people around me? Do I live in such a way that other people will know we are Christians? God has shown us how to live like Jesus in the pages of the Bible, and one of the best descriptions of the Christian life is found in Galatians 5. If you are going to live your life like Jesus, then it all comes down to this one simple instruction: LIVE BY THE SPIRIT.
