5 A GUDE TO THE MORNNG SERVCE Thoughts on Baptism Baptism is a new covenant sign. That is, it points and confirms gracious saving promise God His people and its fulfillment in sus Christ. t is be administered believers and ir children, as can be seen from Genesis 17, Matw 28, Colossians 2, 1 Corinthians 7, and Acts 16. To elaborate, Christian baptism is (1) commanded by Christ in Matw 28 ( Go make disciples baptizing and teaching m ). (2) t is be applied believers as we see in Acts 8 ( Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning see from Scripture he preached sus him. As y went along road y came some water, and eunuch said, Look! Water! What prevents me from being baptized? And Philip said, f you believe with all your heart, you may. And he answered and said, believe that sus Christ is Son God. And he ordered chariot sp, and y both went down in water, Philip as well as eunuch, and he baptized him. ) (3) t is be administered believers and ir children, as can be seen from Genesis 17 ( will establish my covenant between me, and you, and your descendants ) which shows that normal order discipleship in church is baptism followed by teaching; Colossians 2 (n Christ you were also circumcised having been buried with Him in baptism ) which shows that New Testament water baptism replaces Old Testament circumcision as sign membership in church, 1 Corinthians 7 ( your children are now holy ) which confirms place children in new covenant community, church; and Acts 16 ( Lydia was listening, and Lord opened her heart respond things spoken by Paul. And she and her household [were] baptized ) which shows us pattern earliest church in covenant baptism. Baptism (and especially infant baptism or covenant baptism) beautifully points initiative God s love. He reached out us, when we could not reach out Him. t is thus a perfect picture sovereign, saving grace. Every time we baptize an infant we bear witness that salvation is from God, that we cannot do any good thing secure it, that we all enter Kingdom heaven refore as little children, who do not do, but are done for. (B.B. Warfield) We, course, also baptize adult believers (who have never before been baptized.) n this way, y are recognized as disciples sus Christ through means baptism and confession faith (see Acts 2:38, 8:3537; Romans 10:9), and so it is our great joy and privilege from time time, hear new Christians press ir trust in sus Christ, Son God, and Savior sinners, as He is fered in gospel, and see m receive mark membership in covenant community. The Larger Catechism says: The needful but much neglected duty improving our Baptism, is be performed by us all our life long, especially in time temptation, and when we are present at administration it ors; by serious and thankful consideration nature it, and ends for which Christ instituted it, privileges and benefits conferred and sealed reby, and our solemn vow made rein; by being humbled for our sinful defilement, our falling short, and walking contrary, grace baptism, and our engagements; by growing up assurance pardon sin, and all or blessings sealed us in that sacrament; by drawing strength from death and resurrection Christ, in whom we are baptized, for mortifying sin, and quickening grace; and by endeavoring live by faith, have our conversation in holiness and righteousness, as those that have rein given up ir names Christ; and walk in brorly love, as being baptized by same Spirit in one body.
