1 Fr. Alex s Message: Engaging Lent Did you survive Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year s? The holiday season (I can still hear Andy Williams singing as I write!) is a lovely time of year, but it brings with it a fair amount of stress. Most of us no doubt spent a good deal of time running errands, spending, buying (and returning!), entertaining and generally fussing over various holiday celebrations the past few months. I promise myself I won t each year; each year I seem to go through it all anyway. However, I do hope that our late fall Orthodox Life Series with Jim Skedros, the focused programs of our Women s Prayer Group and our thoughtful youth ministries activities helped you, and yours, engage the season on a spiritual level and helped you focus on what really matters. Maybe these efforts, and others, at least helped us manage the stress of the season somewhat, allowing more energy for us to encounter Christ and move closer to Him. And speaking of moving closer to our Savior, another opportunity is coming our way this month: Great Lent! Yes, we may be a bit taken off guard this year with Lent s early arrival, but this opportunity to engage a deeper prayer life, renewal and a new perspective on life can t come soon enough. While it may seem basic or simplistic, I want to take this opportunity to give you a rundown of the major events of Lent (leading up to Holy Week, which I ll address next month) and highlight some of the major Saint Philip events that connect to this Lenten journey. Immediately preceded by Judgment Sunday and Forgiveness Sunday (Feb. 11 & 18, respectively) and accompanied by our 3 Soul Saturday services (Feb. 10, 17 & 24), Holy and Great Lent begins on Monday, Feb. 19, known as Clean Monday. This is the day our Lenten journey officially begins; it is a day of prayer, abstention, reflection, commitment to those in need and spiritual dedication to the coming 40 days. In addition to the Soul Saturdays and beautiful Pre-Lenten Sunday services, several parish events will help us understand the importance of the beginning of Lent and help us engage the right frame of mind: Agape Soup Kitchen service on Feb. 15 & 19, OCMC Sunday (with guest speaker Markella Balasis) on Feb. 19 and the Senior outing to the Musuem of Russian Icons on Feb. 21. With the arrival of Clean Monday, our beloved cycle of weekly Lenten services also begins Wednesday PreSanctified Liturgies and Friday Salutations to the Theotokos services. Following 3 of the evening PreSanctifieds (we ll have some in the morning, too), in addition to dinner I ll offer a special Lenten Orthodox Life Series: Engaging Pastoral Issues, with the The Salutations services aim of answering common questions center around the mystery about Church practices and perspectives. of the Incarnation. If you have an idea for a certain topic you d like me to cover, contact me and I ll make a point to touch on it. The five Sundays of Lent are noteworthy as well, and I will work to highlight them for us in the Weekly Bulletin and our eblasts: Sunday of Orthodoxy (our Sunday Schoolers will process), Feb. 24; of Saint Gregory Palamas (March 4); of the Cross (March 11); of Saint John of the Ladder (March 18); and of Saint Mary of Egypt this year focusing on the Annunciation (March 25). Each Sunday is unique; come to them all! Finally, don t forget that Holy Confession, the Sacrament of reconciliation, is an integral part of Lent, an activity we should all try and engage during this holy time of year. Just contact me, and we ll make time. I hope this rundown helps us all truly engage the Lenten season! Fr. Alex Valentine s Day Verse I love thee to the depth and breadth and height my soul can reach. Elizabeth Barret Browning Take away love and our earth is a tomb. Genesis 29:20 Soul Saturdays: Feb. 10, 17 & 24 Each year just before and within the early stages of Lent, we have an opportunity to offer the Liturgies and memorials of the Soul Saturdays. Please consider making a koliva for one of the Saturdays, and offer Fr. Alex the names of your deceased loved ones to be read. Listing forms are in the Narthex, or you can your names to Fr. Alex. 3 STEWARDSHIP A New Year of Giving How Are We Doing? 2018 Budget for Stewardship: $142,500 Committed/Non-Comm. Stewards YTD: 75 Committed/Non-Comm. Amount: $51,995 Average Comm./Non-Comm. Amount: $852 Total Collected YTD: $10,655 If our faithful can work towards sending in committed resources in the beginning of the year, it would help us out immensely. Proper planning and execution of our ministries depend on a certain knowledge of what resources we have to work with, from our vital youth ministries to outreach to those in need. Finally, please note that if we are to meet our Stewardship Budget for 2018, and using the number of our faithful that gave in 2017 (220), the average gift commitment needed is $647 per Steward. While we know that this may not be possible for everyone, please consider increasing your gift if you can (or if you have not done so in a while). All offerings are greatly appreciated! Stewardship 2018 Still Work To Do The Stewardship Committee would like to thank all of those parishioners who offered their 2018 Commitment Cards in support of Stewardship Sunday and the launch of our 2018 campaign. We have received 59 YTD. While we were looking for a breakout year in 2017, there is still a reluctance of our faithful to participate in this ever so important component of our Church. Despite all of our outreach and optimism, we continue to achieve the same results. Why is this? Let us know how we can do better; share your ideas. Also, remember that Stewardship online giving is available to us all, via Faithful Direct with our webpage. We have had 4 people offer their 2018 Stewardship gifts online either using a lump sum or recurring monthly. It is simple and secure with just a few clicks. Take our shopping cart for a test drive: And don t forget to download and complete your 2018 Commitment Card! Every Member Update Doug Philipon While we are close to wrapping up the planning on the Church interior project, please note that we are still raising money for this and other key projects. If you have not offered any support for Every Member to date, or are able to recommit yourself with an additional gift, now is a great time to do so. As the name Every Member indicates, this is an effort for us all to join we cannot have success without all of us getting behind the restoration and beautification of our beloved Saint Philip. As a note, we will be recognizing all of those that contributed to Every Member from the beginning of our campaign in 2013 through the end of We will be producing a poster listing all our donors. This is a simple way to say thanks to our faithful. (If you d like to get in under the wire, please do so ASAP as we will extend this cutoff through dearly February!) Harbor Homes is a non-profit organization in Nashua that provides low-income, homeless, and disabled New Hampshire community members with affordable housing, primary and behavioral health care, employment training, and supportive services. This winter, our Sunday School will be leading a food drive for Harbor Homes, and our entire parish is asked to participate. On Souper Bowl Sunday, Feb. 4, and all through the month, please bring what you can from the following Needs List to the Giving Box in the hall: pasta sauce; Chef Boyardee; cereal; peanut butter; jelly; tuna fish; canned chicken; soups; baked beans; instant mashed potatoes; instant rice; juice (apple/ cranberry). Oratorical Festival 2018 Sunday, March 11 Many of our younger families may not have heard of the Saint John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival, which is a program of our Archdiocese carried out each year within every Metropolis. It offers 7-12th graders an engaging opportunity to learn more about their faith and share Orthodoxy by delivering thoughtful homilies to their young colleagues and entire parish families! Scholarship prizes range from $2,500 - $30,000. The 2018 list of topics is now available, and our team is preparing for the March 11 festival. To join our parish team and learn about the topics, contact Fr. Alex ASAP. It s not too late! Winter GOYA Camp Feb Each summer, a growing number of our children are discovering the wonder of the Metropolis camping ministry. They return with a renewed spiritual life and a desire to put what they ve learned into practice in our parish. But the experience doesn t end in August. Winter Camp keeps the flame alive during the colder months. In 2018, GOYA Winter Camp (ages 12-18) will run from Feb at the Saint Methodios Faith & Heritage Center; registration is now open, and space is limited. Register today, and engage this spiritually meaningful and fun opportunity for your child: metropolisofbostoncamp.org. Saintly Lives: Saint Theodora (Feb. 11) Saint Theodora was from Paphlagonia (an ancient area on the Black Sea) and was the daughter of a commander of a military regiment. She was married to the Roman Emperor Theophilus the Iconoclast. An iconoclast is a term for people of the ancient Church who believed we should not venerate icons they believed it was like worshipping wood and paint. In fact, during his reign, venerating icons was forbidden in the Church, and this caused a bitter controversy. However, Saint Theodora believed as the Church maintains today that when we venerate icons, we are not worshipping the wood and paint but simply allowing ourselves to be inspired by the holy memory of the saint or event depicted. She believed, as so many of us do, that they were windows to Heaven. So throughout her husband s reign, she secretly kept and venerated icons. When he passed away in the year 842, she came to power as the regent of her son Michael. With the support of a Church Council in 843, she reversed the iconoclastic policies of her husband and helped restore icons to the Church. This triumphant moment is celebrated by our Orthodox Church each year on the first Sunday of Lent, the Sunday of Orthodoxy! Getting Practical: It just so happens that the Sunday of Orthodoxy is coming on Feb. 25. Bring your favorite icon from home for the Sunday School procession at the end of the service, and celebrate the triumph of icons, in memory of our wonderful Saint Theodora. Come and See 5

8 COMMUNITY/Outreach Greek Food Festival Update: Time to Plan & Prepare for May 18 & 19! Outreach Snapshot AHEPA A few Sundays before Christmas, AHEPAns offered lovely fruit baskets to our senior citizens, as well as to a host of homebound parishioners. What a thoughtful gesture! Senior Citizen Outing, Feb. 21 Museum of Russian Icons Time to bake and cook. Yes, it is that time of year again and we are looking to begin firming up our preparation schedules. If you have not been part of these events, it is never too late to join us! Over the years, we have depended too much on the same people. Large groups of volunteers make quick work of it. What better way to make new friends and renew old acquaintances? Contact Jamie Pappas (thitsi@aol.com), Doug Philipon (duglas1004@gmail.com) or Joe Pappo (jpappo@nashualogistics.com). Celebrating our diversity. You may recall that 2 years ago we showcased some desserts from various countries that represent the background of our parishioners. Our diversity is extremely important to us, and we want to include Russian, Romanian, Ukranian and other delicacies again this year. Please let Doug Philipon know if you can offer a dish! The Museum of Russian icons, in Clinton, MA, is an amazing resource for our parish. Only a 30 minute drive from our Saint Philip, it is the only museum in the country dedicated to Russian icons, and it houses the largest collection of icons outside Russia. As part of our Lenten journey, we will offer a special trip for our senior citizens on the 21st, following PreSanctified Liturgy and a simple brunch. We ll plan to leave Saint Philip via carpool by 11:30 am for our 1 pm tour. We hope many of our seniors will join us. Holy icons are considered windows to Heaven, and we trust this outing will prove an inspiration for us during this holy time of year. The tour fee will be covered by the Church, and you are welcome to make an offering for the mission of the museum. Joining us? Please confirm with Cheryl Petren by Feb. 19: office@stphilipnh.org. Souper Bowl Sunday of Caring Feb. 4 Each year on Super Bowl Sunday, thousands of congregations across the country participate in the Souper Bowl of Caring. For the 5th year in a row, we look forward to being a part of this effort. Our JOY members decorated two pots during an activity last month; please bring an extra dollar and/or canned goods for the pots or Giving Box (see the Harbor Homes food drive article on Pg. 5).
