Mission Statement The community of Providence Presbyterian Church seeks, by our words and actions, to love Lubbock, West Texas, and the world with the shalom of Jesus Christ. We want to engage Lubbock and West Texas in the arenas of proclaiming truth, contributing to and renewing culture, and practicing mercy with justice. We will seek to plant a closelynetworked series of medium-sized churches that will reflect both the city of Lubbock and the heavenly city to come.

THE LORD S DAY February 27, 2011 * HYMN 1 All People That on Earth Do Dwell Words: Psalm 100 (Williams Kethe, 1561). Tune: Old Hundredth. * CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 136:1-6 How Shall We Sing the Lord's Song? 1 By the waters of Babylon, there we sat down and wept, when we remembered Zion. 2 On the willows there we hung up our lyres. 3 For there our captors required of us songs, and our tormentors, mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion! 4 How shall we sing the Lord's song in a foreign land? 5 If I forget you, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget its skill! 6 Let my tongue stick to the roof of my mouth, if I do not remember you, if I do not set Jerusalem above my highest joy! * Congregation Standing All music copied by permission of CCLI # Page Page 2 -

* HYMN 296 All Hail the Power of Jesus Name! Words: Edward Perronet (v. 1-4), 1779; John Rippon (v. 5-6), Tune: Oliver Holden, * INVOCATION * HYMN 520 Jesus, Thy Blood and Righteousness Words: Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf, 1739; Translated by: John Wesley,1740. Tune: William Gardner s Sacred Melodies, Page Page 4 -

CONFESSION OF SIN Our Father in heaven, You have promised to provide for your children, to give us each day our daily bread. But will you really provide for us? We depend upon ourselves, trust our own instincts, believe that it s up to us to find provision, and think that what we have comes by our own hand. We are anxious for provision, but we depend upon ourselves. Forgive us our sins. You have promised to protect your children, to lead us not into temptation. But will you really protect us? We depend upon ourselves, trust our own shields, believe that our own protection is sufficient, and think that what we ve avoided comes by our own mind and will. We are anxious for protection, but we depend upon ourselves. Forgive us our sins, And grant us faith to depend upon you. In Jesus name Amen. CONFESSION OF FAITH We believe that this good God, after he created all things, did not abandon them to chance or fortune but leads and governs them according to his holy will, in such a way that nothing happens in this world without his orderly arrangement. This doctrine gives us unspeakable comfort since it teaches us that nothing can happen to us by chance but only by the arrangement of our gracious heavenly Father. He watches over us with fatherly care, keeping all creatures under his control, so that not one of the hairs on our heads (for they are all numbered) nor even a little bird can fall to the ground without the will of our Father. In this thought we rest, knowing that he holds in check the devils and all our enemies, who cannot hurt us without his permission and will. 5 OLD TESTAMENT READING 1 Kings 13:11-34 The Prophet's Disobedience 11 Now an old prophet lived in Bethel. And his sons came and told him all that the man of God had done that day in Bethel. They also told to their father the words that he had spoken to the king. 12 And their father said to them, Which way did he go? And his sons showed him the way that the man of God who came from Judah had gone. 13 And he said to his sons, Saddle the donkey for me. So they saddled the donkey for him and he mounted it. 14 And he went after the man of God and found him sitting under an oak. And he said to him, Are you the man of God who came from Judah? And he said, I am. 15 Then he said to him, Come home with me and eat bread. 16 And he said, I may not return with you, or go in with you, neither will I eat bread nor drink water with you in this place, 17 for it was said to me by the word of the Lord, You shall neither eat bread nor drink water there, nor return by the way that you came. 18 And he said to him, I also am a prophet as you are, and an angel spoke to me by the word of the Lord, saying, Bring him back with you into your house that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied to him. 19 So he went back with him and ate bread in his house and drank water. 20 And as they sat at the table, the word of the Lord came to the prophet who had brought him back. 21 And he cried to the man of God who came from Judah, Thus says the Lord, Because you have disobeyed the word of the Lord and have not kept the command that the Lord your God commanded you, 22 but have come back and have eaten bread and drunk water in the place of which he said to you, Eat no bread and drink no water, your body shall not come to the tomb of your fathers. 23 And after he had eaten bread and drunk, he saddled the donkey for the prophet whom he had brought back. 24 And as he went away a lion met him on the road and killed him. And his body was thrown in the road, and the donkey stood beside it; the lion also stood beside the body. 25 And behold, men passed by and saw the body thrown in the road and the lion standing by the body. And they came and told it in the city where the old prophet lived. 26 And when the prophet who had brought him back from the way heard of it, he said, It is the man of God who disobeyed the word of the Lord; therefore the Lord has given him to the lion, which has torn him and killed him, according to the word that the Lord spoke to him. 27 And he said to his sons, Saddle the donkey for me. And they saddled it. 28 And he went and found his body thrown in the road, and the donkey and the lion standing beside the body. The lion had not eaten the body or torn the donkey. 29 And the prophet took up the body of the man of God and laid it on the donkey and brought it back to the city to mourn and to bury him. 30 And he laid the body in his own grave. And they mourned over him, saying, Alas, my brother! 31 And after he had buried him, he said to his sons, When I die, bury me in the grave in which the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones. 32 For the saying that he called out by the word of the Lord against the altar in Bethel and against all the houses of the high places that are in the cities of Samaria shall surely come to pass. 33 After this thing Jeroboam did not turn from his evil way, but made priests for the high places again from among all the people. Any who would, he ordained to be priests of the high places. 34 And this thing became sin to the house of Jeroboam, so as to cut it off and to destroy it from the face of the earth. - Page Page 8 -

* HYMN God Moves in a Mysterious Way Words: William Cowper, Music: Alexander Reinagle (arr. Bill Moore). (Tune: RUF Version of How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds) 1. God moves in a mysterious way His wonders to perform; He plants His footsteps in the sea And rides upon the storm. 2. Deep in unfathomable mines Of never failing skill He treasures up His bright designs, And works His sovereign will. 3. Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take; The clouds ye so much dread Are big with mercy, and shall break In blessings on your head. 4. Judge not the Lord by feeble sense, But trust Him for His grace; Behind a frowning providence He hides a smiling face. 5. His purposes will ripen fast, Unfolding ev ry hour; The bud may have a bitter taste, But sweet will be the flow r. 6. Blind unbelief is sure to err And scan His work in vain; God is His own interpreter, And He will make it plain. SERMON 1 Peter 1:1-2 Greeting 1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who are elect exiles of the dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, 2 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you. * HYMN 307 Nothing but the Blood Words: Robert Lowry, Tune: Robert Lowry, What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus; What can make me whole again? Nothing but the blood of Jesus. Chorus: Oh! Precious is the flow that makes me white as snow; No other fount I know, nothing but the blood of Jesus. 2. For my pardon, this I see, Nothing but the blood of Jesus; For my cleansing, this my plea, Nothing but the blood of Jesus. Chorus: Oh! Precious is the flow that makes me white as snow; No other fount I know, nothing but the blood of Jesus. PRAYER OF INTERCESSION - Page Page 10 -

3. Nothing can for sin atone, Nothing but the blood of Jesus Naught of good that I have done, Nothing but the blood of Jesus. Chorus: Oh! Precious is the flow that makes me white as snow; No other fount I know, nothing but the blood of Jesus. *DOXOLOGY Old Hundredth - Hymn 731 Praise God from whom all blessings flow, Praise him, all creatures here below: Praise him above, ye heav nly host, Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost - Amen. 4. This is all my hope and peace, Nothing but the blood of Jesus; This is all my righteousness, Nothing but the blood of Jesus. Chorus: Oh! Precious is the flow that makes me white as snow; No other fount I know, nothing but the blood of Jesus. 5. Now by this I ll overcome Nothing but the blood of Jesus; Now by this I ll reach my home Nothing but the blood of Jesus. Chorus: Oh! Precious is the flow that makes me white as snow; No other fount I know, nothing but the blood of Jesus. * BENEDICTION All Scripture References from: The Holy Bible, English Standard Version (ESV), Copyright 2001 by Crossway Bibles, A publishing ministry of Good News Publishers. 10 Sermon Notes Prayers of Meditation For Those Not Participating in Communion Prayer for Those Searching for Truth Lord Jesus, You claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following You as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what You claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and show me the reality of who You are. Amen. Prayer of Belief Heavenly Father, I admit that I am more sinful than I ever before believed, but, through Your Son Jesus, I can be more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank You that He lived the life I should have lived, and paid the debt and punishment I deserved. Receive me now for His sake. I turn from my sins and receive Jesus to be my Lord and Savior. Amen. Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, help me to look to You as the fulfillment of all my needs, and to turn from every false satisfaction to feed on You, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to You, the pioneer and perfecter of my faith. Amen. Prayer of Commitment Lord Jesus, You have called us to follow You in a life of committed discipleship in Your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with Your people, and live in the fullness of Your Spirit. Amen.
