2 Pastor s Ponderings Having witnessed the financial meltdown of 2008 I believe it s safe to say, in one way or another, we are all familiar with the volatility and uncertainty of Wall Street....American writer and humorist Mark Twain had an interesting insight: October. This is one of the peculiarly dangerous months to speculate in stocks. The others are: July, January, September, April, November, May, March, June, December, August and February. Here are some other Wall Street words of wisdom: Buy low, sell high Never throw good money after bad Stock prices fall faster than they rise No one was ever ruined by taking a profit Kim Hubbard once said, The only safe way to double your money is to fold it once and put it in your hip pocket. There are very few certainties in this life especially in the stock market. It is, however, a very sure thing that God loves us, created us and desires for us to be in meaningful relationship with him. Let s invest in a sure thing! Adapted from: Jeff Spiller, Perceptions: Observations on Everyday Life, Volume II, (Durham, Inc., 2004), p. 42. Too often we fall prey to investing in that which enslaves us: the whims of our wants. Instead, God s desire is that we should invest our hearts into the certainty of His provision, that we would discover that God s provision is enough to meet all our needs, and that we would know the freedom such investment brings. To this end - the freedom in finding Enough through God s provision - this Fall we will embark on a congregational study of Adam Hamilton s book Enough. Please see page 8 for more information about the study. I pray you will consider taking part in this spiritual journey of investment: finding Enough through God s provision. Peace and Grace Pastor Tim Patterson TRUSTEES ON CALL IN SEPTEMBER Mike Lockard ( ) Dave Work ( ) Trustees on call, rather than Pastor Tim, should be called first in the case of a building emergency. Adult Sunday School There will be 3 Sunday School Electives for Adults to choose from: In September, the Wrestling with Words Sunday school class will be reading and studying John Irving s novel, A Prayer for Owen Meaney. Owen is a very odd child who becomes a very unusual young man. He is one of two eleven-year-old boys best friends playing a baseball game and hits a foul ball that kills his best friend s mother. The boy who hit the ball doesn t believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God s instrument (from the dust jacket). This moving and very funny novel is a story of belief and doubt. If you would like to share in the class, please contact Roy Rineer. Short Term Studies is designed to offer participants the opportunity to meet God and to grow through Bible study. Topics such as prayer, commitment, character, etc. will be studied in approximately 6-week sessions. Making use of study booklets which often incorporate Bible lessons with study questions, the class provides a welcoming atmosphere for those who might be new to a Bible study. The class meets in Fellowship Hall and is facilitated by Carol Rice Inquirers Class meets in Asbury 103. We are currently studying Feasts of the Bible. If you have been considering Sunday School, this is a GREAT time for a visit!!! This class is facilitated by Carrie Patterson
