1 Fr. Alex s Message: Is Evil Real? One of the first times I really started to think about evil, and its presence in my life, was a frigid, windy October night when I was 11 years old. I guess because it was around Halloween, the tv was full of horror movies and other programming about things that go bump in the night. And I had discovered, flipping through our TV Guide (yes, very old school, I know), that The Exorcist was on. This was a movie I had heard all about my brothers and sister, and seemingly all of their friends, had been delightfully terrified by the blockbuster some years before, and it often came up in conversations I would overhear, before I was observed and the lively, excited discussions turned to hushed tones. It was the stuff of legend to me. Was it that awful? If it were, then why was everyone raving about it? How come when I came around everyone got quiet about this mysterious movie? So I first took the obvious route and asked my parents permission to watch. After the expected Absolutely not, I devised a plan to drift downstairs after everyone else was asleep. After going to bed, I bided my time listened for all the usual door closings and bedtime preparation noises to cease. I was scared but full of anticipation. I could feel my heart thumping a mile a minute, and I m not sure if I were more scared about the movie or what my parents might do if they caught me. When the moment was right, I made my move down from my second floor bedroom to the living room, thinking every creak of every board I padded on would soon give me away. But I made it undetected. Suffice it to say, the next hour and a half, I was transfixed by what I saw: deeply terrified by the visuals and storyline, and knowing I was sentencing myself to years of nightmares with every minute of viewing, but also truly engaged with the battle between good and evil that was unfolding within the narrative. There would be no sleeping that night once I crept back upstairs; the nightmares I anticipated came to fruition in short time (and indeed for years). While I was certainly too young to take in The Exorcist, something positive was spurred by my covert viewing I began to think about spiritual warfare. I began to think about the reality of evil in my life and, as terrifying as that was, the reality of God fighting for my life and soul out of love for me. I also began to think about others who might love me enough to fight for these things, if the need arose, even if on a much less dramatic level: spiritual leaders, teachers, family members, friends. Isaiah 52:8 Our parishioners (adults and children) are always invited to read the Epistle during Sunday Liturgy. Like the holy people of scripture, we too can lift up our voices in praise of God. Sunday Schoolers, teachers, all parishioners, come read! Contact Fr. Alex to arrange a November date. Oct. 7: Parish Chanters Oct. 14: Phoebe Chetsas Oct. 21: Doug Philipon Oct. 28: Lori Pitsas Is Evil Real? (continued) It was all scary to think about, but over the years, as I used the experience as a jumping off point to read accounts of spiritual warfare in scripture, it also made me realize that God, and His faithful people, considered me worth fighting for just like the Regan character s family and clergy fought the ultimate darkness for her soul. Evil, it turned out, was real not only personal and internal but also external, beyond us, un-invited. The Devil, as I read and learned, was not a personification of evil or a mere metaphor for our darker inclinations. While our Orthodox theology considers evil a complete negative, it s undoubtedly a very strong negative in our lives. If evil constitutes an absence of good, a hole where God has not been invited to dwell, it is a profoundly deep, dangerous crater. The true abyss. So while the Church always stresses, rightfully so, the great selfimposed evils and emptinesses of our lives, it s vital to be aware of external evil, as evidenced by scripture and the writings of the saints, so we can combat it via our relationship with God and the gifts of the Spirit. In the end, if we choose to stay in close relationship to our God, there s no room for anything else in that space. This is our greatest protection. Yours, Fr. Alex To Autumn Where are the songs of Spring? Ay, where are they? Think not of them, thou hast thy music too, While barred clouds bloom the soft-dying day, And touch the stubble-plains with rosy hue. John Keats Holy Chrismation Is one of the 7 Sacraments of the Orthodox Christian Church. Is the seal of the gift of the Holy Spirit, offered following the Sacrament of Holy Baptism. Is the most common way adult converts are welcomed into the Orthodox Christian Church. Is blessed and distributed to our churches by the Ecumenical Patriarch about once every decade. Come and See 2

Our Future Depends on You Doug Philipon On behalf of the Stewardship Committee, I want to thank those that attended our September 9 luncheon and Ministry Fair. Also, a heart feltthanks to our Sunday School youth who made ice cream sundaes for us to sweeten up the day! While many of us may still have been enjoying the last days of summer on the day of the luncheon and fair, we have now said goodbye to vacation time and hello to the fall and our regular slate of ministry and program activity. With this in mind, I kindly ask you to remember that we count on your support. We need you, and we especially need our Sunday School children back in our classrooms. Without your active participation, we are only a part of what we should be. Our church was built by our great grandparents, grandparents, parents and friends. We are now the Stewards of Saint Philip, and our future depends on your commitment, devotion and financial support. If you have not been in a while, please come back. If you have not made or followed through on your 2018 commitment, please do so. To download your 2018 Commitment Card, give online or learn more about our ministry, visit the user-friendly Stewardship Page: stphilip.org/stewardship/. Yervant Nahikian (Yervant Nahikian & Assoc., Hookset, NH), a well know church architect, has evaluated Saint Philip s flooring space and has started to prepare plans and renderings to enhance and beautify the interior of our worship space. The committee will be meeting with Yervant in early October to discuss his plans; then the committee will prepare to present these concepts to the community. Please look for upcoming communications in the Weekly Bulletin and other parish media that will provide more information as we move forward. 4 YOUTH Don t let anyone look down on you because you are young Sunday School Tippy Johnston We are excited to be back to Sunday School. The theme for the year is Community, which we will work to bring into Sunday School. This month, there will be a "Family Worship Day" (note the early start time because of the NFR Memorial) on Oct 7; on Oct 28, our friend Lori Pitsas will be leading all classes together in a group lesson. Thank you, Lori! If any of the adults in our church are interested in leading a lesson or discussing a topic with our children, please get in touch with Tippy, Bette or Father Alex. We would love to get more of our community involved in this ministry, and it would be an opportunity to connect more with the children of our parish. (This also helps with our theme for the year.) Finally, we welcome a new member to our Sunday School staff, Arthur Petren, who is teaching in the grade 6/7 Class. We also would like to thank the teachers that are continuing this year for their time and dedication: Brandy Chetsas, Rebecca Perkins, Jane Karageorge, Annie Juris, Jeff Basile, Betsy Moore, and Daniel Gioffre. Thank you to you all we appreciate all you do! Have a wonderful month! Come Dance with Us! Hellenic Dance Troupe is available to Saint Philip girls and boys 10 years old to 18 years old. We will finalize these events/dates in our upcoming meetings. 5 YOUTH...but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in faith and in purity. Timothy 4:12 MBC GOYA Fall Camp! Oct. 5-8 The Metropolis exceptional camping program expanded several years ago, with the exciting MBC GOYA Fall Camp. It allows our children to see friends from summer camp, make new friends and participate in fun, meaningful sessions. This year s program will run from Oct. 5-8! Please consider blessing your children with this opportunity. To register, and for more detailed information, please visit the MBC site today: metropolisofbostoncamp.org/fall.html. Altar Servers All boys of our parish (10-18) are invited to serve in the Altar. George Powell has been named our Captain and Thomas Johnston our Assistant Captain. We know they will lead our team well! Putting Worship First What Matters Most to Us? For Orthodox Christians, what matters most is our relationship with God and how do we approach this relationship? It is through worship, with the belief that all other good things flow from this great priority of Worship First. With this in mind, we lovingly ask our parents to help us by doing the following. Please... Bring your children to Divine Liturgy often and on time and worship with them (don t drop off). Impress on them that participating in any activity (JOY, Dance, etc.), means first attending Liturgy: No pray, no play! Thanksgiving Basket Drive What We Can All Do to Help Most of our parishioners are very familiar with the good work of our Outreach Ministry, especially during the holidays. This year the Thanksgiving Basket Drive will run Oct Nov. 18 and will offer us a hands-on way to reach out to those in need in context of our Orthodox Faith. Our Outreach Ministry is counting on our entire parish to get behind these efforts, including our youth and families. What we can do to help this and next month: ***Donate items to the Thanksgiving Drive (needs list on Pg. 8) ***Spread the word to family and friends so they can donate ***Pray for the hungry and poor Saintly Lives: Saint Luke, Oct. 18 Saint Luke is one of the Twelve Apostles and also one of the Evangelists, meaning he is the author of one of the Gospels that we read from in the Orthodox Church. He came from Antioch and was a physician by trade. One especially interesting thing is that he did not know Christ during his time on earth; instead, he was a disciple and companion of Saint Paul after his conversion. So he came to know our Lord through the friendship and leadership of another. His Gospel is often referred to as the Gospel of Compassion, as several of its narratives (such as the Prodigal Son) reveal the kindness, love and compassion of the Lord for us all. In addition to the Gospel, he is traditionally known as the author of the Acts of the Apostles. Getting Practical: Is it possible to be a friend of Jesus without actually having known Him while He was here on earth? The answer absolutely. Look at Saint Luke. The Church considers him an Apostle of Christ, though he never met Him; he was able to write an inspired Gospel, though he never heard the Lord speak with his own ears. Saint Luke was a true friend of Jesus, and we can be too. We simply have to love Him and believe in His teaching and sacrificial mission. This month, read Saint Luke s Gospel to your children (maybe before bed or anytime you can make time), and remind them that, like Saint Luke, they can be great friends with Jesus by sharing their hearts with Him every day of their lives. These have occurred at parishioner s homes and restaurant venues, and the goal has been to build friendship at Saint Philip and allow our couples to find strength in one another. We re on again this fall this time at Saint Philip. And the event will be truly unique: a beer tasting event! Brewers Jim Carleton and Maria Poulinas, new to our parish last spring, will guide us through the tasting, and delicious snacks will be offered by Pressed Café and generous parishioners. It will be a night not to be missed, and it will be a great opportunity to build friendship at Saint Philip. Reservations are needed: $30 per couple. Fall Orthodox Life: Oct. 14,21; Nov. 4,18 Badguys of the Bible The Bible is full of what we might perceive as Badguys & Badgals. From Ahab and Jezebel to Pilate and Judas, Holy Scripture presents us with a host of people who seem to either not understand, not care about or be completely determined to undermine God s plan. They are often dismissed and not deeply considered yet, their stories can a help us understand our own relationship with God, as well as the meaning of community, our parish s theme for the year. We ll meet on select Sundays during Fellowship Hour in the classrooms. Grab a coffee and join us! Women s Prayer Group & Bible Study October 11 & 25, 6 pm This fall, we are focusing on the Beatitudes, a source of great Biblical inspiration and direction for us all. Health & Wellness Ministry: To Your Health! Our Health and Wellness Ministry leaders invite you to participate in our monthly events, as well as further unique offerings we are working to develop. The Blood Pressure Clinic and ever-popular Therapeutic Massage will be offered Oct 3, Nov 7 & Dec 5, 10:30 am - 12 pm (massage by appointment). We are also planning a survey in October, seeking input as to what programming you would like, in addition to days and times you prefer. Further, we hope to be able to offer our community an expanded info program with bulletin board postings, as well as health related pamphlets and postings of programs presented by community organizations. Finally, the following items are in the pipeline: Opioid Addiction Presentation; Family Paint Day; Holy Unction (explanation and service with Fr. Alex); and a Blood Drive, dedicated to our beloved Kathey Richo who recently fell asleep in the Lord. Contact Joe Collet for details and massage appointments: joecollet48@comcast.net. Festival Needs Doug Philipon In our Aug/Sep Come & See, the Festival Committee made a case for expanding the leadership and listed some roles and ideas for spreading out the work load. We simply need to do a better job in running this event. Sadly, not one person reached back to say You can count on me! This past year was, by far, the most difficult. While it is easy to say someone else will do it, the reality is that others ended up doing 3 times the work to fill in the holes. Thanks for considering to offer us a helping hand.
