1 THE PASTOR S PRESS JUNE 2016 In May, I attended a retreat for Lutheran and Episcopal clergy called, In the Breaking of the Bread: Finding Christ in Full Communion. The intent for the retreat was to foster deep reflections rooted in the full communion relationship between the Episcopal Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The ELCA is in full communion with The Episcopal Church, Presbyterian Church (USA), Reformed Church in America, United Church of Christ, The Moravian Church, and United Methodist Church. The ELCA website says this about what Full Communion means: Full communion is when two denominations develop a relationship based on a common confessing of the Christian faith and a mutual recognition of Baptism and sharing of the Lord s Supper. This does not mean the two denominations merge; rather, in reaching agreements, denominations also respect differences. These denominations worship together, may exchange clergy and also share a commitment to evangelism, witness and service in the world. Each entity agrees that even with differences, there is nothing that is church-dividing. A central document to Lutherans is the Augsburg Confession. Article VII of the Augsburg Confession states that the true unity of the church is present where the gospel is rightly preached and sacraments rightly administered. The ELCA is committed to this model of full communion as an authentic expression of Christian unity. For the ELCA, the characteristics of full communion are theological and missiological implications of the gospel that allow variety and flexibility. (Cont. next page)

They will include at least the following, some of which exist at earlier stages: common confessing of the Christian faith mutual recognition of Baptism and a sharing of the Lord's Supper, allowing for joint worship and an exchangeability of members mutual recognition and availability of ordained ministers to the service of all, subject to the disciplinary regulations of other denominations common commitment to evangelism, witness and service means of common decision-making on critical common issues of faith and life mutual lifting of any condemnations that exist between denominations. It is good for us to be working together toward greater unity in the Body of Christ! 3 COMMUNITY NURSE CORNER Because we talked about how to protect your skin in last month s newsletter, this month we will talk about why and things to know. Skin cancer (melanoma, the most serious) is caused by damage to the skin from ultraviolet rays (sunshine). People with more than 100 moles are at higher risk for skin cancer. Therefore, it is important to know your skin, o that a good look at it at least once a month. Fortunately, there is a simple alphabet to help us recognize skin changes. A = Asymmetry.. draw a line through a mole, the two halves will not match, meaning it is asymmetrical, a warning sign for melanoma., B = Borderline Irregularity A benign mole has smooth, even borders, unlike melanomas. The borders of an early melanoma tend to be uneven. The edges may be scallo33ped or notched. C= Color most benign moles are all one color often a single shade of brown. Having a variety of colors is another warning signal. A number of different shades of brown, tan or black could appear. A melanoma may also become red, white or blue. D = Diameter Benign moles usually have a smaller diameter than malignant ones. Melanomas usually are larger in diameter, larger than the eraser on your pencil tip (¼ inch or 6mm), but they may sometimes be smaller when first detected. E = Evoling. Be on the alert when a mole starts to evolve or change in any way. When a mole is evolving, see a doctor. Any change in size, shape, color, elevation, or another trait, or any new symptom such as bleeding, itching or crusting points to danger. So remember your sunscreen and take care of your skin. 4 St Peter s Lutheran Church Father s Day Breakfast Buffet St Stephen Cemetery Memorial Service WHEN: Sunday June 19th from 7-10:30a.m. HERE: Held at the Toms Brook Fire Department Adults - $10.00 Children under 10 -$6.00 Will be held on Sunday, June 19 th at 3 pm at St Stephen Lutheran Church. Pastor Deanna will lead the service. All proceeds will benefit the Toms Brook Cemetery Fund for more info contact Steve and Judy Taylor Massanutten Military Academy s track is the place to be on Friday, June 3! Relay events will begin at 7:00 with the Survivor s Lap. Everyone will cheer on friends and family members as they celebrate their victory over cancer, or honor them as they courageously continue their fight. A reception for them will follow the survivor s lap. The second lap will be for caregivers, and following that the team members will begin their vigil of laps that will continue through the night. Individual team sites will offer items for sale or activities to keep us awake and enthusiastic until morning. Local talent will provide entertainment. Please come support cancer survivors, honor those still fighting, and remember with love those who have passed.

5 THE PANGLES & TUCKERS VIKING RIVER CRUISE Brenda & Delbert Pangle, Deryl & Margaret Tucker took a river cruise to Amsterdam and Belgium. We left on Friday April 15 at 6 p.m. We arrived in Amsterdam Sat. morning at 7:30 a.m. Once we left the airport we arrived at the ship. The ship holds up to 190 passengers and 50 crew members. On Sunday we did a guided canal tour of the canals of Amsterdam. We were told that some of the Netherlands is below sea level. It was explained how they moved the water around as needed. There were a lot of houseboats on the canals which were homes for some of the inhabitants. On Monday afternoon we toured a tulip farm. It was cold and very windy. The tulips were in bloom and were quite lovely. At the farm they were harvesting the tulips. They would cut the tulips from the bulbs to send the cut flowers to an auction house. Then the bulbs are sold at distribution centers. The baby bulb is kept to be replanted for the next year. On Tuesday, we went to Arnhem to visit the Paleis Het Loo which is a Dutch Royal Family residence that was built in No one lives there now. Wednesday we toured Kinderdijk Windmills. Thursday we toured Antwerp, Belgium. We visited the Cathedral of Our Lady. This was very large. They would bury the wealthy in the cathedral floor with a covering that was unsealed. After time the area would begin to stink, thus the saying Stinking Rich became famous. We also visited the chocolate houses. Friday we visited Ghent and Bruges. Saturday we visited Brunisse Walcheren & Delta Works. Sunday we visted the Keukenhof Flower Garden. It sits on 80 acres and has 7 million flower bulbs. On Monday, we headed home. Our evening meals started at 7 p.m. but did not finish until about 9 p.m. Since the ship was small we were able to meet lots of the people on the ship. The tables set 6. We met 2 ladies from New York who sat with us most of the time. We met a couple from Arizona who had planned to tour Europe by car for 4 months after the cruise. We had a couple from Texas one meal. We sat at the same table all week except for one evening. The waiter apologized that we were not able to eat at the table because someone else got the table. The food was good. They had entertainment in the lounge each evening. Deryl stated that he would go again on another river cruise. We all enjoyed the trip.
