It s the first season of the Christian year where we wait with great anticipation for the coming of Christ. It s a season of Holy waiting: waiting for God s peace to come to earth waiting for the light of Christ to shine waiting for the shepherds, the angels, and the Christ child. Advent lasts for four Sundays, leading up to Christmas Day. In worship, we ll make our way toward Christmas through the season of Advent. We ll light the Advent candles, one more each week, as we watch for the light of Christ. We ll sing hymns celebrating the miraculous gospel story in verse and song. We ll hear the prophets words of warning and of promise. We ll tell the stories leading to Jesus birth. We ll wonder and marvel with the shepherds and hear the angels announcement with great joy. We ll journey to Bethlehem in our hearts and minds, waiting for the birth of the Christ child. And then we ll celebrate Christmas: the birth of Jesus, God-with-us, Emmanuel! December 1 - Prepare for Advent Please join us for a Community Tree Lighting and Carol Sing on the front lawn at 5:00 p.m. A hot chocolate and cider bar will be open! This is a great opportunity to bring your family, friends, and neighbors! December 2 - First Sunday in Advent We begin Advent with symbols of the season displayed in the sanctuary. The first candle of Advent will be lit as we prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus. After worship, all are invited to Davis Hall for the Advent Fair. Start the season with crafts, fellowship and treats. For the young and young-at-heart! December 9 Second Sunday in Advent The second candle of Advent will be lit. Poinsettias will grace the sanctuary in memory and honor of loved ones. December 16 - Third Sunday in Advent The third candle of Advent will be lit. Christmas Pageant with Lessons and Carols will be presented during 10:00 a.m. worship. Children, youth and adult choirs will sing and dramatize the intrigue and wonders with the coming and birth of Jesus. December 23 Fourth Sunday in Advent The fourth candle of Advent will be lit. Please share in the Christmas Joy Offering. December 24 - Christmas Eve 6:00 p.m. Worship will feature the Children s Nativity Tableau. (If K-5th grade children would like to participate, contact the office by December 12.) 8:00 p.m. Candles and Carols with the Sanctuary Choir. Our Christmas celebration continues through Epiphany, January 6 Worship.

2 Grateful for the Past; Hopeful for the Future December is a wonderful time to look back on past events and experiences over the past year, and we have so much to be thankful for here at Valley! Just to name a few: We celebrated our first Blessing of the Animals worship service outside on a beautiful July day! The combined choir song on Easter morning, April 1. There is always something very special about getting together children, youth, and adults to sing! Valley had two Habitat builds this year helping to build homes right here in Beaverton. A great Youth Group full of students, ready to learn, ready to serve and ready to have fun. The Sanctuary Choir singing the anthem, None other Lamb with cellist Zakk Banks. A new Confirmation Class full of students working to learn more about their faith and church. Awesome mission trip experiences for both High School and Middle to Wapato and Rev. Jeff Binder Salem full of growth and fellowship. The King s Kids musical Sermon on the Mound presented in April. The youth musical Land of the Lost and Found presented in October. This was first time the 6th-12th graders presented their own musical. Supporting one of our choir section leaders, Grace Skinner, as she left for grad school. Donna Carlson joined the staff as our Director for Children s Ministries. On the chalk board, we always have one column for Praises and one for Prayers. Never does a Sunday go by without them sharing who or what situation to pray for. Never a Sunday goes by without hearing a praise as well in what God is doing in their or another s life. December is also a wonderful time to begin to dream about the possibilities for 2019 and beyond. What are your hopes for the coming year? What does Valley Community envision for the future? Here are a few of my hopes for the coming year: I envision us inviting the neighborhood over more public events! I hope to start a Doctor of Ministry program that will strengthen my skills as your pastor. I hope for transformative worship experiences for all involved. I dream of more members and friends listening for how God is calling them to serve in order to make this church, this neighborhood, and this world a better place. 3 2019 Stewardship Campaign This time of the year gives us a chance to reflect on all that has transpired during 2018 here at Valley. Valley has provided each of us opportunities to participate and grow in our faith. Pastor Jeff has been on staff for more than a year now and he has added a new vitality to the programs and events which happen all year long. Various remodeling and renewing projects to the church facilities are coming to a conclusion as well. Annual pledging is vital in construction of our 2019 budget which is designed to continue the music programs, sacraments, and prayer during worship, the commitments to care for the young and old, the opportunities to learn and the serving of others through various programs. The stewardship campaign for 2019 is moving forward. Dedication Sunday was on November 18 and as of this writing on November 20, pledges have been received from 92 members and friends totaling $282,398. That total is slightly more than the comparable days in The total pledges for 2018 were 139 pledges totaling $398,505. If you have not received the letter and pledge card that were sent previously, please call the church office who can send a new package to you. Session would appreciate a prompt reply to enable them to finalize the 2019 budgets. Prayerfully yours, Stewardship committee Mission Endowment Committee Awards Grants The Mission Endowment Committee awarded seven grants to applicants during the Fall 2018 cycle. A total of $10,500 was given to four local, and three international recipients. The grants support housing, health, clothing, social services, and mission. Members of the Mission Endowment Committee are Jan Bellis-Squires, Robert Hayes, Mary Kelly, David Marquis, Carol Powers, and Elaine Rea. Janet Adkins is the Mission Committee liaison. That's right - 30 years! In that time, we ve built over 100 new homes and repaired or rehabilitated 70 additional homes. In 2018 we sold seven houses and are under construction on the final three homes at Allen Estates in Beaverton. We ve started our new neighborhood, Denney Gardens, also in Beaverton. When complete, this project will have 16 homes, six of which are now under way. We continue to make headway with our repair program: In 2018 we repaired 17 houses in Washington County (including the homes of eight veterans), nine of them were full roof replacements at a cost of over $100,000! We have 11 families in the program right now, putting in sweat equity and working towards the day when they, too, can become homeowners, as well as eight families who have applied for the repair program and are just waiting for our funding to come through and winter to be over. We are especially thankful to the Valley Community Presbyterian Church community for donating over $114,000 in the past 23 years to help us build affordable housing. We are humbled and blessed by your support. If you are looking to the future, we have our annual Breakfast & Lunch fundraiser scheduled for Friday, May 10, They will be followed immediately by our 30th anniversary celebration, also on May 10. We d love to see you there. December 2018 valleycommunity.org Page 3

4 Valley Book Group The Valley Book Group will meet on Friday, December 7, 2018, in the Fireside Room at 10:00 a.m. to discuss the Pulitzer and Nobel Prizes-winning book, The Old Man and the Sea, by Ernest Hemingway. This short book tells the story of an old Cuban fisherman and his relentless battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. In classic Hemingway style, it follows the well-known themes of courage in the face of defeat and of personal triumph from loss. All are welcome to bring their own coffee and to join in the discussion of this thoughtprovoking book. Dining for Women Dining for Women at Valley ends our year of collective giving by learning about GRAVIS in India. GRAVIS s project Improving the Health of Women and Girls in the Thar Desert (IHWG) improves the health of women and girls in drought-afflicted areas. This program brings self-reliance, leadership, and well-being to women and girls. Benefits include a better understanding of women and girls health needs, promotion of gender equality, enhanced food and nutrition security through horticulture, and availability of medicines within the villages. This sustainable, community-based program also serves as a solid replicable model for other arid regions. Please join our last meeting of the year for a bountiful potluck lunch, an enriching educational report on this worthy nonprofit chosen as DFW s December grantee and experience the joy of making a donation that will do so much at GRAVIS. We meet at 11:30 a.m. in the Fireside Room after worship on Sunday, December 16. All are welcome. Advent Fair Sunday, December 2 is the first Sunday in Advent and also Valley s Advent Fair! There will be fun and festivities planned to happen after worship in Davis Hall until 12:30 p.m. There will be holiday crafts and activities for the young and the young-at-heart. Pizza will be available for a small donation. Other offerings include coffee, cider and cookies! Holiday music will fill the air and there might even be a little singing. Come join the fun as a participant or as a helper. Tell your friends. Tell your family. Come one. Come all! Christmas Pageant with Lessons & Carols On December 16, Valley s Sanctuary Choir, Youth Choir, and Children s Choirs will present a revised Christmas pageant. Although similar to years past, the new production will include new music, carols for the congregation to join in singing, and the scriptural lessons found in a traditional Lessons & Carols format. Beautiful choreography, stunning costumes, and angelic children s voices will leave you with that deliciously warm feeling that the Christmas season is truly in full swing. The Christmas Pageant with Lessons & Carols will take place during our 10:00 a.m. worship service. Invite your neighbors, friends, and family to join us that day. Annual Christmas Senior Luncheon Tis the Season to Be Jolly! All are invited to the Christmas Senior Luncheon on Wednesday, December 12 at noon in Armitage Hall. Our adorable preschool children will entertain us with a couple of Christmas songs. Then it is our turn to sing favorite Christmas carols under the direction of David Jimerson, accompanied on piano by the talented Bob Hinson. Bring a friend to enjoy a lovely lunch, meet new friends and enjoy some Christmas music. Memorial Garden Update Progress is being made on the, Memorial Garden, located just outside the Fireside Room. A large inviting patio is surrounded by serene gardens and a peaceful bubbler rock. Due to the generosity of so many of you we have purchased beautiful plants. 5 Christmas Joy Offering During this Advent Season we celebrate leadership; past, present and future, through support of the Christmas Joy Offering. We do so because church leaders greatly impact our lives of faith, walking with us down the path to be more like Jesus. Half of the Christmas Joy Offering honors the faithfulness of current and retired church workers and their families in need. Thanks in part to support from this Offering, church workers can receive critical financial assistance to support them through life s challenging circumstances. The Assistance Program of the Board of Pensions helps them not to have to choose between housing and food. Half of the Christmas Joy Offering benefits the Assistance Program, enabling it to help over 300 households with income supplements and more than 250 households with housing supplements. Shared and Emergency Grants from the Board of Pensions helped 255 households facing times of great financial need or uncertainty due to unforeseen circumstances. The other half of the Christmas Joy Offering supports the historic commitment of the PC(USA) to education and leadership development through three PC(USA) racial/ethnic schools and colleges Menaul School in Albuquerque, New Mexico; Presbyterian Pan American School in Kingsville, Texas; and Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Our future racial ethnic church leaders are able to receive much-needed assistance while they discover and pursue their professional goals at Presbyterian-related schools and colleges. Your gifts allow these ministries, which Presbyterians have carried out for nearly 140 years, to continue. Please give generously! Presbyterian Women of the Synod to Gather Presbyterian Women of the Synod of the Pacific will gather at Mercy Center, Burlingame, California, April 5-7, 2019, for the triennial Synod Gathering, with the theme Hearts of Stone to Hearts of Love. The author of the Horizons Bible Study, Eugenia Gamble, will preview the study: Love Carved in Stone: A Fresh Look at the 10 Commandments. Workshops will include one on Eco-Justice, and the Rev. Sharon Edwards (currently serving First Presbyterian Church, Corvallis) will be the worship and music leader. The Synod Gathering is a great opportunity to learn from each other, experience stimulating and informative programs and dynamic worship, and stretch and strengthen connectional ties. The deadline for registering is March 15. Registration forms will be available in the church office. Poinsettias to Grace the Sanctuary Poinsettias will enhance the sanctuary chancel on the 3rd Sunday of Advent and Christmas in memory and honor of our loved ones. If you wish to participate, please provide the name of the honoree and a donation of $15.00 noted to VCPC Flower Fund in an envelope, and place it in the offering plate, or deliver it to the church office by Monday, December 17. Honorees names will be published in the Christmas Eve bulletin. Participants may take their poinsettias home after Christmas Eve services. Valley Christian Preschool Stuffed Animal Drive Valley Christian Preschool will be supporting the Ronald McDonald House this Christmas season by sponsoring a stuffed animal drive. We invite you to join us in this effort by donating a new, unwrapped stuffed animal to be given as a gift to a child staying at Ronald McDonald House. Donation bins will be located in the front entry and preschool wing through Thursday, December 13. Salvation Army Giving Tree The Salvation Army Giving Tree is located in the front entryway. Valley is hosting a single mother and her two teenage children. Take a tag and bring the unwrapped item (along with the tag) to be placed under the tree by 1:00 p.m. on Monday, December 10. Your generosity will ensure this family will have a very merry Christmas! Pastor Jeff has a new cell number: Please use for after hours pastoral emergencies. December 2018 valleycommunity.org Page 5

A candle was lit for every name read on All Saints Sunday which honored those who had died in the past year. Above and left: On a Saturday afternoon, five Valley members and friends took part in the Habitat build at Allen Estates. Four people helped clean up a unit that will soon be turned over to the new owner. One worked on the unit next door to put up dry wall. Participants need not purchase the book or read ahead. We will be meeting in the Fireside Room from 5:00-6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 5. If child care is needed, contact kurtztk@comcast.net. Thank You Virginia and Ed Vaughan, and the family of Dr. M. Arthur Nesmith wish to express appreciation to the Valley congregation for their prayers during Art s illness, and for the kind expressions of sympathy following his death. Prayers We pray for new babies: Tate Blitz, born November 9 in Bangkok, Thailand. Proud great grandparents are De & Esta Sherwood. Edith Blackburn Anderson, born October 30 to Scott and Adrianne Webb-Mitchell Anderson. Proud great grandparents are Liz Mitchell and Jim & Helen Webb. Vivienne Sue Shipman, born November 1 to Jason & Whetherly Shipman. Proud grandparents are Lee & Sandy Cundiff. Earth Care Corner A recent recycling update sent out to everyone in Washington County listed the Top 5 Things to Keep Out of Your Recycling Bin and Why! This information is definitely worth repeating: 1. Plastic bags: They get caught in the machinery at recycling facilities. What to do? Take used plastic bags to a grocery store for recycling, reuse them or put them in the trash. 2. Plastic clamshells: They are difficult to sort and currently there is no market for them. What to do? All produce clamshells and to-go containers should go into the garbage. 3. Styrofoam: This can only be recycled at a specialty facility so it should not go into mixed, curbside recycling. What to do? Take it to Agilyx or put it in the garbage. 4. Frozen food boxes and trays: These contain plastic to repel moisture and this plastic cannot be separated from the paper. What to do? Put them in the garbage. 5. Coffee cups and lids: The cups are lined with plastic that like frozen food boxes cannot be separated from the paper. What to do? These go into the garbage. It sounds like a lot is going into the garbage! Other more sustainable choices would be: purchase and use net produce bags to avoid taking the plastic bags at the store (Messenger article October 2018), avoid purchasing items in plastic clamshells, recycle styrofoam at Agylix (Messenger article July 2018), and use a reusable coffee mug next time you purchase to a hot to-go drink. All Are Invited to Cicely, Alaska! Join us on Wednesdays from 5:00-6:00 p.m. beginning January 9 in the Fireside Room as we cozy up by the fire, drink some hot beverages, and discuss one of our favorite television shows of the 1990 s, Northern Exposure! This class will run for five weeks, and cover some of the episodes of season 1 as we relate various biblical and spiritual themes to the show and to our lives. Not familiar with the show? No problem! We will be watching an episode each class, and Pastor Jeff will be sure to give us the background needed to properly enjoy! This will be lots of fun, and appropriate for all ages! Children s Nativity Tableau ALL children are invited to participate in the Nativity Tableau at the 6:00 p.m. Family Service on Christmas Eve. The Nativity Tableau is a simple and special way for children to experience Christmas Eve. During the service, children age 4 through 5 th grade, dressed in delightful costumes, will form the Nativity Scene on the chancel and sing Away in a Manger. Perhaps your child or grandchild would enjoy being a sheep...an angel...a shepherd...a wiseman...mary...joseph...the donkey! We will have one short rehearsal to try on the costumes and practice the song on Wednesday, December 19, from 5:00-6:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. Parents with young children are asked to remain at the rehearsal. director of Children s Music, Amy Rheingans, at amy@valleycommunity.org to let her know your child/grandchild/relative in town for the holidays/ etc. would like to participate. If you forget to , just show up for the rehearsal. This event is intentionally kept simple so children can join in with ease. Page 10 valleycommunity.org December 2018
