For those of you who have not attended a Taste of Norway before, it is an array of traditional Norwegian delicacies to sample that has been prepared by members. It s a wonderful opportunity to taste a variety of entres from Lefse to Frukt Suppe (usually no lutefisk) all made by members. The cost for the meal is $7.00 per person if you do not bring a dish to share. The meal is free for any person who brings a food item. If you would like to bring a food item, call Jan Schmidt at to let her know what you are bbringing. Prepared food items need to be brought to the Elks by 5:30. A prospective member may be brought as a guest, and the cost for that person will be $7.00. If they do become a member the night of the dinner, the guest is free. Oh, yes, and a spouse needs to either bring a dish to share or pay the $7.00. Hopefully, everyone is thinking about what they can contribute to the Silent Auction that takes place during the Taste of Norway. The items can be lefse or other baked goods, treats, handcrafts, baskets of items or any Scandinavian or Christmas items. If you are bringing a gently used Scandinavian item, please make sure it is clean. Donations can be brought to the Elks Club between 2pm 5pm on Monday, Nov. 17th. If youare unable to do this, please call Mary or Wayne Bjoraker at to make other arrangements. We need to know how many tables to set up for the donations. The proceeds from this event will be used by Nortonna Lodge for programs and events. The more items, the more fun and moresuccessful the Silent Auction will be! December Christmas Party The December meeting will be at the Elks with a soup and sandwich dinner at 6 pm. You will not want to miss this event. Gloria Coulter will lead the Nordic Notes in a few songs; and of course, we can plan on singing a few favorite Christmas carols. North Star Nordic Dancers Then the North Star Nordic Dancers will be our exciting entertainment for the evening. They perform village dances from Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Denmark to live music performed on the fiddle, guitar, nyckelharpa (Swedish key fiddle), hardingfele (Norwegian Hardanger fiddle), and mouth harp. We wear traditional folk costumes from Sweden, Norway, and Continued on page 2
2 Facts The mission of Sons of Norway is to promote and to preserve the heritage and culture of Norway, to celebrate our relationship with other Nordic Countries, and provide quality insurance and financial products to our members. Sons of Norway was organized as a fraternal benefit society by 18 Norwegian immigrants in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on January 16, The purposes and goals of the Founding Fathers were to protect members of Sons of Norway and their families from the financial hardships experienced during times of sickness or death in the family. Over time, the mission of Sons of Norway was expanded to include the preservation of Norwegian heritage and culture in our Society. We have grown since our beginning and are now the largest Norwegian organization outside Norway. We promote Norwegian traditions and fraternal fellowship through the cultural and social opportunities offered in local lodge and district lodge activities. These activities include language camps and classes, scholarships, handicrafts, cooking and heritage classes, heritage programs, sports programs, travel opportunities, Viking Magazine, and outreach programs sponsored by the Sons of Norway Foundation. We offer financial protection through our Financial Benefits Counselors to Sons of Norway members and their families against the hardships of sickness and death through a variety of quality insurance programs. The Facts (as of December 31, 2013) Total Members: 57,178 Members in the United States: 54,435 Members in Canada: 2,499 Members in Norway: 1,244 Christmas Party Continued... Finland. Their dances range from smooth and graceful to springy and energetic. They feature lots of turning and precise footwork. They dance primarily in couples rather than in sets or lines, as many International folk dances are danced. The Nordic Notes repertoire includes schottisches, mazurkas, waltzes, snoas, and many forms of pols and polska Cultural Corner KOSELIG, this is probably the most used word in the present day norwegian vocabulary. But what does it mean? Thats the problem, it cannot really be defined. Most english speakers translate it by cosy, but that term doesn t even begin to cover everything that koselig can express. The concept is difficult to translate to those who do not live in Norway, but basically anything can (and should) be koselig: a house, a conversation, a dinner, a person. It defines something/someone/an atmosphere that makes you feel a sense of warmth very deep inside in a way that all things should be: simple and comforting. So, with that in mind...the recent group that went to Mindekirken and Ingebretsen s, and there were 15 of us, plus a great Norwegian bus driver...could be described as koselig. It was just that feeling the whole day. I think everyone enjoyed it and we will do it again, soon. Our 4th annual Norwegian meatball supper is coming up again on Saturday, December 6. Mark your calendars! It will be at the History Center this year, so that should be fun, the price is the same, a bargain at $ Tickets are now available by calling Nina Zak or Gloria Coulter. The dinner runs from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. This is open to the public and our biggest fundraiser of the year for our lodge. It s a great way to reach out to the community and share our heritage with them, and we ask each person to bring a food item for the local food shelf, so it really is an outreach project as well as a great time for fellowship among our members too. Many of you have helped with this dinner in the past, and several signed up to help at the last meeting, but I still need helpers!! Please call me if you havn t signed up to help yet and would like to. We need several cookie makers, beet pickle makers, servers, table helpers, etc. Our members will also be demonstrating lefse making and selling lefse at Christmas in the Village at the Historical society, on Friday evening, December 5 from 4:30pm to 8:30pm. We need lefse made ahead of time and packaged, 4 rounds for $5.00 to sell that evening, if you can make lefse for this, please let me know. Did you know? That we have a lodge Library with almost 100 books to lend out to members? Please call Harriet Matchan at if you want to borrow a book from the library, she is our lodge librarian. Did you know? That there is a lodge book club that reads Scandinavian Literature? If you want to join this club, you are very welcome. The club meets at Continued on next page
3 Morehouse Place the last Monday of every month at 10:00am. They meet from September until May of each year. Please call Marj Zimmerman at if you are interested in joining. And lastly, did you know that our lodge has a Hardanger Group? They meet once a month at members homes (from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.) to do their Hardangersom projects together. If you already know or would like to learn how to do Hardanger and are interested in being a part of this group, please call Ginny Ruppe ( ) or Kathy Espe ( ) or Avonne Anderson (507-) for more information. Ha Det! Kari Dyngeland, Cultural Director Hurtigruten ship latest to run aground November 4, 2014 The coastal voyage Hurtigruten ship Nord Norge was still tied up at Skjervøy in Northern Norway on Tuesday after it grounded just after its scheduled departure Monday night. The ship wouldn t sail until inspectors could examine its hull. The vessel was heading southbound on its way to Tromsø when it hit ran aground but it was quickly able to free itself and return to the pier. No one on board was injured. Anne Marit Bjørnflaten of Hurtigruten told news bureau NTB that inspectors from vessel classification society Det Norske Veritas were due during the course of the day. Then we ll decide what to do further, she said. The vessel had 201 passengers on board when it apparently ran into a breakwater on the way out of Skjervøy s harbour. Some reported that it made a big noise and passengers jumped when the vessel stopped abruptly. The grounding reportedly left a gash on the side of the ship about a meter long. Some passengers left the vessel in Skjervøy while others may continue their voyage on board the next Hurtigruten vessel sailing down the coast, the Trollfjord. The weather in the area was poor, with full storm warnings up along the coast from western Finnmark south to Lofoten. The grounding follows that of another cruiseship off Lofoten earlier this week, the Marco Polo, which hit a sandbar but eventually freed itself. (News in English.no) Queen Sara Thofson Sara Thofson, daughter of David and Suzanne Thofson, members of Nortonna Lodge, was crowned Miss Svenskarnas Dag at the 81st Svenskarnas Dag Festival at Minnehaha Park in Minneapolis last June. Tofson s Junior Royalty are Arabella Hupka of Edina and Aaron Nelson of Shakopee. The girls are in their Swedish National Folk Costumes. Next year the Swedes and the Norwegians are going to celebrate together in what is going to be called Scandinavian Festival, which will be held June 28th, 2015 at Minnehaha Park in Minneapolis

Need to elect a new Secretary at November meeting for 2015/2016 term. Adjourned MSA Respectfully submitted, Trudy Haugen, Secretary Gender quota put women on top of the pay scale (Nov. 10, 2014) After female quotas were introduced in publicly traded joint-stock companies (ASA companies) in Norway, more women are among the companies highest paid individuals, and more women are managers. Affirmative action forced ASA-companies to increase the share of female board members. This has led to more women being recruited for management positions. Generally speaking I am against affirmative actions, but in certain situations it is an efficient tool in order to implement change. It has definitely been in this case, says CEO Heidi Skaaret in Storebrand. Sissel Jensen, an associate professor at Norway s Business School, has studied the effect the female quotas have had on equality in the business sector. Our work shows that the share of female managers at the top level of ASA-companies have been doubled as a result of this reform, Jensen explains. Top level refers to the five highest paid individuals in the company. In December 2005, the government decided that all publicly traded joint-stock companies (ASAs) would be represented by both sexes at a 40 percent minimum. All companies that became ASAs after 2006 had to put the new law into effect from day one. Exisiting ASAs were given three years to fulfill the quota. The introduction of the law lead to strong debates. From 2002, when the reform was first agreed on, to 2011, the number of ASAs were reduced by almost half and converted into joint-stock companies that were not affected by the new law. Companies argued that they would not be able to find women who had the right qualifications for the positions. Now, however, results show that today s ASA companies have female chairs who are more qualified than before the reform was introduced. Therefore, the argument that it was not possible to find women with qualifications fell through, Jensen points out. The professor thinks that the reform has contributed to more female managers because of the boards influence on who gets hired for management positions. (Aftenposten)
