Mission Statement The community of Providence Presbyterian Church seeks, by our words and actions, to love Lubbock, West Texas, and the world with the shalom of Jesus Christ. We want to engage Lubbock and West Texas in the arenas of proclaiming truth, contributing to and renewing culture, and practicing mercy with justice. We will seek to plant a closely-networked series of medium-sized churches that will reflect both the city of Lubbock and the heavenly city to come.
2 HYMN 92 THE LORD S DAY July 22, 2012 A Mighty Fortress is Our God Based on Psalm 46. Words and Music: Martin Luther, * CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 122:1 1 I was glad when they said to me, Let us go to the house of the Lord! * Congregation Standing All music copied by permission of CCLI # All Scripture References from: The Holy Bible, English Standard Version (ESV) Copyright 2001 by Crossway Bibles, A publishing ministry of Good News Publishers. - Page Page 2 -
3 * HYMN 390 Lord of the Sabbath, Hear Us Pray Words: Philip Doddridge, Music: William Gardiner s Sacred Medodies, * HYMN The Church s One Foundation 1996 Parson John Publishing (ASCAP). Words: Samuel Stone, Music: Brian Moss. 1. The church s one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord, She is His new creation by water and the Word. From heaven He came and sought her to be His holy bride; With His own blood He bought her, and for her life He died. 2. Elect from every nation, yet one over all the earth; Her charter of salvation, one Lord, one faith, one birth; One holy Name she blesses, partakes one holy food, And to one hope she presses, with every grace endued. 3. Though with a scornful wonder men see her sore oppressed, By schisms rent asunder, by heresies distressed, Yet saints their watch are keeping; their cry goes up, How long? And soon the night of weeping shall be the morn of song. 4. The church shall never perish, her dear Lord to defend To guide, sustain and cherish, is with her to the end Though there be those that hate her, and false sons in her pale Against a foe or traitor, she ever shall prevail 5. Mid toil and tribulation, and tumult of her war, She waits the consummation of peace forevermore; Til, with the vision glorious, her longing eyes are blessed, And the great church victorious shall be the church at rest. 6. Yet she on earth hath union with God the Three in One, And mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won. O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we Like them, the meek and lowly, on high may dwell with Thee. * INVOCATION - Page Page 4 -
4 CONFESSION OF FAITH I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. Apostles Creed And in Jesus Christ His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, Born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. CONFESSION OF SIN Awesome and compassionate God, you have loved us with unfailing, self-giving mercy, but we have not loved you. You constantly call us, but we do not listen. You ask us to love, but we walk away from neighbors in need, wrapped in our own concerns. God of grace, as you come to us in mercy, we repent in spirit and in truth, admit our sin, and gratefully receive your forgiveness through Jesus Christ, our Redeemer. Amen ASSURANCE OF PARDON IN CHRIST OFFERING NEW TESTAMENT READING 1 Corinthians 15:35-49 The Resurrection Body 35 But someone will ask, How are the dead raised? With what 36 kind of body do they come? You foolish person! What you 37 sow does not come to life unless it dies. And what you sow is not the body that is to be, but a bare kernel, perhaps of wheat or 38 of some other grain. But God gives it a body as he has chosen, 39 and to each kind of seed its own body. For not all flesh is the same, but there is one kind for humans, another for animals, 40 another for birds, and another for fish. There are heavenly bodies and earthly bodies, but the glory of the heavenly is of one 41 kind, and the glory of the earthly is of another. There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for star differs from star in glory. 42 So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is 43 perishable; what is raised is imperishable. It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised 44 in power. It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. 45 If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. Thus it is written, The first man Adam became a living being ; the last 46 Adam became a life-giving spirit. But it is not the spiritual that 47 is first but the natural, and then the spiritual. The first man was from the earth, a man of dust; the second man is from heaven. 48 As was the man of dust, so also are those who are of the dust, and as is the man of heaven, so also are those who are of heaven. 49 Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven. - Page Page 6 -
5 HYMN For All the Saints Words: William H. How, 1864, 1875; Music: Christopher Miner 1997 PRAYER OF INTERCESSION 1. For all the saints, who from their labors rest Who Thee by faith before the world confessed, Thy Name, O Jesus, be forever blessed. 2. Thou wast their Rock, their Fortress and their Might; Thou, Lord, their Captain in the well fought fight; Thou, in the darkness drear, their one true Light. 3. O may Thy soldiers, faithful, true and bold, Fight as the saints who nobly fought of old, And win with them the victor s crown of gold. 4. The golden evening brightens in the west; Soon, soon to faithful warriors comes their rest; Sweet is the calm of paradise the blest. 5. But lo! there breaks a yet more glorious day; The saints triumphant rise in bright array; The King of glory passes on His way. 6. From earth s wide bounds, from ocean s farthest coast, Through gates of pearl streams in the countless host, Singing to Father, Son and Holy Ghost: Alleluia, Alleluia! SERMON Psalm 122 Let Us Go to the House of the Lord A Song of Ascents. Of David. I was glad when they said to me, Let us go to the house of the Lord! Our feet have been standing within your gates, O Jerusalem! Jerusalem built as a city that is bound firmly together, 4 to which the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord, as was decreed for Israel, to give thanks to the name of the Lord. 5 There thrones for judgment were set, the thrones of the house of David. 6 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem! May they be secure who love you! 7 Peace be within your walls and security within your towers! 8 For my brothers and companions' sake I will say, Peace be within you! 9 For the sake of the house of the Lord our God, I will seek your good. - Page Page 8 -

Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following You as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what You claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and show me the reality of who You are. Amen. Prayer of Belief Heavenly Father, I admit that I am more sinful than I ever before believed, but, through Your Son Jesus, I can be more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank You that He lived the life I should have lived, and paid the debt and punishment I deserved. Receive me now for His sake. I turn from my sins and receive Jesus to be my Lord and Savior. Amen. Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, help me to look to You as the fulfillment of all my needs, and to turn from every false satisfaction to feed on You, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to You, the pioneer and perfecter of my faith. Amen. Prayer of Commitment Lord Jesus, You have called us to follow You in a life of committed discipleship in Your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with Your people, and live in the fullness of Your Spirit. Amen. - Page 13 -
