Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time 6 October 2013 Saint Luke Church, Whitestone, New York From the Desk of Msgr. Tosi -- Pauper Sum Ego Nihil Habeo Cor Meum Dado Forty years ago these words were inscribed on the base of my chalice, a gift given by my parents. Translated from Latin, these words mean: I am poor; I have nothing; I give my heart. As I celebrate forty years of priesthood this weekend, I have tried to make those words the foundation of my priestly ministry in the various assignments I have been given. Every priest is called to share the love of Christ with those he is called upon to serve. To be another Christ is not easy - for we are poor, lacking so many needed gifts; we are sinners. Yet Jesus calls the weak and sinful to priesthood and fills up what is lacking so that we can never claim it is our ministry. Rather, the ministry of every priest is to be Christ s ministry and Christ acting in us, through us and with us. What a great privilege to be the instrument of the One who came to serve and not to be served - who gave His life so that all might be saved. Likewise, I am grateful to so many who have shared their faith, hope and love with me during these forty years. Often in their weakness they have enriched me with great witness to the Gospel. Together we have supported each other in our personal journey of faith lived in the community of faith - the church. For a priest this takes place in so many ways - especially in the Sacraments and in particular the Eucharist. It is the Eucharist that is the heart and center of the priesthood. Please pray for me that I may be a good and faithful priest. I pray for all of you every day. May our Blessed Mother Mary continue to watch over the church and in a special way those called to priesthood. God bless. Let us pray for one another, Page 1

Msgr. Tosi is pleased to announce that in a recent letter to him Bishop DiMarzio has renewed his appointment as Pastor of the Parish of Saint Luke. On Sunday, October 6 at the 1:00pm Mass celebrating his 40th Anniversary of Priesthood Ordination, Bishop Raymond Chappetto, D.D., V.G. will install Msgr. Tosi as pastor in a brief ceremony. Msgr. Tosi is grateful for the decision of the Bishop which is a great gift on his anniversary. Msgr. Tosi asks your prayers as he continues his priestly ministry among us. The following is a copy of Bishop DiMarzio s letter to Msgr. Tosi which was received at the rectory on October 1, Page 2

CELEBRATE THE REDEDICATION OF OUR CHURCH In 1898 the Church of Saint Luke was built in Whitestone, New York to provide for the spiritual needs of a small yet vibrant Catholic population. The church was and is a noble building dedicated to the glory of God and the service of God s holy people. We are blessed to have inherited so beautiful a building; we have accepted the sacrifice of its preservation. And so it s time to Rejoice. Please come and join in a series of events planned to mark this historic event. OTHER DEDICATION EVENTS -- MASS OF REDEDICATION with Bishop Chappetto, D.D., V.G. The class is held once a month usually on the third Monday night of the month at 7:30pm. The Baptismal Liturgy is usually celebrated on the second and fourth Sunday of the month at 3pm. No Baptism can take place until the church receives a copy of the child s Birth Certificate as required by the diocese. 6 SUNDAY COLLECTION September 28 & 29 $10,932 Envelopes Mailed 1,959 Amount Needed $13,425 Envelopes Received ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL This year s Annual Catholic Appeal comes to a close at the end of December Allow me to once again express thanks and gratitude to all those who have supported the Annual Catholic Appeal As of September 30th a total of $85,036 has been pledged by 304 donors with $76,925 already received. I am especially grateful since so many parishioners have been so faithful in fulfilling their pledge to the Campaign for Saint Luke. And yet, we have still not reached our parish goal set by the Bishop which is $100,508. If the goal is not reached by the end of the Appeal, I will have to take what is owed from Campaign funds. I would like to avoid that action. In order to help those who may not as of yet made a gift to the Annual Catholic Appeal, we will have an In-Pew Solicitation at all Masses on the weekend of November 2 & 3rd. This will provide an easy way to join other parishioners in supporting this annual appeal so important for the fiscal viability of both diocese and parish. Remember, everything over goal comes back to the parish! So, thank you to those who made a gift and for those who have not - please consider coming prepared to make a gift on November 2 & 3. Renewing Our Faith Through Acts of Charity Msgr. Tosi VOCATION CORNER --- God did not give us a spirit of cowardice. Will you let the Holy Spirit lead you beyond your fearful hesitation to follow Christ as a priest, deacon or in the consecrated life? Contact the Vocation Office at (718) or vocations@diobrook.org. 13 ST. LUKE SCHOOL WHERE FAITH AND KNOWLEDGE MEET Celebrating 103 Years of Excellence in Catholic Education Page 13 By: Ericka Conlon Friday, September 27 th, Monsignor Tosi, Mrs. Reiter, the faculty and staff of Saint Luke School welcomed the students and families back to school. This year marks our 3rd Annual Back to School Night and most certainly the best yet. The entire St. Luke School community enjoyed an evening of good food, tasty treats, and most importantly, great company. Parents had the opportunity to relax and socialize, while the children played in the playground or on the Great Lawn. The DJ equipment turned the playground into a brightly lit oasis. Children and adults alike danced to an array of songs. The feeling of community was alive and strong! This event has become a favorite not just for the students of our school, but also for the alumni. Recent graduates always find their way home to this event. As an 8 th grade teacher, this evening gives me the opportunity to see and catch up with many of my former students. I am always thrilled to see how mature they have become and proud to hear of their many accomplishments. No matter what high school they attend or the number of years since they have graduated, the sentiment is always the same There is no place like home. Saint Luke School a second home to many of us. We are truly blessed to be a part of such a loving and welcoming parish. Welcome back to school and may the Holy Spirit guide us through this new school year! God bless the families of St. Luke School.

CONGRATULATIONS To Mrs. Barbara Reiter who has been asked by the Superintendent of Catholic School Support Services to become a member of the Teacher and Principal Personnel Committee. The role of the committee is to develop policies and guidelines on a variety of issues related to Teacher and Principal personnel of the Brooklyn Diocese. We wish Mrs. Reiter well in this new responsibility. **************************************************************************************** WELCOME TO KINDERGARTEN The school year is underway! On Thursday, September 5 th Mrs. Molen welcomed her new Kindergarten class. The enthusiasm was contagious! Smiles filled our classroom as we all took some time to get acquainted. We read a story about going back to school and made First Day of Kindergarten headbands to celebrate the big day. This is the beginning of wonderful friendships and many memories will be made this year. We are all looking forward to a successful and fun year together. Page 14

SAYING GOOD-BYE TO SUMMER There were early morning tears when school began for Mrs. Pappalardo s Nursery 3 Class. By the end of the day, with the children settled in, there were happy faces among new friends! The month of September was filled with many activities and crafts. The class especially liked painting their leaves with watercolor and creating Modge Podge trees. We started the Letter Aa for apple, the color red and exploring circles. The little ones are enjoying the learning experience! Page 15
