1 PoP Calls John Durkin as Minister of Families and Children Prince of Peace is a Hub of spiritual transformation using God s Word, Sacrament, and Prayer, Equipping us to build networks of vibrant Christian communities, Extending to our homes, to our neighbors, and beyond, making disciples of Jesus. Vol. 18 No. 9 February 28, Prince of Peace called John Durkin to be the Minister of Families and Children during the Voter s Meeting last Sunday, February 22. John Durkin is currently the Director of Youth, Young Adult, and Family Life Ministries at St. John Lutheran Church in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Call Committee particularly noted John s strengths with building rapport and community among all age groups, his ability to implement the vision of the church, his genuine passion for the ministry, his flexibility and willingness to learn, and his ability to lead and work well in team ministry. John is married to Mary, and they have a daughter, Madison and a son, Mike. Please pray for John and his family as they deliberate their current calls and John s new call to Prince of Peace. Voter s Assembly Set for March 11 to Call Minister of Care and Outreach As promised during the February 22 Voter s Assembly, Prince of Peace will hold another Voter s Assembly in the sanctuary Wednesday, March 11 at 8:30 p.m., for the purpose of calling Stacey Crosson to a new position on staff as Minister of Care and Outreach (MCO). A Town meeting to discuss the MCO call will take place Sunday, March 8 at 9:30 a.m.. As MCO, Stacey would provide interim and referral counseling services for community members in need and leadership for the Stephen Ministries program; develop and execute Christian outreach activities that minister to and serve our community; coordinate adult ministry efforts, to include young adult and college aged ministries, women s and men s ministries, and missional communities; develop a network of volunteers to lead and manage various programs; and support the vision and goals of the Church and the members of the ministry team. 2 PoP Communicator Page 2 of 8 Vol. 18 No. 9 Continued from front page: Mid-Week Lenten Services Our mid-week Lenten services will be on Wednesdays at noon and 7:30 p.m. The noon service will include Holy Communion. The evening service will be services of Evening Prayer. Our theme this year is Singing With the Exiles based on passages from the Book of Isaiah. Weekly topics will include: March 4: Marked March 11: Breaking down the gates. March 18: Get out! March 25: One little word can fell him. Plan now on making these weekly mid-week services part of your Lenten discipline. See page 4 for children s Lenten services: His Family Time. Lenten Resources Available This 40-day season of Lent (not including Sundays) is a time when we remember the sacrifice that Jesus paid on our behalf. It is a time of prayer and personal devotion. To help you in your personal and family times of devotion, we are once again offering several complimentary devotional resources for you and your family. These complimentary resources may be found on the credenza in the narthex opposite the center door to the sanctuary. The previous Exploratory Team (led by Mike Macrina) identified the need for additional staff support in the areas of Family Life and pastoral care. Based on these expressed needs, Stacey s training and gifts as a counselor and DCE, and the very positive feedback about Stacey from members of Prince of Peace, the Call Committee (also led by Mike Macrina) recommended to the voters during the call service on Sunday to set Stacey Crosson aside for election as MCO at a later date. The date for that election has been set for March 11. The members of the Call Committee and Board of Servant Leaders remain open to comments about the call process. The Call Committee members are: Mike Macrina (chair), Elisa Ferguson, Erin Summers, Kirk Anderson, Karla Ver Bryck Block, Bob Landon, Brooke Carpenter, and Pastor Gnewuch. The members of the Board of Servant Leaders are listed in the Communicator every week. Prince of Peace will continue to identify the spiritual needs of members in the church and community and continue to evaluate how we can best staff our church to meet those needs, especially our ongoing need for ordained and lay pastoral care. A second Exploratory Team under the leadership of Julie Eichhorst has been formed for those twin purposes. The members of the Exploratory Team appreciate member feedback. They are Brian Harris, Greg Jose, Rob Winston, David Carpenter, Dayna Cooper, Brian Poe, Jerry Nepodal, Kate Bitely, Julie Eichhorst (chair) and Pastor Gnewuch.

3 PoP Communicator Page 3 of 8 Vol. 18 No. 9 to Charter This Sunday The Southeastern District will officially recognize Vine & Branches as a newly chartered church during their regular worship service at 10:30 a.m. this Sunday, March 1, We encourage our members to attend worship at Vine & Branches that morning as a show of support for our daughter church. President Denninger will preach and officiate the service. We are excited Vine & Branches has matured and become independent! We look forward to seeing her grow and birth new churches of her own in the years ahead. Vine & Branches is meeting at Liberty Elementary School, Riding Center Drive, South Riding, VA The school is located just a few blocks northeast of the intersection of Gum Spring Road (Rt 659) and Braddock Road (Rt 620). This is the second successful church plant Prince of Peace has supported this year. Two weeks ago, Nueva Vida officially chartered in Woodbridge as the first Hispanic bilingual church in the Southeastern District (see photos below). Rev. Pedro Lopez was installed as Nueva Vida s first pastor at the same service. Nueva Vida is meeting at Fred Lynn Middle School, 1650 Prince William Parkway. President Denninger officiated the service and Rev. Dr. Carlos Hernandez preached. Nueva Vida was planted by the Hispanic Mission Development Board, a covenant ministry supported by Grace in Woodbridge, St. John s in Franconia, Prince of Peace and the Southeastern District. 7 PoP Communicator Page 7 of 8 Vol. 18 No. 9 Faith Stories Sharing your faith story is an integral component in living out your faith. Your individual story makes up the greater story the story of God s redeeming his people for himself. Our stories encourage other believers while God also uses them to reach those not yet connected to him. You can share your stories by writing them in the Friendship Folder at any worship service, or post your story as a comment on the or by sending an to tiffany.sears@poplc.org. Crescent Project Update Nearly 100 people from 40 churches attended Leaning Into Christ in the Tough Places with author Kate McCord. Here are some comments from participants: "Life changing! Leaving today with hope, joy, enthusiasm looking for the Honorable Prophet Jesus Messiah (my LORD) to do amazing things through me, my treasure, my story! The day was AMAZING! I have been so encouraged in my own walk. I have been reenergized, motivated and equipped for my conversations with Afghan friends. This has been an outstanding, far-reaching experience. Thank you for bringing Kate to all of us. In Jesus, in her, we have truly been blessed. Beautiful! All should hear for not just sharing with Muslims but helpful in all relationships. Amen! Thank you Kate!" Three other book signings reached many, many more. As Kate read from In the Land of Blue Burqas, she invited an Afghan woman to dance while others stood in a circle, a very touching moment. Separately, co-founder of Lutheran Bible Translators, Rev. Dr. Eugene Bunkowske and his wife Bernice attended the National Prayer Breakfast. Our Savior's Way then hosted a seminar on Building a Third Culture. Also, many thanks to all who gave generously during the Thanksgiving and Christmas season to meet the challenge grant of $12,000. Bridges: Christians Connecting With Muslims seminar will be offered at Heritage Fellowship in Reston, VA, on Saturday, March 21, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cost of $20 will include workbook and lunch.
