1 Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time 14 October 2012 Saint Luke Church, Whitestone, New York From the Desk of Msgr. Tosi--- There is one Lord, one faith, one Baptism. There is one God who is Father of all. With these words, sung as a response to the renewal of Baptismal Promises, the parish of Saint Luke joined with fellow Catholics in our diocese and throughout the world opens the Year of Faith proclaimed by Pope Benedict XVI to run from October 2012 to November This most ancient Profession of Faith calls to mind the day of baptism when we receive the gift of faith. As a tiny seed the love of God made us His sons and daughters; united us to the Death and Resurrection of His Son Christ the Lord and made us members of Christ s Body the Church. Baptism is the door to our salvation in Christ. And yet for the vast majority of Catholics Baptism is something we learn about through pictures and stories told by parents, godparents and relatives. We have no lived memory of our Baptism and that great event in the mystery of salvation in Christ. God s love is active in our lives even before we know there is a God. What a Gift! God s gift of his love does not depend on us; God s love is given freely by our heavenly Father whose only desire is that we return His love by loving Him and our neighbor. And so our lives as Christians is a constant reflection upon the event of our Baptism - caring for the seed of faith. Unfortunately, we often take this gift for granted. And thus the Year of Faith. The Holy Father calls us to claim our Baptism and to grow in faith each day of our lives as we look forward to its fullness in Heaven. Let us then make this year on big - Thank you - for the love of God who has bestowed on us the Gift of Faith - a thank you not of words, but of formation and practice of the faith; of sharing the faith and never taking so great a gift for granted. Some other items: 1. The success of our Faith Film Series was a great way to begin the Year of Faith. Over one hundred people attended each of the three movies and enjoyed the presentation by Father Robert Lauder. A thank you to all involved in presenting the Film Series especially to Father Lauder and Father Vincent for coming up with the idea. Who knows - maybe a follow up in the spring. 2. Thank you for your kind reception of my remarks on the Capital Campaign at all the Masses last weekend. In addition to the new pledges made, five parishioners increased their pledge. Don t forget to join us in celebrating the feast of Saint Luke and the success of the campaign on Thursday, October 18th at 7:30pm Mass to be celebrated by Bishop Chappetto and concelebrated by the priests of the parish. 3. Welcome to Father David Champoli who will be helping us out at weekday Masses. Recently ordained, Father Champoli is completing work on a Doctorate in Theology from Rome while living at the House of Discernment in Brooklyn. He has graciously offered to assist us for weekday Mass. We are so pleased to welcome Father to our parish. Trivia fact: While a priest at Resurrection Ascension Parish, Rego Park, I gave then Danny Champoli his First Holy Communion! 4. Return to Saint Francis Hospital. After experiencing difficulty in breathing the beginning of last week, I returned to Saint Francis Hospital on Wednesday, October 9th for an angiogram. As a result, two new stents were implanted bringing the total of stents to lucky 13! But whose counting. I ve been resting for a few days and hopefully will return to full duties soon. 2 CELEBRATE THE YEAR OF FAITH AT SAINT LUKE Parish Opening --- Saint Luke Parish will join the other parishes of the Diocese in opening the Year of Faith at all the Masses on the weekend of October 13 and Feast of Saint Luke ---Theme: To live listening to God Pope Benedict XVI, 2 Sept at the Angelus in Castel Gandolfo The Year of Faith will continue with a Triduum of Prayer in preparation for the feast of Saint Luke on Thursday, October 18th. Join the celebration of our parish patron on: Monday, October 15th - Evening Prayer with Guest Preacher Tuesday, October 16th - Through Word and Creed, in words and tunes, we remember the story of our faith and give thanks to God in rhyme and note. Celebrate a Hymn Festival based on the Nicene Creed as we sing hymns and songs, listen to scripture and pray. Wednesday, October 17th - Evening Prayer with Guest Preacher Thursday, October 18th - Feast Day Mass at 7:30pm Main Celebrant: Most Rev. Raymond F. Chappetto, Auxiliary Bishop of Brooklyn 3. Day of Eucharistic Adoration - Friday, December 7 - First Friday Here at Saint Luke and in all the parishes of the Diocese. The day will begin with the 8:30am Mass followed by Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament until 5:00pm when it will end with first Vespers of the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. 4. The Credo Sermon Series As part of the celebration of the Year of Faith at Saint Luke s, we will dedicate one Sunday a month to a homily at each Mass which will explore the individual declarations of faith found in our Creed. The series will run from November 2012 through October 2013 (July and August 2013 excluded). 5. The Bible and The Creed This four week course will examine the biblical foundations of the statements of faith which we proclaim each Sunday in the Creed, exploring the theological and philosophical concepts of our common declaration of belief. Proposed dates: Tuesday, November 13 - School Auditorium Tuesday, November 20 - School Cafeteria Tuesday, November 27 - School Auditorium Tuesday, December 4 - School Auditorium 6. A Story of Faith in Stained Glass - Afternoon of Prayer - Sunday, May 5, 2pm-5pm Msgr. Tosi will lead a reflection on the story of faith found in the beautiful stained glass windows of Saint Luke Church. Page 2

Auxiliary Bishop of Brooklyn Join us for this special feast day Mass in honor of our patron saint to be celebrated by newly ordained Bishop Chappetto in his first visit to the parish of Saint Luke. 4 THE BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS --- Thursday, October 4th was the feast of St. Francis of Assisi. In observance of the feast, Msgr. Tosi blessed the animals in front of the statue of St. Francis across from the church. As you can see in the photos below there were many dogs, some cats and kittens, a rabbit and even a gerbil! 5 MISSION STATEMENT As a community of believers in Jesus Christ and in Communion with the universal church, we strive to follow the Lord s command to love God and one another. Rooted in word and sacrament, we grow together as a Eucharistic community inviting all to the Good News of Jesus. PRE-BAPTISM PROGRAM --- When preparing for the Baptism of your child, parents must attend a Pre-Baptism Class for their first and second child only. Godparents are welcome to attend. The class is held once a month usually on the third Monday night of the month in the rectory at 7:30pm. The Baptismal Liturgy is usually celebrated on the second and fourth Sunday of the month at 3pm. No Baptism can take place until the church receives a copy of the child s Birth Certificate as required by the diocese. If you are planning a Baptism, please note the following dates: Baptism Sunday Baptism Class October 28 October 15 November 11 & 25 November 19 December 2 & 9 December 17 For more information, please call the rectory at **************************************************************************** St. Luke Youth Group Baby Clothing Drive If your little one has outgrown all those cute little outfits, or you d just like to help a baby or child in need this fall the St. Luke Youth Group has a way you can do it! We have two different charities that the clothing will be donated to (depending on if new or gently used). New clothing will be given to the New York Foundling Hospital; and any gently used will be going to the Bridge to Life Group. Collection times are on Tuesday s from 8AM till 11:30 AM at the security desk in the school on October 16th; October 23; and October 30. We will also be conducting a coat drive in November but if you have to get that coat out of your house today!!! You can drop it off during the Baby Clothing drive days and hours. We and the babies thank you for your help and generosity! ********************************* Our first youth group meeting on Saturday, October 6th was a hit! Around 65 young people showed up for the evening. The evening began with Father Vincent speaking to the young people about the upcoming events for the year. The group was very excited. A boys versus girls trivia game competition ended in a tie. After the game they took a break for some pizza, chips and cookies. The youth committee purchased a digital Karaoke machine and the boys and girls lined up to sing along with their favorite songs. All and all it was a great evening! MASS BOOK 2013 The Mass book for 2013 will open on Wednesday, October 24th. Announced Masses will be available from 9:00am until 4:00pm in the rectory basement. Please enter on Clintonville Street. There is a limit of 5 Masses per family. The offering for each Mass is $15 which may be paid for by check or cash. In order to make things run more smoothly, please remember to bring the exact amount for the number of Masses you wish to arrange. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated. 11 C A M P A I G N O R The Campaign for Saint Luke Serving the Present; Building the Future has now raised in pledges: N Campaign Total $3,268,006 E Number of Families 861 Average Gift 3,796 R School Families Gift $332,610 Number of Families 100 Alumni Gift $6,575 Number of Families 10 Work Update: Contractor Selected --- Contract awarded for Exterior Work: After the meeting of Tuesday, September 25, Msgr. Tosi selected the company of PPM Restoration for the exterior work on the church. One of five bidders, PPM has a great deal of experience in exterior church restoration and has completed work on a number of projects in our diocese. Their bid of approximately $1,275,658 was accepted and hopefully work will begin sometime in October. The entire project will be supervised by Acheson Doyle Partners Architects in collaboration with the Diocese and Msgr. Tosi. Time Line: In recent discussions with all the parties involved in this major restoration of the parish church, it has become clear that the original projected time line for the project is no longer realistic. A completion date of Easter (March 31, 2013) can not be guaranteed. This change will impact the parish in many ways. For example, we have already informed the couples who scheduled weddings here after Easter 2013 that the church will no longer be available. Of course, we will help them secure other local churches and assist them in preparing and celebrating their wedding. We regret any upsetment this decision may have caused. Yet we thought it better to make such a decision now rather than later. A decision, therefore, has been made to close the church from January to July Hopefully the work will be done sooner. However, it seems prudent to plan for more time to avoid last minute confusion and upsetment. We will use the bulletin to keep the parish informed of the progress of the work and of the changes the work necessitates. During the next few months and during the work itself we will need to be patient and work together in support of this much needed restoration. I am sure there will be some upsetment and difficult times. Yet I am confident that the end result will be well worth the effort. Like a woman in childbirth - who gives birth in pain but rejoices in the gift of new life. So also with our renovation! Campaign Update: Celebrate Success - With God s help we will gather to give thanks for the success of the Campaign at the feast Mass on Thursday, October 18th at 7:30pm. 13 ST. LUKE SCHOOL WHERE FAITH AND KNOWLEDGE MEET A YEAR OF FAITH, A LIFE OF FAITH Miss Gizzi s fourth grade religion classes opened the school year discussing what their faith means to them. Many students thought faith only meant religion, but in fact, they learned how many things make up our faith. Miss Gizzi and her religion classes discussed that starting on October 11 th, the Catholic church will be focusing on a Year of Faith. In celebration of this renewing of faith, students made puzzle-like crosses. In each puzzle piece, students wrote words that symbolized what faith means to them. They were excited to see how many different pieces of Catholicism make up their faith. Page 13

14 BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT On the evening of Friday, September 28 th, Saint Luke School held its 2 nd Annual Back to School Night. In spite of the rain, everyone had an absolutely wonderful time. Hamburgers and hot dogs sizzled on the grills under the car port, students of all ages played games on the Great Lawn and others danced to the music in the School Hall! This event is the perfect way to start off a new school year. New families had the opportunity to meet members of the school community and old friends relaxed and enjoyed each other s company. Many of our dedicated teachers were on hand to help make this evening a success. And that is just what this evening was A SUCCESS! Everyone had fun. Back to School Night is yet another example of how caring and welcoming our school is! Be sure to save the date for September 2013!! Page 14

They are happy to announce expanded hours made possible by volunteers who have graciously donated their time. The food pantry will still be open every Friday from 10-11am and now it will also be open from 5-6pm every Monday evening. The food pantry relies on donations of nonperishable items given out of generosity.
