THE LORD S DAY September 13, 2009 * CALL TO WORSHIP Revelation 5: And they sang a new song, saying, * PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP Hymn 53 Praise to the Lord, the Almighty Words: Based on Psalm 103, Joachim Neander, Tune: Stralsund Gesangbuch, Worthy are you to take the scroll And to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation, 10 and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth. 11 Then I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living creatures and the elders the voice of many angels, numbering myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, 12 saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing! 13 And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever! 14 And the four living creatures said, Amen! and the elders fell down and worshiped. * Congregation Standing All music copied by permission of CCLI # Page Page 2 -

* HYMN What Wondrous Love Is This Public Domain. Words and music: American folk hymn. 1. What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul! What wondrous love is this, O my soul! What wondrous love is this that caused the Lord of bliss To bear the dreadful curse for my soul, for my soul, To bear the dreadful curse for my soul. 2. When I was sinking down, sinking down, sinking down, When I was sinking down, sinking down, When I was sinking down beneath God s righteous frown, Christ laid aside His crown for my soul, for my soul, Christ laid aside His crown for my soul. 3. To God and to the Lamb, I will sing, I will sing; To God and to the Lamb I will sing. To God and to the Lamb Who is the great I Am; While millions join the theme, I will sing, I will sing; While millions join the theme, I will sing. 4. And when from death I m free, I ll sing on, I ll sing on; And when from death I m free, I ll sing on. And when from death I m free, I ll sing and joyful be, And through eternity I ll sing on, I ll sing on, And through eternity I ll sing on. HYMN 295 Crown Him with Many Crowns Words: Matthew Bridges, Tune: George J. Elvey, 1865 * INVOCATION - Page Page 4 -

CONFESSION OF SIN Minister: O Lord, my every sense, member, faculty, affection, is a snare to me. People: I can scarce open my eyes but I envy those above me, or despise those below. Minister: I covet honor and riches of the mighty, and am proud and unmerciful to the rags of others; People: If I behold beauty it is a bait to lust, or see deformity, it stirs up loathing and disdain; Minister: How soon do slanders, vain jests, and wanton speeches creep into my heart! Am I comely? What fuel for pride! People: Am I deformed? What an occasion for repining! Minister: Am I gifted? How I lust after applause! People: Am I unlearned? How I despise what I have not! Minister: Am I inferior? How much I grudge other s preeminence! People: Am I rich? How exalted I become! All: You know that all these are snares by my corruptions, and that my greatest snare is myself. My apprehensions are dull, my thoughts mean, my affections stupid, my expressions low, my life unbeseeming. Keep me ever mindful of my natural state, but let me not forget my heavenly title, or the grace that can deal with every sin. OFFERING CONFESSION OF FAITH Question: What is sanctification? Answer: Sanctification is a work of God's grace, whereby they whom God has, before the foundation of the world, chosen to be holy, are in time, through the powerful operation of his Spirit applying the death and resurrection of Christ unto them, renewed in their whole man after the image of God; having the seeds of repentance unto life, and all other saving graces, put into their hearts, and those graces so stirred up, increased and strengthened, as that they more and more die unto sin, and rise unto newness of life. Westminster Larger Catechism 75 NEW TESTAMENT READING Acts 2:1-4 The Coming of the Holy Spirit 1 When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. The Holy Bible, English Standard Version (ESV), Copyright 2001 by Crossway Bibles, A publishing ministry of Good News Publishers. ASSURANCE OF PARDON IN CHRIST - Page Page 6 -

* HYMN 106 Father, Father of All Things Words: Lyn Riley, Tune, Neil Riley, SERMON Acts 2:1-13 I knew we had to try To reach up and touch the sky, baby. Whatever happened to you and I, That I don't want to go home? Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes "I Don't Want to Go Home" Turning and turning in the widening gyre The falcon cannot hear the falconer; Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world, The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere The ceremony of innocence is drowned; The best lack all conviction, while the worst Are full of passionate intensity. Surely some revelation is at hand; Surely the Second Coming is at hand. The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi Troubles my sight: a waste of desert sand; A shape with lion body and the head of a man, A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun, Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it Wind shadows of the indignant desert birds. The darkness drops again but now I know That twenty centuries of stony sleep Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle, And what rough beast, its hour come round at last, louches towards Bethlehem to be born? PRAYER OF INTERCESSION William Butler Yeats, "The Second Coming" - Page Page 8 -

* HYMN 726 Spirit of the Living God Words and Music: Daniel Iverson, * GLORIA PATRI Hymn 735 Glory be to the Father, And to the Son, And to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, Is now, and ever shall be, World without end. Amen, Amen * BENEDICTION Prayers of Meditation For Those Not Participating in Communion Prayer for Those Searching for Truth Lord Jesus, You claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following You as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what You claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and show me the reality of who You are. Amen. Prayer of Belief Heavenly Father, I admit that I am more sinful than I ever before believed, but, through Your Son Jesus, I can be more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank You that He lived the life I should have lived, and paid the debt and punishment I deserved. Receive me now for His sake. I turn from my sins and receive Jesus to be my Lord and Savior. Amen. Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, help me to look to You as the fulfillment of all my needs, and to turn from every false satisfaction to feed on You, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to You, the pioneer and perfecter of my faith. Amen. SACRAMENT OF THE LORD S SUPPER We hold the elements while they are being passed, so we can partake together. - Page 9 - Prayer of Commitment Lord Jesus, You have called us to follow You in a life of committed discipleship in Your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with Your people, and live in the fullness of Your Spirit. Amen. - Page 10 -

Follow-up Questions to the Sermon 1. How does material in Yeats' "The Second Coming" invert and distort aspects of what the Bible teaches about creation and redemption? See images such as the "Spiritus Mundi," "desert sand," "darkness," and many more. For what purpose does Yeats deploy these inversions? 2. In Acts 2:2-3, Luke is careful to tell us that upon the disciples came events like a mighty wind and like divided tongues. Do those comparisons mean that wind and fire were not present at Pentecost, only something approximating them? 3. Examine the list of nations represented at this Pentecost. Is this an occurrence only for Jewish people? 4.Is speaking in tongues for the church today? 5.Are you a part of this Pentecost? Are you practicing its values? PPC Announcements Friendship Registry Located on the end of the row is a friendship registry. Please let us know of your attendance in worship this morning by filling out the registry and passing it down the row.
