1 Fr. Alex s Message: Ready for the Change? That change in the air it s not here yet, but one day, not too long from now, you ll feel it perceive it. You know the one. You ll trudge outside early in the morning, maybe to let the dog out or ready the car to drop your children off at school, and something will be different. It will dawn on you that the warmth and humidity of all those summer days have finally taken leave; you ll detect a little crispness in the grass where you walk, evidence of a crunchy frost. You ll look up at that deep blue early autumn sky; you ll shiver a bit as a drafty wind cruises through your backyard. Robert Frost painted a vivid picture of this coming change in one of his most beautiful and for us, most timely poems, October : O hushed October morning mild, Thy leaves have ripened to the fall; Tomorrow s wind, if it be wild, Should waste them all. The crows above the forest call; Tomorrow they may form and go. For sure, it won t be long before the winds of late September and October have taken down the leafy memories of another memorable summer. There s a little sadness in this but also a certain excitement. This change in the air can signal a fresh start, a new beginning, a new way of looking at our lives. Our children and grandchildren experience this with the start of the new school year; we can all experience something similar if we decide to let this change in the air inspire and inform us as well. Change, in the end, can be a very good thing, especially concerning our spiritual lives and commitment to the life of the Church. This fall, I ask you to join me in trying out a little change. First and foremost, let s do everything we can on Sunday mornings to put worship first. This entails being present at Divine Liturgy, ideally at least in time to hear the Gospel reading, the ultimate weekly how to live guide offered to us by the Church. Worship is so vital to our lives as Orthodox Christians that everything else we do here Cont. Sunday School Blessing Sep. 16, 1st Day of Classes Just before Holy Communion on this special Sunday, Fr. Alex will lead us in a blessing service for our Sunday School children and their families, as well as our teachers, as they embark on the 1st day of their school year. We hope and pray our students enjoy a year of learning, friendship, fun and spiritual growth. Voices of Faith This liturgical reading program, for children and adults, will continue as of Sep. 9. Contact Fr. Alex to read the Epistle throughout the fall. Ready for the Change? (continued) at Saint Philip doesn t make sense without it. Worship gives everything context and reason, from Sunday School and Choir to Parish Council and our many social events. Second, commit to learning and enrichment for our children and all of us. Within the following pages, you ll see a great deal for our youth, and parishioners of all ages, from Sunday School and JOY to Women s Prayer Group and Choir. Third and finally, let s do something daring and allow ourselves to let Christ change our lives. Personal holiness is possible and expected! We are called not only to be Orthodox Christians for a half hour or hour on a Sunday but each and every day. The way we think, speak, make decisions, act, carry ourselves all of it can and should be guided by our relationship with Christ. Change is hard but, again, it can be good. And anything worth doing usually has its challenges. There s a change in the air, and it s nothing to be scared of but a challenge you and I can embrace. Fr. Alex The Elevation of the Holy Cross Is celebrated each year on Sept 14. Reveals the extent of Christ s suffering for our sake and the depth of His love. Reminds us that we are called to take up our own crosses and to follow Him throughout our lives. Challenges us to view the Cross not as jewelry or just another symbol but a way of life and central to our identity. Approaching the Faith: Can I Become Orthodox? Many members of our parish family who are not yet Orthodox Christian may wonder about how one enters into the Faith. For some, Chrismation may be sufficient for others, Baptism and Chrismation will be the proper route. But for all, there is a clear, approachable and inspirational course of study, prayer and reflection that can be accomplished with Fr. Alex. He would be very happy to explain the process and answer questions. Please contact him to begin this joyous endeavor. Come and See 32

3 stewardship Progress Report for 2018 Stewardship Giving As of July 24, the financial aspect of our Stewardship giving status at Saint Philip is as follows: 74 Committed Stewards have offered 2018 Commitment Cards, with a total pledged amount of $54, non-committed Stewards have offered a total amount of $40,112 The total combined Stewardship offering thus far totals $94,857 While we appreciate the generous, thoughtful giving of all our Stewards, please do not neglect completing your 2018 Commitment Card, which helps us plan for each year and, most importantly, takes into account the time and talent aspects of Stewardship, in addition to the financial aspect. In the end, all three must be enacted within our parish to fulfill our mission of bringing the Gospel to the world. One of the goals of the Stewardship Committee is to keep our parishioners informed as to the importance of being a committed Steward of Saint Philip. This is one of the goals of the recently initiated $5 A Week More Program. We launched the program by sending out a letter to 375 parishioners to express the urgency of building on our current giving levels; this letter was carefully worded in hopes that each of us would reflect on just what the Church means to us and that we would continue to support Saint Philip as an important part of our lives. While we received a total of 34 responses specific to the $5 A Week More Program, there was also an overwhelming number of other gifts from our faithful towards pledges and diverse offerings. Our sincere thanks go out to all these individuals for their generosity. And while it is still early, we anticipate success and remain hopeful that others will join us in this very important campaign. Please help us make 2018 a breakout year where we inspire you to revisit the importance of your Church. Help us move the needle of $5 A Week More from 34 to 134. We appreciate all that you do for our Church and hope that together, we can finish strong in Finally, remember that extra yellow $5 A Week More envelopes are in the Narthex, and that you can give online anytime at our Stewardship Page: stphilipnh.org/stewardship/. Every Member Campaign Approaching the Church Flooring Initiated back in 2013 with the support of our parish General Assembly, our Every Member Capital Campaign has since enabled significant improvements to our campus, especially the brilliant refinishing of our dome and towers back in the late summer and fall of Along with appropriate action to make our sidewalks safe, our campaign s major focus, now, is the flooring of the Narthex, Nave and Sanctuary. The committee has been meeting regularly to discuss needs and possibilities, and we are working with an architect to develop an appropriate, beautiful and timeless design to present to our faithful. More to come soon, and thanks to all for your ongoing support. Contact Jorge Panteli to learn more about the Every Member Capital Campaign: jpanteli@comcast.net. Come and See 3

Saintly Lives: Saint Euphrosyne, Sep 25 Saint Euphrosyne ( ) was a person of great faith, even from her early childhood. Her Father, Paphnutius, was wealthy and offered her a luxurious, comfortable life. But this did not sit well with Euphrosyne; she felt as if she were being calling to a more humble life. So she made a promise to God to live quietly in prayer and be married only to His Church. But Paphnutius wanted what he thought was best for his daughter, so he began pressuring her to marry a wealthy young man. To avoid breaking her sacred vow, she had to act. So she renamed herself Smaragdus, disguised herself as a man and entered a monastery. In later years, her father, who was bereaved at losing his precious daughter, came to the monastery in search of advice and comfort. Though he didn t recognize her, he received consel from his very own daughter, who had been living as a monk all this time. Shortly before her passing, she revealed the long-kept secret to her father, assuring him that she had lived the best life possible, one lived close to God. Getting Practical: So often in life, we know that God is guiding us in a certain direction. Oftentimes, this direction is not the easiest one, and it is very easy to instead follow paths that are not good for us. The life of Saint Euphrosyne inspires us to follow our holy instincts. 10 COMMUNITY/OUTREACH 2018 Festival Reflections The 2018 St. Philip Greek Food Festival is now a distant memory, and we are pleased to report that it was wildly successful, despite the torrential rains on Saturday. Our Friday sales smashed previous records, and we sold out of everything by Saturday evening. We all deserve a huge round of applause and, on behalf of the Festival Committee, a warm thanks to all that played a role in our success. As for numbers, we grossed a grand total for the 2 days of $150,000! This included $80,900 on Friday and $64,800 on Saturday and $4,300 miscellaneous, including vendors and donations. Our Ad Book contributed an additional $20,500. What is significant is that we grossed what many other festivals do in 3 or 4 days in just 2 days! Planning for 2019 is underway; see the enclosed Festival insert and get involved! Outreach Snapshot Welcome Committee This committee of our Parish Council strives to welcome new individuals and families into our Church, helping them connect with our ministries. Daughters of Penelope A Possibility for the Next Generation The Giving Box We are interested in reviving a Daughters of Penelope (DOP) chapter in Nashua for women ages 18 and older. DOP was established in 1929 with the objective of promoting Hellenism, education, philanthropy, civic responsibility and family/individual excellence. We are hopeful that women in our greater Nashua area would be interested in resurrecting the local chapter. Among the national projects the DOP supports are Cooley s Anemia, women s domestic violence centers in Alabama and Brockton, Massachusetts, as well as scholarship programs to worthy high school and college students. Several Nashua students have been the recipients of scholarships from District 9 DOP over the years. To learn more, kindly contact Diana Paskaley ( ; charliediana@comcast.net) or Vicky Kallan ( ; Vgkallan@comcast.net). An informational meeting is forthcoming, and please spread the word about this opportunity. Throughout August and September, please bring canned and non-perishable items to the colorful Giving Box in the Fellowship Hall for our ongoing ministry to the Nashua Soup Kitchen & Shelter. Highly desirable items include peanut butter, oatmeal, cereal, granola bars, pasta and soup. Remember, action on behalf of those in need is a vital part of our Christian Faith try picking up a few items for the box every time you grocery shop!
