Let s Celebrate Dynamic Community! WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS MORNING SESSION (10:15 a.m. 11:45 a.m.) A. Between Dialogue and Devastation: The Emerging Challenge (Morning and Afternoon) Kenneth J. Gergen, Ph.D., is a founding member, President of the Taos Institute and Chair of the Board, and the Mustin Professor of Psychology at Swarthmore College. The world today is one in which communication technologies enable people to remain in continuous contact. When communication among a group of people is constantly sustained, conceptions of the real and the good become solidified. Thus, we confront a perilous world condition in which there are multiple and competing visions of what is true and morally essential. Within each group, those standing outside can be seen as failing to understand and failing to live moral lives. The "other" becomes alien, possibly feared or despised. In the worst case, the attempt is to eliminate "the other." The major challenge, then, is to locate means of breaking the barriers between groups, and developing means of shifting from degenerative to generative relationships. This workshop will explore dialogic means of achieving these ends. B. From Individual Identity towards Coordinating a Life Story with Youth Rev. Dr. Brandon K. McKoy is a youth pastor at New Hope Baptist Church in Gastonia, North Carolina, and an adjunct instructor at Gardner-Webb University in the Department of Religious Studies and Philosophy. We will explore the limitations of our current notions of identity formation as something intrinsic and essential within the person. To locate identity, uniqueness, and spirituality as internal manifestations will not strengthen the future of youth or youth ministry. Dr. McKoy
will illustrate how reframing identity formation as a life story, formed within the coordination of relationships, offers a broader picture of youth and their relational narrative development. Ministering with a relational focus on identity will change our youth ministry practices, and youth will gain what they need most: to know they are connected, to feel they belong, to see their life matters, and to love in God s relational reign. C. Jesus and Social Construction: Exploring Jesus Teachings on Relational Being Dr. Frederic B. Burnham, Director Emeritus, Trinity Institute, retired Episcopal Priest Social Construction is a theory of human nature that rejects the reigning paradigm of individualism, that has governed Western thought for 300 years, and replaces it with a theory that sees relationships as the driving force in the development of human beings. In Ken Gergen s ground breaking work, Relational Being, he says, My attempt is to generate an account of human action that can replace the presumption of bounded selves with a vision of relationship. I do not mean relationships between otherwise separate selves, but rather, a process of coordination that precedes the very concept of the self. My hope is to demonstrate that virtually all intelligible action is born, sustained and/or extinguished within the ongoing process of relationship. I find this evocative theory to be profoundly satisfying because it closely resembles what Jesus had to say on the subject. In this workshop, we will explore Jesus teachings on Relational Being. D. How Travelers Can Keep Partnership Alive and Growing - In Their Lives and the Life of Their Congregation Guatemala Partnership Task Force This workshop is designed for: 1. Anyone who has gone on a mission trip (to Guatemala, Malawi, Mexico or wherever), has been moved by the experience and returned home to wonder, now what? How do I share what has happened to me? How do I let this experience form my faith? 2. Mission/Witness Committee members. The mission team has returned! How can team members share their experience with our congregation? How can their experience enable our congregation to grow in their understanding of and involvement in mission?
3. Pastors and educators who are enthusiastic about member s participation in a mission trip, but are not sure how to integrate their experiences into the life of their congregation. E. Kerygma Dick Ray In our Kerygma workshop, we will discuss the wide spread desire of many church members to become more familiar with the contents of the Bible and to become more confident in discussing its major ideas. We will recognize that people are sometimes hesitant, however, to participate in a Bible study class. With the Kerygma approach, both leaders and participants learn together. We begin with the basic text of the Scripture itself and learn how to read it and to discuss it together. While there are two levels for year long studies that provide solid foundations for understanding the important themes in the Bible, there are also shorter studies which last several weeks and cover one or two of the familiar books of the Bible. We will also have an opportunity in this workshop to share our own congregations experiences with Bible study and to learn from one another. In doing so, we will have an opportunity to consider the difference between the approach of Kerygma and that of other Bible study programs. We will conclude in discussing the first steps for a church to take as it explores the opportunities that Kerygma could give to it. F. Lifetree Café: What Is It and How Can I Get It To My Church Ann and Frank Aichinger, Co-Pastors at New Vision Church, Conover, NC Have you wondered what Lifetree Café is all about that New Vision Church in Conover talks about? Well, now is your chance to experience a Lifetree Café for yourself and consider bringing it to your church and community. Lifetree Café is a 60-minute conversation where people gather for conversation about life and faith in a casual coffeehouse-type setting. Every week is a different episode that is DVD driven with conversations in small groups and in the larger group. It is a great way
to help people think theologically about their everyday life, and to talk in a safe environment about all kinds of things. To help you understand Lifetree we will go through the episode: Fate, luck, and divine intervention, which features a showing of Crossword, an award-winning short film. The story follows a lonely Irish woman who finds solace in the daily crossword puzzle. But the crossword clues seem to link mysteriously to her own life circumstances. Then we will answer questions about how Lifetree Café can be a part of the ministry at your church. G. When Bullying Comes To Church (For Youth) Kent Patton, Black Mountain Presbyterian Church Have you ever experienced being bullied at church? Or watched that happen? We will explore types of bullying, effects of bullying, cyberbullying among young teens and how to react and reach out in a Christian response. We will use a variety of games and role playing during this class to explore bullying. H. Just Playin' Games!!!! Dave Cohn, Director at Camp Grier Play it indoors, play it outdoors, play it with big groups, play it with small groups, play it quietly and play it loudly---this class has it all! These are intergenerational games for everyone! Come join us as we introduce you to a variety of games that require very few or no props. These are fun active games for your groups to learn community building. This will be a hands-on class and we will look at resources available for active participation in a group setting. Come ready to play and learn! I. Enhance Worship Rev. Dr. James Aydelotte, Retired Pastor, Moderator of Administrative Board of PWNC Enliven your church s services of worship by a participatory review of the Directory for Worship in the PCUSA Constitution. Anyone on a congregation s Worship (and Music) Committee should attend. J. Men in the Mirror, Constructing and Applying a Christcentered Masculinity to Personal CANCELLED Relationships Rev. Dr. Kevin Frederick, Pastor, Waldensian Presbyterian Church
Boys and men are taught a variety of contradictory messages about their masculinity and relationship skills that contribute to a life of mistakes and frustrations in our interpersonal and professional relationships. Since Jesus Christ is God in human form, and we are called to learn from him, this course is designed to examine the context and nature of his relationships with others and learn to apply them to our lives. The workshop provides an overview of the course content and offers the resources and tools for men to learn from these insights in a safe setting with other men. K. How the IRS Can Be Your Church s (and Your Pastor s) Friend Ken Humphreys, CLP at Conley Memorial and a member of the Budget and Finance Committee The workshop will cover various financial/accounting topics of interest to churches and will concentrate on how to structure pastor terms of call for maximum tax benefit to both the church and the pastor, how to claim the tax rebate now available for churches for a portion of staff medical insurance premiums, reporting requirements to the IRS, claiming a refund for state sales taxes. Churches can save thousands of dollars each year by keeping proper records and by filing promptly for the state and federal tax rebates. This workshop will explain the benefits and how the IRS (and the NC Dept. of Revenue) can be your church's friend. Also, other members of the Budget and Finance Committee, (Jay Crane, Charles Sellers and Debbie MacIntosh) will be assisting with a Q & A. L. Biblical Clues for a World on the Edge Rev. D. Cameron Murchison, Jr. In the light of Calvin s emphasis on creation as the theater of God s glory, this workshop will examine selected Old and New Testament texts dealing with God s (and our) relationship to the whole creation, especially considering the themes of humanity s centered and decentered place in creation, creation s interconnectedness in failure and flourishing, God s covenant with all creation, creation s calling to praise God, and the reconciliation of all things. Implications for earth care will be explored for each theme. M. How About Serving Your Church As An Officer? Ms. Barbara Ross, Presbytery Associate, Elder at Crossnore Presbyterian Church and member of the Committee on Ministry
Thinking about becoming an elder? Would you like to know more about the duties and responsibilities of an elder? Come and explore the Book of Order and learn about becoming an officer in our church! N. Seven Questions Russ Reighley, CLP at Sweetwater Presbyterian Church and chair of the Small Church Committee; and members of the Small Church Committee Is your small church stuck in 20th century, thinking, wondering how to move on? Join us in a session to examine your own congregation using seven questions, and begin to develop a realistic plan for a brighter future. O. Do Not Let Your Hands Grow Weak: An Advent Workshop Rev. Dr. Richard Boyce, Associate Professor of Preaching and Pastoral Leadership, Union Presbyterian Seminary Charlotte Campus Presbyterians are easily discouraged these days. Numbers and money are down; congregations are splintered; we no longer have the respect we used to. Join a group of fellow believers who will listen to the Advent texts from this perspective. As Zephaniah says: "The king of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst; you shall fear disaster no more." Can we get an "Amen"? AFTERNOON SESSION (1:00 p.m. 2:30 p.m.) P. Between Dialogue and Devastation: The Emerging Challenge (Morning and Afternoon) Kenneth J. Gergen, Ph.D., President of the Taos Institute and Chair of the Board, and the Mustin Professor of Psychology at Swarthmore College. The world today is one in which communication technologies enable people to remain in continuous contact. In this workshop we will explore Jesus teachings on Relational Being. S. Drumming the Psalms with Children and Youth Nathan and Shari Crabtree, Music Directors at Northminster Presbyterian Church, Hickory, NC. (Nathan and Shari are both Level II Orff certified and have a particular interest in global music and world drumming.) Help your children and youth groups to present various Psalms in worship! Chant rhythmic paraphrases of the scripture and then transfer them to drums and other "World Music Percussion" instruments. The session will also have tips about adapting for groups without drums. T. Homegrown Food: From Finish to Start Hunger Committee Members of Presbytery of WNC - Bill Heck (composting), Wanda Woodby (preserving), and Katie Adams (growing). This workshop will deal with composting, preserving food, and growing food. The workshop is for the backyard or community gardener who would like to learn and share information regarding: a) How to turn waste materials into rich compost; b) How to preserve their harvest through freezing and drying; c) How to grow herbs and other vegetables, Participants will leave this workshop with an herb planter they have created. U. Make it Work: Technology is Your Friend Heather Scott, Production Associate at Montreat Conference Center So often, you fight these new isolating technologies in youth ministry. Come and explore ways to embrace social media and communication websites to create a new and exciting sense of community. This will include types of social media, communication ideas and administration tools. Bring your laptops and other gadgets and let s explore together. V. Youth Ministry for the Small Church Rev. Kent Smith, Retired Pastor and Stated Pastor at West Asheville Presbyterian Church A church with only a few youth can still have a worthwhile youth ministry! It is just different from the traditional image of a "youth
group." In fact, a small youth group has some opportunities and advantages that a large group lacks. This session will explore the possibilities and pitfalls of a small church youth ministry and will include time for the participants to share their ideas and practices. The group leader is the Rev. Kent Smith, who is retired after 40 years of youth ministry, but is now serving part-time at West Asheville Presbyterian Church. W. When Bullying Comes To Church (For Adults) Kent Patton, Black Mountain Presbyterian Church We will explore types of bullying, effects of bullying, and how to minister to all involved. We will explore what the effects and prevalence of cyber-bullying are among young teens. Adults in any role in the church are encouraged to join this class and learn more about how to make your church feel safe and welcoming to all. Take home resources will be available. X. Let s Talk About Christian Education! Mary Lou Nash, Ginny Soll, and Betty Davenport Christian Educators in Presbytery of WNC What are the ways people learn? How do I choose good curriculum? Can we work with different ages together? What are some creative ways to do Christian Education? Come and meet your Presbytery s POINT (Presbyterians Organized In Nurture and Teaching) leaders and discuss questions you may have about your congregation s educational ministry! Y. Peace in the Holy Land? Rev. Dr. James Aydelotte, Retired Pastor, Moderator of Administrative Board of PWNC A brief historical survey of events in the Middle East up to 1967, an analysis of the situation in the "West Bank" since, and a discussion of possible solutions towards a just peace for all. Z. General Assembly Report and Polity Update Bert Sigmon, Stated Clerk of PWNC Every two years, Presbyterians from around the country gather at the General Assembly. It's sort of like an eight-day session meeting on steroids! Just like a governmental legislative session, representatives
(we call them "General Assembly Commissioners" or "GA Commissioners" for short) from all 173 presbyteries, are randomly appointed to serve on committees, to study proposed legislation (known as "bills and overtures"), to recommend positions on those bills and overtures, and to vote on those measures. Much of what is accomplished becomes part of our polity. It is not unusual for the General Assembly to process 300 or more items during the meeting. Our time together at "Let's Celebrate" will be spent learning about the decisions coming from the General Assembly. Frequently, issues dealt with by the GA Commissioners are submitted to the presbyteries for a denomination-wide vote. We will study those items, if any are submitted, and will talk about how General Assembly actions reshape elements of our polity. AA. Are the Children in our Congregation Safe from Abuse? Carol Steele, Director for the Center for Youth & Young Adult Ministry, Montreat Conference Center, and Michael Poulos, Associate Pastor, First Presbyterian Church, Asheville We hear stories every day of children who are mistreated or sexually abused in schools, children s programs, and sadly, even the church. All our churches need to have more discussion about child safety and begin to adopt policies and procedures that keep our children safe. In this workshop, members of the Sexual Misconduct Prevention Team will be present to introduce the issues of child safety and recommend safety procedures. Jim Poling and others.

Making Gifts of the Heart Kits Gift of the Heart kits are an excellent hands on project for youth groups and other groups that want a tangible way to be involved. School Kits and Hygiene Kits are often the most in demand. This year at Let s Celebrate, the children participating in our child care program will have an opportunity to learn about participating in God s work in the world through prayer and action. Part of their participation will include packing hygiene kits for PDA (Presbyterian Disaster Assistance). Making the kits will give the children a sense of empowerment and confidence in their abilities to share in God s work. You can be a part of this mission project too! By donating hygiene supplies to be packed, you will be helping a child help others. Let s show these children God s love in action! Let s make sure they have plenty of supplies to pack to be sent to PDA s Ferncliff Disaster Assistance Center in Little Rock, Arkansas.
